To check which devices can trigger iPhone proximity features, first identify what appears when the devices come close: a contact exchange is NameDrop, a selected item transfer is close-range AirDrop, and synchronized content in a compatible app is SharePlay. Each feature has different device, software, and settings requirements, so there is no single compatibility list that covers them all.

Identify the feature before checking compatibility

“Bringing devices together” describes more than one iPhone behavior. The nearby device might be another iPhone or an Apple Watch, and the result depends on the feature you are using. Start with what you see on screen rather than assuming that every close-range action is NameDrop or that every feature requires Ultra Wideband (UWB).

  • NameDrop: the devices approach and a contact-sharing screen appears. It can exchange contact information between nearby iPhones or between an iPhone and a supported Apple Watch.
  • Close-range AirDrop: you bring two iPhones together to initiate an AirDrop transfer for an item you have selected. It is an alternative way to start AirDrop, not a way to send a file without choosing one.
  • SharePlay: bringing two iPhones together starts a SharePlay session in a compatible app. The result is synchronized content or an invitation to share, not a contact-card exchange or an ordinary file transfer.

These descriptions follow Apple’s iPhone User Guide instructions for NameDrop, nearby AirDrop, and SharePlay. Check the relevant row below, then verify the software and settings on both devices.

Compare the requirements by feature

Feature Nearby device Minimum software stated by Apple Settings or other conditions UWB or regional check
NameDrop Another iPhone, or a supported Apple Watch iOS 17.1 or later on the relevant iPhone; watchOS 10.1 or later for the relevant Apple Watch Bringing Devices Together must be enabled. NameDrop is on by default, according to Apple’s iPhone User Guide. Do not treat UWB as a universal NameDrop requirement. Check Apple’s separate availability information for a UWB-dependent feature.
Close-range AirDrop Another iPhone iOS 17 or later for the close-range shortcut Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled; AirDrop receiving settings and proximity also matter. Apple’s general AirDrop guide states a maximum separation of 10 metres (30 feet). The cited AirDrop instructions do not make UWB a blanket prerequisite for the close-range action.
SharePlay by bringing iPhones together Another iPhone iOS 17 or later on both iPhones AirDrop must be enabled, and both people must be in each other’s contacts. The app and content must also be available to both people; a subscription or regional restriction can affect access. Do not assume UWB is required just because the phones are brought together. Check separately if the particular spatial-awareness feature depends on it.

The software minimums and conditions in this table are those stated in Apple’s relevant support documentation: the iPhone User Guide pages “Use NameDrop on iPhone to share your contact info,” “Use AirDrop to send items to nearby Apple devices,” and “Start SharePlay by holding two iPhone devices close together,” plus Apple’s “Secure NameDrop” guidance. Apple’s “How to use AirDrop on your iPhone or iPad” also explains the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth requirements for AirDrop. The cited material does not establish one universal list of iPhone hardware models for all three features; use the version and conditions for the specific action you want.

Check NameDrop with an iPhone or Apple Watch

NameDrop is the relevant feature when the goal is exchanging contact information. Apple documents it for a nearby iPhone or supported Apple Watch. The supported Watch families listed in Apple’s current guide are Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later SE models, Apple Watch Series 7 and later, and Apple Watch Ultra models. The watch must be running watchOS 10.1 or later, and the relevant iPhone must be running iOS 17.1 or later.

  1. Check the iPhone version. On the iPhone, open Settings > General > About and check the iOS version. NameDrop requires iOS 17.1 or later according to Apple’s NameDrop guidance. If you are checking a watch pairing, verify the iPhone that will participate, not just another phone in the household.
  2. If the other device is a Watch, check its family and software. Match it against the supported families above, then check that watchOS is 10.1 or later. A Watch not in the listed families should not be assumed compatible simply because it can connect to an iPhone.
  3. Check the proximity setting. Go to Settings > General > AirDrop and find Bringing Devices Together. The control governs NameDrop and related bring-together actions. If it is off, turn it on only if you want to use the feature.
  4. Bring the relevant devices close and look for the contact-sharing screen. If the expected NameDrop screen does not appear, confirm the iOS/watchOS requirements and setting on the devices involved before troubleshooting a different feature.

A supported Apple Watch is a specific NameDrop case; do not infer that every Apple Watch can trigger it. Conversely, the Watch model list is not a general compatibility list for close-range AirDrop or SharePlay, which are described here as iPhone-to-iPhone actions.

