You can check wildfire smoke without owning a sensor: use the U.S. EPA and U.S. Forest Service’s AirNow Fire and Smoke Map, search your location, and compare nearby PM2.5 readings and their trends. Treat those readings as useful estimates—not exact measurements at your address—and reduce exposure if it is smoky even when local data is missing or uncertain.

Start with the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map

For people in the United States, the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map is the most direct public tool for checking wildfire smoke. It combines readings from official permanent and temporary monitors with crowdsourced sensor data, and focuses on PM2.5—the particle pollutant central to wildfire-smoke monitoring. The map also shows fire locations and may show smoke plumes and smoke outlooks where available. The AirNow mobile app includes the map as well.

You do not need to buy or connect a personal sensor to use it. Search by city or ZIP code, allow location access if you want to use geolocation, or move the map to the place you want to check. If smoke is present but the standard AirNow AQI display seems reassuring, use the smoke map too: the standard dial may show a pollutant other than PM2.5, or there may be no nearby PM2.5 monitor for that display to use.

How to check the map step by step

  1. Open AirNow’s Fire and Smoke Map or the AirNow app. In the app, open the map feature; in a browser, open the Fire and Smoke Map.
  2. Set the location. Search for a city or ZIP code, permit geolocation, or pan and zoom until the map is centered on the place you care about. A city-wide search is a starting point, not a guarantee that the displayed measurement is from that exact neighborhood.
  3. Look for nearby measurement icons. The map distinguishes permanent monitors, temporary monitors, and sensors. Select a few points near the location to see the available AQI category, recommended actions, daily history, and whether the trend is stable, improving, or worsening.
  4. Compare more than one point when possible. Readings can differ across locations. Check how far each point is from you, what type of measurement point it represents, and whether nearby readings are moving in a similar direction.
  5. Look for smoke layers if they will help. NOAA smoke plumes may not appear by default. Turn them on in the map settings when useful, and refresh the map if it has been idle.
  6. Check again later and consult local guidance. Smoke can change during the day. Review forecasts and advice from state, local, or Tribal air-quality agencies rather than assuming one reading will stay representative.

The map gives you several kinds of information, not a single all-purpose “smoke number.” A monitor or sensor reports a measurement; its AQI category puts that reading into a health-oriented band; the history and trend provide context about whether conditions are changing; and fire or plume layers help show where smoke may be coming from. Use these together instead of treating any one symbol as the whole picture.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When you select a measurement point, note the information it actually provides: its category, the actions associated with that category, and its recent daily history or trend. A trend labeled stable, improving, or worsening describes the reported pattern over time; it does not guarantee what conditions will be later in the day. If you return to the map after leaving it open, refresh it before relying on the display.

Fire locations and smoke-plume or smoke-outlook layers are useful geographic context, but they are not substitutes for a PM2.5 measurement at your location. A plume layer can help you see where smoke may be traveling, while the monitor and sensor points show reported readings. Check both kinds of information when available, and use local agency forecasts for what may happen next.

Understand the AQI categories

The Fire and Smoke Map uses these AQI bands:

AQI category AQI range
Good 0–50
Moderate 51–100
Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups 101–150
Unhealthy 151–200
Very Unhealthy 201–300
Hazardous 301 and above

Read the category together with the map’s actions and trend information. A category is useful for understanding the reported conditions, but it does not establish the exact air quality inside your home or at every outdoor location nearby. Follow the advice shown and relevant local health guidance when conditions are concerning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The category is a way to interpret a reported AQI value, not a separate device reading. For a smoke-specific check, make sure you are looking at the Fire and Smoke Map’s PM2.5 information rather than assuming any general AQI dial represents smoke. A low or missing value on a display that is not using nearby PM2.5 data cannot answer the same question as an available PM2.5 reading.

Why one nearby reading may not match your air

A public map can fill the gap when you do not own a sensor, but it cannot make a measurement at every address. EPA cautions that nearby conditions can differ because of local sources, smoke plumes, wind, and terrain. Two nearby sensors may also disagree. A point several miles away is not a precise reading at your doorstep, and the map’s coverage is not uniformly dense everywhere.

Use distance, type, and trend to judge how much weight to give a point. A cluster of nearby readings that show a similar pattern is more informative than relying on a single faraway icon. If readings differ, do not average them mentally into a supposedly exact personal value. Note the spread, inspect each point’s daily history, and check again as conditions evolve.

