Check your Diversity Visa (DV) entry yourself at the U.S. Department of State’s official Entrant Status Check (ESC): dvprogram.state.gov. You need the confirmation number saved after registration. For DV-2026, the Department said ESC was the only official way it notified entrants of selection; it did not mail selection letters or email successful entrants. An email or letter claiming that you won is therefore not an official selection notice.
Where do I check my DV lottery results?
Use the Department of State’s Entrant Status Check at dvprogram.state.gov. Enter the site address yourself rather than following a link in an unexpected email, text message or social-media post. The Department identifies government websites ending in .gov as official sources for Diversity Visa information.
There is no legitimate competing provider for checking selection. A lawyer, travel agent, document service or website cannot see a result before you do, and no private organization is authorized to notify you that you were selected or to tell you the official next steps.
How to check your Diversity Visa lottery status
- Open the official site. Type
dvprogram.state.govinto your browser’s address bar. Check the domain carefully; a site that merely uses government-looking graphics, a copied logo or the words “DV lottery” is not necessarily official. - Open Entrant Status Check. Choose the status-check option for the program year in which you entered. The available program year and screen wording can change, so read the page’s current instructions.
- Enter your confirmation number. Use the confirmation number you received after submitting the online entry. For DV-2026, the Department described that number as necessary to find out whether the entry was selected. Enter the characters exactly as shown in your saved record.
- Complete the requested verification. The page may ask for additional identifying details or a security check. Provide information only on the official
.govpage you opened directly. - Read and save the result. The result page will state whether the entry was selected and, if applicable, provide instructions for continuing. Save a private copy or print the page for your records, but do not post your confirmation number or result publicly.
Selection means the entrant may continue in the Diversity Visa process. It does not mean a visa has been issued or that a visa is guaranteed. Use the Department’s wording—“selected for further processing”—rather than saying that you have already won a visa.

What the result screen means
If the entry is selected
Follow every instruction displayed in ESC and any linked official Department guidance. Selection only permits the next stage of processing. The entrant must still meet the program’s eligibility requirements, complete the required steps and remain subject to visa availability and consular processing. Do not pay a person who promises to turn selection into a guaranteed visa.
If the entry is not selected
A non-selection message applies to that entry for that program year. Do not let a caller or website “recheck” it for a fee. No service can change an official ESC result.
If the page will not load or the number is rejected
- Re-enter the address manually and confirm that the browser shows the exact
dvprogram.state.govdomain. - Check that you selected the correct program year and copied the confirmation number without adding spaces.
- Try again later if the official site is busy, and keep a record of the error message.
- Do not send the confirmation number, passport details or identity documents to an unsolicited helper.
Do they email you if you are selected?
No official selection email or letter should be expected. For DV-2026, the Department of State said Entrant Status Check was the only method it used to notify entrants of selection. It would not mail selection letters or email successful entrants.
The Department’s fraud warning makes an important distinction: an email from the U.S. government may remind an applicant to check status online through DV Entrant Status Check, but it will not be a notification letter or email saying that the applicant is a successful DV entrant. A reminder is not proof of selection; open the official site yourself and check.

How to recognize a DV lottery scam
A payment request to enter or check results
The Department says there is no fee to submit an online Diversity Visa entry. A Diversity Visa processing fee is charged later, when a selected entrant applies for the visa. That timing matters. A request for money to submit the entry, check whether you were selected, release a result, or obtain a “guaranteed win” is a serious scam signal.

The amount of any legitimate later processing fee can change and depends on the official application stage. Do not treat a payment request from an email, messaging account or private website as an official fee notice. Confirm the stage and payment instructions through current Department information reached from a government .gov site.
A look-alike website
Scammers can copy government colors, seals and wording. The Department says official program information is on U.S. government websites ending in .gov. A domain ending in .com, .org, a country-code suffix or a misspelled version of the government address is not the official ESC.

Even a message that includes the correct-looking domain can be deceptive if its clickable link goes somewhere else. On a computer, inspect the destination before clicking; safer still, type dvprogram.state.gov yourself.
A demand for unnecessary personal information
An unsolicited contact may ask for your confirmation number, passport scan, birth date, address, bank details or a login password. The official process requires the confirmation number for ESC, but you do not need to give that number to a stranger who says it can “retrieve” or “activate” your result. Never send identity documents or payment details in response to an unverified selection message.
Pressure and guaranteed language
“Pay today,” “limited time,” “your visa is guaranteed” and “we can move you ahead of other winners” are common pressure patterns. Selection itself is not a visa guarantee, so no private party can honestly promise the final outcome.

