To check whether RAM will work, identify your exact motherboard model and revision, then verify the memory generation, module type, capacity, slot arrangement and speed in the board’s official specifications or manual. Check your processor’s memory limits as well. For a particular kit, search the board maker’s memory support list or QVL by the kit’s exact part number and tested configuration.

1. Find the exact motherboard model and revision

Start with the model printed on the motherboard or shown in your computer’s system information. Record the revision too, if one is listed: boards with similar names or different revisions may not share the same specifications. Open the manufacturer’s official product or support page for that exact board and consult its specifications and manual. Intel likewise advises checking motherboard documentation or asking the board vendor when verifying a specific memory model: Intel’s guide to processor memory limits.

2. Match the memory generation and module type

DDR generation

Confirm whether the board accepts DDR4, DDR5 or another stated generation. DDR generations are not backward- or forward-compatible: a DDR5 module will not fit and work in a DDR4 slot. Their connector notches are positioned differently, so do not choose RAM based only on its appearance or a similar-sounding product name.

DIMM or SO-DIMM

Check the required form factor in the board or system documentation. Desktop boards generally use full-size DIMMs, while laptops and compact systems commonly use SO-DIMMs. These are different module types; verify the specification rather than relying on assumptions about the computer’s size.

3. Check capacity, slots and module arrangement

Look up the motherboard’s maximum memory capacity, number of memory slots, supported module sizes and supported configurations. Then compare those limits with the total capacity and per-module capacity of the kit you are considering. A board’s headline maximum does not necessarily apply to every processor or every arrangement of modules.

Record how many modules the kit contains and which slots the board manual recommends populating. A kit’s configuration matters alongside its total capacity: check the board’s documentation for supported module counts and slot combinations.

4. Check what the processor supports

Memory compatibility depends on both the motherboard and the installed CPU. Check the processor maker’s official specifications for maximum memory size, supported speed and channel support, then compare those limits with the board’s specifications. Intel’s support guidance explains where to find the maximum memory size, speed and number of channels for Intel processors: Intel processor memory-limit guidance.

5. Search the motherboard’s QVL for the exact kit

A motherboard memory support list, often called a qualified vendor list (QVL), records memory parts and configurations the board maker tested. Search using the kit’s exact part number, then check how many modules or which slots were tested. A match is useful evidence that the listed configuration was tested; the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish that every unlisted kit is incompatible.

PUSKILL DDR4 3200MHz CL16 Desktop RAM Kit Heatsink, 32GB (2x16GB)
  • [UNCOMPROMISED 32GB PERFORMANCE] Supercharge your rig with 32GB (two 16GB modules) of high-speed memory. Designed for power users, this kit effortlessly handles heavy 4K video editing, complex 3D rendering, and lets you play AAA games while streaming without a single stutter.
  • [3200MHZ BLAZING FAST SPEED & CL16] Experience ultra-responsive multitasking with speeds up to 3200MHz (PC4-25600) and tight CL16-18-18-42 timings. NOTE: To achieve the advertised 3200MHz speed, you MUST enable the XMP (Intel) or DOCP (AMD) profile in your motherboard's BIOS.
  • [AGGRESSIVE ALUMINUM HEATSINK] Keep your system cool under extreme pressure. The premium aluminum heat spreader efficiently dissipates heat from the memory modules, preventing thermal throttling during marathon gaming sessions while adding a sleek, aggressive look to your build.
  • [MAXIMUM DUAL-CHANNEL POWER] Installing this matched pair activates dual-channel architecture, doubling your memory bandwidth. This dramatically increases frame rates in CPU-intensive games and cuts down rendering times for creators.
  • [BROAD COMPATIBILITY & DIY INSTALL] Engineered to work flawlessly with major Intel and AMD motherboards. Easy push-to-install design for 288-pin desktop slots. (Friendly Reminder: These are Desktop UDIMMs. Not compatible with laptops. Default speed without XMP enabled will be 2133MHz/2400MHz/2666MHz depending on your system).

Kingston recommends checking the motherboard QVL for the memory kit and configuration, as well as the processor’s supported speed. Its support information also covers memory configurations and overclocked memory: Kingston performance and gaming memory support.

6. Consider BIOS support and advertised speeds

Older boards and newer, high-capacity modules

For an older system or a newer high-capacity module, check the board maker’s current BIOS notes and memory support page. Kingston notes that newer DRAM chip densities may need BIOS optimization and that some older systems may not support higher-density modules. Verify support for the particular board, revision and module rather than assuming that a module fits the slot and will be recognized.

Profile or overclocked speeds

A kit’s advertised high speed may depend on enabling a BIOS memory profile and is not guaranteed across every CPU, board and DIMM configuration. Confirm the CPU and board support, and begin with settings supported by the board and memory vendors. The system may operate at a lower speed than the kit’s advertised profile if the full configuration does not support that setting.

7. Compare candidate kits before buying

Use the same checklist for each option. A manufacturer memory finder can help identify candidate upgrades, but cross-check its result against the exact board and CPU specifications.

  • Memory generation: DDR4, DDR5 or the generation specified by the board.
  • Form factor: DIMM or SO-DIMM, as required by the system.
  • Total capacity and capacity per module.
  • Number of modules and the slots they will occupy.
  • Standard speed versus a profile or overclocked speed.
  • CPU support for the capacity, speed and memory channels.
  • Whether the exact kit part number and configuration appear on the motherboard QVL.
  • For older systems or newer high-capacity memory, relevant BIOS support.

Crucial offers a system scanner, and Kingston offers a memory finder that can search by system or device or by memory specifications. Treat either as a way to find candidates, not as a replacement for checking the board and CPU documentation: Crucial System Scanner and Kingston Memory Finder.
