Check compatibility in layers before changing PHP: create a restorable backup, update WordPress and extensions while the current PHP version is still running, read every plugin’s declared requirements, scan the actual plugin and theme code against your target PHP release, resolve each finding with its author or a replacement, then change PHP through your hosting provider and test the whole site. WordPress currently recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, while PHP 7.4 or newer is the stated minimum supported baseline; the correct target also depends on what your host and extensions support.
What compatibility checking can—and cannot—prove
A PHP update changes the runtime that executes WordPress core, plugins, themes, scheduled jobs and custom code. A component can declare that it requires a particular PHP version and still fail at runtime because of removed functions, changed behavior, stricter type handling, database assumptions or an untested code path. Conversely, a static scanner can report a line that is harmless in your configuration. Treat compatibility as a risk-reduction process, not a single green-light test.

- Recovery gate: you can restore files and the database, and you know how to switch the host back to the previous PHP version.
- Requirement gate: WordPress and each extension explicitly support the target PHP version.
- Code-analysis gate: scanners find no unresolved high-risk references in plugins, themes or custom code.
- Runtime gate: a staging or otherwise reversible copy passes functional checks after the PHP change.
Passing one gate does not replace the others. Declared requirements are metadata, static analysis is an approximation, and a front page loading normally does not prove that checkout, cron or an API integration works.
Choose a target PHP version deliberately
Use WordPress’s current recommendation as the destination
WordPress.org currently lists PHP 8.3 or greater as its recommended requirement. Make WordPress Core states PHP 7.4 or newer as the minimum supported baseline. These statements describe WordPress support policy, not a guarantee that every third-party plugin, theme, host module or custom integration is ready for every newer release. Versions below that baseline may also be end of life, so remaining on an old interpreter creates both compatibility and maintenance risk.

Record the starting point
Write down the PHP version currently serving the site, the WordPress version, the active theme, every active plugin and any custom mu-plugin or theme code. Record the target PHP version separately. A scanner report is meaningful only when it names the version it checked; do not assume that a report for PHP 8.0 covers PHP 8.3 or 8.4.
Confirm the host can provide the target
PHP is selected by the hosting company, not by the WordPress plugin updater. Ask the host which PHP versions are available for the site, whether the required extensions are enabled, how to switch versions, and how to revert. The exact control-panel path differs by provider. If the host offers a staging site, use the same PHP build and extension set that production will receive.
Back up before touching versions or updates
WordPress documentation puts “Make a backup of your website” before a PHP change because a backup is the practical route back when an update causes a fatal error or data problem. Create and verify both parts of the backup:
- Database: a complete export containing posts, pages, users, settings, orders and plugin data.
- Files: WordPress core files,
wp-content, uploads, active themes, plugins, mu-plugins and configuration files required to restore the installation.
Store the backup somewhere independent of the web server and note its timestamp, PHP version and WordPress version. A backup that cannot be downloaded or restored is not a rollback plan. Also identify the host’s PHP version switch or restore procedure before starting; if the site becomes inaccessible, you may need to use the host panel rather than WordPress.

Update WordPress, themes and plugins first
While the site is still on its current PHP version, open Dashboard → Updates and apply available WordPress, theme and plugin updates. Update in a controlled window, then browse the site and exercise its important workflows before changing PHP. Updating extensions first matters because maintainers often publish compatibility fixes in newer releases; scanning an obsolete plugin version can create avoidable findings.
- Make and verify the backup.
- Open Dashboard → Updates.
- Update WordPress core, then themes and plugins as appropriate for your maintenance policy.
- Check the front end, administration area and business-critical workflows on the existing PHP version.
- Record the exact versions now installed so you can correlate later errors with a specific change.
If an extension cannot be updated, mark it as an explicit risk for the compatibility review. Do not silently leave abandoned or inactive-but-loaded code in the scan set.

Inspect plugin headers
Plugin headers can declare Requires at least, Requires PHP and Requires Plugins. WordPress core validates these declarations for plugin requirements. If the running PHP version is lower than the declared minimum, core can return a plugin_php_incompatible error instead of allowing activation.
These fields are a first filter, not a certification. A declaration tells you the minimum version the author claims to support; it does not prove that every feature works on your chosen release, that a premium extension has been tested, or that custom code outside the plugin header is safe.

Build a requirements inventory

Run static analysis against the target PHP
After inventorying declarations, scan the code itself against the exact target version. Static analysis looks for syntax, function and behavior patterns associated with incompatible PHP releases; it does not execute every request or reproduce your production data.
Eli’s PHP Compatibility Scanner
The listing for Eli’s PHP Compatibility Scanner says it checks installed plugins and themes, including premium and custom code, for PHP 7.4 through PHP 8.4 using PHP_CodeSniffer and PHPCompatibility rules. Select the target release explicitly and include all code that will execute on the site, not merely publicly listed plugins. Save the report with the scan date and tested version.

CompatNav’s listing describes checks for PHP 8.0 through PHP 8.5 and reports possible breakages or deprecation notices. Its range differs from the scanner above, so confirm that your target appears in the selected profile. A result that covers PHP 8.5 is not evidence about a future release outside the stated range.

Use declarations to reject clearly unsupported combinations, scanners to find suspicious code, and staging to observe behavior. None of these methods supplies a universal failure-rate percentage, and no static report can certify code it did not inspect.

