On your PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Your installed system software version is shown on that screen. You can read and record it without opening the update controls.
That number is the starting point for any compatibility research, but Sony’s support pages do not establish which versions support a jailbreak. Do not treat the version number or an “Up to date” message as proof that a jailbreak will work.
Find the PS5 system software version
Use the console’s built-in information page rather than an online account page or a third-party utility. The official route is:

- Select System Software.
- Select Console Information.
- Read the value labeled as the system software version and record it exactly, including every digit and decimal point.
Sony documents this route in its PS5 and PS4 system-software version support page. The menu is an information screen; simply opening it does not download or install an update.

What “Up to date” means
Sony says the words “Up to date” beneath the version indicate that the console has the latest version available to it at that time. That status describes update availability, not jailbreak compatibility. A console can be fully up to date and still have no publicly verified jailbreak for its version, or a version could be discussed by independent researchers without Sony recognizing or supporting it.
Other details on the same screen
Console Information can also show the PS5 console name, IP address and MAC address. These identifiers are not needed to report a system software version. If you send a screenshot to a forum, researcher or technician, crop or obscure the IP and MAC addresses and any other personal or network information first. Type the version into your notes when possible instead of posting the entire screen.
Do not confuse checking with updating
The version-reading page and the update controls are separate destinations. If your only goal is to find the installed version, stop at Console Information. Do not select an update command while documenting the current state.

Sony’s separate PS5 system-software update instructions describe the update workflow. The existence of that workflow does not make it a compatibility check for any jailbreak.

Should you update before researching a jailbreak?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer based on the information on Sony’s support pages. Sony’s official position is that users should install current software. Its update page states: SIE strongly recommends always installing the latest update as soon as possible after the update is released.
That is Sony’s maintenance and security recommendation, not a statement that the latest release is exploitable or that an older release is safe to modify.
Jailbreak compatibility is version-sensitive. Updating can replace the software version you were trying to evaluate, so an update decision should be made only after you have checked current, independently verified information for your exact version and console model. The Sony pages cited here do not say which firmware versions are exploitable, whether a particular exploit is reliable, or whether updating preserves or removes a specific opportunity. They therefore cannot justify a compatibility decision.
A cautious order of operations
- Read first: Open Console Information and write down the complete system software version before selecting any update option.
- Preserve the record: Note the date, console model information shown elsewhere in the system menus if relevant, and whether the screen says “Up to date.” Do not post network identifiers.
- Verify compatibility separately: Look for a current, technically specific source that names your exact version and explains its evidence. A generic claim that “PS5 jailbreaks exist” is not enough.
- Decide on updates deliberately: If security, online services or ordinary game support matters more than preserving the current version, follow Sony’s update guidance. If you are evaluating a version-sensitive claim, do not update merely because an update prompt appears; first understand what changing versions means for your decision.
- Use only trustworthy procedures: Avoid files, DNS tricks, payloads or instructions whose origin and integrity you cannot verify. Sony warns that update data obtained from other sources or by methods other than those specified by Sony can impair operation and may affect warranty and repair services.
This sequence separates the factual task—identifying your installed version—from a later decision for which the available Sony documentation provides no compatibility answer.

Does your PS5 version support a jailbreak?
The version number is necessary information, but it is not sufficient evidence. The official pages used for the menu path and update guidance do not publish a jailbreak compatibility table. They do not confirm an exploit for any numbered release, define required hardware conditions, or guarantee that a procedure will work after a reboot or on every console.

When evaluating a claim elsewhere, check whether it clearly identifies:
- the exact system software version range, not merely a broad generation or release year;
- whether the claim concerns a proof of concept, a temporary exploit, a persistent modification or a finished user-facing tool;
- required console model, hardware revision, network state and accessories;
- the date of the information and whether later system updates changed the conditions;
- the author’s evidence, limitations and recovery procedure if the console fails to boot or a process is interrupted.
Do not infer compatibility from the “Up to date” label, from the fact that a downloaded file is called a jailbreak, or from a video showing a different version. A compatibility statement should be tied to your exact installed release and supported by a source you can independently assess.
How to document the result safely
Make a private record
Write the version exactly as displayed. Include the date you checked it and, if you are comparing information over time, note whether the console reported “Up to date.” A plain text note avoids accidentally sharing the IP address or MAC address that can appear in a screenshot.

If a trusted technical discussion requires visual confirmation, crop the image to the version line or redact the console name, IP address and MAC address. Never include your PlayStation Network sign-in details, authentication codes, recovery codes or payment information. The version alone is normally the relevant data point for a compatibility question.

Keep update prompts separate
If the console displays an update notification while you are collecting information, dismiss it or leave the update workflow without confirming installation. Return to Console Information to verify the version you actually have. A downloaded update package is not the same as an installed update; only the version shown in the information screen establishes the current installed software.

The menu labels look different
Check that you are in the PS5 system settings rather than the PS4 settings site or a game’s settings. Sony’s current route uses System, then System Software, then Console Information. Wording can vary slightly with language settings, but the information page remains under the system-software section. Change the console language temporarily only if you need to match a guide, then return it to your preferred language.
You opened an update page by mistake
Back out without confirming an installation and return to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Reading the version there is the non-destructive step. If an update has already been installed, record the new version shown on the information page; do not rely on the version number in a notification or download prompt.
The console is offline
The installed version is stored on the console, so opening Console Information is different from checking Sony’s servers for a newer release. You may be unable to confirm whether the console is current while offline, but you can still read the version already installed. Treat the absence of an “Up to date” status as an availability limitation, not as evidence that the software is old or compatible with a jailbreak.

You cannot find Console Information
Use the exact hierarchy rather than searching for “firmware” in the top-level settings. Sony generally calls the value system software version; “firmware version” is common reader terminology but may not be the label on the screen. If the menu still does not appear, confirm that you are using a PS5 and not a PS4, and that the console software has finished any restart or setup process before navigating again.
Sony’s update warnings and licence terms
Sony recommends installing official updates, including security updates, as they are released. It also warns that update data from unauthorized sources or methods can impair the console and may affect warranty and repair services. Use Sony’s documented update route if you choose to update, and keep a record of the version before doing so.
Sony’s US PLAYSTATION®5 SYSTEM SOFTWARE LICENCE AGREEMENT restricts bypassing or circumventing security or authentication mechanisms, downgrading, using unauthorized hardware or software, and unauthorized exploitation. Those are terms of Sony’s US agreement; they are not a substitute for legal advice and should not be generalized automatically to every country. Review the terms that apply in your jurisdiction and consider the possible effects on support, repair and online-service access before modifying a console.
Before taking any further action
Use this checklist to keep the version check distinct from a modification decision:
- Have you opened Settings > System > System Software > Console Information?
- Did you copy the complete system software version exactly?
- Did you avoid selecting System Software Update and Settings while you were only checking?
- If you captured a screenshot, did you hide the IP address, MAC address and console name?
- Are you treating “Up to date” as an update-status message rather than jailbreak evidence?
- Does any compatibility claim you are considering name your exact version, hardware conditions, date and limitations?
- Have you considered Sony’s update, warranty, repair and licence warnings for your region?
Once these points are complete, you have an accurate baseline for evaluating version-sensitive information. The baseline itself does not confirm that a jailbreak exists or that installing one is advisable.
