To find which PlayStation account bought a PS5 game showing a padlock, check Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Transaction History for every account that could have purchased it. Select an appropriate date range and search for the game title. On the console, only the family manager can view family members’ transaction history.
The padlock indicates a possible license or entitlement problem; it does not identify the purchasing account by itself. A game can also be accessible through another user’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting or through PlayStation Plus rather than an individual purchase.
What the padlock tells you—and what it does not
A padlock beside a PS5 game means the console cannot currently validate the license or entitlement needed to launch it. It does not prove that somebody else bought the game, and it does not reveal which account owns it. PlayStation’s troubleshooting process starts by signing in to the account used to buy the game and checking that account’s transaction history.

- Individual purchase: One PlayStation account bought the game. That account’s transaction history should contain the transaction.
- Shared access: Another account bought the game and made it available on the console through PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Subscription entitlement: The game was claimed or downloaded through PlayStation Plus. Access can depend on an active subscription or on the title still being in the applicable catalog.
Checking the purchase account first prevents you from treating a shared or subscription entitlement as a missing purchase.
Check the transaction history on the PS5
1. Open the account’s transaction history
- Sign in to the PS5 user account you want to investigate.
- Open Settings from the home screen.
- Go to Users and Accounts.
- Select Account.
- Open Payment and Subscriptions.
- Select Transaction History.
This is the console path for reviewing purchases and other account transactions. Repeat it for each account associated with the PS5 when you do not know which user obtained the game.
2. Select a useful date range
Choose a date range broad enough to include when the game may have been purchased. PlayStation’s account-management instructions say the displayed transaction history defaults to the past two years. If the game is older, select a longer or otherwise suitable range rather than assuming that an absent recent entry means the account never owned it.
Look for the exact game title in the resulting list. Pay attention to the transaction type and date, because a related add-on, subscription charge, or separate edition is not necessarily the base game license you are trying to verify.
3. Check every plausible account
If the title is not listed, sign out or switch users and repeat the same process for every account used on the console. This includes adult accounts, child accounts and any account that previously used the PS5. PlayStation specifically recommends checking the transaction history of each account associated with a console when purchased or voucher content cannot be found.
For family accounts, the console’s transaction-history view has an important restriction: only the family manager can view family members’ transaction history. A child or other family member may therefore be unable to confirm the purchase from their own console profile even if that account is the one involved.

What to do when the game is not in the history
Do not infer ownership from the padlock
An absent transaction can have several explanations. The game may belong to another account, may have been obtained through PlayStation Plus, or may not be part of the account’s entitlement at all. The padlock alone cannot distinguish these cases.

Repeat the search with the right account and period
- Verify that you are signed in to the intended PlayStation Network account, not merely a different local user with a similar name.
- Expand the date range beyond the default two-year display when the purchase could be older.
- Search the other accounts that have used the console.
- If a family account is involved, ask the family manager to perform the console check.
These checks establish whether the account itself has a recorded transaction. They do not, by themselves, prove that the game is currently playable; current access can still depend on sharing, subscription status, license validation and service availability.
Distinguish a purchase from shared and subscription access

The account that can launch a game is not always the account that paid for it. Use the history check to identify a direct purchase, then check the sharing or subscription conditions when the transaction is on another account or is absent from all purchase histories.
Check PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play
If another user bought the game, that user may be able to make it playable for other profiles by enabling Console Sharing and Offline Play. PlayStation’s support instructions are available at How to turn on PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play.
How the setting affects your diagnosis
Console Sharing and Offline Play is an access mechanism, not a transfer of ownership. The purchasing account remains the account whose transaction history contains the purchase. Other users may be able to play eligible content on the PS5 when the purchasing user has enabled the feature.

