In Steam for Windows or macOS, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and read the Download Region field. Start with the region where you are located, or the closest available region. If a PUBG update is slow or Steam reports a content-server problem, test another nearby region and retest the download.
That setting selects Steam’s content server for downloads and updates. It does not prove that PUBG matches are using the same geographic server, change your matchmaking region, or cure every in-game latency and connection problem. Download symptoms and match symptoms need separate checks.
What Steam’s Download Region actually controls
Steam’s Download Region is a content-delivery preference. It tells Steam which regional content server to use for game downloads, patches and updates. Steam Support recommends selecting the region where you are located or the nearest available region in its Slow Downloads and Connection to Content Servers guidance.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS uses network services beyond Steam’s file-delivery system when you sign in, enter matchmaking and play a match. Consequently, a fast Steam download does not demonstrate that your match connection is healthy, and changing the Download Region is not a guaranteed way to lower in-game ping. Use the download-region test for download or update problems; use the Steam and PUBG connectivity checks later in this guide for lobby, matchmaking or gameplay problems.

How do I check my Steam download region?
- Open the desktop Steam client. Use the installed client rather than a web browser.
- Open Settings. Select Steam in the client’s top menu, then choose Settings.
- Open Downloads. In the Settings sidebar, select Downloads.
- Read Download Region. The selected location is shown in the Download Region drop-down list.
- Compare it with your location. If it is not your own region, choose your location or the closest available region, as Steam Support advises.
- Apply the change and retest. Close Settings, resume or restart the PUBG download or update, and observe whether the content-server error or speed changes.
Steam’s labels and region list can change as the client is updated. If your menu looks different, look for the Downloads page inside Steam Settings and the field named Download Region. The location shown there is the value to record when asking for help.
Which Steam download region should I use for PUBG?
Start with your own or nearest region
Choose the region that corresponds to your physical location, or the closest listed option. Geographic proximity is the sensible baseline because the route is usually shorter and the local content service is intended to serve that area. Do not select a distant location simply because it appears in a list or because another player uses it.
Use a nearby alternative as a diagnostic
A regional content server can be slow, overloaded or affected by a hardware problem. Steam Support’s download guidance says to test nearby regions when downloads are slow. Change one setting, resume the same download and compare the result. This is a troubleshooting test, not evidence that the alternate region should become your permanent choice.
When a content-server error persists
If your nearest region is already selected and Steam still reports that no content servers are available for the game, try the next-nearest region. Steam documents this approach in its article on No Steam content servers are currently configured to deliver content for this game. Also review Steam’s guidance for Steam Servers Are Currently Unavailable or Too Busy before assuming your computer is at fault.
Return to the normal region after testing
Once the download completes or the regional outage has cleared, return to your own or nearest region. Leaving a distant region selected can send future downloads over a less suitable route and can make later troubleshooting harder because the selected location no longer reflects your normal setup.

What changing Download Region does not do
- It does not select the PUBG match server shown to the player.
- It does not guarantee lower ping, fewer packet losses or a different matchmaking pool.
- It does not repair a blocked game executable, a failing router, an overloaded Wi-Fi link or an ISP outage.
- It does not establish that Steam’s content servers and PUBG’s game services are healthy at the same time.
If a PUBG match is lagging while Steam downloads quickly, treat that as an in-game network problem. If a PUBG update is slow but matches are normal, concentrate on Steam’s content-server path. Keeping those cases separate prevents repeated region changes that cannot address the real fault.
Steam network checks for downloads and sign-in
When the Download Region test does not help, work from the service outward. Steam’s Troubleshooting Network Connectivity guidance identifies several checks.
Check whether Steam itself is having an incident
Look for a Steam service outage or an overloaded content service before changing local settings repeatedly. A service-side problem can affect several regions at once. Record the time and the exact message so you can distinguish a temporary incident from a persistent local failure.
Restart the network path
- Pause the PUBG download and exit Steam normally.
- Restart the computer.
- Power-cycle the router according to its manufacturer’s instructions, then wait for the internet connection to return fully.
- Open Steam, resume the download and test again.
This clears transient router state and gives you a clean comparison, but it will not fix an ISP outage or a Steam-side incident.
Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi
Connect the computer directly to the router with Ethernet if possible, then repeat the download and, separately, a PUBG connection test. A wired result that is stable while Wi-Fi is unstable points toward wireless interference, signal strength, channel congestion or the access point rather than the Steam region. You do not need special hardware to perform the test; any sound Ethernet connection is sufficient.

Review firewall and security software
Check whether the operating-system firewall, security suite or antivirus has placed Steam or PUBG in a blocked or restricted state. Use the product’s allow-list or application-permission controls rather than turning protection off permanently. If a security product has a temporary diagnostic mode, follow its documentation and restore normal protection immediately after the test.

