The safest pre-install check is to boot the Linux distribution’s live USB and test the exact computer before touching its internal drive. In the live desktop, connect to Wi‑Fi and load a page, play audio through every output you need, test the microphone if relevant, then suspend and resume the machine repeatedly. These functional tests are more useful than merely seeing a device listed.
Use the same distribution and release you plan to install. A result from an Ubuntu live image describes that image, its kernel, firmware and drivers on that particular hardware; it is not a guarantee for every Linux distribution, release or later configuration.
What a live-session test can—and cannot—tell you
A live session runs Linux from a USB drive without replacing the operating system on the internal disk. Ubuntu’s installation tutorial describes the choice plainly: “If you click Try Ubuntu, you can preview Ubuntu without making any changes to your PC.” That makes it an appropriate compatibility check before installation.

It is not a universal certification. A successful Ubuntu preview does not prove that another distribution, another release, a different kernel, a different firmware bundle or a proprietary driver will behave identically. Conversely, a failure in the preview can reflect a missing driver or firmware package rather than permanently unsupported hardware.

Think of the result as evidence for one combination:
- the exact computer model and hardware revision;
- the distribution and release on the USB;
- the live image’s kernel, firmware and open-source driver set; and
- the particular Wi‑Fi network, audio devices and suspend cycle you tested.
Record those details so that later troubleshooting does not mix results from different machines or releases.
Prepare the right evidence before booting
Check the exact computer model
Search the target distribution’s certified-hardware list for the complete model designation, not just the product family. Small revisions can use different wireless, audio or graphics components. Ubuntu describes certified devices as computers tested and confirmed to work well with Ubuntu. Certification is useful supporting evidence for the vendor’s tested Ubuntu configuration, but it does not establish behavior on another distribution or on an untested revision.

Ubuntu’s guidance is to try the live preview and test the hardware directly.
Prepare a USB drive of at least 8 GB
Ubuntu recommends a flash drive of 8 GB or larger for its live preview. Creating installation media erases the selected USB drive. Back up anything on it, identify the intended drive carefully and verify the selection before writing the image. The size recommendation concerns the media used for the preview; it does not by itself describe the storage requirement for a permanent installation.

Use the release you intend to install
Download or create the live media for the same distribution and release you are evaluating. For example, the current Ubuntu live-preview documentation is for Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS, while the directly opened installation tutorial is for Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS. Those are different releases, so do not silently apply a result from one to the other. If you are comparing distributions, create separate media and repeat the tests for each one.
Write down a test record
Before booting, make a short record with the computer’s model, hardware revision if known, target distribution and release, and the network and audio devices you expect to use. During the session, add the live image or kernel information when available, the exact network used, each audio path tested, and the result of every suspend/resume cycle. This context is more valuable than a simple “Linux works” note.
Boot the live desktop without installing
- Insert the prepared USB drive and start the computer from it using the machine’s normal boot-device selection method.
- When the distribution offers a preview and an installation choice, select Try, Try Ubuntu or the equivalent preview option. Do not start the installation yet.
- Wait for the live desktop to finish loading. Give the desktop time to initialize networking, audio and power-management services before judging a device.
- Confirm which distribution and release the session is running. Keep that information with your test record.
- Perform the Wi‑Fi, audio and suspend tests below. If a feature fails, repeat the observation once after checking for an obvious block or connection error, and record both the symptom and the condition under which it occurred.
A live preview normally uses open-source drivers. Ubuntu notes that proprietary drivers may be missing from this environment. The preview therefore shows what works out of the box with the image; it may not show what becomes available after an installed system downloads additional updates or third-party drivers.
Test Wi‑Fi as a real user task
1. Confirm that the adapter is visible
Open the desktop’s network controls and look for a wireless interface. Seeing a named adapter is only the first check. A device can be enumerated while blocked, unable to associate, missing firmware or unable to pass traffic.
2. Check for a radio block before diagnosing support
Ubuntu’s rfkill manual documents listing wireless-radio state. In a terminal, run:

rfkill list
Review whether the wireless device is marked as blocked. A software block can sometimes be cleared through the desktop network controls or the appropriate rfkill action. A hard block—such as a physical wireless switch or key-controlled radio disable—remains unavailable after a software unblock. Make sure the hardware switch or keyboard radio control is enabled before concluding that the adapter lacks Linux support.

