To see the driver associated with a specific Windows 11 device, open Device Manager, expand the hardware category, right-click the device, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab. Use Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates when you want to see optional driver updates offered to this Windows installation. These are related tools, but they answer different questions: Device Manager shows what is associated with a selected device, while Windows Update shows updates that Windows is prepared to offer.
Use Device Manager to inspect an installed driver
Device Manager is the most direct built-in route when your question is “What driver is this particular device using?” It presents hardware by category, so you can inspect a display adapter, network adapter, sound device, storage controller, or another component individually.
- Open Start and type Device Manager.
- Select Device Manager from the search results. You can also open the Start context menu and choose Device Manager.
- In the device tree, select the arrow beside the category that contains the hardware you want to inspect.
- Right-click the device entry and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
The Driver tab is tied to the device you selected, not to every driver on the computer. If you need to check more than one component, return to the device tree and repeat the category, Properties, and Driver-tab steps for each relevant entry.

Choose the right hardware category
Device Manager groups entries by function. The exact list depends on the computer, its hardware, and what Windows recognizes. Common categories include display adapters for graphics hardware, network adapters for wired and wireless connectivity, sound-related categories for audio hardware, storage or controller categories, and input-device categories. Expand a category only after deciding what component you are trying to identify; this reduces the chance of reading the driver for a related but different device.

Some hardware can expose more than one entry. A single physical design may divide separate functions among separate components, so similar-looking entries are not automatically duplicate drivers. Inspect each entry that is relevant to the symptom or hardware function you are investigating.
Record the details before changing anything
If you are diagnosing a problem or preparing to contact support, write down the device name and the information shown on its Driver tab. Recording the provider, displayed date, and version information gives you a precise reference for the selected device. The device name and any warning shown in Device Manager are also useful when you search the hardware maker’s support documentation.
Keep the notes associated with the exact entry you inspected. A computer can contain several network, audio, storage, or system-related entries, and a driver detail from one entry should not be attributed to another.

For a useful record, copy the provider, driver date, and driver version exactly as Windows displays them. Keep the device name alongside those values, because two entries in the same category can have different providers or versions. If a warning icon appears in the device tree, also open the device’s Properties window and record the status message and code. These details let a support technician distinguish the affected component from other hardware with similar names.
The Driver tab identifies the association for that selected device; it is not a promise that every file used by the operating system appears as a separate top-level entry. For a practical check, focus on the hardware entry connected to the problem or question, then inspect other relevant entries one at a time.
What the Driver tab tells you
The Driver tab reports the driver information associated with the selected device. That makes it useful for confirming which device entry you are looking at, identifying its provider, and comparing the installed version information with documentation from the hardware maker.
Do not judge freshness by the displayed date alone
A date that looks old is not, by itself, proof that a driver is obsolete or incorrectly installed. Microsoft explains that the driver provider sets the descriptive date displayed in Windows, while Windows Update uses targeting information inside driver files to decide which driver is appropriate for a particular device. Microsoft’s October 20, 2025 support guidance summarizes the point this way: “Driver dates might look old, but that is not true.”

Use the date as one piece of identification rather than as a ranking system. If the computer is working normally and Windows Update does not offer a newer applicable driver, replacing a driver solely because its date appears old can create unnecessary risk.
Why version numbers may look inconsistent
Driver providers do not all use the same numbering scheme. Two related entries can have version numbers that do not increase in an obvious sequence, and a newer installation choice is not established merely by comparing the first few digits. Match the version to the exact device and provider, then rely on Windows Update or the hardware maker’s official support information when deciding whether an update applies.
Comparing a graphics driver version with a sound or network driver version is also unhelpful: they serve different devices and may come from different providers. Even entries that belong to one physical design can perform separate functions and follow separate release schedules. Treat each Device Manager entry as its own record.
Review several devices without confusing their entries
There is no single Driver tab that represents every device. A practical inventory is built by moving through the categories that matter to your computer or the problem you are solving.