What to confirm with the purchasing user
- They can sign in to the account that appears to own the game.
- That account still shows the game as purchased.
- Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on the PS5 in question.
- The game is an eligible digital entitlement rather than a title that requires a separate disc or unavailable benefit.
Do not delete the purchasing account while diagnosing the issue. The account’s sign-in and sharing setting are the evidence needed to separate an ownership problem from a sharing configuration problem.
Check whether PlayStation Plus supplied the game
A game obtained through PlayStation Plus may not appear as a normal one-time purchase in the way you expect. Check the account’s PlayStation Plus status and determine how the title was offered.
Monthly or claimed benefit
If the game was claimed as a PlayStation Plus benefit, access generally depends on the associated subscription remaining active. Confirm that the account that claimed the game still has the required PlayStation Plus subscription.
Catalog title
If the game came from a PlayStation Plus catalog, verify that the title is still included in the catalog available to that subscription. A catalog game can become unavailable even when it was previously downloadable, so an expired catalog listing is different from a missing individual purchase.
PlayStation includes subscription and catalog availability among the checks for a locked game. Review the entitlement type before restoring licenses or repeating a purchase search.
Restore licenses after ownership or entitlement is confirmed
When the correct account has the purchase or entitlement but the game remains locked, restore the console’s licenses. On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. PlayStation says restoring licenses does not affect your data. The official procedure is documented in How to restore licenses on PlayStation console.

Use restoration at the right point
Restoring licenses is a synchronization step; it cannot create ownership for an account that never bought or claimed the game. First identify the purchasing account or confirm the PlayStation Plus entitlement. Then restore licenses while signed in to the account that owns or claims the title, and test the game again.

- Confirm that the console is connected to the internet so the account can be validated.
- Check that you are signed in to the account whose history shows the game or subscription entitlement.
- If another profile is meant to play the title, recheck Console Sharing and Offline Play on the purchasing account.
- Check PlayStation service status for an outage affecting account or Store services.
- Install any available PS5 system-software update, then try the game again.

The game appears in one account’s history
You have identified the likely purchasing account. Sign in to that account and launch the game. If a different user needs access, check Console Sharing and Offline Play. If the owner’s account also sees a padlock, restore licenses and continue with service-status and system-software checks.
The game appears only as a PlayStation Plus entitlement
Check whether the subscription is active. For catalog access, confirm that the title has not left the catalog. Do not treat the absence of a conventional purchase entry as evidence that the account bought the game under another profile.
The game appears in no account history
Recheck every account, use a date range that covers the possible purchase date, and have the family manager inspect family-member history when applicable. If no account has a transaction or valid PlayStation Plus entitlement, the console has not established an individual digital purchase for the title. A padlock cannot identify an owner that the account records do not show.
The owner can play, but another profile cannot
This pattern points first to sharing configuration rather than ownership. Confirm that the purchasing account is present and that Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled for this PS5. The owner’s transaction history remains the proof of purchase; the other profile’s access is derived from the sharing setting.

Regional and account-history limitations
The transaction-history instructions cited here come from PlayStation’s Canada English support page, while the locked-game troubleshooting page is from PlayStation’s US English support site. Menu wording, account pages, subscription benefits and catalog availability can differ by region. If a label is different on your console, use the equivalent local PlayStation account or support page rather than assuming that a regional difference means the purchase is missing.
The two-year default history window is a procedural display setting described by PlayStation, not a claim that older purchases were deleted. Select a suitable range when investigating an older game.
Use PlayStation’s voucher guidance when the game came from a code
If the title was obtained with a voucher rather than a direct Store purchase, check every account associated with the console. PlayStation’s voucher troubleshooting guidance recommends reviewing each account’s transaction history when redeemed content cannot be found. The relevant support page is Problems using voucher codes on PlayStation Store.
A voucher can be redeemed on an account other than the profile that expected to play the game. That is why the account-by-account history check is more reliable than searching only the currently active user.
What not to do
- Do not buy the game again immediately. First check every account, sharing settings and PlayStation Plus status.
- Do not assume the padlock names a different owner. It only signals that the current profile or console cannot validate access at that moment.
- Do not use a recent date range for an old purchase. The history display defaults to the past two years according to PlayStation’s instructions.
- Do not confuse shared access with ownership. The account that plays through Console Sharing may not be the account whose transaction history contains the game.
- Do not restore licenses as a substitute for ownership. Restoration can refresh a valid entitlement, but it cannot grant a license to an account that never purchased or claimed the title.

- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Transaction History.
- Select a date range that covers the possible purchase date.
- Search the current account for the game title.
- Repeat the search for every other account associated with the PS5.
- Ask the family manager to check family-member history when required.
- If another account owns the game, verify Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- If PlayStation Plus supplied access, verify subscription status and catalog availability.
- After confirming a valid entitlement, check service status and system software.
- Run Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
This sequence identifies the account or entitlement source before you take corrective action, which is the key to resolving a locked game without purchasing it twice.