Check close-range AirDrop between two iPhones

Use the close-range AirDrop requirements when you are trying to send a selected item. Apple says the shortcut works on supported models running iOS 17 or later. Both iPhones need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, and the receiving configuration and the devices’ proximity still affect whether the transfer can proceed. Apple’s general AirDrop guide gives a maximum separation of 10 metres (30 feet); that is a stated operating limit, not a promise that a transfer will work at that distance in every setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the action. Select the item you intend to send and use AirDrop. The close-range gesture starts the AirDrop process; it does not select content for you.
  2. Check iOS on both iPhones. Open Settings > General > About on each and confirm iOS 17 or later for the close-range shortcut.
  3. Enable both connections. Confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for both phones. AirDrop uses these connections, so having only one enabled does not meet Apple’s stated conditions.
  4. Review the receiving setting. Check AirDrop receiving availability on the receiving iPhone. If that phone is not able to receive from the sender under its current setting, bringing the phones together will not override that restriction.
  5. Bring the phones close enough to initiate the shortcut. If it does not start, try with the phones closer, then check the version, both radios, and the receiving setting. The 10-metre general AirDrop maximum is not a recommended distance for the bring-together gesture.

Apple’s page “Use AirDrop to send items to nearby Apple devices” describes the close-range shortcut, while “How to use AirDrop on your iPhone or iPad” covers the basic send and receive flow. Keep those two checks separate: the close-range shortcut can fail because the initiating conditions are not met, while an otherwise-started AirDrop can still be affected by the receiver’s settings.

Check SharePlay started by bringing two iPhones together

For this SharePlay action, Apple requires iOS 17 or later on both iPhones, AirDrop enabled, and each person in the other’s contacts. The phones’ software alone does not guarantee that any chosen content can be shared. The app must support SharePlay, both people need access to the content, and an app subscription or regional content restriction may apply.

  1. Check both iOS versions. Verify iOS 17 or later on both phones in Settings > General > About.
  2. Check that AirDrop is enabled. Apple’s bring-together instructions list AirDrop as a requirement for this SharePlay start method. A disabled AirDrop setting can prevent the action even if the app supports SharePlay.
  3. Confirm the contact relationship both ways. Each person must be in the other’s contacts; one-sided contact information is not the stated condition.
  4. Use a compatible app and content both can access. If the proximity action works but playback or shared access does not, check app support, account access, subscription requirements, and regional availability for that content.

Apple’s guide “Start SharePlay by holding two iPhone devices close together” describes this specific way of starting SharePlay. Do not apply its requirements as a blanket rule for every method of starting SharePlay in every app.

Know when to check Ultra Wideband availability

UWB is a separate compatibility question. Apple publishes a device and region availability list for Ultra Wideband, and the availability of spatial-awareness features can depend on both the device and the country or region where it is used. Consult Apple’s “Learn about Ultra Wideband availability” page when the feature you are checking specifically depends on UWB, and match both the device generation and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use UWB availability as a shortcut for checking NameDrop, AirDrop, or SharePlay. The cited Apple instructions specify operating-system versions and settings for those actions; they do not establish UWB as a universal prerequisite for every close-range sharing feature. A phone can therefore meet the stated software and settings checks for a sharing action even when your separate question about a UWB-dependent spatial feature still needs checking.

Turn off bring-together behavior

If the contact-sharing prompt or another bring-together action is unwanted, use the setting Apple identifies for these features:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then AirDrop.
  3. Turn off Bringing Devices Together.

Apple says NameDrop is on by default. The control is the direct way to disable NameDrop and other Bringing Devices Together features; it is different from changing who can receive an AirDrop. If you only want to limit file reception, review the AirDrop receiving setting rather than assuming that disabling one setting changes the other.

Troubleshoot by the symptom

What happens Checks to make first
No contact-sharing prompt appears Confirm it is an iPhone/Watch NameDrop pairing, check iOS 17.1 or later and, for a Watch, a supported family plus watchOS 10.1 or later. Then check Settings > General > AirDrop > Bringing Devices Together.
Close-range AirDrop does not begin Confirm that an item is selected for transfer, both iPhones run iOS 17 or later, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on both, AirDrop receiving is allowed, and the phones are close together.
SharePlay does not start when phones meet Check iOS 17 or later on both iPhones, AirDrop enabled, and that the two people are in each other’s contacts. Also confirm you are using a compatible app.
SharePlay starts, but content is unavailable Check each person’s access to that content, including any app subscription requirement or regional restriction. The proximity gesture does not grant access that either person lacks.
A spatial-awareness feature is unavailable Check Apple’s UWB device and region availability information for that feature rather than treating the sharing checks above as a UWB test.

Work down the matching row rather than toggling unrelated settings. These behaviors have overlapping proximity cues, but their requirements are not interchangeable: an AirDrop receiving setting is relevant to file transfer, while mutual contacts and content access are SharePlay conditions.

Sources and scope

The requirements above reflect Apple Support documentation available for the features as described here, including Apple’s iPhone User Guide pages for NameDrop, nearby AirDrop, and SharePlay; “Secure NameDrop” (published October 2024); “How to use AirDrop on your iPhone or iPad”; and “Learn about Ultra Wideband availability” (published March 27, 2026). Apple’s documentation gives feature-specific instructions rather than one combined compatibility list. For a device or region not explicitly covered by the stated requirements, check Apple’s current guide for that feature instead of assuming it is supported.
