Use macOS’s built-in Storage view—no paid utility is required. On macOS Ventura 13 or later, choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage, then open Applications. On older macOS releases, choose Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. Apple documents both routes in its storage support article and Mac User Guide.
The Storage view groups disk use by apps and other file types, shows available space, and lets you inspect the Applications category. It is an overview for finding app-related storage use, not a guaranteed inventory of every file associated with every app.
Choose the correct Storage path for your macOS version
Apple changed the main settings layout in macOS Ventura. The version boundary matters because the same menu path does not exist on every Mac.

If your Mac uses System Settings, follow the Ventura-and-later route. If it opens an About This Mac window instead, use the earlier-version route. Do not judge the version from the Mac’s age alone; use the labels you actually see in the Apple menu and settings window.

Check app storage on macOS Ventura 13 or later
- Open the Apple menu. Select the Apple logo in the upper-left corner of the screen.
- Open System Settings. This is the settings app used by Ventura and later releases.
- Choose General. The General section contains the Mac’s Storage page.
- Select Storage. macOS calculates a storage overview. The page includes a chart that groups disk use by apps and file types and shows free space.
- Open Applications. Select the Applications category in the storage overview. If the page offers an Info or More Info control, open it to inspect the category.
- Compare the displayed app sizes. Use the values shown for the Applications entries to identify which installed apps account for the largest share of that category.
The calculation can take a moment, especially when the Mac is updating its storage summary. Wait for the category information to populate before drawing conclusions. If the figures change later, that does not necessarily indicate an error: Apple says storage information updates automatically as you free space and that category sizes can vary.
What you should see
The Storage page is an overview rather than a duplicate of every folder on the disk. It presents categories, including Applications, alongside the amount of free space. Opening Applications narrows the view to installed applications that macOS places in that category.
How to identify the largest entries
Read the size value beside each application shown in the Applications details. The app with the greatest displayed value is using the most storage within that view. If several entries are close in size, record their names and values before deciding what to investigate; deleting or moving one small app will not materially change a nearly full disk.

- Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner.
- Select About This Mac. Older macOS releases expose storage information through this window rather than System Settings.
- Choose Storage. The Storage tab displays a chart grouping the Mac’s space by apps and other file types and indicates available space.
- Open the Applications category or its detail control, if the window provides one.
- Review the values shown. Use the listed application sizes to determine which entries contribute most to application storage.
Labels and the precise arrangement of controls can differ between older releases. The important distinction is the location: About This Mac is the documented route for versions before Ventura, while System Settings is the documented route for Ventura 13 and later.

How to read the Storage chart and Applications category
The chart is a category summary
The chart divides used space into broad groups such as applications and other file types. It also reports free space, so you can see both the scale of application use and the remaining capacity. A large Applications segment means installed applications collectively occupy a substantial amount of the disk; it does not, by itself, identify a single cause.
Applications excludes system applications
Apple’s documentation states that the Applications category contains installed apps while excluding system applications. That distinction matters when you reconcile the category total with what you see elsewhere. Built-in software that macOS treats as part of the system may not appear as an ordinary removable entry in the Applications details.
A category total is not a complete app-file inventory
An app can be associated with files that macOS classifies outside Applications. The Storage page is therefore best used to answer, “Which installed apps are largest in this category?” It should not be treated as a promise that every preference, cache, support file, document, or other item related to an app will be listed under that app. The category overview is the reliable starting point for prioritizing investigation, not a forensic accounting of every byte.
Allow the figures to settle
Storage categories can change as macOS recalculates them. Apple says the information updates automatically as you free space and that category sizes vary. If you remove or move data and the chart does not change instantly, give the system time to refresh, then check the page again.