Investigate every finding before approving the change
Classify the result
- Confirmed blocker: a fatal error, unsupported syntax, removed function or author statement that the component does not support the target.
- Actionable warning: a deprecation or risky pattern that may work now but needs an update, configuration change or replacement.
- Likely false positive: a pattern that is guarded by a version check or never runs in your configuration; document the reasoning rather than deleting the finding.
- Unknown: code or behavior you cannot validate. Treat unknown as unresolved until the author or a runtime test provides evidence.
Contact maintainers with useful evidence
Send the plugin or theme author the installed version, target PHP version, scanner rule and line number, complete error text, WordPress version and a reproducible sequence. Ask whether the target release is supported and whether a fixed version exists. Avoid editing vendor files as a permanent solution; an update will overwrite the change and the underlying incompatibility remains.
Replace abandoned components
If an extension has no maintainer, no stated target support and unresolved scanner findings, select a maintained replacement or remove the feature. Deactivating a plugin is not the same as removing its code from the server: include must-use plugins, drop-ins, custom theme files and scheduled tasks in the review.
Fix custom code deliberately
For code your team controls, reproduce the warning in a development or staging copy, add a regression test for the affected feature, make the smallest compatible change, and rerun the scanner against the same target. Keep a record of the change so a later PHP upgrade does not reintroduce the pattern.

WordPress documentation supports backups and compatibility checks but does not publish one universal post-upgrade test script. Build a checklist from the site’s actual responsibilities and run it after selecting the target PHP version on staging.

Core navigation and administration
- Open the home page, representative posts, pages, archives and search results.
- Sign in and out, open the dashboard and edit a test post.
- Check media upload, image generation and downloads.
- Review the PHP error log and web-server log for new warnings or fatal errors.
Forms, transactions and user accounts
- Submit every important contact, registration and password-reset form.
- For a store or membership site, use the documented test mode to cover cart, checkout, payment callback, confirmation email and account pages.
- Verify permissions with representative administrator, editor and customer accounts.
Automation and integrations
- Run scheduled tasks and confirm that cron jobs complete rather than queueing failures.
- Exercise REST or other API calls used by mobile apps, reporting tools or external services.
- Check webhooks, email delivery, feeds, caching and search indexing where those functions are part of the site.
Capture the result, time and test account for each check. A staging pass is strongest when its database, extensions, PHP extensions and configuration match production; otherwise label differences before relying on the result.
Change PHP through the hosting provider
The PHP interpreter is configured at the hosting level. The WordPress updater cannot change it. Use the host’s documented version selector or support process, and schedule the change when you can monitor logs and restore service.

- Confirm that the backup and rollback instructions are available.
- Confirm the target PHP version and required extensions with the host.
- Switch staging first, if available, and rerun the functional checklist.
- Switch production using the host control panel or support request.
- Immediately monitor the site, logs, scheduled jobs and key integrations.
Do not infer the exact control-panel labels from another provider’s instructions. If the host cannot offer the target version or a rapid rollback, resolve that operational limitation before proceeding.
Verify production and know when to roll back
After the production switch, repeat the high-value checks rather than assuming staging guarantees success. Confirm public pages, login, forms, checkout or other revenue paths, cron, REST/API requests, media handling and error logs. Watch for delayed failures: a scheduled task or external callback may run hours after the change.
Rollback triggers
- PHP fatal errors or a blank/error page on a critical route.
- Lost data, failed transactions, broken authentication or inaccessible administration.
- Repeated cron, API or webhook failures that cannot be corrected quickly.
- New errors that remain after clearing caches and confirming configuration.
When a trigger occurs, use the host’s PHP selector to return to the previous version if that is safe, then restore files and the database only when the incident requires it. Preserve logs and the scanner report; they help the maintainer identify the cause. A rollback restores service, but it does not solve the incompatibility, so track the blocked component and plan an update, fix or replacement.
Common mistakes that make updates unsafe
- Checking only the header: a minimum PHP declaration cannot prove runtime compatibility.
- Scanning the wrong version: a report for PHP 8.0 does not automatically cover 8.3, 8.4 or 8.5.
- Ignoring custom code: child themes, mu-plugins and snippets can fail even when public plugins pass.
- Trusting a clean report as proof: scanners can miss issues and flag false positives; investigate both kinds of result.
- Updating PHP first: extension updates may already contain the required fixes, so update WordPress, themes and plugins while the old runtime is available.
- Skipping the backup test: an unverified backup may not restore the site.
- Testing only the home page: failures often appear in forms, checkout, cron, APIs, media processing or logs.
- Assuming WordPress controls PHP: the hosting company controls the interpreter and the rollback path.
A practical approval record
Keep one short change record for each PHP upgrade. It should contain:
- Current and target PHP versions, with the host and date.
- WordPress, theme and plugin versions after the Dashboard → Updates pass.
- Backup location, timestamp and restoration check.
- Declared requirement exceptions and dependency notes.
- Scanner name, version range, selected target and every unresolved finding.
- Author responses, replacement decisions or custom-code commits.
- Staging test results and production verification results.
- Exact rollback steps and the person authorized to execute them.
This record prevents a future maintainer from repeating an incomplete check and makes it clear which evidence supports the decision to proceed.
