Check a green card case through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) using the receipt number on the agency’s notice. For timing, match the form, category, office and receipt date from that notice to the current USCIS processing-times tool. Its estimate describes how long it took USCIS to complete most comparable cases; it is not a promised decision date for your case. A separate inquiry date indicates when the tool may let you ask about a delay, not when a decision or approval is due.
How to check your green card case status
USCIS Case Status Online is the direct way to look up a case using its receipt number. USCIS online accounts can also display case status and history, and offer features such as automatic alerts, processing-time information, evidence uploads, address updates and secure messages. Which features apply can depend on the case and the account.
For a quick check, go to the USCIS case-status tool and enter the receipt number printed on the notice for the filing you want to follow. For ongoing monitoring, sign in to a USCIS online account and review the case’s available status and history information. These are two ways to consult USCIS about the same case; an account may offer additional tools, but it does not turn a status update into a promised decision date.
Use the receipt number from your notice
- Find the USCIS receipt notice for the application or petition you want to track. Use the receipt number printed on that notice, rather than a tracking number for mail or a different identifier.
- Enter the 13-character receipt number in Case Status Online. USCIS describes the format as three letters followed by ten numbers. Enter it without dashes.
- Review the status and any associated update. If USCIS says it issued a notice or mailed a card, use the relevant missing-mail steps below rather than treating the case as though there has been no update.
The receipt number is the key for a status lookup, but it is not the same thing as the case’s form type, category, receipt date or office information. Those other details matter when you look up processing times. Keep the receipt notice available so you can refer to the correct information instead of trying to infer it from a status result or from a different filing.

Each receipt number refers to a particular filing. If a family’s applications have separate receipt notices, check each number individually; do not assume one case’s status or timing applies to another. One family member’s update cannot establish the status of another person’s receipt number, and a processing-time result for one filing should not be substituted for a different form or category.
Use an online account for ongoing tracking
An account can be useful when you want more than a one-time status lookup. USCIS identifies case history and automatic alerts among its account features, alongside processing-time information, evidence uploads, address updates and secure messages. Check the account for the case-specific options that are actually available to you. An alert or a status entry is an update, not necessarily a final decision.
Think of the account as a place to follow the information USCIS makes available for your case, not as a separate timing authority. If the question is “What is the latest status for this receipt number?”, check the status or account history. If the question is “How long have comparable cases taken?” or “Can I ask USCIS about a delay?”, use the processing-times tool and its inquiry option. The tools answer related but different questions.

Use the details on the receipt notice, because a processing-time result is meaningful only when you choose the relevant filing and office information. The USCIS tool organizes results by form type and category, and the applicable entry also depends on the receipt date and office information. A broad search for “green card processing time” is not a substitute for selecting the matching row.
- Form type: Select the form identified on the receipt notice. Different forms involved in an immigration process can have different processing-time entries.
- Category: Choose the category that corresponds to the filing and the options shown by the current tool. Do not substitute a category just because another one sounds similar.
- Office: Compare the office information on the notice with the office or category choices currently offered by the tool.
- Receipt date: Use the receipt date associated with the case. It is needed to understand how much time has elapsed and whether the tool indicates an inquiry point.
Work through those fields in order rather than choosing the first result that appears to mention a green card. First identify the exact filing, then choose the corresponding category and current office option. After you have the right row, use the receipt date when the tool asks for it or when assessing elapsed time. A result from a different category may look relevant while still describing a different group of cases.
USCIS says some service-center cases are listed under “Service Center Operations (SCOPS)” because casework may be handled at multiple locations. The office label shown in a tool should therefore be treated as the current selection for that result, not as a fixed prediction of the physical location where every step of the case will occur. If the old label on a notice does not appear as a current tool option, follow the live tool’s available categories rather than guessing from the old label.
This is why the office comparison is not simply a search for an exact match to a label printed on an older notice. USCIS may present a current office or category choice that differs from the service-center label a reader expected. Use the current choices for the matching form and category, and do not assume that selecting SCOPS identifies one physical location or predicts where all casework will happen. If the tool’s available options change, reassess the result using the current tool rather than carrying forward a selection from an old lookup.