What “System Data” means when you are looking for app storage
Some people open Storage, see a large System Data category, and assume that it represents hidden applications. Apple describes System Data as a broad category for files that do not fit more specific categories. It includes system-managed material, and its size varies with the Mac’s current state.
System Data is not an alternative Applications list. A large System Data value does not prove that one particular app is responsible, and the System Data entry cannot be selected and deleted directly from that category view. Use Applications to inspect installed app storage; treat System Data as a separate, variable category that requires a different investigation.
Why the two categories should not be added together casually
The Applications figure describes the Applications category, while System Data covers material outside more specific categories. Because the categories are defined by macOS’s classification rules, moving between them does not reveal a hidden subtotal for a particular app. Avoid claiming that an app uses the entire System Data amount unless you have separate evidence.

Turn the inspection into a practical decision
Finding a large app is only the first step. Before changing anything, decide whether the app is needed, whether its data is important, and whether the space recovered would solve the problem you are actually experiencing.

Make a short priority list
- Record the largest Applications entries and their displayed sizes.
- Mark apps you no longer use, apps you use occasionally, and apps you must keep.
- Compare the potential space recovered with the free-space figure shown in Storage.
- Check whether the problem is really application capacity or a different category, such as System Data or personal files.
Separate app size from personal content
An application entry tells you about the storage macOS assigns to the app category. It does not automatically account for every document, project, media file, or other content created with that app. If your goal is to free a specific amount of space, identify the category that contains that space before moving or deleting anything.
Use external storage only as a follow-up option
Apple separately documents moving files to an external storage device as a way to free space. That is an optional cleanup step after inspection; an external drive is not required to check app sizes and does not make the Applications category easier to measure. Move only files you have identified and still need, and verify that you can access them from the external device before removing the original copy.

The Applications category is not visible
First confirm the macOS version and use the matching route. Ventura 13 and later place Storage under System Settings > General. Earlier versions place it under About This Mac. Looking for Applications in the wrong window is the most common navigation mistake.

An Info or More Info control is absent
Apple’s documentation describes an Info or More Info control when available. If your release does not show that control, use the category overview and any application entries that are displayed. Do not assume that a missing control means the Mac has no application data; it can reflect differences between macOS releases or the current Storage interface.

The totals do not match another view
Storage categories are classifications, not necessarily a folder-by-folder total that mirrors every other interface. Applications excludes system applications, while System Data contains material outside more specific categories. Different views can therefore show different groupings without one being automatically corrupt.
The numbers change after you free space
Apple says storage information updates automatically as space is freed and that category sizes can vary. Reopen or revisit Storage after the system has had time to recalculate. Evaluate the trend after the refresh rather than relying on the first number visible immediately after a change.
An app you expect is not listed
Check whether it is a system application, because Apple excludes system applications from the Applications category. Also remember that the Storage view is an overview and not a complete inventory of every file associated with every program. Absence from the displayed category does not establish that the software has no files anywhere on the Mac.
System Data is larger than Applications
This is possible because System Data is a broad, variable category. The category cannot be selected and deleted from its Storage entry. Return to the Applications details for app-specific inspection instead of treating System Data as a list of removable apps.
Limitations to keep in mind
- Version dependence: the navigation path changes at macOS Ventura 13.
- Category scope: Applications excludes system applications.
- Classification: the chart groups storage by categories and file types; it is not a byte-level inventory of every app-related file.
- Changing values: macOS can recalculate categories as space is freed, and Apple says category sizes vary.
- System Data: it is a general, system-managed category and cannot be directly deleted from its category entry.
- Cleanup is separate: moving files to external storage may free capacity, but it is not part of the checking procedure.
A quick checklist
- Identify whether the Mac runs Ventura 13 or later.
- Open System Settings > General > Storage on Ventura 13 or later, or About This Mac > Storage on an earlier release.
- Read the chart’s free-space figure and category breakdown.
- Open Applications and its Info or More Info control when available.
- Record the largest displayed application entries.
- Remember that system applications are excluded and that the category is not a complete inventory of every related file.
- Treat System Data as a separate, variable category that cannot be deleted from its category entry.
- If you need additional capacity, consider moving identified files to external storage only after deciding what you need to keep.
This process gives you a version-appropriate, built-in way to see which applications account for the most storage on your Mac and to distinguish that finding from broader categories such as System Data.
