The most reliable way to check whether a downloaded app is slowing your Android phone is to compare the phone in normal use with safe mode. Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. If lag, freezing or delayed response disappears there, Google says a downloaded app is likely involved. That test does not identify the exact app, so restart normally and remove recently installed apps one at a time, testing after each removal.
Before blaming an app, rule out basic conditions such as low free storage, missing system or app updates, a needed restart and a poor connection. The sequence below separates those causes and gives you a controlled way to narrow the suspect without deleting several apps blindly.
What the checks can—and cannot—tell you
Different checks answer different questions. A storage, update or connection check can reveal a general device condition without implicating any app. Safe mode answers whether downloaded apps are involved at all. Removing recent apps individually can then isolate a likely offender. Battery information can show which apps use substantial energy, but it is supporting evidence rather than a direct speed measurement.
| Check | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Restart, updates, storage and connection | Whether a common device or network condition may explain the slowdown | Which app is responsible |
| Safe-mode comparison | Whether the problem is likely related to a downloaded app | The exact app, or certainty that an app is the only cause |
| Remove recent apps one at a time | Which removed app appears connected to the symptom | That the app is the only possible cause in every situation |
| Battery-use information | Which apps are consuming substantial battery and may deserve investigation when drain is also present | That an app is slowing the phone; battery impact and speed are different measurements |
Use the checks in that order. Changing several things at once makes it impossible to know which change helped. Keep a short record of each test, including whether the phone was charging, whether Battery Saver was enabled, what network you used and which exact task you performed.

1. Describe the slowdown before changing anything
Write down what “slow” means on your phone. A few examples are useful:
- Apps take a long time to open or respond.
- The keyboard appears late or misses taps.
- Scrolling stutters across many apps or only one.
- The phone freezes, restarts or becomes hot.
- Online pages or cloud features are delayed while offline functions remain responsive.
- A particular app hangs while the rest of Android remains usable.
Note when the problem started, whether it began after installing or updating an app, and whether it affects one app or the whole device. Record a repeatable action, such as opening a specific screen, scrolling a list or typing a short message. This gives you a consistent symptom to retest after every step. If the symptom appears only occasionally, note the time and conditions rather than declaring a fix after one successful attempt.
2. Rule out basic phone conditions first
Restart the phone
Restart once before deeper diagnosis. A restart clears a temporary state and gives you a clean baseline. After it starts, reproduce the same task that was slow rather than judging the phone only from the home screen. If the issue disappears after one restart but returns later, record that pattern; it may indicate an intermittent condition rather than a particular app.

Check for available Android system updates and updates for installed apps, then retest. Update labels and locations differ by manufacturer, Android version and app store, so follow the entries shown on your phone. Update the operating system and apps before drawing conclusions from a safe-mode comparison, because an update may change the symptom. If the slowdown began immediately after an update, record that timing instead of assuming the update or an app is responsible. Do not update or remove several suspect apps in the middle of a controlled comparison unless you restart the test log afterward.
Check free storage
Open your phone’s Settings and find its storage information; the label and location vary by device. Google Android Help cautions: Your phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.
This is troubleshooting guidance, not proof that low storage or a particular app caused your problem. If free space is below that level, make room using your phone’s built-in storage tools, then restart and test again. Keep the before-and-after free-space figures in your notes. If the phone remains slow with substantially more space available, storage alone is less likely to explain the symptom, but it still does not identify an app.
Do not delete a suspect app merely to create space if you are trying to identify it. First record its name and why it is on the candidate list. Remove unneeded files or other clearly unnecessary content with the phone’s storage tools, then retest the original task.
Separate online slowness from phone slowness
If delays happen mainly when loading websites, synchronizing accounts or using other online features, check the connection as part of the diagnosis. A network problem can look like a slow app while the phone itself is responding normally. Compare an affected task with an offline task before removing software. If offline menus and locally stored content respond normally but online content stalls, keep the connection condition in your record and do not treat the result as evidence against an app until you have repeated the test under comparable network conditions.

3. Use safe mode as the broad app test
What safe mode does
Safe mode starts Android with downloaded apps temporarily turned off. It is a comparison environment, not a permanent operating mode and not an app scanner. Because those apps are inactive, the result helps separate downloaded-app involvement from problems that remain when they are unavailable. Core Android functions and some preinstalled software remain available, but features supplied by downloaded apps may not work during the test.
How to enter and leave it
Safe-mode controls differ among manufacturers and models. Use the instructions supplied for your exact phone rather than applying a universal button sequence. The phone normally displays an on-screen indication when safe mode is active. To leave safe mode, use the manufacturer’s normal restart procedure; do not begin deleting apps while still in the test environment. If the phone does not clearly indicate that safe mode is active, stop and verify the status with the device maker’s instructions before interpreting the result.

