To estimate your portfolio’s exposure to selected AI stocks, separate shares you own directly from the same companies held inside your ETFs and mutual funds. Use dated account values as the denominator, multiply each fund’s portfolio share by each selected company’s weight in that fund, then add direct and indirect exposure by company.

The result is an estimate, not a permanent fact: your definition of “AI stock,” the accounts you include, market prices, and the dates of fund holdings all affect the percentage.

What this calculation tells you

“AI stocks” is not a formal asset class with one official membership list. A company may develop AI models, sell computing hardware, provide cloud infrastructure, use AI in a broader software business, or simply be associated with the theme by investors. Two careful investors can therefore produce different results while both following a sound method.

This exercise answers a narrower and more useful question: What percentage of the portfolio being analyzed is economically exposed to the specific companies I have chosen, including exposure embedded in funds?

It does not predict returns, measure the quality of a company, or determine whether the concentration is appropriate. Investor.gov explains that allocation decisions depend partly on an investor’s time horizon and risk tolerance. A percentage that is comfortable for one investor may be unsuitable for another.

Direct and indirect exposure are different

  • Direct exposure is the market value of individual company shares in your account.
  • Indirect exposure is your estimated share of a company held inside an ETF or mutual fund.
  • Combined exposure is direct exposure plus indirect exposure to the same company across every included fund and account.

A fund ticker is not a look-through exposure number. Its name or strategy may suggest a theme, but only its dated holdings and weights show how much of your money is tied to a particular company.

Decide what counts before collecting numbers

Make a written company list

Write the list of companies you will count before looking at the result. Explain your inclusion rule in one sentence, such as “I am counting companies whose primary business is AI software, AI infrastructure, or the hardware and cloud services used to run AI systems.” You can use a narrower list of a handful of companies if that is the question you are trying to answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not quietly add or remove a company because doing so makes the final percentage look more reassuring. If you change the list later, label the new calculation with a new date and definition.

Choose the accounts and assets

List the accounts included: taxable brokerage accounts, individual retirement accounts, workplace retirement plans, and any other account for which you can obtain a reliable current value. Include employer stock or other investments only when you can obtain a dependable value and have deliberately decided that they belong in the analysis.

Decide how you will treat cash and assets that are not in your selected list. They remain part of the total portfolio denominator even though they contribute no exposure to the selected companies. Excluding them would make the AI percentage look larger than the share of the entire portfolio.

Collect a dated portfolio inventory

Use one statement date for the denominator where possible

From each brokerage or retirement-account statement, record every individual stock, ETF, and mutual fund and its market value. Record the statement date beside each value. If accounts have different statement dates, either use the closest dates available and disclose that mismatch or obtain values for a common date.

Add the market values of all included holdings and cash to obtain the total portfolio value. This is the denominator for every portfolio weight:

portfolio weight = holding market value ÷ total portfolio value × 100

Prices change during the day, so a current quote combined with an older statement can create a mixed-date result. The calculation can still be useful, but label it as such.

Calculate direct company weights

For each selected company held directly, divide its market value by the total value of the portfolio being analyzed. Keep direct positions separate from fund positions; do not count a fund’s ticker as if it were a company.

For example, if a selected company’s shares are worth $10,000 in a $100,000 portfolio, its direct weight is 10%:

$10,000 ÷ $100,000 × 100 = 10%

If the same company appears in two accounts, add the direct values first, then divide the combined value by the same portfolio denominator. Showing the account-level entries in your worksheet makes accidental omissions easier to find.

Look through ETFs and mutual funds

Find each fund’s dated holdings

Use the fund’s own holdings disclosure or regulatory filing. Look for a holdings, portfolio, or full-portfolio file and record the “as of” date, not merely the date you downloaded the file. The SEC says most ETFs post holdings daily and directs investors to fund websites for portfolio information. A daily posting can still be older than your account value if you are checking at a different time.

For mutual funds and other funds, use the latest holdings disclosure available to you and note its reporting date. Do not state that a fund owns a selected company without checking that fund’s dated disclosure.

