On your Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage, choose View by apps, and tap an app to inspect its share of battery use and available background-usage controls. If the app list does not explain the drain, switch to View by systems. Pixel 6 and later also include Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly.
The percentages are clues about battery use during the period shown, not automatic proof that the largest entry is defective. Read the chart’s time window, compare app and system views, and account for temporary drain after updates or a recent setup before restricting an app.
Find the battery-use list
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery usage.
- Select View by apps. Pixel lists apps that used battery during the period represented by the chart.
- Tap an app to open its details. The details page shows that app’s battery use and, where the control is available, Allow background usage.
This is the built-in route for answering “which apps are draining my Pixel battery?” It does not require a separate battery-monitoring app or a subscription. The list is useful on both newer and older Pixels, although exact labels and the arrangement of controls can vary with Android and Pixel software updates.
Read the chart before judging an app
Google’s battery-use chart represents the battery level since the last full charge. Start by identifying that interval. A list collected over several hours of active use tells a different story from one collected overnight, when the phone was mostly idle. If you charged the phone partway through the day, the displayed period and percentages may not represent a full day of behavior.

The listed values can add up to less than or more than 100% because the displayed figures are rounded. Treat the screen as a breakdown of use over that interval, not as a laboratory measurement of battery capacity. A difference of a percentage point or two is not evidence that one app suddenly became inefficient.
A high percentage identifies an app worth investigating, but it does not by itself prove that the app caused every symptom you are seeing. An app can be high because you actively used it for a long time, because it performed background work, or because the phone was already experiencing system-level activity. Check the observation period and the system category before deciding what to change. Google describes the battery-use display and its app/system views in its battery-drain guidance and battery-level guidance.
Inspect an individual app
After you tap an app in View by apps, use the details page to separate normal foreground use from work occurring while the app is not open. Look at the app’s share alongside the times you remember using it. For example, a navigation app that was open with the screen on for an hour can reasonably rank above an app that was never opened. That ranking alone does not call for a restriction.

Check whether background use is involved
Look for Allow background usage. If the app has consumed substantial battery while you were not actively using it, background activity is a plausible contributor. The label and available choices can depend on the app and Pixel software. Changing the allowance can delay notifications, synchronization, location updates, uploads, backups, or other expected functions, so make the change only when the trade-off is acceptable.
Background use is not automatically harmful. Messaging, email, calendars, health trackers, alarms, device-finding tools, and backup services often need limited background work to do what you expect. The useful question is whether the amount and timing of activity fit the app’s job. An overnight social-media or shopping app that remains prominent while you do not use it is a stronger candidate for testing than an alarm or security app with a similar percentage.
Match the entry to your actual use
An app at the top is not necessarily misbehaving. Video playback, navigation, games, camera processing, hotspot use, and long screen-on sessions can legitimately place an app high in the list. Compare the entry with when you used the phone and with the chart’s period. An app that is high during heavy use is a different case from one that keeps appearing high when the phone is idle.
Consider repeated patterns rather than one snapshot. If an app appears high after every normal day, including days when you barely opened it, record that pattern. If it is high only after a long video call or a large photo upload, the result may simply describe that activity. Rechecking the next comparable interval prevents a one-time event from driving an unnecessary change.

Record a baseline before changing settings
Note the app name, its displayed share, and the time period. Also note whether the phone was charging, idle, on mobile data, using navigation, or recently updated. Then use the phone normally for a charge cycle or the next interval shown by the page. A before-and-after observation is more useful than changing several apps at once, because simultaneous changes make it difficult to identify which setting affected battery life or app behavior.
Use View by systems when no app explains the drain
On the battery-use page, switch from View by apps to View by systems. The two views answer different questions:
| View | What it shows | When to use it | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| View by apps | Battery use attributed to individual apps | When you want to identify a user-installed or built-in app associated with the drain | Use the entry as an investigation lead; compare it with your activity and its background-usage setting |
| View by systems | Battery use attributed to system components | When no single app accounts for the pattern, or when the phone drains while idle | Look for a system category that warrants further troubleshooting rather than blaming an app by default |
Comparing the same observation period in both views helps distinguish an app-heavy pattern from one dominated by the operating system or another device function. A system entry can explain why several apps seem ordinary even though the phone loses charge quickly. Conversely, a large app entry with modest system use points you back to that app’s activity and background allowance.
Do not try to force every system item to equal a familiar app. System categories can represent work shared by the operating system, radios, or device functions, so they may not map neatly to one icon in your app drawer. Use the category as a direction for further troubleshooting and preserve the timing details if you need Google support.

