Yes, your PC can meet Windows ML’s basic requirements without an NPU or dedicated graphics card. Check that Windows is a release supported by the Windows App SDK and that Settings > System > About > System type reports an x64-based or ARM-based system. Microsoft lists the baseline hardware requirement as any PC configuration. Windows 11 version 24H2 (build 26100) or later is a separate requirement for hardware-optimized execution providers delivered through the Windows ML catalog, and those providers still depend on compatible hardware and drivers.
What “supports Windows ML” means
There are three different compatibility questions, and confusing them produces most incorrect answers:
- Framework support: Can Windows ML itself run on this Windows installation and processor architecture?
- Acceleration support: Can Windows ML use a particular GPU, NPU or other optimized execution provider?
- Application support: Can the specific Windows ML application, model and runtime operate on this PC?
Microsoft’s published Windows ML baseline is a Windows version supported by the Windows App SDK, an x64 or ARM64 architecture, and any PC hardware configuration. That broad hardware statement includes CPUs, integrated or discrete GPUs, and NPUs. CPU inference is the normal fallback path, so an NPU is not a general Windows ML requirement.
The stricter requirement applies only when you want newer hardware-optimized providers obtained through the Windows ML catalog. Microsoft documents Windows 11 version 24H2, build 26100 or later for that path. The build alone does not guarantee that a provider will be available: the device and its driver must also meet that provider’s requirements.

Check your Windows edition, version and architecture
Use Windows’ built-in information pages first. You do not need a special compatibility checker for the framework-level check.
1. Open the About page
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Under Windows specifications, record the edition, version and OS build.
- Under Device specifications, find System type.
The system-type line normally identifies an x64-based processor or an ARM-based processor. Those are the architecture families relevant to the published Windows ML requirement. If the line identifies a different architecture, do not assume that a Windows ML package or application will install; verify the application’s own support statement.
2. Confirm the exact build with winver
- Open Start and type
winver, or press Windows key + R, enterwinver, and press Enter. - Read the dialog’s Windows version and OS build.
- For catalog-based hardware acceleration, confirm that the release is Windows 11 version 24H2 and that the build is 26100 or later.
The About page and winver can display related information in different places, so use the build shown by winver when you are checking the 24H2 threshold. A supported Windows App SDK release remains relevant for baseline framework support; the exact supported Windows versions can change as the SDK changes.
The Windows ML baseline checklist
| Check | What Microsoft’s baseline requires | How to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows version | A Windows version supported by the Windows App SDK used by the application | Settings > System > About, then compare the version with the applicable Windows App SDK requirements |
| Architecture | x64 or ARM64 | Settings > System > About > Device specifications > System type |
| Hardware | Any PC configuration; Microsoft includes CPUs, integrated/discrete GPUs and NPUs | Identify the processor and graphics hardware only if the application or provider has an additional requirement |
| CPU inference | Supported as the baseline execution path without an NPU or discrete GPU | No special accelerator check is required; the application must still support your Windows version and architecture |
If all three framework checks pass, the PC meets the general Windows ML conditions described by Microsoft. That does not promise that every model, application or optimized provider will work.
Do you need Windows 11 24H2 or an NPU?
For Windows ML in general: no
Windows 11 24H2 and an NPU are not prerequisites for the framework’s basic CPU path. Microsoft describes CPU execution as the starting route with no additional setup, and its general hardware requirement is any PC configuration. A machine with only a CPU can therefore satisfy the baseline check when its Windows version and architecture are supported.
For catalog hardware optimization: usually a separate check
Windows ML’s catalog can provide newer hardware-optimized execution providers for NPUs and specific GPU hardware. Microsoft documents Windows 11 version 24H2, build 26100 or later for those providers. You must then check the provider’s own device and driver requirements. A PC can be on build 26100 or later and still lack a compatible provider because its accelerator or driver is unsupported.
For a Copilot+ style feature: check the application, not the label
“Supports Windows ML,” “has an NPU,” and “is a Copilot+ PC” describe different things. An application may require an NPU, a specific GPU vendor or driver, a minimum model capability, or a particular Windows runtime even though Windows ML itself can run on a CPU. Treat the app publisher’s requirements as an additional gate rather than replacing the framework check.

