To check whether your PC can run a Steam game, open that game’s Steam store page, record its minimum and recommended requirements, then compare them with your Windows PC’s CPU, RAM, graphics processor, graphics memory or features, operating-system version, DirectX support, and available storage. Windows’ built-in DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag) supplies most of the hardware information. Treat a match as a compatibility indication, not a guaranteed frame-rate or launch result: Steam warns that systems at or near the published requirements can still experience performance or startup problems.

Find the requirements for the exact Steam game

Start with the game you intend to install. On its Steam store page, scroll to System Requirements. Record both columns or sections if the publisher provides them: Minimum and Recommended. Steam’s guidance is to compare your computer with the requirements shown on the individual game’s store page, rather than relying on a generic list for a franchise or a different edition. You can also consult the publisher’s support page if the store listing links to a more detailed specification.

The game listing is the authority for what that title expects. A Windows version that is adequate for installing Windows itself does not automatically satisfy a game’s operating-system, processor, graphics, or API requirements. Write the requirements down before checking your PC so that you compare the same categories and do not overlook a special condition.

Make a comparison worksheet

Copy each published line into a simple note or spreadsheet. Keep minimum and recommended values in separate columns. Include wording such as “64-bit,” a particular Windows release, a graphics feature, or a named storage amount; those qualifiers can matter as much as the model name.

Game requirement What to record Why the wording matters
Operating system Windows edition and version, plus 64-bit wording when shown A different Windows release or architecture may not satisfy the listing.
Processor Exact CPU model, generation or family, and any stated core or frequency condition Brand name or clock speed alone is not a reliable match for a named processor.
Memory Installed system RAM, usually in GB Installed RAM is different from the amount free while the game is running.
Graphics GPU model, VRAM amount, and any feature or API requirement A DirectX version installed in Windows and a GPU’s ability to support a feature are separate checks.
Storage Required capacity and, if stated, drive type or location The relevant figure is free space on the drive where Steam will install the game.
Security or firmware Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, or another explicitly listed condition Check these only when the game or a required component lists them.

How to check your PC specifications in Windows

Windows includes the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, commonly opened with the command dxdiag. Bandai Namco’s Steam support instructions identify its System and Display tabs as useful places to find PC specifications, and Microsoft documents the System tab for identifying the installed DirectX version.

Open DxDiag

  1. Open the Windows Start menu or click the taskbar search box.
  2. Type dxdiag.
  3. Select DirectX Diagnostic Tool. If Windows asks whether it may check whether your drivers are digitally signed, choose the option that lets the tool open; the diagnostic scan itself does not change your hardware.
  4. Wait for the status bar to finish loading, then inspect the tabs described below.

If the search does not find it, press Windows+R, enter dxdiag, and press Enter. On a 64-bit Windows installation, the standard tool normally reports the information needed for a Steam comparison.

Read the System tab

The System tab contains the fields that correspond to several store-page lines:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Operating System: compare the exact Windows version and edition shown here with the game’s OS requirement. Pay attention to 64-bit wording.
  • Processor: record the complete CPU model, not just “Intel” or “AMD.” The model and generation are more useful than a broad brand label.
  • Memory: this is installed system RAM. It answers whether the machine has the listed capacity, but it does not indicate how much will remain available after Windows and background programs are using memory.
  • DirectX Version: note the installed runtime version. This is evidence about the Windows installation; it is not proof that the GPU supports every feature associated with that API.

Microsoft’s DirectX instructions also use DxDiag to check the DirectX version. Use the version shown there only as one part of the graphics comparison.

Read the Display tab or tabs

Select Display (and any additional Display tab if the computer has more than one graphics adapter). Record the name of the GPU, its displayed memory details, and the driver information. Capcom’s troubleshooting guidance specifically asks for the GPU model, VRAM, graphics-driver version, system memory, CPU model, and operating-system version when investigating a Steam game problem.

Laptops often expose integrated and discrete GPUs separately. If two Display tabs appear, identify which adapter the game is expected to use. A comparison against the integrated adapter can look like a failure even when the laptop has a stronger discrete GPU; conversely, a game may launch on the weaker adapter unless Windows or the graphics-driver control panel is configured appropriately.