Pixel 6 and newer models have an additional diagnostic route:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery diagnostics.
- Choose Battery draining too quickly.
This diagnostic is an extra way to investigate an unusual drain; it is not required to view the app list. If you do not see the menu, check your model eligibility: Google documents this path for Pixel 6 and later. The current eligibility and troubleshooting flow are listed in Google’s Pixel battery-issues help.
Run the diagnostic after confirming that the problem is current, rather than immediately after a single demanding task. Keep the phone’s model and software state in mind, because menus differ by generation. A diagnostic result supplements the usage list; it does not replace checking which apps were active or comparing the system view.

Decide what to do about a high-use app
Leave battery optimization enabled by default
Google recommends keeping battery optimization on. Optimization limits unnecessary background work while allowing the system to manage apps according to their role. Turning it off globally can increase background activity and shorten runtime, so do not disable it merely because an app appears near the top of the list.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Restrict background use selectively
If an app is using battery while idle and you can accept delayed or reduced background behavior, adjust its available background-usage control on the app’s battery details page. Make one targeted change, then observe the next battery-use interval. Apps that provide messaging, alarms, navigation, health tracking, backups, or device-management functions may rely on background activity; restricting them can change how they work.
Before restricting an app, list the functions you expect from it. A delayed work notification may be acceptable for a game but not for a calendar, security alert, or medical reminder. If a restriction solves the drain but breaks a needed function, restore the previous setting and look for an in-app sync, location, or notification option instead.
Use force stop only as a targeted test
Force-stopping is not available for every app. Google warns that force-stopping some essential apps or services can prevent the phone from working correctly. Do not force-stop everything as a general battery fix. If a specific nonessential app is repeatedly active when it should be idle, a force stop can be a temporary troubleshooting step, followed by normal use and observation. If the problem returns, update or troubleshoot that app rather than repeatedly stopping system components. Google’s cautions appear in its Pixel battery-drain instructions.
Do not remove an app solely because it ranks first
First confirm that the entry is inconsistent with your use and that the app view, system view, and timing all point in the same direction. If the app was used heavily on-screen, its high share may be expected. If it is active in the background, a restriction or app-specific fix may be appropriate. This distinction prevents you from breaking a needed function while chasing a normal usage pattern.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Account for updates, setup, and resets
Battery behavior can change temporarily after a software update because the Pixel may download and optimize software. Google also says battery optimization after a new setup or factory reset can take a few weeks to reach its full effect. A newly configured phone therefore can show more drain than it will later.
That does not mean every post-update drain is harmless. Note the update or setup date, monitor comparable intervals, and look for whether the phone is idle when the charge falls. Google recommends seeking help if unusual drain continues after a few days. During that period, keep notes about when the drain occurs, whether the phone is idle or in use, and what appears in both battery views. Those details make support troubleshooting more precise. See Google’s battery-life guidance for the update and optimization qualification.

Use the newer personalized summary when available
Google documents a personalized battery-usage summary for Pixel 10 and later, including Pixel Fold models. It requires the latest version of AI Core, so availability depends on the phone model and installed software. Treat this summary as an optional, model-specific aid; the standard Battery usage page and its app/system views remain the general inspection route.
If your Pixel is older than the supported generation, or the summary is absent, that does not mean battery reporting is broken. Use View by apps, View by systems, and, on Pixel 6 and later, Battery diagnostics. Google describes the personalized-summary requirement in its battery-level help.

