Start with the phone’s own privacy records. On Android, open Settings > Security and Privacy (or Privacy) > Privacy Dashboard > Microphone and inspect every app and access time. Android 13 can show the previous seven days; Android 12 shows the previous 24 hours. On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone to review or revoke access, then use App Privacy Report for sensor and network activity. A microphone dot or orange indicator means a sensor is being used, not that spyware is proven; identify the app before deciding what to remove.
If someone may be monitoring you or could react to a change, make a safety plan with another device before uninstalling apps, changing settings, or resetting the phone.
What spyware and microphone monitoring mean
The Federal Trade Commission describes stalkerware, also called spyware, as software that someone installs on a phone or other device without the owner’s knowledge. Depending on its permissions and capabilities, it may track location, read messages and email, view photos and videos, monitor online activity, or activate the microphone to record conversations.
That definition matters because a visible microphone indicator does not identify the person behind an app or establish malicious intent. A phone displays the same warning for legitimate calls, voice assistants, accessibility services, video chats, audio recorders, and other software that has a valid reason to capture sound. Treat the indicator as an investigation prompt: determine which app accessed the sensor, whether it needed that access, and whether other evidence supports a spyware concern.

Start safely: preserve context before changing anything
Write down the date and time of an unexpected indicator, the app name shown by the phone, and what the phone was doing. A screenshot can preserve an app name or warning, but taking one may itself be visible to someone who has access to the device. If personal safety is a concern, ask an advocate whether documentation is safe and where to store it.
Use a trusted network and another device for help when possible. Do not install a “spyware cleaner” immediately, grant a new app broad permissions, or confront the suspected person from the potentially monitored phone. Third-party scanners cannot promise to detect every form of monitoring, while changing a permission or deleting an app can alert whoever installed it.
Check Android for microphone access
Menu names vary slightly by manufacturer and Android version, but the audit is built into Android 12 and later.
Review the permission history
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security and Privacy or Privacy.
- Open Privacy Dashboard.
- Select Microphone. If your concern includes other sensors, repeat the review for Camera, Location, and other sensitive permissions.
- Read each app name and the time of access. Google documents a previous-seven-day view on Android 13 and a previous-24-hour view on Android 12.
- Open an unfamiliar app’s entry. Revoke microphone permission and uninstall the app if you do not need it and can do so safely.
The dashboard is useful because it combines the permission involved, the app that requested it, and when access occurred. Compare the time with your own activity. A microphone entry during a phone call, video meeting, voice command, or recording session may be expected. An entry while the phone was idle deserves a closer look, but it is still not proof of malicious recording.
On supported Android versions, an app’s permission choices can include While using the app, Only this time, and Don’t allow. Choose the narrowest option that still lets a trusted app work. A recording or calling app may require access while it is active; it should not need unrestricted access when you never use its audio features. Recheck permissions after installing an app, signing into a different account, or updating Android, because an app’s function and permission request can change.
Identify an app from the live microphone indicator
Android 12 and later show a visible indicator when an app uses the microphone or camera. When the microphone indicator appears, tap it to identify the active app. You can also open Quick Settings to see which app is using, or recently used, the sensor. Compare that name with the Privacy Dashboard entry rather than relying on the icon alone.

If the indicator disappears before you can tap it, open Quick Settings promptly and then inspect the dashboard. Note whether the app was in the foreground, running a call, or providing an accessibility or voice feature. The indicator confirms sensor use; it does not reveal whether audio was saved, transmitted, or used improperly.

Run Google Play Protect
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture, then open Play Protect.
- Start the scan and read any warning or remediation message.
Google says Play Protect can reset permissions on some Android versions and may alert you when an app is removed for accessing personal information. It is an additional check, not a substitute for reviewing the dashboard, installed apps, and permissions yourself. An app can be unwanted without being detected as malware, and a clean scan does not prove that no one has monitored the phone.
Inspect apps you do not recognize
In Settings > Apps, sort through the complete installed-app list, including apps not placed on the home screen. Open an unfamiliar entry to see its permissions and uninstall option. Check the app’s name, icon, installation source, and requested permissions together; a generic name or an app with no clear purpose deserves closer scrutiny, but neither fact alone proves spyware.
Look for an app that requests microphone, camera, location, contacts, messages, or accessibility access without an obvious reason. Do not assume that a system component is malicious merely because its name is unfamiliar. If you cannot identify an app safely, record its details and consult a qualified digital-safety advocate rather than deleting it impulsively.
Check an iPhone for microphone access
Review and revoke microphone permission
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Microphone.
- Review every listed app. Turn access off for an app that has no clear audio-related purpose or that you do not recognize.
This screen shows which apps are allowed to request microphone access; it is the quickest way to remove unnecessary permission. Revisit it after installing a new app or after an operating-system update changes an app’s behavior. Denying access may disable voice messages, calls, dictation, or recording in a legitimate app, so test a trusted app after changing its setting.
Interpret the orange and green indicators
Apple states that an orange indicator appears at the top of the screen whenever an app uses the microphone without the camera. A green indicator means the camera is in use, including situations in which the camera and microphone are being used together.