Apply the look-through formula

For each fund and each selected company in that fund, calculate:

indirect portfolio exposure = fund weight in your portfolio × company weight inside the fund

Use decimal percentages in a spreadsheet or keep the percentage signs consistent. A fund that represents 20% of your portfolio and holds a company at 5% contributes an estimated 1 percentage point of portfolio exposure to that company:

20% × 5% = 1%

This is an arithmetic example, not a claim about a real fund. Repeat the calculation for every selected company in every included fund, then add the indirect contributions for each company.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse fund weight with company weight

If a fund is 20% of your portfolio, that does not mean each company in the fund is 20% of your portfolio. The company’s contribution is reduced by its weight inside the fund. Conversely, several funds can each make a small contribution to the same company, creating a larger combined exposure than the fund list suggests.

Worked example with direct holdings and fund overlap

The following illustration uses a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio. The company labels and fund holdings are arithmetic examples only; they are not statements about any real fund.

Holding or fund Portfolio value Portfolio weight Selected-company weight inside fund Indirect contribution
Company A held directly $10,000 10% Not applicable Direct exposure: 10%
Company B held directly $5,000 5% Not applicable Direct exposure: 5%
Fund X $20,000 20% Company A 5%; Company B 4% A: 1.00%; B: 0.80%
Fund Y $15,000 15% Company A 3%; Company C 6% A: 0.45%; C: 0.90%
Fund Z $10,000 10% Company C 2% C: 0.20%

The company-level result is:

Selected company Direct exposure Indirect exposure Estimated combined exposure
Company A 10.00% 1.00% + 0.45% = 1.45% 11.45%
Company B 5.00% 0.80% 5.80%
Company C 0% 0.90% + 0.20% = 1.10% 1.10%
Selected group total 15.00% 3.35% 18.35%

The group total is the sum of the selected companies’ combined weights. Keeping the company rows visible matters: an 18.35% group total conceals that most of the example’s exposure comes from Company A and Company B, while Company C is a much smaller contribution.

Recommended columns

  1. Account and fund: identify where the fund is held.
  2. Fund value: enter the dated market value from your account statement.
  3. Fund portfolio weight: divide fund value by the total portfolio value.
  4. Company: enter one selected company per row.
  5. Company weight in fund: copy the percentage from the fund’s dated holdings disclosure.
  6. Indirect contribution: multiply the fund portfolio weight by the company weight in the fund.
  7. Disclosure as-of date: record the date supplied by the fund.

Then create a company summary with one row per selected company. Sum all indirect contributions for that company, add direct exposure, and sort from largest to smallest. A pivot table can group the fund-company rows, but inspect the underlying rows whenever a result looks surprising.

Spreadsheet formulas

If the total portfolio value is in cell $B$1, a direct holding value is in B2, and a fund value is in B3, the basic formulas are:

  • =B2/$B$1 for a direct portfolio weight.
  • =B3/$B$1 for a fund portfolio weight.
  • =(B3/$B$1)*C3 for indirect exposure when C3 contains the company’s decimal weight inside the fund.
  • =SUMIF(company_column, selected_company, contribution_column) to add indirect contributions for one company, using your spreadsheet’s actual column ranges.

Format weights as percentages and preserve the unrounded values in the formulas. Round only the displayed result; rounding each fund contribution first can create a noticeable error when many funds are involved.

Compare the result on the right axes

Direct versus indirect

A large direct position gives you a different type of concentration from the same percentage spread across several funds. The worksheet should show both. A portfolio can appear diversified by ticker while still having substantial indirect exposure to the same companies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Company-level exposure versus group total

The group total answers how much of the portfolio is tied to your selected list. The company rows answer whether that total is broadly distributed or dominated by one position. Use both views rather than relying on a single headline percentage.

Fund contribution and overlap

For each selected company, list the funds contributing to its exposure. If the same company appears in several funds, the overlap is real exposure even though the positions are held through different wrappers. Investor.gov warns that a fund may not provide broad diversification when it is narrowly focused and recommends checking top holdings across multiple funds.

Date and completeness

Put the portfolio statement date and every holdings “as of” date in the report heading. Mark accounts you could not access and assets for which no reliable value was available. A result based on two accounts is not equivalent to a result based on four accounts, even if the percentages look precise.