3. Join the network you actually need
Select the intended Wi‑Fi network, enter its credentials and wait for the connection to complete. If the machine will be used on more than one band or network type, test the network that matters most to your decision. A network name appearing in the list is not proof that association and authentication work.
4. Use the connection
Load a normal web page or perform another ordinary network task. This checks that the connection carries traffic after authentication rather than merely displaying a connected icon. If the task fails, note whether the failure occurs while scanning, joining, obtaining an address or transferring data.
5. Interpret the result in driver context
A successful connection in the live session is direct evidence that the image’s driver and firmware combination works with that adapter and network. It does not prove that every Linux release will include the same support. An unsuccessful connection may be caused by a radio block, missing firmware, a network-specific issue or a driver limitation. Ubuntu’s installation guidance notes that an Internet connection can allow the installer to download updates and third-party drivers, so the installed system may have options that the offline preview does not.
Test every audio path you depend on
Built-in speakers
Play a known audio source through the computer’s built-in speakers. Use the desktop volume controls to confirm that the correct output is selected and that mute is off. Listen for actual sound rather than relying on a device name in a settings panel.

Headphones and external outputs
Plug in the headphones or external audio device you expect to use and play sound again. Test each output separately: a laptop can produce sound through its speakers while its headphone jack, USB audio device or other output remains unusable. If your normal setup includes more than one output, record the result for each.
Microphone input
If you need voice calls, recording or accessibility input, test the built-in microphone and any headset or external microphone separately. Use a recording or input-monitoring application in the live desktop and verify that the level changes when you speak. Playback from speakers does not establish that an input device works.
Why detection is not enough
The Linux kernel’s ALSA documentation describes driver configuration and device-specific control quirks. As a result, a detected sound card does not prove that its desired output, input, volume control or jack switching works. Function-level tests matter more than the presence of a card name. Record which path worked, which did not, and whether a change of output in the desktop controls altered the result.
Test suspend and resume repeatedly
Run one complete cycle
- Save or close anything in the live desktop that you do not want to lose.
- Choose the desktop’s suspend or sleep command and wait for the machine to enter a low-power state.
- Wake it using the normal power button, keyboard or lid action.
- Wait for the display and desktop to return.
- Check the functions you rely on: reconnect to Wi‑Fi or verify that the existing connection still transfers data, play audio through the required output, and test the microphone if it is important.
Repeat the cycle
Run more than one suspend/resume cycle if suspend reliability matters. A machine can wake successfully once and fail on a later cycle. Note whether the display returns, whether the desktop responds, whether the wireless interface reconnects and whether each audio path still works. Also record a failure to enter suspend, a failure to wake, a blank display after wake, a frozen desktop or devices that remain present but no longer function.

Understand the hardware and driver boundary
Ubuntu documents that suspend may not be supported properly by some hardware. It also notes that devices can fail after resume when their driver does not support suspend correctly. Therefore, “the computer went to sleep” is only half of the test. The resume state must be usable for the work you intend to do.

