Choose a 4K television whose exact HDMI input accepts 4K at 120 Hz, then verify VRR and ALLM support for that model and regional version. That combination lets compatible PS5 Pro games use the console’s 60-fps or up-to-120-fps modes, ray tracing and PSSR-enhanced 4K output. A 120 Hz set is not required for every game, but it is the key upgrade if you want access to high-frame-rate modes. You do not automatically need a new HDMI cable: PlayStation recommends the cable supplied with the console.

The short answer: what TV does PS5 Pro need?

A PS5 Pro works with many 4K televisions, but a television’s “4K” label alone does not tell you whether it can accept the signals you may want. Before buying, confirm all of the following for the exact model and the particular HDMI port you will use:

  • 4K resolution. This is the natural target for PS5 Pro gaming.
  • 4K at 120 Hz input. This is needed for compatible games that offer 120-fps output. A panel advertised as 120 Hz is not enough unless its HDMI input accepts a 4K/120 signal.
  • VRR support. Variable refresh rate can synchronize the display to changing game frame rates, reducing tearing and uneven motion when both the game and TV support it.
  • ALLM or an equivalent automatic game-mode feature. Auto Low Latency Mode lets a compatible TV switch to its low-latency picture mode when gameplay starts.
  • HDR support and a suitable game mode. HDR quality varies greatly, so check the model’s implementation rather than assuming every HDR label means the same picture.

Check the manufacturer’s specification sheet and manual for your country’s exact model number. Features can differ between series, screen sizes and HDMI inputs. If you use a soundbar, AV receiver or HDMI switch, verify that the entire signal path also passes 4K/120, VRR and HDR; connecting the console directly to the television is the simplest way to avoid an unsupported device in the chain.

Does PS5 Pro really support 4K at 120 Hz?

Yes. PlayStation describes PS5 Pro as supporting compatible games at 60 frames per second or up to 120 frames per second, with ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K resolution using PSSR at the same time. The important qualification is “compatible games.” The console cannot force every title to render at 120 fps, and a game may offer separate quality, performance or enhanced modes.

  • Dolby Atmos Audio: Advanced spatial audio processing can be found in movies, TV shows, and video games

PlayStation’s general troubleshooting guidance also states that the PS5 console supports HDMI 2.1 specifications and 4K 120 Hz video output. The television must still accept that signal on the connected input, and the game must provide a mode that uses it. If either condition is missing, the console will use the best mode available instead.

What 120 Hz changes

A 120 Hz input allows the TV to display a new frame every 8.33 milliseconds when a game outputs 120 frames per second. It also gives 40-fps quality modes a clean 3:1 cadence on a 120 Hz display, although whether a particular game offers a 40-fps mode is a developer decision. A 60 Hz television can still play every PS5 Pro game, but it cannot show a true 120-fps output.

When 120 Hz is optional

If you mainly play turn-based games, slower adventure titles or games that remain locked to 30 or 60 fps, a good 4K/60 television may be sufficient. You will still benefit from 4K resolution, HDR and a low-latency game mode. Buying 120 Hz is a forward-looking choice for compatible current and future titles, not a requirement for the console to function.

Do you need HDMI 2.1?

For 4K at 120 Hz, an HDMI 2.1-capable input is the usual requirement because it provides the bandwidth and features used by that signal. Do not rely on a retailer’s generic “HDMI 2.1” badge, however. Confirm that the exact port supports 4K/120 Hz; some televisions have several HDMI sockets but only one or two support the full gaming feature set. A port can also support 4K/120 while another is limited to 4K/60.

Read the manual’s input table for entries such as “4K 120,” “4K 120 Hz,” “8K/4K 120,” “VRR” and “ALLM.” The TV may require a setting such as Enhanced format, Input Signal Plus, HDMI Deep Color or a manufacturer-specific equivalent before the high-bandwidth mode becomes available. Use the port designated for the desired feature rather than assuming every socket is identical.

VRR and ALLM: which features matter?

VRR

VRR changes the display refresh timing in real time to follow the game’s frame output. When frame rate fluctuates, VRR can make motion appear steadier and prevent visible tearing. It does not raise a game’s frame rate, improve resolution or turn a 30-fps game into a 120-fps game. Both the game and the connected television must support the relevant VRR implementation, and PlayStation notes that results vary by TV.

Look for explicit PS5/PS5 Pro VRR support in the television documentation and identify which HDMI inputs provide it. Some sets impose a narrower operating range, disable VRR in certain picture modes or require a firmware update. Those conditions belong in the model’s manual, not in a universal assumption about the brand.

