On a Pixel 8a or newer, check the cumulative battery cycle count at Settings → About phone → Battery information. Check estimated battery health at Settings → Battery → Battery health, then tap Battery capacity for the percentage remaining versus the phone’s original capacity.
Those dedicated screens are not available across the Pixel range. Pixel 6 and later phones, including Pixel Fold, can use Settings → Battery → Battery Diagnostics for battery problems, while Google specifically says several older models do not show a battery-health status.
Which Pixel models show cycle count and battery health?
Google documents both the cycle-count screen and the Battery health status feature for Pixel 8a and later. A Pixel Tablet does not offer the Battery health feature. Do not expect the same menus on every phone.

How to check your Pixel’s battery cycle count
A cycle count measures cumulative battery use. It is not the number of times you connected a charger. Using half of the battery twice adds up to one full cycle, even if the two discharge periods occur on different days.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap About phone.
- Tap Battery information.
- Read the Cycle count value. The same page may also show the battery’s manufacture date and first-use date.
The first-use date can be earlier than the day you bought or set up the phone. Google notes that factory quality checks may use the battery before retail sale, so an earlier date is not by itself evidence that the phone was previously owned.
What counts as one cycle?
Google’s example is straightforward: use the phone from 100% to 50%, charge it back to 100%, and you have used 0.5 cycle. A later 50% of battery use brings the cumulative total to one cycle. The count therefore reflects the total amount discharged and recharged over time, not charging-session frequency.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
For example, three separate 20% discharges add up to 0.6 cycle. Charging from 40% to 80% does not itself create a cycle; the relevant amount is the energy subsequently used. This is why someone who frequently tops up a phone can still accumulate cycles gradually without ever seeing a single 0%-to-100% session.
How to check your Pixel battery health and capacity
On eligible phones, Google provides both a plain-language status and an estimated percentage. The percentage compares estimated remaining capacity with the battery’s original capacity; it is not a direct laboratory measurement taken each time you open Settings.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery health.
- Read the status: Normal, Reduced or Unavailable.
- Tap Battery capacity to see the estimated remaining-capacity percentage.
What each status means
- Normal: Google says the estimated capacity is within normal limits.
- Reduced: Google says reached capacity is below 80% and recommends considering a battery replacement. Its exact guidance is: “When the capacity is labeled as ‘Reduced,’ Google recommends replacing your battery.”
- Unavailable: The phone cannot determine a battery-status result.
Initial health values are based on laboratory results and can differ from the battery’s actual condition. Treat the percentage as an estimate for decision-making, not as a precision measurement. A phone that reports Normal can still have a usage problem caused by an app, signal conditions or a recent software update; a Reduced result is evidence of worn capacity, not a prediction of the exact day the battery will stop working.
Capacity percentage versus cycle count
These two readings answer different questions. Cycle count describes accumulated use over the battery’s life. Battery capacity estimates how much energy the cell can hold now compared with when it was new. A relatively low count does not guarantee a high capacity, because heat, charging conditions and individual cell variation affect aging. Conversely, a higher count does not automatically mean the phone is unusable if runtime remains acceptable and the health status is Normal.
Neither reading is a real-time measurement of every battery behavior. A capacity estimate does not explain which app is draining power, and a cycle count does not reveal whether a charging port, cable or software process is causing trouble. Use the health screen for degradation and Diagnostics for symptoms.
If your Pixel does not show Battery health
Do not keep searching for a menu that your model does not support. Google specifically excludes Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro from the Battery health status indicator. Pixel Tablet also lacks the feature.

For a supported phone running Pixel software from the Pixel 6 generation onward, use the diagnostic tool instead:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery Diagnostics.
- Follow the checks shown for the symptom you are experiencing.
Battery Diagnostics is intended to assess performance and help determine whether replacement may be appropriate. It is useful for symptoms such as unusually short runtime or charging trouble, but it does not turn an older model into one that reports the dedicated Battery health status or cycle-count screen.