What a USCIS processing-time estimate means
The displayed figure is a historical measure of completed cases, not a forecast tailored to your filing. USCIS defines its measure this way: “The processing time displayed on the USCIS website is the amount of time it took us to complete 80% of adjudicated cases over the last six months.” The agency also says processing-time information is “provided as a reference point for how long we have taken to complete most cases.” USCIS says the processing-time page is updated monthly.
In practical terms, the estimate summarizes a group of cases that USCIS has already adjudicated. Your application may take less or more time. The estimate does not guarantee that USCIS will decide your case by a certain date, and it does not say whether the decision will be an approval. Since the figure and available office categories can change, use the live USCIS tool for the matching form, category, office and receipt date rather than relying on a number copied from an older page or message.
The 80% figure is a description of the historical group, not an assurance about the remaining cases or about your individual file. It also does not mean that a case reaching the displayed time is automatically late under a USCIS rule. The estimate and the inquiry option have different purposes: one describes a past completion pattern, while the other tells you whether the tool currently provides a way to ask about your pending case.
Because USCIS updates this information monthly, a processing-time result you saw earlier can differ from the current result. If you are checking again after time has passed, make a fresh selection for the same form and category and compare the current office options. Do not rely on a saved screenshot, an old message, or another applicant’s figure as though it were a current measurement for your receipt number.

USCIS uses a different calculation to determine when a case may be eligible for an inquiry. The inquiry-date calculation uses the time to complete 93% of adjudicated cases and subtracts the time already elapsed since the receipt date. The tool may show an estimated date to ask about the case or provide a link to submit a question. Revisit it when needed: USCIS processing times and inquiry dates can change.
The 93% figure belongs to the inquiry calculation, not to the displayed 80% processing-time measure. The inquiry calculation also takes account of how long your own case has been pending from its receipt date. That is why the inquiry result is not interchangeable with the processing estimate, and why using the correct receipt date is important when checking whether the tool makes an inquiry available.
| Information shown | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Processing-time estimate | A historical reference based on the time USCIS took to complete 80% of adjudicated cases over the previous six months. | A guaranteed decision date or a case-specific prediction. |
| Inquiry date or inquiry link | When USCIS’s tool may allow you to ask about a case, based on its separate 93% calculation and time elapsed since receipt. | A promise that USCIS will decide or approve the case on that date. |
| Case status or history | The status information USCIS currently provides for that receipt number, with history available through an online account. | By itself, a prediction of the final outcome or a replacement for a notice USCIS says it mailed. |
When can you submit a case inquiry?
Start with the inquiry option in the USCIS processing-time tool for the matching form and category. Use the receipt date to assess the elapsed time; the tool’s current result, not an old estimate or a general rule of thumb, determines whether it offers an inquiry date or submission route for that entry. USCIS’s methodology subtracts elapsed time from the time associated with completing 93% of adjudicated cases.

If your form type is not listed in the processing-time tool, USCIS’s processing FAQ gives more than six months pending as the default period before an inquiry. That is an inquiry threshold, not a promise that USCIS will make a decision within six months. The distinction matters: a case can remain pending after the period at which a question becomes available.

- Check that the office selection corresponds to the current options in the tool, taking account of a possible SCOPS listing.
- Enter or compare the receipt date as directed by the tool.
- If the tool says the case is outside normal processing time or offers an estimated inquiry date or question link, follow that current route. If it does not offer an inquiry, check again later because timing information can change.
Submitting an inquiry asks USCIS about a pending case; it does not change the underlying processing estimate into a deadline or establish what the eventual decision will be.
Keep the result you are acting on tied to the correct receipt number and filing. If a family has several pending matters, one case’s inquiry eligibility does not mean the others are eligible too. Check each form and category separately, and use the receipt date for that particular case. If a tool presents a date when you may ask, treat it as a point to check the inquiry route—not as a date when USCIS has promised to answer the case or issue a decision.
Why a case may appear to be taking longer
A processing-time figure is based on previously adjudicated cases, while your status page reflects the updates available for your individual receipt number. Those are different kinds of information, so a case can remain pending even when the historical estimate looks shorter than the time you have waited. The relevant next check is the current inquiry result for the correct form, category, office and receipt date—not an assumption that the estimate is a maximum wait.
Also verify that you are comparing like with like. Choosing a different form or category, using the wrong receipt date, or relying only on an older service-center label can lead to an irrelevant processing-time row. USCIS’s monthly updates and its use of SCOPS for some cases are reasons to recheck the live tool when a previous result no longer matches its current choices.
A long wait by itself does not tell you what the outcome will be. The historical estimate is not an individual forecast, and the available status information is not a substitute for a case-specific inquiry when USCIS’s tool offers one. Check the latest status for the receipt number, then consult the timing and inquiry information using the case’s correct details. If the tool does not yet offer an inquiry, revisit it later because processing information can change.
What to do if a USCIS notice or green card did not arrive
First distinguish a missing notice from a card that USCIS says it mailed. The status entry and the type of item matter because USCIS provides different guidance for those situations.

A notice may have been issued
If you believe USCIS issued a notice but you did not receive it, first check Case Status Online for the case update. USCIS directs applicants to check the status before pursuing a missing-notice issue. Use the case’s receipt number, and make sure you are checking the filing associated with the notice you expect.
Do not assume that a missing piece of mail means USCIS has not acted. First see whether the status indicates that a notice was issued, and make sure you are looking at the correct filing. This helps distinguish a mail problem from a case for which no such update appears. Follow the USCIS missing-notice guidance for the situation shown rather than using the delivery instructions for a card.

