On your iPhone, open Settings > General > CarPlay, select your paired vehicle, and tap Customize. The apps shown there are the apps iOS currently recognizes as available for CarPlay with that vehicle profile. You can add, remove, and reorder them from the same screen; the new order is used the next time the iPhone connects to CarPlay.
Apple uses “entitlement” in a developer-specific sense. A developer must request Apple’s approval for a CarPlay capability, enable the managed capability for the app’s App ID, create a provisioning profile, and include the matching entitlement in the app project. As a driver, you do not inspect those signing files on the iPhone. The Customize screen is the practical, consumer-facing check.
Check the CarPlay app list on your iPhone
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap General.
- Tap CarPlay.
- Choose the vehicle you have paired with this iPhone. If several vehicles are listed, select the profile for the car you want to configure.
- Tap Customize.
- Review the apps in the list. Tap Add to place a supported app in CarPlay, tap Delete to remove one from the CarPlay layout, or drag the handles to change the order.
- Reconnect the iPhone to CarPlay. Apple says the apps should appear in the new order the next time the iPhone connects.
The list is stored in the iPhone’s CarPlay settings, so you can manage it before getting back into the car. You do not have to be sitting in the vehicle to change the layout, but the selected vehicle profile matters when more than one car is paired.
What the Customize list tells you
An app that appears in Customize has exposed CarPlay support that iOS recognizes for that vehicle profile. It is the most useful answer to “Which apps work with CarPlay on my iPhone?” The list is specific to the current iPhone configuration rather than a promise that every app in the App Store can run on a CarPlay screen.

If an app is absent, it is not currently available to CarPlay in that configuration. Several explanations are possible:
- The developer has not shipped CarPlay support for the app.
- The app’s current release does not expose the capability that an earlier release did, or support has changed in a later release.
- The app is not offered with CarPlay support in your region.
- The connected vehicle or its CarPlay implementation does not support the relevant function.
Apple’s consumer documentation does not promise a universal, permanent list of every app with a CarPlay entitlement. The on-device list is therefore more useful than an old web list: it reflects the apps and vehicle profile that iOS can use now.

What “CarPlay entitlement” means
For drivers, “entitlement” usually means “the app appears in the CarPlay customization list.” In Apple’s developer system, however, an entitlement is a capability that Apple grants and controls. It is part of the app’s signed configuration, not a switch that a user can turn on in Settings.
The developer approval and signing sequence
Apple’s documented process has several stages:
- The developer requests the appropriate CarPlay entitlement from Apple.
- If Apple approves the request, the capability is added to the developer account as a managed capability.
- The developer enables the CarPlay capability for the app’s App ID.
- The developer creates a provisioning profile that contains the approved capability.
- In Xcode, the developer adds the matching key to the app’s
Entitlements.plistfile and signs the app for distribution.
That process explains why installing an app does not automatically make it appear in CarPlay. The app must be built and signed with an approved CarPlay capability, and it must implement the corresponding CarPlay experience. A normal iPhone app cannot simply declare itself compatible from its own settings.

Apple’s documented CarPlay entitlement categories
The entitlement key identifies the category for which Apple has granted the app access. The following keys are documented by Apple:

Apple also describes CarPlay experiences for video in supported parked-car scenarios, messaging and VoIP, navigation, parking, electric-vehicle charging, quick food ordering, fueling, and driving tasks. The exact interface depends on the app’s implementation and on what the vehicle and current CarPlay software allow.
How to interpret what an app can do
Seeing an app in the Customize list confirms CarPlay availability, but it does not mean that every part of the iPhone app will appear on the vehicle screen. CarPlay presents approved interfaces designed for use in the car.
Audio apps
Audio apps generally expose playback controls, browsing, and queue or library access through CarPlay’s audio templates. The iPhone app may contain features that remain available only on the phone.
Navigation apps
Navigation apps can provide guidance through CarPlay when their implementation and the connected vehicle support navigation. A navigation entitlement does not mean that every map view or setting from the phone app is reproduced in the car.