Impersonation of an authorized organization
The Department states that no private organization is authorized to notify applicants that they were selected or tell them the official next steps. A person who claims to be an exclusive representative, official agent or required intermediary is not made legitimate by a title, logo or phone number.
Official versus unofficial status-check channels
| Check | Official ESC | Unofficial contact or site |
|---|---|---|
| Domain | Government .gov, including dvprogram.state.gov |
Any other domain or a disguised redirect |
| How selection is communicated | Result appears after you sign in to ESC with your confirmation number | Unsolicited email, letter, call, text or social-media message announces a win |
| Payment to check | No fee to check the result | Demands money to reveal, unlock or verify status |
| Authority | U.S. Department of State system | Private organization or individual claiming special access |
| Information handling | Entered on the official status page | Requests confirmation numbers, documents or financial data by message |
What to do if a message says you won
- Do not reply. Replying confirms that your address or phone number is active and can invite more fraud.
- Do not click its links or open attachments. They may lead to a look-alike login page or malware.
- Do not pay. A fee to check status or a promise of a guaranteed visa is not part of the official selection notification.
- Open ESC independently. Type
dvprogram.state.gov, enter your saved confirmation number and rely on the result shown there. - Preserve evidence. Keep the message, sender address, payment request and web address if you need to explain the attempted fraud to your bank, email provider or relevant authorities.
- Secure any exposed accounts. If you entered a password or financial information on a suspicious page, change the affected password from the real service, enable available multi-factor protection and contact your financial institution promptly.
What if you lost your confirmation number?
The confirmation number is the key information used to find an entry in ESC. Start with the records you created when you submitted the entry: a downloaded confirmation page, printed copy, screenshot, password-manager note or secure email record.
If the official site offers a recovery process for that program year, use only that process on the official site. Recovery-screen fields and availability can change, and the cited Department guidance does not establish a permanent set of recovery questions. Do not hire someone who says it can retrieve the number, and do not send the number or other personal information to an unsolicited contact.
If you cannot recover it through the current official process, avoid websites that promise a result without it. A claim that a private service has a separate database or special connection is a scam warning.
Program-year dates: do not assume the same schedule every year
DV-2026 historical window
The official DV-2026 instructions said Entrant Status Check would be available from May 3, 2025, through at least September 30, 2026. That is a cycle-specific window, not a promise that every future program will use those dates.

DV-2027 announcement
In an announcement dated November 5, 2025, the Department said it would announce the DV-2027 registration start date and the date results could become available through ESC later. It stated that the DV-2027 visa application period would remain October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027. Because a later update may change when registration or results open, check the newest Department announcement before telling anyone that a period is open or closed.
Do not infer a status date from a social-media calendar, an old blog post or the previous program year. The program year printed on the ESC page and the Department’s current announcement control.
Selection is not the same as receiving a Diversity Visa
The program makes a limited number of immigrant visas available—up to 55,000 each year according to the Department’s Kentucky Consular Center information. “Up to” describes annual program availability; it is not a promise that every selected entrant will receive a visa.
A selected entry still has to proceed through the official process, satisfy eligibility requirements and remain within the available visa supply and applicable deadlines. Treat the ESC notice as permission to continue, not as a completed immigration decision. Avoid quitting a job, selling property or paying a third party on the assumption that selection guarantees issuance.

Official corrections and unusual result notices
Check current official notices if the Department tells a particular group to review its status again. On October 3, 2025, the Department reported possible selection-status errors affecting a small number of DV-2026 entrants associated with Cuba and Great Britain and dependent areas, and asked specified entrants to recheck ESC. That notice supports following a correction instruction that applies to your program year and circumstances; it does not mean that DV results are commonly wrong.

How to keep your own records safe
- Store the confirmation number offline or in a reputable password manager; keep a backup in a separate secure location.
- Save the program year next to the number so you do not use it on the wrong status page.
- Do not publish a screenshot containing the confirmation number, barcode or personal details.
- Bookmark the official domain only after verifying it, and still check the address bar whenever you open the page.
- Use a device and network you trust, especially when entering identity or payment information during later official processing.
- Tell family members that an unexpected “congratulations” message is not proof of selection; this prevents well-meaning relatives from paying a scammer.
Common questions, answered precisely
How do I check my Diversity Visa lottery status?
Go to dvprogram.state.gov, open Entrant Status Check for the correct program year and enter the confirmation number saved after your entry.
Is a Diversity Visa winning email a scam?
An email that says you were selected is not an official selection notice. A government reminder to check ESC may be legitimate, but verify every result yourself on the official site.

No. The online entry is free, and checking the result through ESC is not a paid service. A Diversity Visa processing fee belongs to the later stage when a selected entrant applies for the visa.
Can a lawyer or agency check the result for me?
No private organization is authorized to notify you of selection or replace ESC. You may seek professional advice for a later immigration question, but verify the selection result yourself.
What should I do after seeing a selection message?
Save the official ESC result, read its instructions and continue only through current Department guidance. Remember that selection permits further processing and does not guarantee a visa.
