The normal way to check a Moodle site’s version is to sign in with an administrator account and open Site administration > Notifications. That page displays the Moodle version and build information. If you need the exact code value, open the installation’s version.php file in a text editor. Git checkouts have a separate command, and non-administrators may be able to identify only the Moodle branch from a Moodle Docs link.
Choose the method that matches your access
Moodle exposes its version at several layers. The administrator page is the quickest for a site owner. The code file is the authoritative route when you have filesystem access. Custom code can read the same values through Moodle’s global configuration object, while a Git checkout can be checked from its commit history. A teacher without administrator rights may have only a branch-level clue.

Use the Notifications page whenever it is available. Move to version.php or Git only when you need code-level confirmation, are troubleshooting a mismatch, or cannot use the web interface.
Check the version in Moodle’s administrator interface
Step-by-step
- Sign in to the Moodle site with an administrator account.
- Open Site administration.
- Select Notifications.
- Read the Moodle version and build information shown on that page.
This is the least disruptive method because it requires no server shell, source-code browsing, or file changes. It is also the clearest method when you are reporting a site’s running version to a colleague or support team: copy the version and build text exactly as Moodle displays it.

What the page tells you
The Notifications page is intended to show the version of the Moodle code currently in use, together with build information. Record the complete displayed string rather than only the first number. A branch number tells you the major line, while the release and build details distinguish the particular code revision more precisely.
If Notifications is unavailable
A missing menu item usually means the account is not an administrator or that the site’s interface differs from what your account can access. Do not infer a patch level from a partial page or from the appearance of the theme. Use the code-file, programmatic, or Git method if you have the required server access; otherwise ask an administrator to perform the Notifications check.

Locate and open the file
- Identify the Moodle installation’s code directory.
- Find its
version.phpfile. In newer Moodle layouts, the public code may place this file under apublic/directory; use the path that exists in the checkout you are inspecting. - Open the file in a text editor.
- Read the version variables without changing them.
MoodleDocs describes moodle/version.php as the place to obtain the exact Moodle version. The file defines a machine-oriented $version value and a human-friendly $release value. The release value commonly includes a release and build string, while the numeric value is used by Moodle’s code and upgrade logic.
Do not open it as a normal browser page
version.php is a PHP source file, not a public information page. Moodle documentation cautions that it should not be viewed in a browser as ordinary content. Use a server-side text editor or another controlled method that reads the file from the installation. Avoid editing it merely to inspect the values; changing core version data can make the installation inconsistent with the code that is actually deployed.

Which file is the right one?
Read the file belonging to the Moodle code directory that the web server uses. A server can contain more than one checkout, an old backup, or a staging copy. If the value in the file disagrees with the administrator page, verify the installation path first. The web page reflects the code loaded by that site; a file opened from a different directory describes that other copy instead.
Understand $version, $release, and build information
The entries in version.php answer slightly different questions:

When documenting an installation, keep both the human-readable release/build text and the numeric value if you are working at code level. The two values serve different audiences: a support request normally benefits from the release string, while a script or compatibility test may need the numeric value.
Do not treat a branch number as an exact patch identification. For example, knowing that a site belongs to a particular major or minor line does not by itself prove which maintenance release or build is installed. The displayed build or the values in the active version.php provide the finer detail.

Report the running version from custom Moodle code
If you are building an internal diagnostic page, support script, or compatibility check, Moodle makes the version information available through the global configuration object. Custom Moodle code can read:
$CFG->version
$CFG->releaseMoodleDocs explains that these values are copied into $CFG from the version information. A diagnostic can therefore display the same machine-oriented and human-friendly values without asking an administrator to copy them manually from the interface.

- Use
$CFG->versionwhen code must compare Moodle versions or enforce a compatibility rule. - Use
$CFG->releasewhen a person needs to read or report the installed release and build. - Show both when an incident record or support ticket needs an unambiguous identification.
Keep any diagnostic read-only. The values are for reporting and comparison; they are not a substitute for the Moodle upgrade process, and they should not be overwritten by a custom script.
Check a Git-managed Moodle installation
A Git checkout can be inspected without relying on the web interface. First confirm which branch the working tree is using:

git branchThe location of Moodle’s version file differs by release family, so use the command for the layout in your installation:

How to read the result
The command prints the most recent Git commit affecting the relevant version file. That commit gives you a source-control reference for the code version represented by the checkout. Record the branch output and the one-line commit together; either one alone can be ambiguous when a repository contains several maintenance lines.

Why using the wrong command can mislead you
Running the pre-5.1 path command against a 5.1-or-later layout, or the newer path against an older checkout, points Git at the wrong location. The distinction is not cosmetic: the file moved under public/. Select the command from the release family that matches the directory structure you can see, then compare the result with the active web installation if both are available.
Find a branch clue without administrator access
A regular teacher may be able to use the Moodle Docs for this page link at the bottom of a Moodle page. This link is available only when an administrator has enabled it, and MoodleDocs documents the shortcut for English or German sites. Open the link and inspect the documentation URL. Its branch number can provide a clue about the Moodle line; documented examples include URL numbers representing Moodle 2.7 and 3.2.

Know the limit of this shortcut
The URL clue is not a replacement for the administrator Notifications page when you need an exact patch or build. It generally identifies a branch rather than the complete release string. The link can also be absent because of administrator settings or because the site language does not meet the documented English-or-German conditions.
Use the clue to ask a precise follow-up question: “Which exact release and build is installed?” An administrator can then verify it in Notifications or by reading the active version.php.

Troubleshoot conflicting or incomplete results
The web page and file show different versions
- Confirm that the file came from the code directory used by the site, not a backup, staging tree, or old deployment.
- Check whether the installation has the newer
public/version.phplayout and that you did not read a similarly named file elsewhere. - Ask an administrator to repeat the Notifications check and compare the complete build text with the file’s
$release.
You can read the file but cannot identify the release
Look for both variables rather than relying on a single number. The numeric $version is designed for machines, while $release is the human-readable label. A support report that includes both avoids confusion between an internal code value and the release string people normally recognize.
The Git command returns no useful result
- Run
git branchfirst so you know the checkout and branch you are examining. - Use the path that matches the Moodle release family:
public/version.phpfor 5.1 and later, orversion.phpfor 5.0 and earlier. - Make sure the command is executed inside the Moodle Git checkout, not a parent directory or a separate deployment copy.
You are not an administrator and Moodle Docs is missing
The non-administrator shortcut depends on an administrator-enabled link and documented language conditions. If it is unavailable, there is no reliable way in the supplied web interface to establish an exact patch/build from a regular teacher account. Request the complete version from an administrator or someone with filesystem or shell access.
The version number is only a branch
Record it as a branch clue, not as an exact installed build. Use Notifications, version.php, or the Git history of the active checkout to establish the release and build that support, upgrade, or compatibility work actually requires.
Record the result for support and maintenance
A useful version record includes the site, the date checked, the method used, and the complete value displayed or read. For a web check, copy the Notifications text exactly. For a code check, record both $version and $release. For Git, include the branch and the one-line commit output, along with whether the checkout uses public/version.php or the older path.
This level of detail prevents a common administrative error: treating a broad branch label as though it were a precise patch release. It also lets another administrator reproduce the check without changing Moodle files or guessing which installation directory was examined.
