To check your NAT, first run the network test on the console or application you care about, then check your router’s WAN IPv4 address. The device’s NAT label describes connectivity for that product; the router’s WAN address helps reveal whether translation is happening at home or farther upstream. If your router is behind ISP carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), local port forwarding cannot create a publicly reachable inbound connection.
What NAT does—and what a NAT type tells you
Network Address Translation (NAT) changes IP address information as traffic passes between networks. A common form, Network Address Port Translation (NAPT), also translates TCP or UDP ports, allowing multiple devices on a home network to share one public IPv4 address. Traditional NAT generally permits sessions started from inside the network; incoming connections may need an explicit mapping. RFC 3022 defines these mechanisms.
There is no single universal NAT rating for a router. A console or application may report a type or status based on the connectivity it observes for its own service. For example, Bungie explains PlayStation Type 1, 2, and 3 in its own gaming troubleshooting context; those labels should not be treated as a classification that applies to every application. NAT behavior depends on details such as address mapping, filtering, port assignment, and how mappings are refreshed. The older labels “Full Cone,” “Restricted Cone,” “Port Restricted Cone,” and “Symmetric” do not fully describe real-world behavior and can be confusing, as RFC 4787 explains. Applications may use NAT traversal techniques or relays; the label alone does not tell you which feature or change will solve a specific connection problem.

How to check your NAT and locate the translation layer
- Choose the connection you need to diagnose. Identify the console, game, remote-access tool, or home-hosted service. Use that product’s own network test or connection status, because its NAT result is specific to its connectivity.
- Check the router’s Internet or WAN IPv4 address. Sign in to your router or ISP gateway and look for an Internet, WAN, or connection-status page. Menu labels vary by manufacturer, model, firmware, and provider. Record the WAN IPv4 address.
- Compare it with the public IPv4 address seen externally. Use a reputable address-check service and compare its displayed IPv4 address with the router’s WAN address. A difference can indicate an upstream NAT layer. Address changes, a VPN, or multi-WAN setup can complicate the comparison, so the mismatch is a clue rather than proof by itself.
- Look for another router or gateway in the path. An ISP gateway connected to a second router can create double NAT. A downstream router with a private WAN address is a sign that another routing device is upstream.
- Check for shared CGNAT addressing and confirm with your ISP. The range 100.64.0.0/10 is shared address space associated with carrier-grade NAT; Cisco describes ISPs assigning addresses in this range to subscriber router WAN interfaces. A private WAN address is another clue. Ask your ISP whether your service uses CGNAT and whether a public IPv4 address is available. Cisco’s CGNAT guide
A private or shared WAN address is not itself a console NAT test result. It helps identify where translation may occur, while the application’s test reports the connectivity it sees.
Choose the next step based on what you find
| What you find | What it suggests | Reasonable next step |
|---|---|---|
| The application reports a connectivity problem; the router has a public WAN IPv4 address; there is one router | The issue may be specific to the application, platform, or router configuration rather than an upstream NAT layer. | Follow the current networking instructions for that exact application. Use UPnP or a specific port-forward rule only when the application’s or router’s documentation recommends it. |
| Two routers or gateways are routing traffic | There may be double NAT between your device and the internet. | Check whether one user-controlled router can use bridge or access-point mode, or whether the ISP gateway supports a documented pass-through mode. Follow the equipment and provider instructions. |
| The router’s WAN IPv4 address is private or in 100.64.0.0/10 | An upstream gateway or ISP-side CGNAT may be translating traffic. | Ask the ISP to confirm the arrangement and whether it can provide public IPv4 or another supported option. |
UPnP or a carefully configured port-forward rule can help some applications, but neither is a universal fix. Requirements differ across products, so use their current instructions rather than copying a generic port list. Bungie’s troubleshooting guidance and TP-Link’s port-forwarding FAQ describe product-specific considerations.

Why port forwarding may not work
A port-forward rule on your subscriber router only controls traffic that reaches that router. TP-Link’s guidance states that internet port forwarding requires a public WAN IP address. If your router’s WAN address is behind an ISP-side CGNAT layer, the ISP controls that upstream translation; a rule on your own router cannot make the upstream address publicly reachable. Ask the ISP whether a public IPv4 address or another supported solution is available. TP-Link’s port-forwarding FAQ

Double NAT is a different situation: if you control both routers, the equipment documentation may offer a supported bridge, access-point, or pass-through configuration. Do not disable firewall or routing features blindly. Broadly exposing a device through a DMZ setting is not a safe default remedy.

Make changes safely and verify the result
- Consult the current instructions for the exact console, game, or service and your router model.
- If a port-forward rule is specifically required, follow the router’s instructions and reserve a stable local address for the target device if the setup calls for it.
- Change one setting at a time, then rerun the same application’s network test. This makes it easier to identify whether the change affected the problem.
- If the router’s WAN address is private or shared, contact the ISP before repeatedly changing local forwarding rules; the upstream network may be the limiting factor.
Menu names, firmware behavior, platform labels, and ISP policies vary and can change. A reported “open” status is not automatically the best choice for every application or security situation; use the status and configuration recommended for the connection you are trying to fix.
