You can use an at-home blood-type kit to screen for your ABO and RhD group, but treat the result as preliminary. Do not use a home reading to choose blood for transfusion or to make decisions about pregnancy care, surgery, emergency treatment, or other high-stakes care. Confirm your type with a clinical laboratory, hospital blood bank, or blood-donation service and keep that documented result.
A reliable confirmation uses controlled testing and, when transfusion safety is involved, a separately collected second specimen or a previously verified record. If a home result disagrees with a medical record or laboratory result, tell the clinician; do not try to resolve the discrepancy yourself.
What a blood type result actually tells you
Blood type describes antigens on the surface of red blood cells and antibodies in plasma. The two systems reported for routine transfusion purposes are ABO and RhD.
ABO groups
The ABO system has four main groups:
- Group A: red cells carry A antigen; plasma normally contains anti-B antibodies.
- Group B: red cells carry B antigen; plasma normally contains anti-A antibodies.
- Group AB: red cells carry both A and B antigens.
- Group O: red cells carry neither A nor B antigen.
RhD status
RhD is usually reported as positive or negative. A person whose red cells have the D antigen is RhD positive; someone without it is RhD negative. Combining ABO and RhD produces eight common labels:

The NHS reported in 2017 that about 85% of the UK population was RhD positive and around 48% had group O. Those are population figures, not estimates of home-kit accuracy and not a prediction of your individual type.
The safety boundary for home testing
A home kit is a screening aid. It may help you learn what your type appears to be, but it does not replace a laboratory record. Home collection, reagent storage, timing, and visual interpretation can all introduce errors. A weak, mixed, absent, or difficult-to-read reaction is not a result to guess.
FDA guidance describes home-use tests as tools intended to help with health care, not substitutes for periodic medical visits. A home blood-type result therefore belongs in the same category as information to discuss with a qualified professional, rather than proof to use independently.

For transfusion, pregnancy-related care, surgery, or an urgent treatment decision, tell the treating team that you have an unconfirmed home result and let the facility perform its own testing. Never select or accept blood solely because a home card appears to show a compatible group.
What you need before opening a home blood-type kit
Choose a new, in-date kit from a legitimate source and read its complete instructions before collecting a sample. The exact card layout, reagent names, timing, and interpretation rules differ between products, so a procedure copied from another kit may be wrong for yours.
Prepare the work area
- Use a clean, well-lit, stable surface where the reaction card will not be disturbed while it develops.
- Wash and dry your hands. Follow any additional skin-cleaning direction printed by the manufacturer.
- Check that the package is sealed, the reagents are within their stated expiry date, and any required control or buffer is present.
- Have a puncture-resistant sharps container ready before using the lancet. Do not leave a used lancet on the table or put it loose into household waste.
Use only the supplied sterile equipment
Use the sterile lancet supplied with the kit once, for one person. Do not reuse it or share it. Do not substitute a household needle or another person’s device. Dispose of the used lancet immediately in a puncture-resistant container and follow local disposal rules.

Step-by-step: using a home kit as a preliminary screen
- Read the product label completely. Identify the spots or wells for anti-A, anti-B, and anti-D reagents, any control area, the required sample amount, and the exact reading time. Some kits use a card; others use a different format. Use the instructions for your product, not a generic timing remembered from elsewhere.
- Check the kit and reagents. Do not use a damaged, leaking, expired, or improperly stored product. If the label says a reagent must be at a particular temperature or mixed before use, complete that step exactly as directed.
- Wash your hands and prepare the finger as labeled. Keep the card, lancet, and reagents within reach so you do not have to touch other objects during collection.
- Open the sterile lancet only when ready. Use it once and only as the instructions describe. If the device fails to activate or is dropped, discard it and use a new sterile lancet rather than improvising.
- Collect the blood sample according to the kit directions. Put the specified amount into each designated reaction area. Avoid transferring material between spots, because cross-contamination can create an apparent reaction that does not represent your blood type.
- Add reagents in the stated order and amount. Use only the bottles or droppers supplied. Do not add water, another kit’s reagent, or extra blood to make a weak reaction look stronger.
- Mix and wait for the labeled interval. Start timing when the instructions say to start. Reading too early or too late can change the appearance of clumping. Keep the card level and undisturbed during development.
- Read every reaction and any control. Compare each area with the manufacturer’s examples under good lighting. Record what you see rather than relying on memory. If a required control fails, the test is invalid regardless of the apparent ABO pattern.
- Photograph the card only as a record. A photo can help a clinician see what you saw, but it does not turn a home screen into a laboratory report. Keep the image private because it is health information.
- Dispose of sharps and clean the area. Place the used lancet in a puncture-resistant container, close reagent bottles, and discard other materials according to the product label and local rules.
If the reaction is weak, mixed, absent where a reaction is expected, smeared, or hard to distinguish from background, do not infer a type. Repeat only if the manufacturer permits a repeat and provides new materials; otherwise arrange laboratory testing.
How to read A, B, AB, O and RhD reactions
Most kits use reagents that correspond to the antigens being sought. In general, visible clumping with anti-A suggests A antigen, clumping with anti-B suggests B antigen, and clumping with anti-D suggests RhD (positive) status. The final label comes from the complete pattern, not from one spot.