How to interpret the percentage without a universal cutoff

There is no single percentage that is automatically safe, excessive, or appropriate for everyone. Time horizon, risk tolerance, liquidity needs, and the rest of an investor’s allocation matter. Treat the calculation as a visibility tool, not as an automatic buy, sell, or rebalance instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Investor.gov’s beginner guidance uses “at least a dozen carefully selected individual stocks” as a general educational rule of thumb and says that four or five individual stocks do not constitute a diversified stock portfolio. The guide does not make this a universal legal requirement or an individualized threshold. It also does not convert a portfolio’s AI exposure into a recommended percentage.

A broad-market fund can still have meaningful exposure to a small number of very large companies, while a thematic fund may be concentrated by design. The holdings calculation lets you see which situation applies to your accounts instead of inferring diversification from the number of fund tickers.

Do not compare your result with an invented “average household” benchmark. A current, generally applicable statistic for household exposure to AI stocks is not established here, and the definition of the category varies too much for an unlabeled average to be meaningful.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Counting only individual shares

Symptom: You total the stocks listed in the account and ignore funds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Obtain dated holdings for every included ETF and mutual fund, calculate each fund-company contribution, and add it to direct exposure.

Using the fund’s name as evidence

Symptom: You assume a fund has no exposure because AI is absent from its name, or assume a large exposure because AI appears in its marketing.

Fix: Use the fund’s holdings disclosure or filing and record the as-of date. Names and strategies are not substitutes for positions and weights.

Adding fund weights instead of company weights

Symptom: You add the full portfolio weight of every fund that owns a selected company.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Multiply each fund’s portfolio weight by the selected company’s weight inside that fund. Only the resulting contribution belongs in the company total.

Double-counting direct shares

Symptom: You count a direct company position once in the stock list and again as though it were a fund position.

Fix: Keep direct and indirect columns separate, then add them once in the company summary.

Mixing dates without disclosure

Symptom: Account values are current, but holdings files are several weeks or months old, and the report presents one apparently exact percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Display each date, call the result an estimate, and refresh the calculation when the date difference could materially affect the decision.

Leaving out an account because it is inconvenient

Symptom: You calculate exposure only in the account with the easiest downloadable statement.

Fix: Either include the other accounts or clearly label the result as covering only the accounts listed. Do not describe a partial calculation as your total portfolio exposure.

Relying on a single combined number

Symptom: A group percentage looks acceptable, but one company supplies most of it.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Fix: Keep the company-level table and the list of contributing funds. Concentration can be hidden by aggregation.

When the data is incomplete

Sometimes a retirement plan provides a balance but not a downloadable holdings file, or a fund discloses holdings on a different schedule from your statement. Do not fill missing cells with guesses. Instead, choose one of these clearly labeled approaches:

  • Complete-only view: calculate exposure for assets and accounts with reliable values, and state exactly what is excluded.
  • Stale-holdings estimate: use the latest available disclosure, preserve its as-of date, and explain that positions may have changed.
  • Scenario range: if you can establish more than one defensible holdings date, show separate dated results rather than blending them into a false point estimate.

If you cannot obtain a fund’s holdings or a reliable account value, that fund’s indirect exposure is not established by the calculation. Labeling it “unknown” is more accurate than assigning zero.

Refresh schedule and record keeping

Save the statement files, holdings files, calculation date, company definition, included accounts, and any exclusions with the worksheet. When you refresh, update market values and holdings weights together where possible. Keep the previous dated result so you can tell whether a change came from market movement, a fund rebalance, a new account, or a changed definition of the AI group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most ETFs’ daily holdings availability can make updates relatively frequent, but daily publication does not eliminate the need to check the specific as-of date. For every fund, the date attached to the weight is part of the data, not a footnote to discard.

Use the result as an allocation check, not a verdict

The completed worksheet should let you answer four practical questions:

  1. Which selected companies do I own directly?
  2. Which of those companies do my funds also own?
  3. Which funds and accounts create the overlap?
  4. What is the estimated direct-plus-indirect percentage for each company and for the selected group?

Those answers improve visibility, but they do not establish whether the allocation fits your circumstances. Interpret them alongside your time horizon and risk tolerance, and avoid treating a general educational rule of thumb as personalized investment advice.

This is general educational information, not a calculation of any reader’s actual portfolio or individualized financial advice. Because prices, fund holdings, account balances, and the definition of “AI stock” change, present every result with its date and assumptions.
