To see which iPhone apps can access your location, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Tap an app to review its permission and turn off Precise Location if a general area is enough. You can also restrict access to while an app is in use, require it to ask, or block it through Location Services.
How to see which apps have location access
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
- Review the app list. Tap an app to see its location permission and the app’s explanation for requesting access.
Apple’s iOS 26 iPhone User Guide documents this path in Control the location information you share on iPhone. The app’s own explanation, terms, and privacy policy can help you judge whether its requested access fits what you use it for. If the labels or path differ on your phone, check its installed iOS version and Apple’s current instructions.

Choose how much access each app needs
Permission labels can include the following options, although an app may offer only some of them. Apple describes these choices in Turn Location Services and GPS on or off on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Recommended Free Tools
| Setting | What it allows | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Never | Blocks the app from accessing your location through Location Services. | Choose it if location is not needed for the app’s features you use. |
| Ask Next Time or When I Share | Lets you decide when the app next requests location access. | Useful when access should depend on the task or occasion. |
| While Using the App | Allows access while the app or a relevant feature is visible, subject to Apple’s stated behavior for background use. | Consider it when location is useful during active use but not continuously in the background. |
| Always | Allows the app to access location in the background. | Keep it only when a feature you rely on needs background access. |
If you are unsure whether an app needs location all the time, changing it to ask or allowing it only while in use gives you a narrower option than leaving background access enabled.

Use approximate location instead of precise location
For an app that needs to know your general area but not your exact position, open its settings under Location Services and turn off Precise Location. The app then receives approximate rather than precise location through this control. That may suit some local recommendations or regional features while preserving more precision for uses that genuinely need it, such as turn-by-turn navigation.
This setting changes the location information shared through Location Services; it is not a guarantee that a service cannot infer location in other ways. Apple explains that Location Services can draw on GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular networks in About privacy and Location Services in iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS.

Review permission use with App Privacy Report
To see how apps use permissions you have granted, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report and enable it. It also reports network activity. It begins collecting information only after you turn it on, so it is not an instant record of earlier activity; allow time for details to appear. Apple’s Control access to information in apps on iPhone explains the report, while its App privacy features in Apple products guide describes reporting privacy-sensitive data and sensor access over the past seven days.
When to turn off Location Services for the whole iPhone
You can switch off Location Services at the top of its settings page, but that is a broad change. Apple says apps cannot use your location from Location Services in the foreground or background when it is off, and warns that many important iPhone features stop working. If your goal is to restrict one app, change that app’s permission instead. See Apple’s guidance on privacy and Location Services and turning Location Services and GPS on or off.

Pay attention to background-use reminders
Apple may remind you when an app uses location in the background and show a map of the locations it accessed. Use that prompt as a chance to decide whether the app still needs its current permission; you can return to its entry under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services to change it.