Do not treat a displayed “Display Memory” number as interchangeable with every VRAM figure in a store listing. Some systems report dedicated video memory and shared system memory separately. Match the terminology used by the game and record the dedicated amount when the listing specifically requires VRAM.

Save a report you can share

Click Save All Information… in DxDiag and save the text file. The report provides a convenient snapshot of the System and Display data, including driver details, when you need to compare several games or contact the publisher’s support team. Remove personal information you do not want to share before posting the report publicly.

Check available storage on the intended install drive

The Steam listing’s storage line refers to space needed for the installation, and sometimes updates or temporary installation files require additional working room. In File Explorer, open the drive or library location where you plan to install the game, right-click the drive, choose Properties, and compare the available-space value with the game’s stated requirement. If you use more than one Steam library, check the specific drive selected under Steam’s install-location prompt rather than checking only the Windows system drive.

The diagnostic guidance for DxDiag does not prescribe a particular Windows screen for storage. The important comparison is the free capacity at the destination when you start the installation, not the total capacity printed on the drive’s label.

Compare your results with minimum and recommended requirements

Compare each category independently, then classify the result for each tier. Minimum and recommended are not interchangeable targets: minimum is the publisher’s entry-level configuration, while recommended describes a higher target intended for a better experience. Capcom notes that falling below minimum can lead to poor frame rates or failure to run; when a PC meets minimum but not recommended specifications, lowering graphics settings may help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison result What it tells you What it does not tell you
Every relevant minimum line is met or exceeded The PC is at or above the publisher’s stated baseline on the listed categories. It does not promise a particular FPS, resolution, loading time, or trouble-free launch.
Minimum is met, recommended is not The game may be usable with conservative resolution, quality, effects, or background-process settings. It does not establish which setting will produce a specific frame rate.
One or more minimum lines are not met There is a documented shortfall, and poor performance or failure to start is more likely. It does not identify the only cause of a problem or prove that a hardware purchase is necessary.
A requirement is not stated There is no published value to compare for that category. You should not invent a threshold or assume that an unstated feature is optional in every situation.

Compare processor models, not just specifications in isolation

When the game names a processor family or model, compare your complete model against that wording. A higher advertised clock speed does not by itself establish that a CPU is equivalent, because architecture, core count, instruction support, and generation can differ. If the listing gives only a broad class, report your exact model and mark the category as an informed comparison rather than claiming a benchmark-equivalent result.

Keep installed RAM separate from available RAM

DxDiag’s memory value is the amount installed. Windows, browsers, launchers, overlays, and security software consume part of it before the game starts. Steam’s hardware troubleshooting page gives 1,000 MB of available RAM as a rule of thumb and says 2,000 MB or more is safer; that is troubleshooting advice, not a universal game-compatibility threshold and not a replacement for the game’s own RAM requirement.

Separate DirectX installation from graphics capability

A PC can have the required DirectX runtime installed while its GPU lacks a feature the game needs. Conversely, a capable GPU can still be affected by an outdated or malfunctioning driver. Compare the game’s exact API or feature wording with the GPU model and driver information from the Display tab, rather than checking only the DirectX Version line.

Check Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 when the game lists them

Most Steam games do not require you to inspect firmware security settings. Perform this check only when the game, an anti-cheat component, or another required part explicitly lists Secure Boot or TPM 2.0.

Use Steam’s client information page

  1. Open the desktop Steam client.
  2. Choose Help in the top menu.
  3. Select System Information.
  4. Search the displayed information for Secure Boot or TPM details and compare them with the game’s requirement.

Steam may show a warning about missing Secure Boot or TPM 2.0 when you view a relevant store page in the desktop client. Steam says this local check is not performed when the page is viewed in a web browser or the mobile app, so the absence of a browser warning is not evidence that the requirement is satisfied.

Check Secure Boot with Windows System Information

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Enter msinfo32 and press Enter.
  3. In System Summary, find Secure Boot State.
  4. Record whether it is On, Off, or unavailable, and compare that exact state with the game’s requirement.

