To check a VPS’s internet speed, install Ookla’s official Speedtest CLI on the VPS and run speedtest. The result measures the connection between that VPS and a selected Speedtest server at that time; it does not certify every network route or prove that a provider has violated a plan commitment.
Install Ookla Speedtest CLI on the VPS
- Connect to the VPS. Use SSH or the provider’s console with an account that can install packages.
- Check the operating system and architecture. Ookla lists Linux packages for i386, x86_64, armel, armhf, and aarch64. Choose the instructions for the VPS’s actual distribution and architecture on Ookla’s official Speedtest CLI page.
- For Debian or Ubuntu, use Ookla’s repository setup and package. The official page shows these commands:
curl -s https://packagecloud.io/install/repositories/ookla/speedtest-cli/script.deb.sh | sudo bash sudo apt-get install speedtest
Before troubleshooting an unexpected command or result, check whether an older or unofficial package is already installed. Ookla warns that other binaries can conflict and provides removal examples on its installation page. Use that page’s current instructions for distributions other than Debian and Ubuntu rather than assuming the commands above apply.
Run a test and read the results
On the VPS, run:
speedtest
Follow any license or privacy prompts shown by the installed build. The output reports download and upload bandwidth, latency, and packet loss—different measures of the connection, not interchangeable versions of a single speed score.
- Download bandwidth indicates the rate at which data reaches the VPS from the test server.
- Upload bandwidth indicates the rate at which data leaves the VPS for the test server.
- Latency reflects responsiveness along the tested path.
- Packet loss shows whether packets were lost during that measurement.
To inspect options supported by the version you installed, run speedtest --help. Server selection and output-format options can vary by build; an older Speedtest CLI man-page mirror lists examples such as --servers, --server-id, and --format, but verify available options with the live command before relying on them.

Repeat tests consistently before drawing conclusions
A single result is a snapshot of the VPS’s route to one test server. Server load, routing, shared-host contention, transient conditions, and the VPS plan’s bandwidth ceiling can all affect it. Ookla’s CLI documentation describes the tool and its structured output. VPS-specific caveats include interpreting results in the context of server selection, repeated measurements, and plan limits.
- Run several tests at different times rather than relying on one unusually high or low result.
- When comparing results across periods, use the same selected test server and similar conditions where practical.
- Record the timestamp and test-server selection with each result.
- Compare the repeated measurements with the bandwidth limits stated for your VPS plan. If results suggest a persistent cap, try a second known server or a separate measurement method before treating it as a provider-side fault.
For comparisons between VPS results or providers, consider download, upload, latency, packet loss, consistency over time, and test-server location together. These measurements can help identify a pattern, but the CLI results alone do not establish a universal benchmark threshold or provider ranking.
