The reliable test is the validated ledger record. Search the account with an XRPL explorer or the account_tx method, then inspect each transaction by hash. Confirm validated: true, read meta.TransactionResult, and examine meta.AffectedNodes. If a record is missing, first verify that the server actually stores the requested ledger range. Only after that should you compare the evidence with the specific bug advisory, because a node’s local database problem, a consensus defect, and a compromised client library have very different consequences.
What it means for an account to be “affected”
“Ledger bug” can describe several unrelated situations. Before checking data, identify which claim you are testing:
| Situation | What may be wrong | What proves impact |
|---|---|---|
| Validated ledger or consensus defect | The network’s accepted state or transaction processing may have been incorrect. | A maintainer’s incident report tied to a particular ledger range, plus a discrepancy in validated ledger data. |
| Node transaction-database defect | A server’s local SQLite history may contain an incorrect or incomplete entry. | Evidence from the affected node and the maintainer’s repair guidance; this does not by itself show that public ledger state or funds changed. |
| Client or dependency compromise | Wallet software may have exposed signing keys or altered what a user signed. | The affected software version, key-handling evidence, and the relevant security advisory. |
| Ordinary transaction failure | The transaction was validated but did not perform the requested action. | validated: true together with a non-success TransactionResult; the fee can still be charged. |
An account’s public history is not a list of only successful payments sent by that account. It can include transactions that affected the account in another role, such as a destination, offer owner, trust-line participant, or signer. Review the transaction type and the ledger entries changed in its metadata.
Collect the identifiers before you investigate
You can inspect public XRPL history without a seed phrase, private key, signing secret, or wallet password. Gather:

- The complete account address, normally beginning with
r. - The transaction hash, if the report concerns one specific transaction.
- An approximate UTC date and time, or a suspected ledger index.
- The name or link to the bug advisory, if one exists.
- The wallet, library, node, or application version involved.
- Whether keys were entered into, generated by, or handled by the affected software.
Do not paste secret material into an explorer, API request, support ticket, browser console, or chat. Public account addresses and transaction hashes are sufficient for ledger verification.
Inspect the account’s validated history
Using an explorer
Open a reputable XRPL explorer and search the account address. Set the date or ledger range wide enough to include the suspected event. For each candidate transaction, record its hash, ledger index, transaction type, account roles, and whether the explorer marks it as validated. An explorer’s display is useful for discovery, but the transaction’s validated response and metadata are the authoritative evidence you should reconcile.
Using account_tx
The XRPL account_tx method returns transactions involving an account. Send a request to an XRPL API server using its JSON-RPC or WebSocket interface. A minimal request body is:
{
"method": "account_tx",
"params": [{
"account": "rEXAMPLEACCOUNTADDRESS",
"ledger_index_min": -1,
"ledger_index_max": -1,
"binary": false,
"forward": true,
"limit": 100
}]
}
Replace the example address with the account you are checking. The -1 values ask the server for the available history boundaries; they do not guarantee that the server has every historical ledger. Keep the response’s ledger_index_min and ledger_index_max values with your notes. They define the range that was actually searched.

The response contains a transactions array and may include a marker. A marker means more pages are available. Submit the same request again with that marker until you reach the date or ledger index of interest. Stopping after the first page can make an old transaction appear to be missing.
Why the account history can surprise you
The method is account-centered, not sender-centered. A transaction may appear because the account received an asset, had an offer modified, was affected by a trust-line change, or was otherwise represented in the transaction’s affected nodes. Conversely, a server with limited history may return only the portion it retains. Treat the returned range and pagination information as part of the evidence, not as incidental fields.
Check one transaction all the way to finality
Look up the hash
Once you have a transaction hash, query the transaction directly with the XRPL transaction lookup method or open the hash in an explorer. Do not rely on a wallet’s “submitted,” “pending,” or “accepted by server” message. Those states can describe a provisional response before consensus validation.
The response must explicitly contain validated: true. A transaction included only in an open ledger, a candidate ledger, or an unvalidated server response is not final. The XRP Ledger Foundation’s transaction guidance states that the outcome must be checked when the transaction appears in a validated ledger version.

Read meta.TransactionResult
Validation does not mean success. Read meta.TransactionResult in the transaction metadata:
| Observed result | Interpretation | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
tesSUCCESS |
The requested ledger changes were applied according to the transaction’s rules. | Use AffectedNodes to verify the account, balance, trust line, offer, or other object changed as expected. |
A failure code such as tec... or another non-success code |
The transaction is final, but the requested operation did not complete. | Check whether the fee was deducted and identify the rule that caused the failure. |
| No validated result | The response is incomplete or not final. | Query again from a server that can retrieve the relevant validated ledger. |
A failed transaction can still have a fee effect even though its intended payment, offer, or setting change did not occur. Never infer success merely from a transaction hash, a timestamp, or inclusion in a ledger.
Inspect meta.AffectedNodes
AffectedNodes lists ledger entries that were created, deleted, or modified. The entries are represented as CreatedNode, ModifiedNode, or DeletedNode, with fields such as LedgerEntryType, PreviousFields, FinalFields, and sometimes NewFields.
Recommended Free Tools
- For an account, compare the relevant balance, sequence, flags, signer-list, or regular-key fields before and after the transaction.
- For a trust line, check the issuer, counterparty, limits, and balances rather than looking only at the transaction’s requested amount.
- For offers, examine whether an offer was created, partially consumed, modified, or deleted.
- For payments, use the delivered amount recorded by the protocol. The requested amount is not always the amount actually delivered, particularly when an order-book conversion or partial payment is involved.
Interpret fields in the context of the transaction type and asset. A balance represented in drops of XRP is not interchangeable with an issued-currency amount, and a change to a ledger object is not automatically a loss.