Check TPM specification version

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Enter tpm.msc and press Enter.
  3. In the TPM Management window, inspect the Specification Version.
  4. Confirm that it is the version named by the game, such as TPM 2.0, rather than assuming that any TPM meets the requirement.

Do not change firmware settings solely because a different game does not list them. Secure Boot changes can affect boot configuration, and TPM availability can depend on motherboard firmware and Windows setup; follow the game or publisher’s documented instructions if a security requirement is genuinely blocking launch.

How to describe the result accurately

A useful conclusion names the matching and missing lines instead of reducing the comparison to “yes” or “no.” For example: “The PC exceeds the listed minimum RAM and storage, matches the minimum CPU, but its GPU has less dedicated VRAM than the minimum line. It therefore has a documented graphics shortfall; performance cannot be predicted from the specification comparison alone.” This wording distinguishes an evidence-based mismatch from an unsupported FPS estimate.

Steam cautions that a machine at or near the published requirements can still encounter performance or launch issues. Requirements are not a benchmark result, and they do not account for every combination of resolution, graphics preset, driver version, background workload, game patch, or hardware configuration. Do not promise that a game will run smoothly merely because every line appears to match.

What to do when the PC appears to qualify but the game fails

A requirements match does not diagnose every startup or performance problem. Work through software and configuration causes before assuming that a component upgrade is the answer.

Update or verify the graphics driver

Check the driver version shown on the DxDiag Display tab and install a current driver from the GPU manufacturer when appropriate. Restart Windows after installation and recheck that the game is using the intended adapter, especially on a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics.

Reduce the graphics workload

If the PC meets minimum but not recommended specifications, start with a lower resolution or quality preset and reduce demanding effects. Change one group of settings at a time so that you can identify which adjustment affects stability or frame rate. A lower setting can address a performance limit, but it cannot make an unsupported API feature or missing security requirement appear.

Close competing applications

Browsers, recording tools, overlays, launchers, and other background programs consume memory and CPU time. Close unnecessary applications, then retest. This is particularly relevant when installed RAM meets the listing but little memory remains available during play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the game installation and support notes

Use Steam’s file-verification option when the publisher recommends it, and read the title’s current support notes for known patches, launch options, or anti-cheat requirements. Capcom’s Steam-game troubleshooting guide lists drivers, background applications, graphics settings, game files, and other software or configuration causes among the issues to investigate.

If the problem remains, provide support with the game version, Windows version, CPU and GPU models, VRAM, system memory, driver version, and the DxDiag report. Those details let the publisher distinguish a requirement shortfall from a title-specific defect or configuration issue.

Do not confuse Windows 11 requirements with game requirements

Microsoft lists Windows 11 installation requirements including a compatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, a 64 GB storage device, UEFI and Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, and DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver. These are criteria for installing Windows 11, not evidence that a particular Steam game will run.

Use the game’s own store-page requirements for the compatibility decision. A PC that satisfies Windows 11’s baseline can still fall below a game’s CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, storage, or feature requirement; the reverse comparison is also not a guarantee that Windows itself meets Microsoft’s installation rules. See Microsoft’s current Windows 11 specifications and system requirements for the operating-system criteria.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick pre-purchase checklist

  • Open the exact game’s Steam store page and copy its minimum and recommended requirements.
  • Run dxdiag and record the System-tab OS, CPU, installed RAM, and DirectX version.
  • Record the GPU model, VRAM details, and driver version from every relevant Display tab.
  • Compare the intended Steam install drive’s free space with the listed storage requirement.
  • Check Secure Boot with msinfo32 and TPM with tpm.msc only if the game lists them.
  • Mark each minimum and recommended line as met, below target, or not stated.
  • Report specific shortfalls; do not convert the table into a guaranteed FPS or launch promise.

This process gives you a documented comparison using the game’s current listing and Windows’ own diagnostic information. It is the most reliable way to answer “How do I know if my PC can run a Steam game?” without treating minimum specifications as a performance guarantee.