Pause cloud synchronization, video uploads, large downloads, launchers and other applications that consume substantial bandwidth. PUBG Support specifically advises closing programs that use significant bandwidth when the game cannot connect. Check the result with those applications closed, then re-enable them one at a time if you need to identify a conflict.
Account for managed networks and proxies
University, workplace and public networks may block ports or impose proxy rules that a home connection does not. Steam notes that university networks and proxies can prevent required traffic from passing. Ask the network administrator whether gaming traffic is restricted; do not attempt to bypass an organization’s controls without permission. Testing the same computer on an approved home or mobile connection can show whether the network, rather than the PC, is the limiting layer.
Investigate time-of-day patterns
If the issue appears only during particular hours, Steam identifies possible ISP traffic shaping as something to investigate with the provider. Keep a short log of the date, local time, download region, observed behavior and whether another connection worked. That evidence is more useful to an ISP than a general report that “Steam is slow.”
PUBG connection troubleshooting when Steam is online
PUBG Support’s GENERAL CONNECTIVITY GUIDE and Cannot connect to the game article provide a separate diagnostic path. The cited general guide is older, so treat its principles as useful checks while verifying current operating-system, router and game-client labels before applying version-specific instructions.

1. Check PUBG service status
Check PUBG’s official service-status channel before changing router settings. Scheduled maintenance or an incident can prevent sign-in and matchmaking for many players. Note the status and time; a local change cannot resolve a confirmed service outage.
2. Restart the computer and router
Restart both devices, allowing the router to finish reconnecting before launching the game. This is a basic but important separation test: if a clean restart restores service briefly and the fault returns, continue with the wired, firewall and ISP checks instead of repeatedly changing Steam’s Download Region.
3. Compare wired and wireless connections
Play or connect over wired Ethernet when available. If the wired test succeeds while Wi-Fi fails, investigate wireless placement, interference and access-point configuration. If both fail in the same way, the fault is more likely to involve the service, ISP route, firewall, router policy or the game installation than radio interference alone.
4. Verify ISP service and router firmware
Confirm that other devices can reach the internet and that your ISP reports no outage. Check the router manufacturer’s support page for firmware updates and follow its documented upgrade process. Firmware menus differ by model; avoid applying instructions for a different router or disabling security controls as a shortcut.
5. Test an alternate internet connection
When practical, connect the computer through another trusted connection, such as a phone hotspot or a different household network, and attempt the same sign-in or matchmaking action. A successful alternate-connection test implicates the original router, ISP route or network policy. A failure on both connections points attention toward PUBG service health, the computer, security software or the game client.

6. Test VPN use carefully
PUBG Support lists trying a VPN as a troubleshooting test. A VPN can change the route, but it can also add latency, congestion or policy complications. Use a reputable service you are permitted to use, record whether the symptom changes, and disconnect it afterward if it does not help. Do not treat a temporary improvement as proof that a particular VPN or permanent VPN use is required.
7. Update the network adapter driver
Install the current network-adapter driver supplied through your computer manufacturer or the adapter manufacturer. Reboot if requested, then repeat the same connection test. Driver menus and package names vary by operating system, so use the vendor’s instructions rather than an unverified package.

UPnP is a controlled test, not a universal fix
The older PUBG connectivity guide suggests trying both enabling and disabling UPnP. If you perform this test, change only the UPnP setting, note its original state, reboot the router if its documentation requires it, and repeat the same PUBG action. Consult the router manual because menu names and security implications vary. Restore the setting that provides the required behavior without exposing more services than your network needs.

PUBG’s guide labels disabling a router firewall “NOT RECOMMEND.” Do not make that a normal troubleshooting step. A router firewall protects every device behind it, and removing it can create a security exposure without fixing the actual route or service issue. Prefer documented application permissions, firmware updates, a wired test and an alternate connection. If a qualified network administrator needs a narrowly scoped diagnostic, follow that administrator’s written procedure and restore protection immediately.
Use the symptom to choose the next test

What to collect before contacting PUBG Support
If the problem continues, provide a reproducible description rather than only saying that PUBG is offline. PUBG Support asks for details that let it correlate your report with service events and network conditions.
- The exact error message and the screen where it appears.
- The date and precise local time of each occurrence, including your time zone if relevant.
- Your usual geographic region and country.
- Your internet-service provider and whether the connection was wired or wireless.
- The PUBG server or match ID, when the client displays one.
- Whether Steam downloads and other internet services worked at the same time.
- Which checks you performed: restart, alternate Download Region, router restart, wired test, alternate connection, firewall or antivirus review, VPN test and driver update.
- Screenshots or a short video showing the error and the relevant time, as requested in PUBG’s support guidance.
Include the original Download Region and any temporary region used for testing, but describe it accurately as a Steam content-server setting. This prevents support from interpreting a download-region change as a claimed change to your PUBG match server.
A repeatable diagnostic order
- Classify the symptom as Steam download/update, Steam sign-in, PUBG sign-in/matchmaking or in-game latency.
- Check the relevant service-status page before changing local configuration.
- For a download problem, verify Steam > Settings > Downloads > Download Region, start with your own or nearest region, and test one nearby alternative.
- Pause other bandwidth-heavy applications and repeat the same action so the comparison is meaningful.
- Restart the computer and router, then test with wired Ethernet if available.
- Review firewall, antivirus, proxy and managed-network restrictions without disabling security as a routine step.
- For PUBG-only failures, follow the game-specific checks: alternate connection, ISP and router review, cautious VPN test, UPnP test if necessary, and network-adapter driver update.
- Record times, errors and results. Restore temporary settings, then send the complete record to PUBG or Steam Support if the problem remains.
This sequence changes one layer at a time. It avoids using a Steam content setting as a substitute for diagnosing the router, ISP, firewall or PUBG service.
