To see what is filling a Samsung Galaxy phone, check Settings > Battery and device care > Storage for storage by category, then open Settings > Apps and inspect an app’s Storage page to check its individual footprint. The first view helps you find large files; the second shows app space, data, and cache. Menu names and screens vary by model and software version.
Check storage by category and find large files
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery and device care or Device care, depending on your phone’s software.
- Tap Storage.
- Review the used and available space and the listed categories. Tap a category, such as Images, Videos, Audio files, or Documents, to inspect its contents.
- If your phone offers them, review Trash, duplicate files, unused apps, or large files. Check what each item contains before deleting it.
This view organizes storage by content category; it is not necessarily a ranked list of apps. Samsung notes that menu names, settings, and screen layouts can vary by model and software version. See Samsung’s Galaxy storage guidance.
Check which apps use the most space
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select an app, or use search to find it.
- Tap Storage and note the space used, including any displayed data and cache amounts.
- Repeat for apps you suspect are large, then compare the figures.
The documented route is to check apps one at a time; Samsung’s guidance does not establish a universal ranked “largest apps” list across Galaxy models. The menu can vary. See Samsung’s app-management instructions.

Samsung says “Other” can include installed-app data, system files, cached data, and temporary files that do not appear in the other categories. It is not necessarily a collection of personal files, and Samsung says the category cannot be deleted directly. Its UK guidance, updated 4 August 2026, describes checking individual apps under Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage and clearing cache or data as possible ways to reclaim some space.

On some software versions, an information icon beside Apps in the Storage view may open a setting that distinguishes My Files from Apps/Other. This control is version-dependent, so it may not appear on your phone.
Choose cleanup actions carefully
Clear cache for a narrower cleanup
Cache consists of temporary app files. If an app is using a surprising amount of space, open its Storage page and consider Clear cache. This is narrower than resetting the app, though removing files used frequently may make the app run more slowly while it rebuilds them.

Clear data only if you accept an app reset
Clear data resets the app to its defaults and removes personal settings or data saved in that app. Before using it, confirm that you know what the app stores locally and whether important content is synced or backed up. Some system apps may not allow data clearing. Samsung explains the distinction in its app-management guidance.

Trash or recycle-bin contents, duplicates, and large files may be candidates for deletion, but inspect them first rather than clearing a category blindly. On supported models, moving files to an SD card is another option after identifying what is taking space; SD-card support depends on the exact phone model. These are follow-up cleanup choices, not necessary steps to check current storage use. Samsung’s free-storage guidance includes examples of file cleanup and legacy Device care naming.