Run a fair comparison
- Restart into safe mode using your manufacturer’s instructions.
- Repeat the same actions that caused the slowdown: open the relevant feature, scroll, type and perform the task long enough to observe the behavior.
- Compare response, freezing and delays with the baseline you recorded.
- Restart normally when the comparison is complete.
Keep the test focused on the symptom. A downloaded app being unavailable may remove features you normally use, so judge speed only on functions that safe mode still permits. Use the same connection where possible, and note any setting that changed between tests. A quick glance at the home screen is not enough; reproduce the action that originally exposed the problem.
Interpret the result correctly
- The problem improves or disappears: Google says a downloaded app is likely involved. Safe mode does not tell you which app, and “likely” is not certainty. More than one app or another condition could still contribute.
- The problem remains: shift attention to storage, updates, connection conditions, Android itself or hardware and support options. Do not keep deleting downloaded apps solely because the phone is slow in ordinary use.
- The result is unclear: repeat the same task after returning to normal mode. Inconsistent symptoms can come from changing network conditions or a problem that is not continuously active. Make the normal-mode and safe-mode comparisons as similar as possible before deciding.
Safe mode is especially useful when the whole phone feels sluggish, freezes across several apps or became unreliable after installing software. It is less conclusive when the only symptom requires a downloaded app that cannot run in safe mode; in that situation, document the limitation and use the one-at-a-time removal test after returning to normal mode.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Narrow the suspect by removing recent apps
When safe mode improves the phone, start with apps installed or updated near the time the slowdown began. Google’s guidance recommends an incremental approach: remove one app, test, then continue only if the problem remains. “Recent” is a practical starting point, not a guarantee that an older app cannot be involved.
- Restart the phone normally.
- Make a list of recently downloaded or updated apps and any apps you stopped during diagnosis.
- Remove one recent app using the uninstall control shown in your phone’s app-management screen.
- Reproduce the original symptom using the same task and conditions.
- Record whether the symptom changed before removing another app.
- Continue one app at a time until the slowdown stops or you have tested the plausible recent apps.
Removing one item at a time is slower than deleting several, but it preserves the evidence. If an app was not the cause, Google says you can reinstall it. Keep your list so you do not lose track of what was removed and so you can restore only apps that the tests did not implicate. If an app contains data that is not synchronized, check what the uninstall action may remove and preserve anything important before proceeding.
What counts as a strong indication
The strongest practical indication is a repeatable pattern: the phone slows in normal mode, improves in safe mode, and remains improved after one specific app is removed and the same task is retested. That pattern supports treating the app as a likely cause. It still does not prove that no other condition contributed, especially if more than one app was changed, storage was also altered or the symptom is intermittent.
If removing an app makes no difference, reinstalling it later is reasonable when you need it and when the app was not implicated by the test. Reinstall only after recording the result. If removing an app helps once but the symptom returns, repeat the original task and check whether another app, a network condition or changing storage level also changed.
What to do with the likely app
Leave the suspected app uninstalled while you confirm that normal phone use remains stable. If you need the app, reinstall it only after documenting the result; if the slowdown returns, you have a useful reproducible signal for the app’s developer, your device manufacturer or your carrier. Avoid reinstalling several removed apps together, because that destroys the one-change-at-a-time comparison. Keep the app’s name, version if visible, installation timing and the exact symptom in your notes when reporting it.
5. Use battery information as supporting evidence, not a speed meter
Battery statistics can help when the phone is both slow and losing battery unusually quickly. Android support recommends checking app battery use and restricting apps with high battery use. The exact screen and controls vary by device, so use the battery section shown in Settings. A high-use entry can help you prioritize which app to review, particularly if its activity matches the time of the slowdown.
High battery use alone does not prove that an app is slowing the phone. Battery consumption measures energy impact, while safe mode and controlled removal test downloaded-app involvement in the slowdown itself. An app can use substantial battery without producing visible lag, and a slow phone may have no single app at the top of the battery list. Treat battery information as a clue, not a diagnosis.