ALLM and game mode

ALLM allows the console to signal the television to switch automatically to its low-latency game preset. Without ALLM, you can usually select Game Mode manually, but the TV may remain in a slower movie or standard picture mode when you change inputs. Manufacturers use different labels, including Auto Low Latency Mode, Auto Game Mode and Instant Game Response. Confirm both the feature and the name of the setting in the manual.

ALLM is a convenience feature, not a frame-rate requirement. A TV without it can still be suitable if its manual game mode has acceptable latency and you are willing to select it yourself.

How to compare 4K TVs for PS5 Pro

Use the following checklist for each candidate. Record the exact model code, screen size and region; two similarly named televisions may have different ports or firmware.

Do not confuse panel refresh with accepted input

Some product pages advertise a 120 Hz panel, motion-enhancement rate or “effective” refresh number without confirming a 4K/120 HDMI signal. For PS5 Pro, the input specification is the decisive item. If the manual only lists 4K/60, the TV cannot display a native 4K/120 console signal even if its panel marketing uses a higher number.

Image quality considerations

Resolution and gaming features do not determine overall picture quality. Compare model-specific information about HDR brightness, local dimming or per-pixel contrast, reflection handling, viewing angle and uniformity. Those characteristics vary by panel technology and size. There is no universal brightness or input-lag figure that can be assigned to every 4K/120 television, so use measurements from a reliable review of the exact model rather than a series name.

Size, price and room fit

Choose a size that fits your seating distance and furniture before optimizing specifications. Measure the stand width, wall space and cable clearance. Prices and availability change by country, size and promotion; check the manufacturer and local retailers at the time of purchase. A larger screen is not automatically better if you sit close enough to see scaling artifacts or cannot position it comfortably.

What Sony’s own series chart shows about model differences

Sony’s listed 2025 series illustrate why the exact model and input matter. In that chart, BRAVIA 5 (XR50) and BRAVIA 8 II (XR80M2) are marked as supporting 4K/120 Hz, VRR and ALLM. BRAVIA 3 (S30) and BRAVIA 2 II (S20M2) are not marked for 4K/120 Hz or VRR. This is an example of feature variation within one manufacturer, not a universal ranking or an endorsement of any series. Regional suffixes, screen sizes and later revisions can differ, so confirm the specification for the SKU sold in your market.

Do you need an 8K TV?

No. This buying guide targets 4K output, and 8K is not a prerequisite for PS5 Pro gaming. PlayStation lists 8K support for select games and describes separate display requirements, while its compatibility guidance lists system output up to 4K. An 8K set may accept some higher-resolution signals, but it generally costs more and does not make a 4K game render at 8K. Buy one only if you have a specific 8K use case and have confirmed the complete signal path; it is not needed to access 4K/120, VRR or ALLM.

How to connect and configure a PS5 Pro

After installing the TV, use this order so you can identify which component is limiting the signal.

  1. Update both devices. Install the latest available TV firmware and PS5 Pro system software before testing high-refresh features.
  2. Connect the console directly to the TV. Use the HDMI input identified in the manual as supporting 4K/120 and VRR. Bypass a receiver, soundbar or switch during initial setup.
  3. Start with the supplied HDMI cable. PlayStation recommends the cable included with the console. A replacement Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is relevant only if the supplied cable is unavailable, damaged or too short.
  4. Enable the TV’s enhanced input mode. If the manual calls for an Enhanced, 4K120, Deep Color or similar setting, apply it to the connected port. Turn on the TV’s Game Mode and enable its VRR or adaptive-sync option if required.
  5. Open the PS5 video settings. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The information screen reports what the connected HDMI device advertises, including resolution, VRR and HDR support.
  6. Review the output options. In the same area, inspect 120 Hz Output, VRR, ALLM, HDR and Video Transfer Rate. Leave compatible options on Automatic unless a game or display manual tells you to use another value.
  7. Test with a game that supports the feature. Select its performance, high-frame-rate or enhanced mode. A game that has no 120-fps mode will not produce one merely because the TV and console support 120 Hz.
  8. Add audio equipment afterward. Reconnect a receiver or soundbar and verify that it passes the same 4K/120, VRR and HDR formats. If it does not, connect the console to the TV and send audio back through the TV’s supported audio-return connection.

