Turn on the receiver, open its Setup menu, and select the model’s firmware information or update screen. The installed version is shown there; you do not need to begin an update or buy anything just to read it. Because Onkyo uses different menu labels and version formats across receiver generations, identify the exact model before comparing the number with an update bulletin.

The safest approach is a two-stage check: first document what is installed, then decide whether it is worth changing. Treat the version displayed by the receiver as the only installed-value reference, and treat Onkyo’s dated notes for your exact model as the comparison reference. A download name, an update prompt, or a version copied from a similar receiver is not a substitute.

What you need before checking

The procedure is simple, but the correct model number is essential. Find the complete model designation on the receiver’s front panel, rear label, original documentation, or purchase record. Examples include TX-8050, TX-NR5100, and TX-NR696. A similar-looking model in the same product family can use a different menu path, update method, or version string.

  • The receiver and its remote control, or the front-panel controls described in the receiver’s manual.
  • The exact model number and region, so you can open the matching Onkyo documentation.
  • A way to write down the displayed version. Firmware strings can be long, and one digit or letter can distinguish releases.
  • A connected display when required by the model. Many setup screens are intended for a television or monitor, so select the receiver’s input on that display before opening Setup.
  • Stable power while you inspect the menu. Checking is non-destructive, but avoid making the check while the receiver is already restarting or performing another operation.

Checking the installed version is separate from installing firmware. Do not insert a USB drive, download a file, or start an update unless you have decided that an update is appropriate for your exact model.

How to check the firmware version

  1. Identify the model. Record the complete model number, including any suffix printed on the receiver or its documentation.
  2. Turn on the receiver and display its on-screen menu. Select the receiver’s setup interface with the remote’s SETUP button or the equivalent control listed in the manual.
  3. Open the firmware-related item. Depending on the generation, it may be called Firmware Update, appear under Hardware Setup → Firmware Update, or use another firmware-information label.
  4. Read the installed version. Write down the complete value shown on the receiver. This is the firmware currently installed, not necessarily the newest file available on Onkyo’s website.
  5. Exit without starting an update. If the screen offers an update command, do not select it merely to check the number.
  6. Compare only with documentation for the same model. Open the model’s official manual and firmware history, then compare the complete displayed value with the version listed there.

Onkyo’s TX-8050 instruction manual documents pressing SETUP and selecting 6 Firmware Update. It states that the current firmware version is displayed. In the manual’s advanced-setup description, the Version item is described as: “Displays the current version of the firmware.” That wording is specific to the TX-8050 manual and should not be assumed to appear on every Onkyo receiver.

Why the menu path can differ

Onkyo has used different menu structures and descriptions over several receiver generations. Even documents for the TX-8050 describe the location in two slightly different ways, so forcing a single universal path can lead you to the wrong screen.

Receiver or document Documented route or label What the screen provides
TX-8050 owner’s manual SETUP → 6 Firmware Update The current firmware version is displayed. The manual also describes a Version item in advanced setup.
TX-8050 firmware bulletin Setup → Hardware Setup → Firmware Update The bulletin instructs owners to check a 16-digit number.
TX-NR5100 Use the firmware item documented in the model’s manual and update instructions. The exact route is model-specific; the product documentation page links to both the English manual and firmware information.
TX-NR696 Use the firmware item documented in the model’s manual and update instructions. The update notes cover network and USB procedures, but do not establish a universal route for every receiver generation.

The TX-8050 bulletin is available as Onkyo’s firmware-update document. For newer models, the TX-NR5100 product documentation page is an example of where Onkyo places the model manual and firmware instructions. If your menu does not match an example above, use the manual for your exact receiver rather than selecting a similarly named item at random.

How to record the number without misreading it

Capture the complete value

Some receivers show a short version label; others display a long alphanumeric string. Record every character, including leading zeroes, hyphens, and letter prefixes. A partial value is not enough for a reliable comparison. If the display scrolls, wait for the complete cycle, photograph each segment, or copy the value in groups separated by hyphens.

Distinguish installed firmware from an available update

A screen may show an update notification, a downloadable release, or a prompt to check the network. Those messages do not replace the installed-version field. Read the value explicitly labeled as the current version, version information, or equivalent. If the receiver presents both an installed value and an available value, record them separately so you do not later mistake the offer for a completed installation.

Do not treat one model’s format as universal

The TX-8050 bulletin uses a 16-digit number, but that format is not a standard for every Onkyo receiver. Newer notes use strings such as R142-1219-0290-0034 and R141-1418-1260-0034. The letters, grouping, and length are model-dependent.