Understand the execution paths
| Execution path | What it means for your PC | Additional conditions |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | A qualifying CPU can run the baseline inference path | Windows version, architecture and the application’s runtime requirements still apply |
| DirectML GPU | Windows ML can use supported integrated or discrete graphics hardware through DirectML | The Windows version and the application must support this path; actual device and driver support matters |
| Catalog hardware-optimized provider | Can target selected NPU or GPU hardware with a provider obtained through the Windows ML catalog | Windows 11 24H2/build 26100 or later, plus compatible hardware and driver for that provider |
The table describes compatibility routes, not a performance promise. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish a universal speed threshold or guarantee that moving a workload from CPU to an accelerator will improve every model.
Check the specific Windows ML application
After the operating-system check, read the application’s installation or deployment requirements. Application requirements can be narrower than Windows ML’s framework requirements.
- Confirm the application’s supported Windows editions and versions.
- Confirm whether it ships as x64, ARM64 or both. A Windows PC with a compatible architecture can still be excluded if the application package supports only another architecture.
- Check required runtimes, such as the .NET version named by the application.
- Check whether the application requires a particular execution provider, GPU, NPU, graphics driver or model format.
- Check whether the requirement applies to running the finished application or only to building it. Microsoft’s developer documentation lists language-specific build tools and .NET requirements for development paths; those are not automatically hardware requirements for an ordinary user.
If an app does not state whether it can fall back to CPU, ask its publisher before assuming that a missing NPU is the cause of an installation or startup failure.
A practical decision process
Case 1: You only need to know whether Windows ML can run
- Record the Windows version and build in
winver. - Record the system type in Settings > System > About.
- Check that the Windows release is supported by the Windows App SDK version used by the application.
- Confirm x64 or ARM64 architecture.
- Proceed with CPU inference unless the application specifies another provider.
A qualifying architecture and supported Windows version are the decisive checks here. Do not reject the PC because it lacks an NPU.

Case 2: You want the Windows ML catalog’s optimized provider
- Use
winverto verify Windows 11 version 24H2 and build 26100 or later. - Identify the provider you intend to use, such as an NPU- or GPU-focused provider.
- Read that provider’s device and driver requirements.
- Check the installed hardware and driver against those requirements.
- Verify that the provider is available for the device; the 24H2 build by itself is not a compatibility guarantee.
Case 3: An application will not install or start
- Compare the app’s stated Windows version with the version shown by
winver. - Compare the app package architecture with the system type shown in Settings.
- Install or update the runtime named by the publisher, if required.
- Check whether the app requires an accelerator instead of permitting CPU execution.
- Check the graphics or NPU driver if the app selects a hardware provider.
These checks separate a framework mismatch from an app packaging issue and from a missing acceleration provider.
How to interpret common results
| Your result | What it establishes | What remains to check |
|---|---|---|
| Supported Windows version and x64/ARM64 system type | The PC meets the published framework baseline | Application runtime, model and provider requirements |
| CPU only, with no NPU | CPU inference remains a valid baseline path | Whether the application requires acceleration or runs acceptably on CPU |
| Windows 11 24H2, build 26100 or later | The OS meets the documented catalog-provider version threshold | Exact device and driver support for the chosen provider |
| Compatible GPU or NPU but an older Windows build | The hardware may be capable in principle | Upgrade to a supported Windows build before using the catalog acceleration path |
| Supported Windows build but unsupported provider hardware or driver | The framework can still use another available path, such as CPU | Use a supported provider, update the driver when the manufacturer supports it, or remain on CPU |
Troubleshooting when a check fails
The system type is not x64 or ARM64
Do not infer compatibility from the processor’s marketing name. Use the exact System type value in Settings. If it is outside x64 or ARM64, verify whether the particular Windows ML application publishes support for that architecture. The general Windows ML requirement does not establish support for every other architecture.
The Windows build is below 26100
This does not automatically mean Windows ML cannot run. It means the PC does not meet the documented Windows 11 24H2/build 26100 threshold for the newer catalog hardware-optimized providers. Recheck the application’s baseline Windows App SDK support and use CPU or another supported path if the app allows it.

The PC is on build 26100 or later, but acceleration is unavailable
Check the provider’s device list and driver requirements. Microsoft makes provider availability dependent on the device and driver, so the OS build is necessary for that catalog route but not sufficient. A current driver supplied for a different hardware generation does not prove that the desired provider is supported.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The app reports a missing runtime
Follow the app publisher’s runtime requirement rather than treating it as a Windows ML hardware failure. Developer documentation can list .NET versions and build tools for a language-specific path; those requirements concern the app’s software environment and may not require an NPU or dedicated GPU.
The model runs but is too slow
Slow CPU inference is a performance question, not proof that the PC fails the framework compatibility check. Compare the workload against the app’s documented provider options, then verify hardware, Windows build and driver support before considering an accelerator. There is no universal Windows ML performance cutoff that makes a PC compatible or incompatible.
Do the checks prove that every model will run?
No. Passing the framework checks establishes a supported starting environment, not universal model compatibility. The application may limit supported model formats, operators, memory sizes or execution providers. A model can also run on one provider and fail on another if that provider lacks an operation it needs. Treat a successful CPU test as confirmation that the basic path works, then test the actual model and workload.
Likewise, a listed GPU or NPU does not establish that the application will select it. Provider selection can depend on the app version, installed driver and the provider package available to that device. If an app offers a provider-selection screen, record both the requested provider and the provider actually reported in its logs.
Architecture details that are easy to miss
“ARM-based” in the System type field is not the same as saying that every x64 application will run identically on the machine. Windows ML’s general architecture wording covers ARM64, but the application still has to ship an ARM64 build or document its supported emulation path. The same distinction applies to x64: an x64 Windows installation does not make an ARM64-only package installable.
Windows edition can matter to the application even when it is not a separate Windows ML framework requirement. Record the edition along with the version so the publisher can identify policy, servicing or runtime restrictions. Do not substitute the edition name for the OS build; both can be relevant.

