To see which apps and phone features are consuming power, open Settings > Device care (or Battery and device care) > Battery > View details. The resulting screen lists battery use by app and feature. On some Galaxy phones, especially with older software, the final option is called Battery usage instead.
Samsung changes menu names and layouts by Galaxy model, Android version, and software release. If you do not see the exact wording above, enter the Battery section in Device care and look for the screen that lists usage by app.
Find the battery-use list
The battery-use list is part of Samsung’s built-in Settings app; you do not need a battery-monitoring app or accessory. It records how the phone’s charge has been used during the period shown on the screen, separating individual apps from system features where the software reports them.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Device care or Battery and device care.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap View details.
- Review the apps and features listed, along with the time period and battery information displayed on your phone.
If View details is not present, stay in the Battery section and look for Battery usage. Samsung’s older support instructions use that label for the page showing which apps have used battery.

Why your menu may look different
Samsung says that names, paths, and screen layouts can vary by device model and software or app version. A Galaxy phone running an older Android release may place the list directly under Device care > Battery > Battery usage, while a newer interface may use Battery and device care > Battery > View details. The difference is a menu-label change, not a separate kind of battery measurement.

Do not expect both labels to appear on the same phone. If searching Settings for “battery usage” or “view details” does not help, open Device care first and select its Battery tile; Samsung’s layout can move the entry without removing the information.
Read the results before changing anything
The list answers “Which apps are using my battery?” by showing the entries that consumed power during the displayed period. First check the date or time range and any percentage or usage indicator beside an entry. A high position means the app or feature accounted for more of the recorded use in that period; it does not, by itself, prove that the app is defective.

Separate an app from a phone feature
Entries can include ordinary apps as well as built-in functions. An app may be active because you opened it, because it performed background work, or because another feature used it. A feature entry can reflect work performed by the operating system or a hardware-related function. Use the list to decide what deserves investigation, not as a diagnosis on its own.
Consider what the phone was doing
Interpret an entry in context. A navigation, video, camera, gaming, or streaming app can reasonably appear near the top after an intensive session. A messaging, calendar, or other utility app may appear because it checked for data in the background. The list tells you where recorded power went; it does not explain every reason an app was active.
Do not confuse a usage breakdown with remaining-time estimates
Samsung also provides an estimate of remaining battery power and time in Battery and device care > Battery. That estimate is different from the app-and-feature breakdown. Samsung Singapore notes that the remaining-time estimate changes with settings and operating conditions, so it should not be treated as a measurement of one app’s consumption or as a promise of how long the phone will last.
What to do when one app is high on the list
Use the entry to ask a specific question: was the app expected to be active, or is it doing work you do not need? Compare the period shown with your own use before taking action.
When the result is expected
If you spent substantial time in an app, its position may simply reflect that use. You can leave it unchanged, close your session normally, or reduce the activity that caused the high reading. A single high entry is not proof of a fault.

When background activity is unnecessary
Samsung provides Background usage limits in the Battery settings. These controls let you put unused apps to sleep, review sleeping apps, review deep sleeping apps, and maintain a list of apps that should never sleep. The exact controls and their placement can vary with the Galaxy model and software version.
- Open Settings.
- Open Device care or Battery and device care.
- Tap Battery.
- Open Background usage limits.
- Choose the relevant list, such as sleeping apps, deep sleeping apps, or never sleeping apps, and add or remove the app according to the result you observed.
These settings are management choices, not automatic repairs. Apply them only after deciding what the app needs to do when you are not using it.
Sleeping apps: lower background activity with occasional exceptions
Samsung Canada explains that a sleeping app may occasionally run in the background. This can reduce activity without completely preventing it, but notifications or updates may be delayed. Sleeping is therefore more suitable for an app you rarely need immediately than for an app whose alerts must arrive promptly.
Deep sleeping apps: strongest restriction
A deep sleeping app does not run in the background. It works when you open it, and Samsung says updates or notifications are received only when the app is opened. This can be appropriate for an app you use infrequently and do not expect to alert you, but it is a poor choice for time-sensitive messaging, reminders, security alerts, or other notifications you rely on.
Never sleeping apps: continuity at a battery cost
The never-sleeping list is intended for apps that must continue background work. Keeping an app there can preserve updates and notifications, but it also permits more background activity. Use it selectively rather than placing every frequently used app on the list.
Choose the right setting for the notification you need
Before putting an app to sleep, identify whether you need it to notify you without being opened. This simple check prevents a battery adjustment from silently breaking an important workflow.
- Immediate alerts required: avoid deep sleeping; consider leaving the app active or using a less restrictive option.
- Occasional updates are acceptable: sleeping may be a reasonable compromise, with the possibility of delayed notifications.
- No background work needed: deep sleeping can prevent background activity until you open the app.
- Background operation is essential: review whether the app belongs in never sleeping, and accept the associated battery use.
Samsung’s guidance specifically warns that restricting background activity can delay app updates or notifications. Tell anyone who depends on the phone for alerts before making a restrictive change.