Keep a contemporaneous record

Write the model, region, exact string, and check date together. This prevents a long value from being attributed to the wrong receiver when several units are installed in one home. A photograph of the screen can be useful, but confirm that every character is legible before relying on it.

What the displayed version tells you—and what it does not

The value in the receiver’s firmware screen tells you which software revision is installed at the moment you check. It does not, by itself, prove that an update is available, that an update is required, or that a release for another model is compatible. It also does not tell you whether a network or USB procedure is available; those capabilities are documented separately for each model.

  • Installed value: the string shown in the receiver’s firmware or version screen.
  • Update value: the model-specific version identified in an Onkyo update bulletin or history document.
  • Change list: the functions or faults addressed by that release, such as the TX-NR5100 notes’ Chromecast update and specified playback and standby fixes.
  • Method: the route Onkyo permits for that model, which may be network, USB, or USB only.

Keep these four pieces separate. Combining a receiver’s installed string with another model’s change list can produce a false conclusion about what your equipment needs.

How to tell whether your receiver needs an update

  1. Open Onkyo’s support or product-documentation page for the exact model.
  2. Open the current firmware history or update-notes document linked for that model.
  3. Check the publication date and the stated current version.
  4. Compare the complete value from your receiver with the value in that document.
  5. Read the listed changes and model-specific warnings before deciding whether to install anything.

Do not compare a TX-NR5100 value with a TX-NR696 bulletin, or a current receiver value with an old bulletin for another generation. Version strings are not interchangeable, even when the receivers share a similar feature set or chassis design.

A mismatch is not automatically an emergency. It may simply mean that your receiver is on an earlier release, that the bulletin applies to a different region, or that the document is dated. Use the release notes to determine whether the change addresses a problem you are experiencing or a feature you need, and follow Onkyo’s instructions if you proceed.

Model-specific version examples

The following figures are useful illustrations of why the model and date must accompany every firmware number. They are not a universal Onkyo version list.

Model Version stated in the official notes Date and qualification Source
TX-NR5100 R142-1219-0290-0034 Listed as the current version in notes dated 3 March 2026. The notes include a Chromecast update and fixes for specified playback and standby issues. TX-NR5100 current firmware notes
TX-NR696 R141-1418-1260-0034 Listed as the current version in notes dated 10 March 2026. TX-NR696 current firmware notes
TX-8050 1051-1500-0000-0000 Identified as the latest firmware version in a bulletin dated 11 February 2016. This is a historical, model-specific reference, not a current all-model recommendation. TX-8050 firmware bulletin

Dates matter because a later document can supersede an earlier one, while an older receiver may no longer receive releases. Always use the update history attached to your model and region at the time you check. Do not infer that the numerically higher-looking string is newer when the formats differ between models.

Checking is not the same as updating

Reading the version is a non-destructive information check. Installing firmware is a separate operation with its own requirements and risks. If you decide to proceed, follow the instructions for the exact receiver and update package.

The TX-NR5100 and TX-NR696 requirements come from their respective 2026 update notes. The TX-8050 USB-only description comes from its 11 February 2016 bulletin. These examples demonstrate model variation; they do not establish one update method for the entire Onkyo range.

No accessory is needed to display the installed version. A USB flash drive becomes relevant only when your model supports a USB update and you deliberately choose that method. Confirm the capacity, formatting, file placement, and any other conditions in the model’s own instructions rather than relying on a procedure written for a different receiver.

Safe steps if you choose to install firmware

  1. Confirm the model and region again. A file for a different receiver can be incompatible even if its name looks similar.
  2. Read the complete official procedure. Note whether the model supports network updating, USB updating, or only one of those methods.
  3. Meet the documented storage requirement. For the cited TX-NR5100 and TX-NR696 procedures, the USB device must have at least 128 MB of storage. Do not infer that requirement for other models.
  4. Prepare the receiver exactly as instructed. Keep required network connections, input settings, and power conditions in place.
  5. Start the update only when you can leave the receiver undisturbed. Do not unplug the receiver, switch it off, or disconnect required connections during the process.
  6. Wait for the receiver’s completion message. Do not judge progress by a generic time estimate; duration and prompts vary by model.
  7. After completion, check the firmware screen again. Verify that the displayed version now matches the release you intended to install.

The TX-8050 manual specifically warns against unplugging or turning off the receiver during its update process. Apply only the warnings and recovery instructions written for your own model; update procedures and failure handling are not identical across product families.

Troubleshooting when the version is hard to find

The Setup menu has no “Firmware Update” item

Check the complete model number and open its manual. The item may be nested under Hardware Setup, called Version, or documented as a firmware-information screen rather than an update command. Do not assume the menu from a different receiver applies to yours.