Account for Battery Saver
Battery Saver can limit background activity. Those limits may cause delays in some features or apps, so note whether Battery Saver is enabled when you observe the problem. Compare like with like: if one test is performed with Battery Saver on and another with it off, the results are harder to interpret. If you change the setting, repeat the same task and record the change rather than attributing the difference automatically to an app.
Pixel-specific diagnostics
Google’s Pixel guidance says Battery diagnostics is available on Pixel 6 and later. Do not assume that feature or its exact settings path exists on other Android phones. On a non-Pixel device, use the battery-use information and controls provided by that manufacturer. Even on a supported Pixel, treat the diagnostic information as battery evidence and continue using safe mode and one-at-a-time removal for a speed investigation.
6. A practical decision path
- Is the delay mainly online? Check the connection before treating it as an app-speed problem.
- Is free storage below Google’s 10% troubleshooting threshold? Free space, restart and retest before removing apps.
- Are Android and app updates available? Install them, then reproduce the symptom and note whether its timing changed.
- Does the problem disappear in safe mode? If yes, a downloaded app is likely involved; if no, investigate non-app causes and seek device-specific help.
- Did a recent app installation or update precede the problem? Remove that app first, then retest.
- Did one removal produce a repeatable improvement? Keep the app removed while you confirm stability, and reinstall only if you need to test it again.
- Are battery drain and slowness occurring together? Use battery statistics to prioritize investigation, while keeping the two diagnoses separate.
Common mistakes that produce misleading results
Deleting several apps at once
You may make the phone faster, but you will not know which change mattered. Restore a controlled process by reinstalling only apps you need, then test future removals individually.
Assuming safe mode names the culprit
Safe mode only shows that a downloaded app is likely involved when the symptom clears. The individual-app test is still required.
Confusing network delay with app delay
A slow connection can delay an otherwise healthy app. Include an offline comparison before changing installed software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTreating the 10% figure as a guarantee
Google presents less than 10% free storage as a point at which a phone can start having issues. It is not a guarantee that storage is the cause, nor a finding that a specific app is responsible.
Ignoring Battery Saver
Background limits can change how quickly some features respond. Record the setting during each comparison.
Using another phone’s safe-mode instructions
Safe-mode entry and exit differ by model. A button sequence for one manufacturer may not work on yours; use the instructions for your exact device.
Calling a single successful test a fix
A temporary improvement can result from a restart, a changing connection or an intermittent condition. Repeat the same task after the suspected app is removed and again after a normal restart before concluding that the result is stable.

When app checks do not solve the problem
If the slowdown persists in safe mode, or remains after recent apps are tested, stop treating downloaded apps as the default explanation. Recheck storage, updates, restart status and connection conditions. Then contact the device manufacturer or carrier, which Google directs users to when general troubleshooting does not resolve the issue. Provide your test log: the model, Android version if known, free-storage level, safe-mode result, apps removed, Battery Saver state and the exact symptom.
A factory reset is a late-stage recovery action, not an initial app-identification method. Google warns that it removes data and apps. If support recommends it, back up the data you need first and understand what will be erased before confirming the reset. A reset should not be used merely to avoid identifying a suspect app, because it removes the evidence and requires you to restore software afterward.
What diagnostic sharing does—and does not—do
Android’s usage-and-diagnostics sharing controls concern information that may be sent to Google about device use and performance. They are not a local tool that identifies which installed app is slowing your phone. For this problem, the safe-mode comparison and one-at-a-time removal process provide the actionable evidence. You can review those sharing controls separately from the troubleshooting process; changing them will not substitute for reproducing the slowdown.
Frequently asked questions
Does safe mode tell me exactly which app is slow?
No. Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. If the symptom clears, Google says a downloaded app is likely involved, but you must restart normally and remove recent apps one by one to narrow the suspect.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What if my phone is still slow in safe mode?
Look beyond downloaded apps. Recheck storage, updates, restart status and connection conditions, then seek help from the phone manufacturer or carrier. Persistent safe-mode slowness is not a reason to keep uninstalling apps at random.
Should I remove every recently installed app?
Remove one at a time and retest after each removal. Start with apps installed or updated near the beginning of the problem. This preserves evidence and lets you reinstall an app that the test did not implicate.
Can high battery use prove an app is slowing Android?
No. Battery use measures energy impact, not phone speed directly. It is useful supporting evidence when battery drain and lag occur together, but safe mode and controlled removal are the relevant speed checks.
Why does my phone behave differently when Battery Saver is on?
Battery Saver can limit background activity, which may delay some features or apps. Record whether it is enabled and compare tests under the same setting.

Are safe-mode instructions the same on every Android phone?
No. Entry and exit procedures vary by manufacturer and model. Use the instructions for your exact device instead of copying a button sequence from another phone.
Bottom line
Start with a restart, Android and app updates, free-storage and connection checks. Then run the same task in manufacturer-specific safe mode. Improvement there makes a downloaded app likely, but not identified; restart normally and remove recent apps one by one until a repeatable change points to a likely culprit. Use battery statistics only as supporting evidence, keep Battery Saver settings consistent, and seek manufacturer or carrier help when the problem remains in safe mode.