Communication and VoIP apps
Communication apps may expose messages, calls, or Siri-mediated actions rather than a full phone-style interface. Safety-oriented CarPlay rules limit how these interactions are presented while driving.

These categories are task-specific. An app may expose a focused workflow—such as locating a charger, finding parking, placing a quick food order, locating fuel, or completing a driving task—without exposing its entire iPhone interface. Availability can also depend on the service’s regional coverage and the vehicle’s supported CarPlay functions.
Examples of apps Apple lists for CarPlay
Apple’s consumer materials give examples including Amazon Music, Audible, ChargePoint, Google Maps, Spotify, Waze, WhatsApp, and YouTube Music, along with other apps that vary by category and region. These examples illustrate the kinds of services that can have CarPlay support; they are not a guarantee that every example will appear on every iPhone or in every country.
To compare two apps on your own phone, use four checks:
- Category: Is the app an audio, navigation, communication, charging, parking, food-ordering, fueling, or driving-task app?
- CarPlay surface: Does it provide full CarPlay templates, audio playback, Siri-mediated actions, navigation guidance, or another focused workflow?
- Current availability: Does it appear in Settings > General > CarPlay > [vehicle] > Customize?
- Context: Does your vehicle support the relevant CarPlay function, and is the app available in your region and current software release?
Why an installed app may not appear
The app has no CarPlay capability
Many iPhone apps are not CarPlay apps. Installation alone does not create an entitlement. If the developer has not requested and implemented an approved capability, iOS will not place the app in the Customize list.

You selected the wrong vehicle profile
CarPlay settings are organized by paired vehicle. If you own or regularly use more than one car, open Settings > General > CarPlay and select the exact vehicle before checking Customize. A list associated with one vehicle should not be treated as a universal list for every car paired to the iPhone.
The app or iOS release changed
Third-party CarPlay support can change when the developer ships a new app release or Apple changes the relevant iOS behavior. A list saved from an earlier release may no longer match the current list. Check the phone’s current Customize screen instead of relying on an old article or screenshot.
Regional availability differs
CarPlay support can vary by region, especially for services such as charging, parking, fueling, and food ordering. An app may have an approved category but still be unavailable for your account or location.
The vehicle does not support that function
CarPlay capabilities are also constrained by the connected vehicle. A vehicle may support basic audio and communication functions without supporting every newer category or parked-car experience. The app’s presence in the list and the functions the vehicle actually exposes are related but not identical checks.

Yes, if you are checking as a driver. The iPhone’s Customize screen is sufficient to see which supported apps iOS can use with a selected vehicle. No Mac, developer account, cable, adapter, subscription, or purchase is required for this consumer check.

No, not in the developer-signing sense. Apple’s entitlement workflow involves a developer account, an App ID, a provisioning profile, and an Entitlements.plist entry in Xcode. The iPhone does not provide a consumer screen that displays another app’s signed entitlement keys or Apple’s approval status. If you are developing an app, you must use Apple’s developer tools and account workflow rather than the CarPlay list in Settings.
What to do when the list looks wrong
- Open Settings > General > CarPlay and verify that you selected the intended vehicle.
- Tap Customize and check whether the app is present but positioned below the visible portion of the layout.
- If it is present, use Add, Delete, or the drag handles to set the desired layout.
- Reconnect the iPhone to CarPlay so the vehicle receives the updated order.
- If the app is missing entirely, treat that as “not currently available for CarPlay in this configuration,” then consider whether the app release, region, or vehicle capability explains the difference.
Do not infer a missing entitlement from the fact that an app works well on the iPhone. CarPlay eligibility is a separate, Apple-controlled capability, and the in-car interface must follow the category and templates the developer implemented.
The practical limit of the iPhone list
The Customize screen answers a precise question: which apps does this iPhone currently recognize as available for CarPlay with this paired vehicle profile? It does not expose the developer’s entitlement file, list every app approved somewhere in the world, or predict whether a future app release will add or remove support.
For the most reliable result, check the list after installing or updating an app, select the correct vehicle, and reconnect CarPlay after making changes. When you need to know what an app can actually do, combine its category and the functions it exposes in CarPlay with the vehicle’s supported features.