CPU versus acceleration: a sensible comparison
- Start with workload acceptance: If the model runs accurately and quickly enough on CPU, there may be no compatibility reason to change hardware.
- Check provider fit: Choose a provider only after confirming that its supported device list includes the installed hardware.
- Verify the operating system: Catalog hardware-optimized providers require Windows 11 24H2/build 26100 or later according to Microsoft’s current documentation.
- Verify the driver: The provider and driver must support the particular device generation; a generic or newer driver number is not proof by itself.
These are compatibility gates, not a promise of a particular speedup. Performance depends on the model, provider implementation, driver and workload.

Windows ML baseline support is tied to the Windows App SDK version used by the app. As SDK releases change their supported Windows versions, a conclusion based on an old app or old SDK can become stale. Recheck the app’s current documentation after a major app update, Windows upgrade or provider change.

Should you upgrade the PC?
Do not buy an NPU-equipped PC or discrete GPU solely because Windows ML is mentioned. First establish which path the application needs:
- If CPU inference is acceptable and the baseline Windows and architecture checks pass, an upgrade is not required for framework support.
- If the app explicitly requires a catalog provider, compare its hardware and driver requirements with the existing PC before changing hardware.
- If the app offers CPU fallback but performance is inadequate, acceleration may be useful, but the benefit depends on the model, provider and driver rather than on the Windows ML label alone.
Built-in Windows information is enough to perform the initial compatibility check. Hardware purchasing becomes relevant only after the application and provider requirements identify a specific limitation.
What to record when asking for support
Support requests are easier to resolve when they include the exact compatibility facts instead of a general statement such as “my PC does not support AI.” Record:
- Windows edition and version from Settings > System > About
- OS build from
winver - System type, including x64-based or ARM-based wording
- Processor, GPU and NPU model names when acceleration is involved
- Graphics or accelerator driver version
- Application version, model name and the execution provider it is attempting to use
- The exact installation, provider-selection or runtime error
With those details, an app publisher can distinguish a Windows App SDK support issue, an architecture mismatch, a missing runtime, and a provider-specific hardware or driver limitation.

Bottom line for your check
Open Settings > System > About and confirm an x64-based or ARM-based system, then run winver and compare the Windows release with the Windows App SDK requirements for the app. That is the general Windows ML check, and it does not require an NPU. Add the Windows 11 24H2/build 26100 check only when you need a catalog-delivered hardware-optimized provider, then verify the provider’s device and driver compatibility separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my PC support Windows ML if it has no NPU?
Usually, yes. Microsoft lists any PC configuration for the framework baseline, and CPU inference is a supported starting path. An NPU is needed only when the particular application or hardware-optimized provider requires one.
How do I check whether my Windows PC supports Windows ML?
Open Settings > System > About and check the Windows version and System type. Confirm x64-based or ARM-based architecture, then run winver to verify the exact build. Compare the Windows release with the Windows App SDK requirements for the app.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do I need Windows 11 24H2 for Windows ML?
Not for the general CPU path. Microsoft documents Windows 11 version 24H2, build 26100 or later for newer hardware-optimized providers obtained through the Windows ML catalog.
Is build 26100 enough to guarantee GPU or NPU acceleration?
No. Build 26100 or later is the documented operating-system threshold for that catalog route, but the selected provider must also support the PC’s device and driver.
Can an ARM-based Windows PC run Windows ML?
The general requirement includes ARM64 systems. Confirm that the specific application ships an ARM64 package or documents support for the way it runs on your system.
What if Windows ML works but my model is slow?
That is a performance issue, not proof that the PC fails compatibility. Check whether the application supports a compatible GPU or NPU provider, then verify Windows build, device and driver requirements before upgrading hardware.

The Bottom Line
Check the Windows version and System type first: a Windows App SDK-supported release plus x64 or ARM64 is the general Windows ML baseline, and CPU inference does not require an NPU. Check Windows 11 24H2/build 26100 or later only for catalog hardware acceleration, then confirm the chosen provider’s device and driver support.