Google’s documented route applies to Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold. Menu availability can also depend on the installed Pixel software, so install pending system updates before assuming the tool is broken.
How to interpret the cycle count
Cycle count is most useful when combined with the phone’s estimated capacity, runtime and behavior. Google publishes model-family design guidance rather than a guarantee for each individual battery:
| Model family | Google’s published design guidance | Capacity reference | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold | About 800 charge cycles — Google, undated Pixel battery guidance | Designed to retain up to 80% capacity for about that many cycles | Google recommends replacement after the applicable count is reached or when remaining capacity falls below 80% |
| Pixel 8a and later | About 1,000 charge cycles — Google, undated Pixel battery guidance | Designed to retain up to 80% capacity for about that many cycles | Google recommends replacement after the applicable count is reached or when remaining capacity falls below 80% |
These figures are product guidance, not a promise that every battery will reach exactly that count or fail immediately afterward. The fuel gauge estimates capacity, and actual aging depends on temperature, charging and discharging behavior, usage patterns and other conditions.
Why two phones with the same count can differ
- Heat accelerates chemical aging, especially during charging or demanding use.
- Frequent deep discharges place a different load on a battery than lighter, intermittent use.
- Charging conditions and accessory compatibility affect operating temperature and charging behavior.
- Cell variation means two batteries from the same model family can age at different rates.
Use the count as an aging indicator, not as a stand-alone pass/fail test. A high count with acceptable runtime may not require immediate action, while a lower count accompanied by severe runtime loss deserves investigation.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The 80% reference is also not a hard shutdown point. Google’s wording is a replacement recommendation when the applicable count is reached or capacity falls below 80%, particularly if runtime has declined. It does not state that the phone will stop charging or become unsafe at that exact percentage.
Battery health assistance: what it changes
Google’s Battery health assistance feature is available on Pixel 6a and later, excluding Pixel Tablet. On Pixel 9a and later it is enabled by default and cannot be turned off. On the listed models from Pixel 6a through Pixel 9 Pro Fold, you can find its control at Settings → Battery → Battery health → Battery health assistance; Google recommends leaving it enabled.
The feature adjusts maximum battery voltage in stages beginning at 200 cycles and continuing toward 1,000 cycles. It may also tune charging speed as the battery ages. Google warns that small changes in runtime or charging performance can be noticeable. Those changes are deliberate longevity measures, not necessarily a charging fault.

Because the adjustments happen in stages, charging behavior may not look identical throughout the phone’s life. Do not disable the feature simply because charging slows slightly at one stage; Google designed those changes to reduce long-term stress. On Pixel 9a and later, the setting cannot be disabled, while supported earlier models expose a toggle in the Battery health menu.
When a fast-draining Pixel needs troubleshooting instead
A capacity estimate answers how much energy the battery can hold. It does not identify every cause of rapid drain. If the phone began losing charge quickly after an Android update, Google says a short period of higher drain can be normal while the device downloads and optimizes software.
Run Google’s overnight check
- Charge the phone fully.
- Close open apps.
- Disconnect the charger.
- Leave the phone idle overnight.
- Check the battery percentage in the morning.
Google’s troubleshooting guidance treats a loss of less than 10% overnight as expected under this test. A larger loss does not identify one specific failed component, but it gives you a reproducible symptom to report when using Battery Diagnostics or seeking repair.
Separate software drain from worn capacity
- If drain is temporary and began immediately after an update, allow time for optimization before concluding that the battery is worn.
- If drain is concentrated in one app, review that app’s background activity and update or remove it.
- If the phone loses charge while idle and continues to do so after the overnight test, run Battery Diagnostics on Pixel 6 and later.
- If the Battery health screen reports Reduced, the capacity estimate itself supports replacement consideration even when software usage looks normal.
Record the starting and ending percentages, whether Wi-Fi or mobile data was active, and whether the phone was unusually warm. Those details make a diagnostic result more useful than a vague report that the battery “feels bad.”
Battery-care practices Google recommends
Control heat while charging
Charge in a cool place around 25°C / 78°F. Keep the phone out of direct sun and avoid trapping it under bedding or other insulating material during charging. Heat is one of the conditions Google identifies as contributing to capacity decline.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use a compatible charger
Google recommends a compatible USB-C Power Delivery (PD) or Programmable Power Supply (PPS) charger. Charger compatibility does not restore lost capacity; it helps provide the charging behavior the phone is designed to use. Check that a replacement cable and charger meet the phone’s USB-C requirements rather than assuming every USB-C accessory behaves identically.
Use Adaptive Charging and current software
Adaptive Charging can reduce the time the battery remains at a high charge level. Keep Android updated as well, because updates can include power-management improvements and the diagnostics needed to investigate battery behavior.
Store an unused phone correctly
If you will leave a Pixel unused for more than 30 days, Google advises storing it at about 50% charge. Avoid storing it fully empty or fully charged for a prolonged period. Keep the stored phone in a cool, dry place and inspect it before putting it back into regular use.
When should you replace the battery?
Use three pieces of evidence together: the estimated capacity or health status, the cycle-count guidance for your model family, and the practical change in runtime. Replacement is the sensible next step when the phone reports Reduced, when the applicable rated cycle guidance has been reached, or when runtime has declined enough to interfere with normal use.