When an indicator appears unexpectedly, open Control Center. iOS shows recent sensor use there, which helps connect the indicator to an app you just opened or used in the background. A legitimate call, voice assistant request, camera session, or recording can produce the same indicator as a malicious app. If Control Center identifies an app you do not recognize, record its name and review that app’s microphone permission before taking further action.
Use App Privacy Report for longer-term evidence
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report.
- Review sensor access for microphone and other hardware.
- Review the network-activity section for unexpected connections or activity from an app that should be inactive.
App Privacy Report adds context that the microphone-permission screen does not: it can show patterns of sensor use and network activity by app. Consider both sections together. A network connection by itself is not proof of surveillance, and an app can have a legitimate reason to contact its service. Repeated microphone access combined with unexplained network activity is a stronger reason to investigate than either observation alone.
Review profiles, apps, and accounts carefully
Look for apps, configuration profiles, or accounts you did not add. Do not immediately remove them if another person may be monitoring the phone or may notice the change. The safety section below explains how to decide when to preserve evidence and seek help first. An unfamiliar account can provide access even when no suspicious microphone app is present, so review account security as well as device permissions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAndroid and iPhone checks compared
| Check | Android | iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Permission-history visibility | Privacy Dashboard lists apps, permissions, and access times; Android 13 documents seven days and Android 12 documents 24 hours. | Microphone settings show which apps have permission. App Privacy Report adds sensor-access history when enabled. |
| Live microphone indication | Android 12 and later display an indicator; tapping it can identify the active app. | An orange indicator means microphone use without the camera; Control Center can show recent use. |
| Network-activity reporting | The built-in dashboard described here focuses on permissions and sensor access; it is not a complete network monitor. | App Privacy Report includes network activity by app. |
| App-scanning support | Google Play Protect scans apps and can warn about or remove harmful software; it may reset permissions on some versions. | The platform checks described here do not provide an equivalent user-run Play Protect scan; rely on permission review, App Privacy Report, system updates, and careful app inspection. |
| Removal safety | Uninstalling or revoking access may be visible to a person who installed monitoring software. | Removing an app, profile, or account may also alert a person with access to the device or account. |
Neither platform’s indicator is a verdict. Android gives a direct dashboard timeline and Play Protect scan, while iPhone combines per-app controls, indicator history in Control Center, and App Privacy Report. Use the controls available on your exact operating-system version rather than assuming that a missing menu means the phone is clean.
Warning signs that justify a closer investigation
The FTC identifies several reasons to investigate possible stalkerware:
- Battery life becomes noticeably shorter without a normal change in usage.
- Mobile-data use rises unexpectedly.
- The phone overheats while idle or performs unexplained restarts.
- Another person knows your exact location, private conversations, messages, or other details they should not know.
- Someone previously had unsupervised physical access to the phone.
These are signals, not diagnoses. Battery aging, poor reception, an operating-system update, cloud synchronization, video playback, a failing charger, and ordinary background services can cause the same symptoms. Corroborate a concern with permission history, the identity of the app using the sensor, App Privacy Report or other device records, and the circumstances in which the behavior occurs.