A battery-use page is evidence about recorded consumption, not a complete troubleshooting report. If no single app stands out, work through the information on the screen rather than assuming the phone or an app is malfunctioning.

Check the period and refresh your observation
Confirm the period represented by the list. A reading taken immediately after intensive use may look different from one taken after a normal day. Note what you used, then check the list again after a comparable period. This gives you a more useful comparison than reacting to one short interval.
Look for features as well as apps
If the largest entry is a phone feature rather than an app, investigate the feature’s use in the same period. The list is designed to include both categories, so focusing only on app names can miss the item that accounts for the recorded activity.
Use background limits carefully
If an app is active when you are not using it, Background usage limits provide a controlled experiment: apply an appropriate sleeping option, then observe whether the behavior and notifications match your needs. Do not apply deep sleep to every high-use app at once, because you will not know which change affected an alert or update.

If the remaining-time estimate changes, that does not necessarily mean a particular app suddenly became responsible. Samsung notes that estimates vary with settings and operating conditions. Use the usage list for relative activity and the remaining-time display for a changing forecast.
When the menu item is missing
Menu availability depends on model and software. Try these checks without assuming that your phone uses the same labels as Samsung’s examples.
- Open the full Settings list and search for Device care, Battery and device care, or Battery.
- Open the Battery page inside Device care rather than looking only for a top-level Battery menu.
- Look for both View details and Battery usage; one may be used by your software version.
- Read the labels on your own screen before following instructions written for another Galaxy model.
If none of those entries exists, Samsung’s documentation does not establish one universal path for every Galaxy phone. The practical rule is to locate the Battery section within Device care and find its app or feature usage view.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming a high percentage proves a fault
The list reports use during a selected period. It does not, by itself, establish that an app is defective. Compare the entry with what you actually did on the phone before restricting it.
Deep sleeping an app that supplies alerts
Deep sleeping prevents background operation and postpones updates or notifications until the app is opened. That behavior is intentional, so choose it only when delayed alerts are acceptable.

Confusing “remaining time” with “used by app”
A forecast of remaining charge is not an app-by-app accounting. Use the detailed view to investigate usage and treat the forecast as a variable estimate affected by settings and operating conditions.
Following an old path word for word
Older instructions may say Battery usage, while newer documentation says View details. Search within the Battery page for either label instead of concluding that your phone lacks the feature.
A practical decision sequence
- Open the Battery usage detail screen using the label available on your phone.
- Confirm the period represented and identify the highest app and feature entries.
- Match each entry to your actual use during that period.
- Leave expected foreground use alone unless you have another reason to change it.
- For unnecessary background activity, open Background usage limits.
- Choose sleeping only when occasional background activity and delayed alerts are acceptable.
- Choose deep sleeping only when the app can wait until you open it.
- Use never sleeping sparingly for apps that must maintain background operation.
- Observe the phone again over a comparable period and verify that required notifications still arrive.
This process keeps the decision tied to the evidence on your Galaxy phone and makes the notification trade-off explicit.
What Samsung’s labels mean in practice
Samsung’s Canada support wording is “Check battery usage by app and feature.” Its UK guidance uses the older “Battery usage” label and discusses Android-version variation. Samsung’s Singapore guidance covers remaining-charge and time estimates rather than replacing the detailed usage list. Together, these labels describe related Battery settings, but they are not interchangeable screens: one identifies recorded app and feature use, while the other forecasts remaining time.

Use the list as a comparison tool rather than a one-time verdict. After noting the highest entries, repeat the check after a similar period of use. For example, compare an ordinary day with another ordinary day, not a streaming-heavy evening with a mostly idle day. Keep the displayed period in mind each time, because changing that period changes what the ranking represents.
When the same app remains high across comparable periods and you were not actively using it, background limits are worth examining. When the ranking changes with what you did, the result may simply reflect normal use. This approach avoids treating a temporary foreground session as evidence of a permanent problem.
Undo a restriction when it causes a problem
Sleeping categories are reversible. Return to Background usage limits, open the relevant sleeping, deep sleeping, or never sleeping list, and remove or reclassify the app. Recheck the app after changing its category, especially if notifications or updates were delayed. The correct setting is the least restrictive one that provides the background behavior you actually need.
Do not assume that moving an app to never sleeping is always better. It allows continued background work and can increase battery use. Likewise, do not assume deep sleeping is harmless simply because the app is not used often; an infrequent app may still provide an alert you consider important.

A quick checklist before you change anything
- Did you open the app or feature during the period shown?
- Is the displayed period long enough to represent your normal use?
- Do you need this app to update or notify you while closed?
- Would delayed notifications be acceptable?
- Are you changing one app at a time so you can observe the result?
- Will you check the list and notifications again after the change?
Answering these questions turns the Battery page into a practical diagnostic aid while preserving the alerts and updates that matter.
