Choose a 360 camera if you want to capture the entire scene and decide later which direction to show. That flexibility is useful for unpredictable travel moments and moving sports, but reframing uses only part of the spherical image, so the exported clip has less detail than the camera’s headline resolution suggests. Compare the footage you intend to publish, along with stabilization, water protection, battery life at your chosen settings, and the gear and editing workflow you’ll actually use.

First decide whether 360 capture fits your footage

A 360 camera records the surrounding sphere, allowing you to select a conventional wide, vertical, or other view after recording. That can help when you cannot aim precisely in the moment: you can keep the camera rolling and choose the angle later. It also creates a post-production task. Tom’s Guide explains that a 16:9 or vertical reframe takes only a portion of the spherical image, so the final clip does not retain all of its full-sphere detail. An 8K label alone therefore does not tell you how detailed a cropped social video will look. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison discusses this trade-off.

  • Travel: A 360 camera can preserve a scene when you are not sure which direction will matter later. Consider whether you are willing to select and export views after the trip.
  • Sports: Reframing can help keep a rider, skier, or runner in view when the camera is mounted and you cannot operate it. Stabilization and horizon control matter as much as resolution for footage with frequent movement.
  • Everyday use: If you usually know what you want to frame and want a ready-to-share clip, a conventional action camera or phone may involve less editing. Choose 360 capture when the ability to change the view later is worth the workflow.

Compare the footage you can export, not just the largest resolution

Resolution and frame rate are capture-mode specifications, not a direct comparison of final image quality across brands. Check what the camera records in the modes you expect to use, then consider how much of that image you will crop out for your final framing.

Use the X5 specifications as a mode example

Insta360’s official X5 specifications, accessed in 2026, list 360 video at 8K (7680 × 3840) up to 30 frames per second, 5.7K up to 60 fps, and 4K up to 120 fps. The same specifications list single-lens video up to 4K60 and FreeFrame modes. These are manufacturer specifications; they do not establish that the X5 produces better final image quality than another camera. See the official X5 specifications.

  • Think bold. A collection of stickers that capture the Insta360 spirit, freely pasted wherever you like. In the Box: 1x Insta360 X3, 1x Charge Cable, 1x Protective Pouch, 1x Lens Cloth, and 1x User Guide.

  • 5.7K 360 CAPTURE & REFRAMING: Insta360 X3 captures 360 Active HDR video, with all the benefits of a traditional action camera. Choose your favorite angle after the fact with easy reframing in the AI-powered Insta360 app.
  • 4K WIDE-ANGLE SHOTS: Shoot wide-angle footage in maximum resolution with 4K30fps or a super-wide 170° field of view with 2.7K60fps MaxView.
  • KEEP FOOTAGE STABLE & LEVEL: FlowState Stabilization and Horizon Lock algorithms work together to deliver incredibly smooth videos.

Think about the export first: a high-resolution, lower-frame-rate 360 recording may suit a scenic travel clip, while a faster action sequence may lead you to a higher-frame-rate mode at a lower resolution. Confirm that the chosen mode supports the framing, playback, and editing workflow you need rather than assuming one setting is best for every clip.

For sports, check stabilization and horizon control

Fast turns, bumps, and changes in camera orientation can make action footage hard to watch. Compare stabilization and horizon handling in the modes you plan to record. Insta360 lists FlowState stabilization and 360-degree Horizon Lock for the X5; those are listed features, not a guarantee of a particular result in every activity or setting. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison offers reviewer judgments on stabilization across the X5, GoPro MAX2, and DJI Osmo 360. Treat that comparison as time- and model-specific, not a universal ranking. Read the comparison.

For cycling, skiing, running, or vehicle footage, consider where the camera will be mounted and whether the resulting angle will make later reframing practical. A pole or other compatible mount can create a view that appears to follow you, but verify compatibility with the camera and mounting accessory before buying. Insta360 describes magnetic mounting for the X5; check the current product details for the exact compatible mount. Insta360 X5 product details.

Match waterproofing and underwater use to the activity

Waterproof depth is model-specific, and a camera’s camera-only rating does not by itself establish that spherical footage will stitch cleanly underwater. Water can refract light and distort how the two lens views join.

  • X5: Insta360 lists a camera-only waterproof depth of 15 m and 60 m with its listed dive case in the official specifications accessed in 2026. The manufacturer says the Invisible Dive Case helps prevent underwater refraction, warping, and stitching issues for 360 capture. Follow the case and camera instructions for the specific activity. X5 specifications and X5 product details.
  • X4: Insta360 lists 10 m camera-only waterproofing. Its official guidance says to use the dive case for underwater 360 capture regardless of depth. Do not assume the X5’s depth rating or case guidance applies to the X4. X4 product details.
  • MAX2: Tom’s Guide reports 5 m waterproofing in its review. This is a review-published specification; verify the current manufacturer guidance and the exact intended use before relying on it. Tom’s Guide’s MAX2 review.

If you only expect rain, splashes, or surface use, a deep-water housing may not be necessary; for underwater 360 footage, choose a case specifically intended for that camera and follow its depth rating. A housing can add bulk, so consider whether you need it for the trip rather than treating it as a universal accessory.

Plan around battery life at the settings you will use

Battery estimates vary by capture mode and test conditions. Insta360’s official X5 hardware specifications report about 79 minutes at 8K/50 fps, about 140 minutes at 8K/30 fps, and about 200 minutes in 6K/24 fps Endurance Mode under the manufacturer’s stated lab conditions. These are mode-specific estimates, not a promise of runtime on a real trip. The listed battery capacity is 2400 mAh. Official X5 hardware specifications.

For perspective, Insta360’s X4 product page lists a 2290 mAh battery and 135 minutes at 5.7K30. That manufacturer figure is for a different camera and setting, so it is not a direct runtime comparison with the X5 modes above. Official X4 product page.

If your plan involves long recording sessions, estimate how much continuous capture you need at your intended resolution and frame rate, and consider a spare battery only if that session length calls for one. Lab estimates cannot account for every shooting pattern or trip condition.

Check media requirements and the editing workflow

Fast, high-resolution recording needs media that meets the camera’s specified requirements. Insta360 specifies UHS-I V30 or faster media for the X5. Choose a card that meets that class and confirm compatibility with the camera; do not infer a suitable card capacity without estimating how much footage you intend to record. X5 specifications.

  • Considering a previous generation: The X4 can be evaluated against its own published figures, including 5.7K30 battery runtime and 10 m camera-only waterproofing. Its underwater 360 case guidance differs from a simple camera-only depth decision. X4 product page.