The receiver shows an update prompt but no clear version

Leave the prompt without starting installation, then look for a separate current-version or information field. An available download is not proof that it is already installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The displayed number does not match the website

  • Verify that the website page is for the exact model, not a similar TX-NR or TX series receiver.
  • Check the document’s publication date and region.
  • Compare every character, including prefixes, hyphens, and zeroes.
  • Make sure you are comparing the receiver’s installed value with the bulletin’s current-version value, rather than with a file name or change-list number.

The screen is difficult to read

Use the receiver’s on-screen display on a connected television or monitor as described in the manual. If the front-panel display is the only available interface, photograph the complete value or transcribe it in groups so that repeated digits are not lost.

You are considering a USB update but do not have a drive

A USB device is relevant only if your exact model supports USB updating and you choose that method. It is not needed to display the installed firmware version. For the cited TX-NR5100 and TX-NR696 instructions, Onkyo specifies storage of at least 128 MB; confirm the requirement in your model’s own notes before preparing a device.

An update was interrupted

Do not repeatedly power-cycle the receiver or retry a file from another model. Consult the exact model’s official recovery instructions or support channel, and retain the displayed error message and firmware value. The correct recovery procedure depends on the receiver generation.

You cannot find documentation for the exact regional variant

Use the model designation and region printed on the unit or its paperwork when searching Onkyo’s product pages. If two documents appear to describe the same model but use different menu wording, follow the owner’s manual supplied for your unit and the current update page associated with that model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical record to keep

Once you have checked the screen, save a small record with the information that makes a future comparison unambiguous:

  • Complete receiver model and region.
  • Installed firmware string exactly as displayed.
  • Date you checked it.
  • Onkyo update-note date and version used for comparison.
  • Whether the model offers network updating, USB updating, or both.
  • Any warning or error text shown by the receiver.

This record prevents confusion when a long version string changes, when several receivers are present, or when an older bulletin remains available alongside newer documentation. If you contact support, having the exact string and date ready also avoids describing the version from memory.

Quick decision checklist

  • Need only the installed version? Open Setup and the firmware-information screen; stop after recording the value.
  • Unsure which menu to use? Use the manual for the complete model number.
  • Comparing against an update? Use the exact model’s dated firmware notes.
  • Planning a USB installation? Confirm that the model supports USB and follow its stated storage requirement.
  • Starting an installation? Keep power and required connections stable until the receiver reports completion.
  • Comparing several receivers? Keep a separate record for each model; never combine their version strings.

Bottom line

The reliable method is always model-specific: open the receiver’s Setup menu, select its documented firmware or version item, record the complete installed string, and compare it only with the matching Onkyo update history. The TX-8050, TX-NR5100, and TX-NR696 documentation shows why menu labels, version formats, dates, and update methods must not be mixed between models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a USB drive to check my Onkyo receiver’s firmware version?

No. The installed version is displayed in the receiver’s Setup firmware or version screen. USB storage is relevant only if you later choose a supported USB update method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there one firmware-menu path for every Onkyo receiver?

No. The TX-8050 manual uses SETUP → 6 Firmware Update, while another TX-8050 bulletin describes Setup → Hardware Setup → Firmware Update. Use the manual for your exact model and region.

How do I know whether the number on Onkyo’s site applies to my receiver?

Match the complete model designation and region, then compare the full installed string with the dated update notes for that same model. Do not use a number from another TX-NR or TX-series receiver.

What does the TX-8050 firmware number look like?

The 11 February 2016 TX-8050 bulletin identifies 1051-1500-0000-0000 as its latest firmware version at that time and refers to checking a 16-digit number. That format is not universal across Onkyo receivers.

What are the documented USB requirements for the TX-NR5100 and TX-NR696?

Their cited update notes document USB updating and specify storage of at least 128 MB. Confirm the current instructions for your exact model before preparing a device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I start an update just to see the current version?

No. Read the installed value in the firmware-information screen and exit. Starting an update is a separate operation with model-specific requirements and warnings.

What should I do if an update is interrupted?

Do not repeatedly power-cycle the receiver or use a file from another model. Keep the error text and displayed version, then follow the exact model’s official recovery instructions or contact its support channel.

Why does my receiver’s version not match a newer-looking number online?

Check the model, region, document date, prefixes, hyphens, and zeroes. Version formats differ by model, so a longer or numerically different string is not automatically comparable.

The Bottom Line

Open Setup, find the firmware or version item documented for your exact Onkyo model, and copy the complete installed string. Compare it only with that model’s dated Onkyo update notes; checking costs nothing, while updating requires following the model-specific method and safety warnings.