- Expand the category and note every entry that appears relevant.
- Open each entry’s Properties > Driver tab and record the device name, provider, date, and version.
- If several entries have similar names, keep them as separate records rather than merging them.
- Check other categories only when the symptom or support instructions point there.
This approach produces a device-by-device record while preserving the relationship between a driver and the hardware function it serves. It is more precise than looking only for a list of available updates, because an update screen can show what Windows is prepared to install without identifying every currently associated driver.
How to make a repeatable inventory
Use the same order each time you review the machine: identify a category, expand it, open one device’s Properties, and finish its Driver tab before moving to the next entry. Write each record on its own line or in its own note. If you later install an update, return to that same device entry and make a second record rather than replacing the original. This preserves a clear before-and-after comparison without assuming that similarly named entries are interchangeable.
Use Windows Update to check for available driver updates
Windows Update has a different purpose from Device Manager. Windows regularly checks for driver updates and automatically downloads and installs a newer driver when one is available through its normal update process. You do not need to replace a currently installed driver merely because you are checking which one is present.

Open the optional driver list
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if that section is available.
This page shows optional driver updates offered to that Windows 11 installation. The list is not the same thing as a complete inventory of installed drivers: it describes updates available through Windows Update at that time. Windows also installs many recommended drivers automatically, so an empty Optional updates section does not mean that Device Manager has no drivers.

Use Device Manager when you need an answer about what is installed for a named piece of hardware. Use Windows Update when you need to know whether Microsoft is offering an applicable update. If you need both answers, inspect the device first and then check Windows Update.
Decide whether an update is actually needed
A driver check is often an information-gathering task, not an instruction to replace software. Before changing a driver, identify a reason: a device is not working, Device Manager shows an error, the hardware maker documents a fix for your model, or Windows Update offers an applicable update.
- No symptom and no offered update: keep the current driver and retain your notes.
- Windows Update offers an optional driver: read the update description and install it only when it addresses your device or a known issue.
- The device is malfunctioning: record the device name and any Device Manager code, then consult the hardware maker’s official support page for the exact model.
- The driver appears old by date only: do not treat the date as proof of obsolescence.
- Several related entries are present: do not remove entries simply because their names or versions look similar.
Microsoft advises starting with Windows Update or the hardware maker’s official support site for a needed update and avoiding driver downloads from other websites. A driver package intended for a different model, operating-system edition, or hardware revision can be unsuitable even when its name looks familiar.

Do not use a generic “driver updater” as a substitute for identifying the device. The built-in screens already provide the device association and update path needed for this check. If a manufacturer supplies a package, verify the exact computer or component model and Windows 11 configuration on its official support page before downloading.
Troubleshoot warnings and Device Manager codes
A warning icon or an error code changes the question from “Which driver is installed?” to “Why can Windows not use this device correctly?” Open the affected device’s Properties and note the code exactly. The code narrows the type of problem, but it does not by itself identify a safe download.

Code 28: drivers are not installed
Microsoft documents Code 28 as indicating that the drivers for the device are not installed. Confirm that you have selected the correct device entry, record its name, and check Windows Update. If Windows Update does not provide what is needed, use the hardware maker’s official support page and search by the exact computer or component model.
Code 52: Windows cannot verify the digital signature
Code 52 indicates that Windows cannot verify the driver’s digital signature. Treat this as a trust or verification problem, not simply as evidence that the driver is old. Record the device and code, avoid unofficial download sites, and follow guidance from Microsoft or the hardware maker for that specific model.
Other warning situations
For a warning that does not match the examples above, capture the complete message displayed in the device’s Properties window. Include the device name, provider, displayed date, version, and code when you contact support. This prevents a support conversation from confusing one hardware entry with another and gives the technician the information needed to identify the correct package.
A safe workflow for checking and updating drivers
- Identify the device. Start in Device Manager and expand the category connected to the symptom.
- Inspect the current association. Open Properties and the Driver tab; record the device and driver details.
- Check for a real reason to change it. Look for a warning, a documented hardware issue, or an update offered for that installation.
- Check Windows Update. Review the normal update status and the Optional updates path for driver entries.
- Verify the model before downloading. If an update is still required, use the hardware maker’s official support site and match the exact model and Windows 11 configuration.
- Recheck the same entry. After an update, return to the same Device Manager device and inspect its Driver tab again so your before-and-after notes refer to the same hardware.
This sequence separates identification from installation. It also gives you a record to use if the device behaves differently after an update.