Pay attention to combinations rather than one isolated symptom. For example, unexplained data use plus an unknown app with microphone permission is more meaningful than battery drain alone. Exact knowledge of a private conversation may also come from an unlocked account, a shared device, or another person—not necessarily a microphone recording.
What to do when the microphone indicator appears unexpectedly
On Android
- Tap the microphone indicator or open Quick Settings to identify the app.
- Ask whether you intentionally started a call, recording, voice command, accessibility function, or other audio feature.
- Open Privacy Dashboard > Microphone and compare the app and time with the live alert.
- If the app has no legitimate reason to record, choose Don’t allow or revoke access, then uninstall it if doing so is safe.
- Run Play Protect and install pending Android and app updates.
On iPhone
- Open Control Center while the orange indicator is visible or immediately afterward.
- Identify the app associated with the recent microphone use.
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and disable access that is not justified.
- Check App Privacy Report for repeated sensor use or unexpected network activity.
- Update iOS and the app, and remove an unknown app only after considering the safety consequences.
Safety comes before deleting suspected stalkerware
If an abusive partner, family member, employer, or other person may be monitoring the phone, changing a permission or deleting an app can alert them. The FTC advises using another device to contact a domestic-violence advocate, digital-safety service, or law enforcement when appropriate. Avoid researching or making that call from the potentially monitored phone when possible.
Before changing anything, consider whether you need screenshots, dates, or other documentation. Do not confront the suspected person using the monitored device if that could increase danger. A safety professional can help decide whether to preserve the phone, replace it, or reset it. Safety planning is more important than immediately making the indicator disappear.
Resetting or replacing the phone
A factory reset can remove unwanted software, but it also erases personal data and may not solve an account-compromise problem. If you reset or replace the device, the FTC advises downloading apps again instead of restoring the old device backup, because a backup could reinstall stalkerware. Reinstall only apps you recognize and need.
From a safer device, change the phone passcode and important account passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and review account-recovery methods and signed-in sessions. Keep the operating system and apps updated. If a person still knows private information after a reset, investigate account access, shared location features, email forwarding, and other devices rather than assuming the microphone is the only route.

- A permission record shows sensor access, not who initiated it or what an app did with the recording.
- An indicator identifies microphone or camera use, not intent.
- Permission history covers only the time window and features exposed by that Android or iPhone version.
- A scan can miss newly installed, disguised, or account-based monitoring.
- Someone with the device passcode or an account password may access data without activating the microphone.
For that reason, use multiple independent clues: the app identity, access time, permission rationale, sensor history, network activity where available, account-security records, and the personal-safety context. No single screen can certify that a phone has never been monitored.

A practical decision checklist
- Indicator with a known activity: finish the call, recording, camera session, or voice command, then confirm that the indicator disappears.
- Indicator with an unknown app: capture the app name and time, revoke microphone access, run the platform’s available checks, and uninstall only when safe.
- Suspicious symptoms but no microphone history: review installed apps, account sessions, location sharing, passwords, and data use; spyware may use other permissions or accounts.
- Possible abuser involvement: stop making changes on the phone, use another device for advice, and create a safety plan before removal or reset.
- After cleanup: update the operating system, reinstall apps selectively, change credentials from a safer device, and enable two-factor authentication.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a microphone dot prove that spyware is installed?
No. It proves that an app is using the microphone. Calls, voice assistants, accessibility tools, video chats, and recording apps can produce the same indicator. Identify the app and compare its access time with your activity before drawing a conclusion.
How far back can Android show microphone access?
Google documents seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12 through Privacy Dashboard. The exact menu and history available can vary by Android version and manufacturer.
How do I find the app using my Android microphone right now?
On Android 12 or later, tap the microphone indicator. You can also open Quick Settings to identify the app using, or recently using, the sensor, then compare it with Privacy Dashboard.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What is the orange dot on an iPhone?
Apple says the orange indicator appears whenever an app uses the microphone without the camera. Open Control Center to see recent sensor use and identify the associated app.
Can Play Protect find every spyware app?
No. Play Protect is an additional Android check. It can warn about harmful software, remove some apps, and reset permissions on some versions, but a clean scan does not prove that the phone has never been monitored.
Should I delete an app I think is stalkerware immediately?
Not always. If an abusive person may be watching the phone, deletion or a permission change could alert them. Use another device to contact a digital-safety advocate or law enforcement and decide whether to preserve evidence, remove the app, replace the phone, or reset it.
Will a factory reset remove spyware?
A reset can remove unwanted software, but it erases data and does not fix compromised accounts. If you reset or replace the phone, download apps again instead of restoring the old backup, which could reinstall stalkerware.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if my phone has warning signs but no microphone history?
Review installed apps, account sessions, location sharing, passwords, data use, and other permissions. Monitoring may use location, messages, photos, or an account rather than the microphone.
The Bottom Line
Use the built-in records first: Android Privacy Dashboard and Play Protect, or iPhone microphone controls, Control Center, and App Privacy Report. Treat indicators and symptoms as clues rather than proof, corroborate the app and access time, and put personal safety ahead of immediate deletion or a factory reset.
