On your PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Read the value shown for the system software version. That is the firmware number to use when checking whether a homebrew setup is relevant to your console.
Sony also displays “Up to date” beneath the version when the console has the latest system software installed. Checking this screen only reads the installed version; it does not require starting an update.
How do I check my PS5 firmware version?
Use the following menu path from the PS5 home screen:
- Open Settings from the top-right of the home screen.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software.
- Open Console Information.
- Read the value beside the system software version and record it exactly, including every number, period and hyphen shown.
The version displayed in Console Information is the installed system software version. It is the specific value you should compare with current documentation for any homebrew tool or exploit. Do not substitute the console model, the game version, the controller software version or a date for this number.

Where do I find my PS5 system software version?
The version is not shown on the general System screen. It is inside the Console Information page under System Software. If you are looking at a page that offers update controls, go back one level and select Console Information instead; viewing the information page is the read-only part of this check.
Write the value down before opening other menus. Firmware research often distinguishes between very similar-looking releases, so dropping a digit or copying only part of the displayed string can lead to the wrong compatibility conclusion. A practical record contains:
- The complete system software version exactly as displayed.
- The date on which you read it.
- Whether the console is enrolled in the system software beta programme.
- The name and date of the compatibility documentation you intend to consult.
What does “Up to date” mean on the Console Information screen?
“Up to date” is Sony’s status message indicating that the latest system software is installed. It is a status check, not a second firmware number. The version value remains the important identifier for compatibility research.

How is checking the version different from updating the PS5?
Checking and updating are separate actions in the PS5 interface:

Do not start an update merely to discover which version the console is running. Open Console Information first, record the value, and leave the update controls alone until you have decided what you want to do. Installing a newer release can change the firmware state that your homebrew research is concerned with.
What if my PS5 is enrolled in the system software beta?
Sony says the beta version is also shown at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Read and record the beta version displayed there in the same way as a standard release. Do not assume that a beta build should be treated as identical to a similarly numbered public release; use documentation that explicitly covers the version installed on your console.
Why the firmware number matters for homebrew
A firmware number is an input to compatibility research, not proof that a particular homebrew setup will work. Community documentation explains that PS5 homebrew depends on the firmware installed and on the public exploits currently available for that firmware. Those projects can change quickly as new releases, patches and tools appear.

Several technical layers are often discussed together but are not interchangeable:
- Exploit: a published vulnerability or entry point associated with particular software conditions.
- Payload: code delivered after an entry point that performs a function on the console.
- Homebrew setup: the complete sequence of prerequisites, tools and procedures needed to run software.
A project page may document capabilities without being a complete compatibility chart for every PS5 firmware. For example, the etaHEN project describes homebrew-related capabilities, but its repository landing page should not be read as an exhaustive list of every firmware and every working setup. Treat each claim as scoped to the documentation and version it names.
How to verify homebrew compatibility after checking the version
Once you have the exact value from Console Information, compare it with current documentation from the maintainers of the exploit or tool you are considering. Evaluate the page on four separate axes:

Do not turn an old community compatibility table into a permanent answer. Before following instructions, confirm that the maintainer still identifies your exact firmware and that the documented steps apply to the same tool versions. If the page is vague, names only a neighboring firmware or omits a date, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than filling the gap with a guess.

Should I update before trying homebrew?
There is no general reason to update simply because an update is offered. First identify the installed version, then research the implications of changing it. A newer official release may alter the conditions on which a community exploit or payload depends, while remaining on an older release may have its own support and security trade-offs.
Sony strongly recommends using its official update procedures. Its support guidance warns that using update data from another source or an altered update method can affect console operation and may affect warranty or repair service. Do not treat an unofficial update package, modified updater or random download as a harmless way to reach a desired firmware.
If you decide that an official update is appropriate, use Sony’s documented update path and read the on-screen prompts carefully. That is a separate decision from checking the version; complete the compatibility review before starting it.

Opening the update page instead of Console Information
The update page is designed to search for or install a newer release. It is not the best place to record the installed version. Return to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and copy the value shown there.

Starting an update to reveal the version
You do not need to begin an update to identify the current firmware. The installed value is already available in Console Information. Starting an update can change the very condition you are trying to document.
Recording only part of the version
Compatibility notes may distinguish releases that look nearly identical. Copy the entire displayed string, preserving punctuation and leading zeroes if they appear. If you are transcribing it manually, check the screen a second time before searching.
Assuming “Up to date” proves homebrew support
“Up to date” describes Sony’s release status. It does not mean that a homebrew exploit, payload or complete setup works on that firmware. Compatibility must be established by the relevant community documentation.

Confusing a beta build with a public release
Beta participants can see their beta version in Console Information. Identify that status when recording the firmware and consult documentation that specifically addresses it.
Trusting a compatibility table without checking its scope
A list may describe an exploit but not the payload or full setup, may cover only certain firmware revisions or may no longer reflect the current scene. Check who maintains it, which exact versions it names and when it was updated.