Follow this order when the phone loses charge faster than expected:
- Check the period. Open Battery usage and identify the interval represented by the chart since the last full charge.
- Start with apps. In View by apps, look for an entry that does not match your active use or that remains prominent during idle time.
- Inspect details. Tap the app and review its battery information and, if shown, Allow background usage.
- Compare systems. Switch to View by systems if no app accounts for the pattern or the drain appears device-wide.
- Run diagnostics when eligible. On Pixel 6 and later, use Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly.
- Consider timing. If the phone was updated, newly set up, or factory-reset, allow for temporary optimization activity before making aggressive changes.
- Make one targeted adjustment. Keep optimization enabled; restrict background use or test a force stop only for a specific, nonessential app whose behavior supports that decision.
- Recheck. Look at the next comparable battery interval. If the unusual drain persists for more than a few days, use Google’s support route rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
Common mistakes that produce misleading conclusions
- Confusing screen time with background drain: a heavily used app can legitimately lead the list.
- Reading rounded values as exact measurements: the displayed percentages may not total 100%.
- Ignoring system entries: an app-only review can miss a system component involved in the drain.
- Changing every app at once: multiple restrictions hide which change helped and can disrupt notifications or synchronization.
- Disabling optimization globally: this removes a protection Google recommends leaving enabled.
- Force-stopping essential services: Google warns that some stops can make the phone work incorrectly, and the option is unavailable for some apps.
- Judging a freshly updated or reset phone too soon: optimization can temporarily increase battery use and may take a few weeks after setup or reset.
- Assuming every Pixel has the same diagnostic menus: the documented diagnostic path begins with Pixel 6, while the personalized summary starts with Pixel 10 and requires the latest AI Core.
- Comparing unlike intervals: a weekend of navigation cannot be fairly compared with an idle weekday night.
- Ignoring expected background work: restricting alarms, backups, or security functions can create a new problem while solving the old one.
When the app list is not enough
The battery page is designed to show where charge was used, not to certify a hardware fault or identify every possible cause of rapid discharge. If both app and system views fail to explain an ongoing problem, preserve the observations you made, run the eligible diagnostic, and consult Google’s Pixel battery support. Include the Pixel model, whether it was recently updated or reset, the interval shown on the chart, and the entries that remained high while the phone was idle. That information is more actionable than a single percentage copied from the list.
Support is especially appropriate when the drain remains unusual after a few days, the phone becomes unexpectedly warm while idle, or ordinary use no longer matches the pattern shown in Battery usage. Do not infer a failing battery solely from one app ranking; let the repeated pattern, system view, and diagnostic results guide the next step.
For the official procedures and current menu names, consult Google’s Fix battery drain problem, Check battery level, Fix issues with your Pixel phone battery, and Get the most life from your Pixel phone battery pages.

What if no app appears responsible for the drain?
On the Battery usage page, switch to View by systems. System components can account for an idle or device-wide pattern that is not obvious in the app list.
Does the app with the highest percentage prove it is faulty?
No. The percentage describes battery use during the displayed interval and is rounded. Heavy foreground use can legitimately put an app first, so compare the timing, background activity, and system view.
Can I run a built-in battery test?
On Pixel 6 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly. This is an additional diagnostic path, not a requirement for viewing app usage.
Should I turn off battery optimization for a high-use app?
Google recommends leaving battery optimization enabled. If an app is active while idle, use its specific background-usage control only when you accept possible delays to notifications, synchronization, location, or other functions.
Why did my Pixel battery get worse after an update or reset?
Google says drain can be temporarily higher while the phone downloads and optimizes software. After a new setup or factory reset, optimization can take a few weeks; seek help if unusual drain remains after a few days.
Which Pixels have the personalized battery summary?
Google documents the newer summary for Pixel 10 and later, including Fold models, and it requires the latest AI Core. Older Pixels should use the standard app and system views.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps to find likely contributors, inspect background use, and then compare the same interval in View by systems. Pixel 6 and later add Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly. Treat rankings as clues, keep optimization enabled, make one targeted change at a time, and allow for temporary drain after updates or setup before concluding that an app or battery is failing.