This table explains the usual logic of anti-sera reactions; it does not override the kit’s own diagram or control requirements. Some products may present reactions differently, and a result that is not clearly one of the labeled patterns should be treated as unresolved.
How dependable are home blood-type kits?
No official source identified for this article publishes a consumer home blood-type-kit accuracy percentage or identifies a specific authorized kit sold through a major online marketplace. That means a precise number such as “99% accurate” cannot be responsibly assigned to the category from the available evidence.

- Reagent condition: expiration, incorrect storage, leakage, or use of a bottle that has been contaminated.
- Timing: reading before the required development period or after the stated window.
- Visual interpretation: mistaking drying, streaks, or a fine grainy appearance for true agglutination.
- Product limitations: a kit may be designed as a screening test and may not detect uncommon or clinically significant patterns that require laboratory investigation.
A laboratory does not simply rely on a consumer card. It works with controlled reagents, documented specimen identification, and procedures for investigating discrepancies.

How a laboratory confirms ABO and RhD
Forward typing
In forward typing, the laboratory combines your red blood cells with anti-A, anti-B, and anti-D reagents. Clumping indicates that the corresponding antigen is present on the red cells. This is the laboratory version of the reaction pattern a home screen is attempting to show.
Reverse typing
In reverse typing, the laboratory mixes your plasma or serum with reagent group A and group B red cells. The expected antibodies in your plasma should react in a pattern that agrees with the forward result.
Resolving a discrepancy
HRSA/OPTN states that the forward and reverse blood-type results should be consistent before a final type is reported. If they do not agree, the laboratory investigates rather than choosing the result that looks most likely. Investigation can include repeating appropriate testing, checking specimen identity and labeling, and examining the clinical context.
The FDA classifies blood-grouping reagents as in-vitro reagents used to detect ABO and Rh antigens on red blood cells. Their use in a controlled laboratory process is why a documented clinical result is different from an at-home visual screen.
Where to get a documented confirmation
Ask for ABO/Rh typing from one of these services:
- Clinical laboratory: A laboratory can collect a blood specimen, perform the required testing, and provide a report for your medical record.
- Hospital blood bank or transfusion service: This is the appropriate route when testing is connected to an upcoming procedure, admission, transfusion, or urgent care.
- Blood-donation service: Donor testing may determine your ABO/Rh group. Ask whether and how the result is reported to you, and whether the service is available in your country and region.
Before booking, ask whether the service performs ABO and RhD typing, what identification is required, how results are delivered, and whether the report can be added to your health record. Prices and turnaround times vary by provider and geography; official sources cited here do not establish a universal fee or turnaround promise.
Why transfusion services may require a second specimen
For transfusion safety, FDA guidance says the recipient’s ABO/Rh(D) should be determined and that a second confirming test or a prior verified record should be available. A separately drawn second specimen is preferred because wrong-blood-in-tube and patient-identification errors are major sources of ABO mistakes.

This requirement is about protecting you from an identification error, not about distrusting a properly performed laboratory method. A result from a home card, an old unverified note, or a statement remembered from a relative is not a substitute for the facility’s identification and confirmation process.
What to do if results conflict
- Pause decisions based on the home result. Keep the card or a photograph if it may help explain what happened, but do not use it to select blood or alter prescribed care.
- Tell the clinician or laboratory exactly what you have. State the home result, the date, the kit information if available, and any previous laboratory or donor result.
- Let the laboratory investigate. Staff may repeat forward and reverse typing, check the specimen label and patient identity, and obtain a separately collected specimen.
- Use the verified result going forward. Ask how the final type will be documented in your record and what to do if another source later shows a different type.
Do not try to reconcile a discrepancy by averaging two results, choosing the result that matches a family member, or repeating multiple home cards until one agrees with your expectation.

Common mistakes and the safest correction
The card shows a faint or mixed reaction
Do not call a faint line positive or negative by intuition. Check whether the reaction is within the manufacturer’s reading window and whether the control passed. If it remains unclear, stop and arrange laboratory testing.
The kit is expired or was stored incorrectly
Discard it and obtain a new, in-date product if you still want a preliminary screen. An old or damaged reagent cannot be made reliable by repeating the same card.
You used the wrong amount of blood or crossed the spots
Consider that run invalid. Do not infer your type from the most prominent spot. Repeat only with new materials and according to the label, or go directly to a laboratory.

Tell the clinician that the result came from an undocumented home screen. Without the kit instructions, expiry information, and reading time, the card is especially difficult to evaluate.

You need an answer for an appointment tomorrow
Contact the clinic, laboratory, or hospital blood bank and ask what test and identification they require. A last-minute home card may be convenient, but it will not necessarily satisfy the facility’s confirmation policy.
A practical decision checklist
- Curiosity or personal record: A home kit can provide a preliminary indication, followed by a non-urgent laboratory or donor-service confirmation.
- Upcoming surgery, pregnancy care, planned transfusion, or major treatment: Ask the responsible clinical service to perform or arrange documented ABO/Rh typing.
- Emergency symptoms or an active medical emergency: Seek emergency care and report that your blood type is unknown or unconfirmed. Do not delay treatment to perform a home test.
- Conflicting records: Give every result to the clinician and allow the laboratory to investigate with controlled testing and specimen-identity checks.
What to keep after confirmation
Save the laboratory report or donor-service documentation in a secure health-record app or file, and tell your regular clinician where it is. A blood-type card in a wallet can be a useful reminder, but emergency teams will still verify your type under their own procedures. Do not post a photograph of the report or home card publicly; it contains personal health information.