What each result means
| Observation | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Model appears on Ubuntu’s certified list | The vendor tested that model in a specified Ubuntu configuration. | It does not guarantee another distribution, release or hardware revision. |
| Wi‑Fi adapter is listed | The live system can see a wireless device. | It does not prove that the radio is unblocked, can authenticate or can pass traffic. |
| Wi‑Fi joins and loads a page | The adapter, image driver/firmware and tested network worked together in the live session. | It does not prove identical behavior after a release change or different driver installation. |
| Sound card is listed | The audio hardware is enumerated. | It does not prove speaker, headphone, microphone or volume-control operation. |
| Each required audio path plays or records | The tested output and input functions worked in that live image. | It does not cover an untested port, dock or future configuration. |
| Computer suspends and resumes once | One sleep/wake cycle completed. | It does not prove repeated reliability or that Wi‑Fi and audio recover. |
| Repeated cycles restore the required devices | The tested hardware and drivers handled the observed cycles. | It is still not a cross-distribution compatibility score. |
How to troubleshoot a failed check
Wi‑Fi is missing or shows no networks
- Check the desktop radio control and run
rfkill listto distinguish a software block from a hard block. - Enable any physical wireless switch or keyboard radio key if a hard block is reported.
- Confirm that you are testing the intended release and that the live session has had time to initialize.
- Record the adapter name, the block state and whether another network is visible. Do not label the hardware unsupported solely because one network does not appear.
- Remember that the preview may not include proprietary drivers. If the installed system will have Internet access, the installer may be able to obtain updates or third-party drivers.
Wi‑Fi joins but traffic fails
- Try the ordinary page-load test again and note whether the connection drops immediately or only under traffic.
- Test a second network if one is available to separate an adapter problem from a network-specific problem.
- Keep the exact release, adapter and symptom in your record for model-specific support searches.
Speakers work but headphones or microphone do not
- Select the specific output or input in the desktop sound controls rather than assuming the system switched automatically.
- Repeat playback or recording after connecting the device.
- Check mute and input level controls.
- Record the failing path separately. ALSA device-specific controls and quirks can affect one path while another works.
The machine will not suspend
- Try the suspend command again after allowing the live desktop to finish starting.
- Record whether the failure is refusal to enter sleep, an immediate wake, or a freeze during entry.
- Do not treat a successful shutdown as evidence of suspend support; they exercise different power-management paths.
The machine wakes but a device is broken
- Check the display first, then test Wi‑Fi and every required audio path.
- Repeat the cycle to determine whether the problem is consistent.
- Record which device failed after resume, because Ubuntu identifies driver support during suspend as a potential cause.
Account for distribution, release and firmware differences
Linux compatibility is not a single property of a computer. It is an interaction among hardware, firmware, the kernel, drivers, desktop services and the distribution’s packaging choices. The Ubuntu preview is evidence about the image you booted. The current preview documentation is associated with Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS, while the installation tutorial directly opened for this guidance is Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS. Treat their labels and behavior as release-specific.
The same caution applies to supporting tools. The referenced Ubuntu Noble rfkill documentation reports util-linux rfkill version 2.39.3-9ubuntu6.6. The ALSA material is the Linux kernel’s rolling “latest” documentation. Those references explain the relevant mechanisms, but they do not define a universal result for every distribution or kernel version.
Proprietary-driver availability is another boundary. Ubuntu says the preview uses open-source drivers and that proprietary drivers may be missing there. If a device fails in the preview, determine whether the final installation can obtain an appropriate driver before making a decision. If a device works only after such a driver is installed, document that requirement rather than calling it “plug and play.”
Compare two computers or distributions fairly
When choosing between real options, use the same test sheet for each one. Compare the exact model and hardware revision, the exact distribution and release, and observed behavior rather than reputation or a generic compatibility label.
| Test item | Record for every candidate |
|---|---|
| Identity | Computer model, revision, target distribution and release, live image or kernel information when available. |
| Wi‑Fi | Adapter visible, block state, network joined, ordinary page or traffic test, and any dropouts. |
| Audio output | Built-in speakers, headphones and each external output required. |
| Audio input | Built-in microphone and each required headset or external microphone. |
| Suspend | Entry result, wake result, number of repeated cycles, and whether display, Wi‑Fi and audio recovered. |
| Extra requirements | Whether the result depended on a proprietary driver, a network connection during installation or another stated condition. |
No universal cross-distribution compatibility score is defined by the official material used here. A candidate with a “certified” label and a candidate with an unlisted model should therefore be compared using the same observed tests, not by assigning invented percentages.
Make the installation decision
- Proceed confidently: the live session connects to Wi‑Fi and passes traffic, every required audio path works, and repeated suspend/resume cycles restore the functions you need.
- Proceed with a documented condition: a feature works only after a known driver or update can be obtained, or one nonessential path is unavailable. Record the condition and verify that you can satisfy it after installation.
- Pause and investigate: a required feature fails consistently, suspend leaves the machine unusable, or the failure cannot be separated from a block or network issue. Search for reports using the exact model, revision, distribution and release rather than relying on a different machine’s result.
- Test another distribution or release: if the current image lacks a driver or has a suspend regression, repeat the complete live-session checklist with the alternative image. Do not assume that a result transfers automatically.
Keep a concise compatibility record
A useful record can be as simple as this:
Computer model/revision: [record the exact designation here]
Distribution/release: [record the live image and release]
Live image/kernel information: [record if shown]
Wi‑Fi adapter: [name]
Wi‑Fi block state: [rfkill result]
Wi‑Fi test: [joined network and useful task result]
Speakers: [worked/failed]
Headphones or external output: [worked/failed]
Microphone: [worked/failed/not required]
Suspend cycle 1: [entry, wake, Wi‑Fi/audio recovery]
Suspend cycle 2: [entry, wake, Wi‑Fi/audio recovery]
Driver or network condition: [record any requirement]
Use the completed record when checking model-specific reports or repeating the test after a release change. It prevents a successful result from one image—or a failure caused by a blocked radio—from being mistaken for a general statement about Linux on that computer.
