Windows Home PCs may use Microsoft Device Encryption, but support varies by device. Before creating or restoring a Macrium image, confirm whether the Windows drive is encrypted and make sure you can access its recovery key. Also note that Macrium says an image of a BitLocker-encrypted volume is unencrypted unless you enable encryption for the backup file.

Does Windows Home have BitLocker?

Windows Home can include Device Encryption, but it is not available on every PC and should not be assumed to be enabled. Microsoft distinguishes Device Encryption from BitLocker Drive Encryption, which it lists for Windows Pro, Enterprise, and Education. Home users may therefore see Device Encryption settings rather than the “Manage BitLocker” controls shown in some instructions.

Microsoft says Device Encryption commonly turns on during setup or after the first sign-in with a Microsoft account or work or school account on a supported device. Check your PC’s actual status instead of relying on its Windows edition or on a generic guide.

How do I check encryption in Windows 11 Home?

  1. Open Settings. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption. If the page is available, check whether Device Encryption is on. Settings availability and labels can vary by device and Windows version.
  2. If that page is absent, check the drive’s status. Open Start, type System Information, and inspect the device’s encryption support information, or use the Windows search box to look for Manage BitLocker. Home PCs may not provide the same BitLocker management controls as Pro editions; an absent control is not proof that the drive is unencrypted.
  3. Confirm before taking action. If you cannot establish the status from Windows, do not assume the source drive or a future image is protected. Check the device manufacturer’s documentation or consult a technician before changing firmware or replacing hardware.

Microsoft’s Device Encryption guidance explains that availability depends on the device. Settings paths and controls can change; the key practical distinction is whether encryption is active on your own PC.

Where is my BitLocker recovery key?

The recovery key is a 48-digit number. Microsoft says it may be requested after a security-related event or hardware change, even when the owner is authorized. Before a BIOS or firmware update, hardware replacement, or Windows recovery operation, verify that you can reach a saved copy.

Microsoft lists these ways to back up a recovery key:

Can Macrium Reflect image a BitLocker-encrypted drive?

Yes. Macrium says Reflect can image, restore, and clone volumes encrypted with Microsoft BitLocker. However, the image file is not automatically encrypted: Macrium says an encrypted source volume is imaged in an unencrypted state. To protect the backup, enable AES encryption for the backup file in Reflect.

These are separate protections with different purposes:

  • Source-drive encryption protects data on the Windows volume when it is not unlocked.
  • Recovery-key access may be necessary to use most options in Windows Recovery Environment when BitLocker is enabled. See Microsoft’s BitLocker recovery options.
  • Backup-file encryption protects the image as a separate file; set it in Reflect rather than assuming source encryption carries over.

Macrium notes a constraint when restoring an encrypted source volume to a Windows dynamic volume. If that describes your recovery target, check Macrium’s current BitLocker-encrypted volumes guidance before proceeding.

What should I do before making or restoring an image?

  1. Check whether Device Encryption or BitLocker is active. Confirm the state on the PC being imaged; Windows Home support varies by device.
  2. Verify the recovery key. Find the saved key and confirm that you can access it from outside the PC. Do this before hardware or firmware changes, and before relying on Windows Recovery Environment.
  3. Choose a separate backup destination. An external USB drive is one practical place for an image. Macrium documentation describes selecting a destination folder, but does not establish a required capacity or a specific drive model.
  4. Enable encryption for the image file. In Reflect, configure AES backup-file encryption if the image needs protection. Store the password securely; an encrypted image is useful only if you can later unlock it.
  5. Plan for the recovery environment. Keep the recovery key available, and confirm that your recovery process can access the backup destination. Do not assume encryption on the original Windows drive also encrypts the image.

Is Reflect 8 still supported?

No. Macrium lists Reflect 8 Home as reaching end of life on December 31, 2025; it no longer receives security updates or support. Macrium’s materials identify Reflect X as its current product family, with Reflect X Home described as an annual-licensed offering for non-commercial use. Product availability and terms can change, so check Macrium’s lifecycle information and current Home product page for current details.