Different icon types are part of the context, not a simple ranking from “good” to “bad.” The map includes official permanent and temporary monitors as well as low-cost sensors. EPA says low-cost sensor data on the map is corrected, but is for informational purposes only and is not used for regulatory decisions. That distinction matters: a corrected sensor reading can still help you understand local conditions without being equivalent to a regulatory measurement or a guarantee of accuracy at your home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EPA’s AirNow map disclaimer puts the limitation plainly: “For the Fire and Smoke Map, the sensor data has been corrected. It should be used for informational purposes only.” Correction does not remove every source of uncertainty, and it does not make a sensor point a direct measurement of your personal exposure. Think of the map as one practical source of evidence to combine with nearby readings, changing conditions, and agency advice.

When the map is sparse, stale, or confusing

Missing data does not mean the air is clean. It means the map does not provide a usable reading for that place at that time. Data may also be delayed or unavailable, and EPA notes that sensor readings can be erroneous. If there is smoke in your area but no nearby measurement, use the map’s broader context, check again later, and look at state, local, or Tribal air-quality information and forecasts.

  • No nearby points: Zoom out enough to see the nearest monitors and sensors, then note their distance. Consult another public agency source for your area; do not treat a distant measurement as a local one.
  • The regular AirNow display does not look smoky: Open the Fire and Smoke Map and look specifically for PM2.5 readings. The regular display can be driven by a different pollutant or lack nearby PM2.5 data.
  • Map seems unchanged: Refresh it if it has been idle. Check the daily history and return later, since smoke levels can shift during the day.
  • Nearby points disagree: Compare their locations and trends, and look for a broader pattern rather than choosing the most reassuring or most alarming single reading.
  • Smoke plume layer is absent: Check the map settings for NOAA smoke plumes; that layer may not be on by default. An absent overlay is not itself a measurement of safe air.

These checks help distinguish a lack of information from a low reading. Neither a sparse map nor an inactive plume display should be used as proof that smoke exposure is absent.

Which source should you use?

Different sources answer different questions. The Fire and Smoke Map is the clearest first stop for smoke-specific public information; the standard AirNow display can be useful but may not be showing PM2.5; local agency sources can add local forecasts and advice; and a personal monitor can add a measurement at the place where it is used. No single option removes all uncertainty.

Source What it can tell you What to keep in mind
AirNow Fire and Smoke Map PM2.5 AQI information from permanent and temporary monitors and crowdsourced sensors; history and trends; fire locations and smoke information where available. Readings may be delayed, unavailable, or erroneous. Nearby readings can differ and do not measure every address.
Standard AirNow AQI display An AQI display for the pollutant represented by the available data. It may show a pollutant other than PM2.5 or lack a nearby PM2.5 monitor, so it may not answer a smoke-specific question.
State, local, or Tribal air-quality sources Agency guidance and, where offered, forecasts for the relevant area. What each agency publishes varies; check its own current information and advice.
Optional personal PM2.5 monitor A reading near the device, including indoors if the device is suitable for that use. It measures only what its sensors are designed to detect. It is not a substitute for agency monitors and does not establish health risk on its own.

When comparing public readings, focus on whether they report PM2.5, how close the measurement point is, what type it is, and how current and consistent the trend appears. A map can provide broader geographic context; a personal monitor can provide a more localized reading where it is placed. Neither should be mistaken for a complete account of every pollutant or every person’s exposure.

There is no need to choose between a public map and local agency information: use them for different parts of the decision. AirNow gives a smoke-focused view across multiple kinds of measurement points, while state, local, or Tribal sources may offer area-specific forecasts and guidance. When you compare sources, check whether they report PM2.5, how near and current the data is, whether a trend or forecast is available, and what limitations the source states.

Should you buy a personal sensor?

Usually, start with the free public map. Consider a personal PM2.5 monitor only if more localized information would change a practical decision—for example, if public coverage near you is sparse or you want to understand indoor readings. EPA’s wildfire sensor fact sheet gives a general cost range of under $100 to several hundred dollars; that is the range stated by the source, not a current retail-price survey.

Before buying, check that the device measures PM2.5 and that it is suitable for the indoor or outdoor setting where you intend to use it. Compare its display and correction method with the nearby public readings, but expect differences rather than assuming the device must agree exactly. EPA’s guidance is clear that sensors have limits: they report only the pollutants for which they are designed, and a PM2.5 sensor does not detect gases or visible high-altitude smoke. EPA also advises people to reduce exposure regardless of what a sensor is reading.