Google says a replacement can increase runtime, improve performance in cold or warm ambient temperatures and extend the phone’s useful life. The published cycle figures do not guarantee a failure date, so a phone should not be discarded solely because its count is near a guideline if it still meets your needs and shows no safety problem.
Choose repair based on skill and location
Google’s self-repair information points to genuine spare parts and step-by-step guides supplied through iFixit for supported devices and countries. Battery and part availability varies by exact model and region, so check the availability table for your location before buying anything. Google recommends self-repair only for people with relevant technical experience; everyone else should use a professional repair option.
A replacement battery listing is not automatically genuine or safe simply because it is advertised for a Pixel. Match the exact Pixel model, verify the part source and account for regional support before ordering. There is no single universal battery price or availability promise: the supported part and country determine what Google and iFixit can provide.
What to do about a swollen battery
A swollen battery is a safety issue, not a routine capacity warning. Do not press on the phone, pry it open or attempt to disassemble it. Google directs owners toward repair options and advises against placing the device in household waste. Keep the phone away from heat and further charging while arranging qualified service, and follow the repair provider’s instructions for transport and disposal.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check my Pixel’s battery cycle count?
On Pixel 8a and later, open Settings → About phone → Battery information. The page shows the cumulative cycle count and may also show manufacture and first-use dates. Google does not document this dedicated screen for older Pixel models.
How do I check my Pixel battery health?
On Pixel 8a and later, open Settings → Battery → Battery health. Read the Normal, Reduced or Unavailable status, then tap Battery capacity for the estimated percentage compared with original capacity.
Why is Battery health missing on my Pixel 8 or Pixel 7?
Google specifically says Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro do not indicate battery health status. Use Settings → Battery → Battery Diagnostics on those Pixel 6-and-later phones to investigate runtime or charging problems.
Does charging from 50% to 100% count as a cycle?
It counts as approximately 0.5 cycle because cycle count is cumulative battery use. Two 50% discharge-and-recharge amounts add up to one full cycle; connecting the charger itself is not what increments the count.
Is 80% battery health bad?
Google uses below 80% remaining capacity as a replacement reference and labels that condition Reduced. The percentage is an estimate, so combine it with runtime and behavior rather than treating exactly 80% as an instant failure point.

Can Battery Diagnostics show my battery percentage on an older Pixel?
Battery Diagnostics helps assess performance and battery problems on Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold. It is an official troubleshooting route, but it does not add the dedicated Battery health status or cycle-count screens to models that lack them.
Can I replace a Pixel battery myself?
Google says genuine parts and guides are available through iFixit for supported devices and countries. Self-repair is intended for people with relevant technical experience; otherwise use a professional repair service. Confirm the exact model and regional parts availability before ordering.
Should I keep using a phone with a swollen battery?
No. Do not press, pry open or disassemble a swollen Pixel, and do not put it in household waste. Stop charging it and arrange qualified repair or disposal guidance.
A practical decision path
- Identify the model. If it is Pixel 8a or later, open Battery information and Battery health. If it is Pixel 6 or later but older than 8a, use Battery Diagnostics for symptoms and do not expect a health-status screen.
- Read the available evidence. Record the cycle count, capacity estimate or status, and the real-world runtime you are seeing.
- Check for temporary causes. Consider a recent software update, heat, charging conditions and unusually active apps.
- Run diagnostics if runtime is abnormal. Use the overnight test and Battery Diagnostics where supported.
- Arrange replacement when warranted. A Reduced result, the applicable cycle guidance or unacceptable runtime each supports seeking a battery replacement.
- Escalate safety issues immediately. Stop handling a swollen device and use a qualified repair route rather than opening it yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Pixel phones show both cycle count and battery health?
Google documents both dedicated screens for Pixel 8a and later. Older Pixels may have Battery Diagnostics but not the Battery health status or cycle-count menu.
What does an Unavailable battery-health status mean?
The phone cannot determine a battery-status result. It is different from Reduced, which indicates estimated capacity below 80%.
Is Google’s 800- or 1,000-cycle figure a guarantee?
No. About 800 cycles applies to Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold, while about 1,000 applies to Pixel 8a and later. They are design guidance; actual aging varies with heat, charging, discharging and usage.
Does Battery health assistance reduce performance?
It can produce small, intentional changes in runtime or charging speed as it adjusts voltage and charging behavior to support battery longevity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What charger type does Google recommend?
Use a compatible USB-C PD or PPS charger. Compatibility supports appropriate charging behavior but cannot restore capacity already lost to aging.
The Bottom Line
Pixel 8a and newer phones show cycle count under Settings → About phone → Battery information and estimated health under Settings → Battery → Battery health. On older Pixels, use Battery Diagnostics rather than searching for an unavailable health screen. Treat 80% capacity and Google’s approximately 800- or 1,000-cycle figures as replacement guidance, then combine them with actual runtime and safety symptoms.
