To see which Galaxy apps have sent notifications recently, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, tap the sorting menu near the top, and choose Most recent. If you dismissed the alert and need to read the notification itself, use Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history. History only contains alerts received after the feature was enabled, and Samsung describes the view as covering the previous 24 hours.
Choose the right view first
Samsung provides two related views, but they answer different questions. Use the app list when you only need to identify the source of recent alerts. Use Notification history when you need to inspect an alert that was dismissed, snoozed, or is no longer in the notification shade.

See apps that sent notifications recently
This is the quickest method when you heard a sound, saw a banner, or simply want to know which apps have been active. It works as an app-level lookup, so it is useful even when you do not know what the notification said.
- Open Settings on your Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap App notifications.
- Near the top of the screen, open the drop-down sorting menu. Depending on the software version, it may show another sorting choice initially.
- Select Most recent.
The list now prioritizes apps that have sent notifications recently. Tap an app to open its notification controls. From there, you can review the app’s available notification settings and change how its alerts behave.

What this list can and cannot tell you
- It identifies the app that generated a notification; it is not a transcript of every alert.
- It is useful even when the notification banner is no longer visible.
- It does not recreate an older alert that the phone never retained.
- It may show an app that sent a background or low-visibility notification, so the app name may be more informative than the sound you remember.
If several apps have notified you, use the ordering to narrow the possibilities, then open the likely app and inspect its notification controls. You can repeat the process after another sound occurs to see whether the ordering changes.
The wording Most recent describes the sort or filter choice, not a separate history database. Opening this screen does not turn on Notification history, and it does not cause old notification text to appear. It simply gives you the built-in list Samsung provides for recently notifying apps.
Read a dismissed or snoozed notification
When the notification shade has been cleared, the app list tells you which apps were active but may not show the alert’s text. Notification history is the built-in place to look for recent alert records.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Advanced settings.
- Tap Notification history.
- If the switch is off, turn on Notification history.
- Return to the history screen after new notifications arrive. Those subsequent alerts can then appear in the record.

Why enabling history now does not find an earlier alert
Notification history is not a retroactive archive. If the feature was disabled when the sound or banner occurred, switching it on afterward cannot reconstruct that event. The history begins recording eligible notifications only after you enable it. Samsung explains this limitation in its regional support instructions at Samsung Japan’s notification-history guide.
That distinction matters when troubleshooting a one-time sound. If you enable history immediately after hearing it, the screen may be empty even though the phone made a real sound. An empty screen in that situation does not prove that no notification occurred; it means the feature was not recording at the time. Leave the switch on and check again after the next alert.
Use both views to identify an unexplained sound
A sound without an obvious banner can come from an alert that disappeared quickly, an alert you cleared accidentally, or an app whose visual notification settings are quiet. Work through the two views in this order:
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications and select Most recent. Note the apps at the top of the list.
- Open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history.
- Look for a record around the time of the sound. If history was already enabled, the record may reveal the app and the alert details.
- Tap the responsible app from the history or recent-app list to open its notification controls.
- Adjust that app’s notification behavior, or open the app itself to review its internal alert settings.
If history was not enabled before the sound, it cannot identify that past event. Leave it enabled so the next unexplained alert is recorded.
For a repeatable investigation, note the approximate time, whether the phone was locked, and whether you saw a banner. Then check both screens promptly. The Most recent list helps narrow the sender, while history can confirm the actual alert when it had already been dismissed or snoozed. Checking both prevents a common mistake: assuming that an app shown in the recent list necessarily produced the particular sound you heard.
Manage notifications after you find the app
Finding the sender is only useful if you can decide what should happen next. Tapping an app in App notifications opens its controls. The exact options vary by app and Galaxy software version, but the controls generally let you decide whether that app may send notifications and how prominently they appear.

Reduce interruptions without disabling everything
- Keep important alerts enabled and change less important alerts to a quieter presentation when the available controls provide that choice.
- Review the app’s individual notification categories if they are listed. A news, shopping, social, or game app may use separate categories for messages, promotions, reminders, and background activity.
- If the sound is the problem rather than the alert itself, inspect the app’s sound setting and the phone’s notification sound and volume settings.
- Check the app’s own settings as well. Some apps generate alerts that can be configured only inside the app.
Make one change at a time, then wait for the next expected alert. That makes it easier to tell which setting solved the problem. If you disable every category at once, you may stop a useful warning along with the unwanted sound and lose the ability to identify which category was responsible.
Understand the 24-hour history limit
Samsung’s US troubleshooting documentation and its Japan support instructions describe Notification history as a 24-hour view. Treat that as a short-term troubleshooting window, not permanent storage. An alert that is more than a day old may no longer be available even when history is enabled.
The 24-hour description concerns the built-in history feature, not the age of the app list’s sorting information. Samsung does not present either screen as an indefinite archive. If you need to investigate a recurring issue, check the phone soon after the event and capture the app name or notification details while they are available.
The period is best understood as a practical limit, not a promise that every item remains visible for exactly the same number of hours on every model. Samsung’s US instructions and its Japan page both describe 24 hours, while the layout and labels can vary with the device and software version. Do not rely on this screen to preserve records for a long-running audit.

Samsung’s Japan support page states that stored notification-history records are cleared when the feature is switched off. Therefore, do not disable the feature while trying to preserve an existing record. If you want to stop collecting history, review any information you need first, then switch it off.
Turning the feature on again starts a new recording period; it does not restore records cleared when it was disabled. This is another reason to copy down the app name or relevant details before changing the switch. If the history screen is already empty after you turned the feature off, there is no built-in step that reconstructs those cleared entries.
If the menu labels do not match
Galaxy models and One UI software versions can place the controls differently or use slightly different wording. Try these recovery steps:

- Open Settings and use the search field for Notification history. Open the matching result if it appears.
- Search for App notifications or Most recent if you are looking for the recent-sender list.
- Confirm that you are in the phone’s main Notifications settings rather than an individual app’s settings.
- Check Settings > About phone > Software information to note the model and software version before looking up model-specific instructions.
- If the search result is missing or the path remains different, consult Samsung support for that exact model and software version.
Regional support pages can show a different language or screen arrangement, but the functions are the same: a recent-app list under notification settings and a history option under advanced notification settings. Samsung’s Japan support page was updated May 22, 2026; an update or a model-specific One UI build can therefore make screenshots look different from your device without changing the purpose of the controls.

Use this short decision process when you are unsure which screen to open:
- Need only the app name? Open Notifications > App notifications > Most recent.
- Need the text or details of a dismissed alert? Open Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history.
- Was history off at the time? The old alert cannot be recovered; enable history now for the next event.
- Is the alert older than 24 hours? It may have aged out of the built-in history view.
- Do labels differ? Search Settings and verify the phone’s software version.
Privacy and practical considerations
Notification history can expose message previews and other alert details to anyone who can open that settings page. Enable it when troubleshooting, review the records you need, and remember that switching it off clears the stored history according to Samsung’s support guidance. If your phone is shared or frequently unlocked by other people, consider whether retaining previews is appropriate.
The recent-app list and Notification history are diagnostic tools, not a guarantee that every system event will be visible. Apps can change their notification behavior, notifications can expire, and software updates can alter labels. For a reliable investigation, check soon after the event, record the app name, and then adjust the app’s notification controls.

What if I turned history on but still see nothing?
History starts recording after enablement. Wait for a new notification, then return to the history screen. Turning it on immediately after an earlier sound does not populate the screen with that earlier event.
Is Notification history permanent?