A personal device adds information, not authority. It does not replace agency monitors, make a consumer reading a regulatory result, or diagnose an individual health risk. If a device and the public map disagree, consider distance, placement, timing, and the fact that smoke can vary across short distances; do not use the disagreement as a reason to ignore visible smoke or official health advice.

If you do consider a device, decide first what question you need it to answer: outdoor PM2.5 near your home, or indoor PM2.5 where you spend time. Then compare whether the device is designed for that setting, how it displays and corrects data, and whether you can look at its readings alongside nearby public measurements. The price range EPA reports is broad, and a higher price alone does not establish that a sensor is government-grade or that it will measure every smoke-related pollutant.

What to do when smoke is present

Use measurements to inform decisions, not to delay basic exposure reduction while waiting for a perfect local reading. When conditions are smoky or local officials advise caution, reduce strenuous outdoor activity and follow current local guidance. People who must spend extended time in smoky air may benefit from a properly fitting NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator. Cloth masks are not equivalent respiratory protection.

For indoor particle reduction, EPA identifies portable air cleaners, DIY air cleaners, and high-efficiency HVAC filters as options. EPA recommends CARB-certified air cleaners because they produce little or no ozone. Choose an option that fits your circumstances and follow the relevant agency and product guidance; the map itself does not tell you which indoor device is suitable for a particular room or building.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outdoor measurements can provide context for indoor exposure, but they do not predict it precisely. EPA’s indoor strategies page reports that during wildfire smoke events, when windows and doors are closed and no portable air cleaner is in use, indoor PM2.5 is generally around 55% to 60% of outdoor levels. EPA also reports substantial variation between homes, from 30% to 100%. Those are general observations, not a guarantee for a particular building or a reason to assume indoor air is safe without considering conditions.

Keep that indoor estimate in context: it describes a general pattern under the stated conditions, not a conversion you can apply to your home’s outdoor AQI to obtain an exact indoor value. Homes vary substantially, and the estimate does not replace indoor measurement where that is what you need. If indoor particle reduction matters, use the EPA-listed filtration options and relevant local guidance rather than relying only on an outdoor map reading.

A practical decision path

  1. First, check the smoke map. Search your area and inspect nearby PM2.5 points, AQI categories, and trends.
  2. Next, judge coverage. Ask whether readings are close enough to be relevant and whether more than one point tells a consistent story.
  3. Then add context. Turn on smoke plume information if useful, refresh stale map data, and check local agency guidance and forecasts.
  4. If the evidence is incomplete, act on the uncertainty. Missing or conflicting readings do not establish clean air. Reduce exposure when smoke is present and follow public-health advice.
  5. Consider a personal monitor only for a specific need. If you need a more localized PM2.5 reading, assess whether the device measures the pollutant and environment you care about, while retaining the limitations described above.

Frequently Asked Questions

How bad is the air quality near me if I don’t have a local sensor?

Open the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map, search your city or ZIP code or use geolocation, and inspect nearby PM2.5 monitor and sensor points. Compare more than one reading and its trend when possible. A point several miles away is useful context, not an exact measurement at your address.

How can I check AQI for wildfire smoke?

Use the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map, which focuses on PM2.5 and includes permanent and temporary monitors plus crowdsourced sensors. Select nearby points to see their AQI category, actions, daily history, and trend. The map also provides fire and smoke information where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an air quality app accurate when there’s no monitor nearby?

An app cannot provide a precise reading for a place without nearby data. AirNow readings can be delayed, unavailable, or erroneous, and smoke conditions can vary with local sources, wind, plumes, and terrain. Check multiple nearby points and local agency guidance; treat distant readings as estimates rather than a measurement at your home.

What does it mean if the regular AirNow AQI looks good but I can see smoke?

The standard AQI display may represent a pollutant other than PM2.5, or may lack a nearby PM2.5 monitor. Open the Fire and Smoke Map and check its smoke-specific PM2.5 points. Do not use a reassuring general display or missing data as proof that smoke exposure is absent.

Do I need to buy a sensor to know whether to reduce exposure?

No. The AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and state, local, or Tribal air-quality guidance can help you assess conditions without owning a sensor. If smoke is present, reduce strenuous outdoor activity and follow local advice rather than waiting for a perfect local measurement. A personal PM2.5 monitor is optional and does not replace agency monitors.

The Bottom Line

Use the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map first: search your area, compare nearby PM2.5 readings and trends, and check local agency guidance. The readings are useful estimates, not exact measurements at every address. If smoke is present or data is missing, reduce exposure rather than waiting for a perfect sensor reading.