A card is marked as mailed
If the status says a card was mailed, check the case status for the mailing update and use the USPS tracking number when one is available. USCIS provides an e-Request route for certain undelivered cards. The availability of that route is limited to qualifying situations; use the instructions in the relevant USCIS tool rather than assuming every delayed or missing card can be handled the same way.
When following up on a mailed card, keep the status and delivery information together: the case-status update tells you that USCIS marked the card as mailed, and the USPS tracking number, when available, helps you check the delivery information. If the card has not arrived, consult the USCIS e-Request path for undelivered cards and follow its eligibility instructions. Do not treat e-Request as a universal option for every mail delay.
A mailed-card problem is a delivery issue, not necessarily evidence that the underlying case has no update. Follow the tracking and undelivered-card guidance that matches the status shown.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to avoid common status and timing mistakes
- Do not treat the processing-time figure as your personal deadline. It reports historical completion data for most cases in a defined group, not a commitment about one application.
- Do not confuse inquiry eligibility with a decision date. The inquiry point may let you ask a question; it does not predict approval or adjudication on that date.
- Do not choose a row solely from an old service-center label. Check the office/category options USCIS currently presents; some cases appear under SCOPS.
- Do not treat every missing item alike. Check status first for a possibly issued notice; for a mailed card, check the status and available tracking and use e-Request only where USCIS provides it for that case.
- Do not use a relative’s or family member’s result as your timing estimate. Match the specific receipt number, filing form and category for each case.
A useful check is to ask what kind of information you are looking at before drawing a conclusion. A status update is tied to one receipt number; a processing-time result summarizes completed cases in a selected group; an inquiry date concerns whether USCIS’s tool may let you ask about a pending case; and a mailed-card tracking number concerns delivery. Mixing those signals can make an update seem more definitive than it is.
When routine tracking is not enough
USCIS’s status, processing-time, account and case-inquiry tools address case tracking and process questions. They are not individualized legal advice. If you need advice about what an immigration decision means, what filing strategy to use, or how the law applies to your circumstances, USCIS directs people to an authorized immigration legal service provider. Keep that separate from using the agency’s free tools to check status or ask about a pending case.

For ordinary status checks, begin with USCIS’s official Case Status Online, online account and processing-time tools. For a question about whether your circumstances call for legal advice, use an authorized service provider rather than treating a status page or a general timing estimate as individualized guidance. USCIS guidance describes process information; it does not determine how the law applies to a particular person.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check my green card case status?
Use USCIS Case Status Online and enter the 13-character receipt number from the USCIS receipt notice, without dashes. It consists of three letters followed by ten numbers. You can also check status and case history through a USCIS online account, with additional features available depending on the case.
Where can I find my receipt number?
Find it on the USCIS receipt notice for the specific application or petition you want to track. Do not use a USPS tracking number or a receipt number from a different filing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy is my case taking so long?
The processing-time figure is a historical reference based on cases USCIS completed, not a maximum wait or a prediction for your individual case. Check that you selected the correct form, category, current office option and receipt date, then use the live inquiry option to see whether USCIS currently permits a question about the pending case.
When can I submit a service request or case inquiry?
Use the inquiry date or submission link in the current USCIS processing-time tool for the correct form and category. USCIS calculates this separately from the processing estimate, using the time to complete 93% of adjudicated cases and subtracting elapsed time since receipt. If the form type is not listed, USCIS’s FAQ gives more than six months pending as the default period before an inquiry; that is not a promise of a decision within six months.
Does the processing-time estimate tell me when USCIS will decide my case?
No. USCIS says the displayed time reflects how long it took to complete 80% of adjudicated cases over the previous six months and provides a general reference. It is not a guaranteed date, an individual prediction or an indication of whether the case will be approved.
What if I did not receive a USCIS notice or green card?
For a notice that may have been issued, first check Case Status Online. If the status says a card was mailed, check for the USPS tracking number when available and use USCIS’s e-Request route for an undelivered card only if your situation qualifies.
What does SCOPS mean in the processing-time tool?
USCIS uses “Service Center Operations (SCOPS)” for some service-center cases because casework may be handled at multiple locations. Use the current office or category choices in the tool rather than assuming an older service-center label predicts the physical location where every step will occur.
The Bottom Line
Use the receipt number on the USCIS notice to check the case, and match the form, category, office and receipt date in the current processing-time tool. The 80% processing figure is historical context, not a promised decision date; the separate inquiry date only indicates when USCIS may let you ask a question. For missing mail, check status first and follow the instructions specific to a notice or a mailed card.