What the PS5 video menus tell you

The console automatically detects the connected display’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution. The Video Output information panel is more useful than a retailer’s generic specification because it reports the device actually connected to the console. Check that it lists 4K resolution, HDR and VRR where expected. The 120 Hz option is meaningful only when the TV and active HDMI path advertise support.

ALLM behavior depends on the television. When supported, leaving ALLM on Automatic lets the TV change to its low-latency mode during gameplay. If the TV does not support ALLM, select its Game Mode manually and confirm that the picture preset does not disable HDR or VRR.

Troubleshooting missing 4K/120 output

The console reports 4K/60 or a lower resolution

  • Recheck the TV manual and confirm that the selected HDMI port, not merely another port on the set, accepts 4K/120.
  • Enable the port’s enhanced or high-bandwidth signal setting.
  • Install current firmware on the TV and console.
  • Disconnect receivers, soundbars, capture devices and HDMI switches, then test a direct console-to-TV connection.
  • Reseat both ends of the supplied cable. If it is damaged or unsuitable, try a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
  • Return PS5 video options to Automatic and inspect the Video Output information screen again.

120 Hz appears but VRR does not

  • Confirm that VRR is enabled in the TV’s gaming settings and on the PS5 Video Output screen.
  • Check that the game supports VRR and that it is not using a mode that disables it.
  • Verify the active HDMI port and cable path; an intermediate device may pass 120 Hz but not VRR.
  • Update firmware and power-cycle the TV and console after changing signal settings.

HDR looks dim, washed out or incorrect

  • Check that HDR is set to Automatic on the console and that the TV switches to its HDR picture mode.
  • Run the PS5 HDR adjustment screens after the TV has entered HDR mode.
  • Use the TV’s game HDR preset and avoid disabling tone-mapping controls without understanding their effect.
  • Test another game or HDR video source to determine whether the behavior is title-specific.

The picture cuts out when 4K/120 is enabled

Intermittent black screens usually indicate a cable, port or signal-path problem. Test the shortest direct connection, use the TV’s documented 4K/120 port, update firmware and remove any switch or receiver. If the direct connection works, reintroduce other equipment one device at a time to identify the component that cannot pass the required format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do you need a new HDMI cable?

Usually not. PlayStation recommends using the HDMI cable included with the console, so a new purchase is not a mandatory part of choosing a TV. Buy a replacement only when the original is missing, damaged, too short or unable to maintain the signal. In that case, choose an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and connect it directly for testing. Cable packaging alone cannot compensate for a TV input or receiver that lacks 4K/120 support.

Common buying mistakes

Buying on the “4K” label alone

4K identifies resolution, not refresh rate, VRR, ALLM, HDR quality or input bandwidth. Read the port table for the precise model.

Assuming every HDMI socket is equivalent

Many sets provide only one or two 4K/120 inputs. Mark the correct socket before installing a wall mount, and leave enough access for the console cable.

Expecting every game to run at 120 fps

PS5 Pro’s up-to-120-fps capability applies to compatible games and modes. A 120 Hz television expands your options; it does not alter a game’s frame-rate targets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring audio hardware

A soundbar or receiver can become the limiting device. Confirm its supported formats or connect the console directly to the TV.

Choosing by brand family instead of model number

Feature availability can change between series, sizes and regions. Save the full SKU and consult the local manual before ordering.

A practical decision path

  1. Set your performance target. If you want compatible 120-fps modes or 40-fps quality modes, require 4K/120 input. If you only need 30/60-fps gaming, 4K/60 may be adequate.
  2. Filter for the correct port. Reject any model whose manual does not explicitly identify a 4K/120 HDMI input.
  3. Add VRR when frame-rate consistency matters. Confirm the supported range and port, not just a generic VRR logo.
  4. Add ALLM for convenience. Otherwise, make sure manual Game Mode is easy to select.
  5. Compare picture and room characteristics. Evaluate HDR behavior, contrast, reflection handling, viewing angle, size and stand dimensions using exact-model information.
  6. Validate the complete setup. Check ports needed for audio equipment and other consoles, then confirm local price and availability.

Bottom line for PS5 Pro buyers

The sensible target is a 4K TV with at least one verified 4K/120 HDMI input, plus VRR and ALLM if you want smoother variable-rate play and automatic low-latency switching. Confirm those features for the exact regional model and port, connect the PS5 Pro directly during setup, and start with the supplied HDMI cable. Choose 4K/60 only when your games and budget make 120 Hz unnecessary; choose 8K only for a specific need, not as a prerequisite for PS5 Pro.