Handle a missing transaction without jumping to a conclusion
Verify the searched range
If account_tx returns no expected record, first inspect ledger_index_min and ledger_index_max. Compare those values with the ledger index or date you need. A server may retain only recent history, may not have fetched older ledgers, or may be configured without complete historical data.
Ask another independent XRPL data source that advertises coverage of the required range. An absence from a limited-history server means “not found in the data this server searched,” not “the transaction never existed.”
Check pagination and filters
- Follow every returned
markeruntil the target date or ledger is covered. - Remove an overly narrow date or ledger filter and repeat the search.
- Confirm that the account string is complete and correctly checksummed.
- Make sure you are searching the intended network and not a test network or private deployment.
- Try a direct transaction-hash lookup if a hash is available.
Reconcile conflicting displays
When an explorer and an API disagree, compare the transaction hash, validated ledger index, and validated ledger hash. A cached explorer page, an unvalidated response, or a stale node database can explain a display difference. A validated ledger version is immutable; once you have the same validated ledger identity from an independent source, use that record and its metadata as the baseline.
Compare evidence against the exact bug report
A label such as “XRPL ledger bug” is too broad to establish account impact. Read the maintainer’s issue or advisory and extract five facts:

- The affected software component and exact versions.
- The affected ledger range, if any.

- The symptoms and evidence maintainers say are diagnostic.
- The required remediation and whether users, operators, or both must act.
Local ledger-database repairs
rippled documentation for the ledger cleaner describes repairing incorrect entries in a node’s SQLite transaction databases caused by a fixed bug. That kind of repair concerns the node’s local copy of transaction data. It does not, by itself, establish that the public validated ledger was incorrect or that an account’s funds changed. If your evidence comes from one server’s database, verify it against another source and a validated ledger record before treating it as an account incident.
Consensus or validated-state incidents
A genuine validated-state incident must identify the affected ledger versions or protocol behavior. Look for a discrepancy in the validated transaction metadata, account state, or ledger hash, not merely an API timeout or an explorer rendering error. If the advisory names a range, query that exact range and preserve the returned ledger indexes and hashes for later comparison.
Client-library compromise is a different emergency
The XRPL Foundation’s security advisory dated April 22, 2025 reported compromised xrpl.js package versions 4.2.1 through 4.2.4 and 2.14.2. It identified 4.2.5 and 2.14.3 as patched versions and advised users of affected versions to stop using them and rotate potentially exposed keys or secrets.

If the wallet or service used one of those versions, determine the installed version from a lockfile, package manifest, build artifact, or vendor record. Stop signing with the affected environment, move assets using a trusted patched setup, and rotate any potentially exposed secrets according to the advisory. If the version was not used, do not attribute an unrelated history problem to that package incident.
A practical evidence worksheet
Keep one row for every transaction you investigate. This prevents an explorer screenshot or an unvalidated response from being mistaken for final evidence.
| Field | Value to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Exact public address | Prevents checks against the wrong account. |
| Transaction hash | Full hash | Provides an unambiguous transaction identity. |
| Validated | true or not confirmed |
Separates final ledger data from provisional data. |
| Ledger index and hash | Values returned with the validated transaction | Allows independent sources to be compared. |
| TransactionResult | Exact result code | Shows whether the requested operation succeeded. |
| AffectedNodes | Relevant created, modified, or deleted entries | Shows the state changes actually recorded. |
| History coverage | ledger_index_min, ledger_index_max, and pagination status |
Shows whether a “missing” record was genuinely searched for. |
| Bug scope | Consensus, local database, client, or unknown | Prevents the wrong remediation. |
Decision guide: what to do after checking
- Validated success and expected affected nodes: the transaction was recorded as intended; preserve the hash, ledger identity, and metadata.
- Validated failure: treat the operation as unsuccessful, account for any fee effect, and investigate the exact result code rather than resubmitting blindly.
- Not validated or not found within the server’s range: obtain complete history from another source and repeat the lookup.
- Conflicting validated records: compare ledger hashes and contact the relevant XRPL infrastructure operator or maintainer with the exact evidence.
- Evidence of an affected client version: stop using that software, follow the security advisory, and handle key rotation as a compromise response.
- Only a local node-database anomaly: repair or replace the node’s local data as directed by maintainers, but do not claim that account funds changed without validated-ledger evidence.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling a transaction “complete” because a wallet displayed a submission confirmation.
- Equating a validated transaction with a successful transaction without reading
TransactionResult. - Searching one page of account history and ignoring a pagination marker.
- Treating a limited-history server’s empty result as proof that no transaction occurred.
- Reading only the requested payment amount instead of the delivered amount and affected nodes.
- Entering a seed phrase while trying to obtain public transaction data.
- Assuming a node’s SQLite history error proves the validated ledger or account balance was wrong.
- Applying a security advisory to software versions or networks it does not cover.
What you can and cannot prove
This process can establish whether a particular transaction appears in validated history, what result code it received, and which ledger entries changed. It can also show whether the data source searched the relevant history range. It cannot, by itself, determine why a client displayed an incorrect balance, recover a secret key, or prove that a software package was compromised without version and exposure evidence.
The decisive boundary is validation: transaction metadata describes final account-state changes only when it belongs to a validated ledger version. Use that record, its ledger identity, and the exact bug scope together before concluding that an account was affected.
