Open the built-in Windows Update page: in Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Windows Update; in Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Read the status, select Check for updates, install anything offered, and restart when Windows requests it. Then inspect Update history to verify what installed and when. A clean result means Windows Update has nothing to offer your device at that moment; it does not prove that every update released by Microsoft has reached every PC.

Check for updates in Windows 11

Windows 11 puts the status and manual check on one page. Use this procedure when you want to know whether updates are waiting now.

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update in the left pane.
  3. Read the message at the top of the page. It may say that you are up to date, show an update ready to download, request a restart, or display an error.
  4. Select Check for updates to run a fresh manual check.
  5. If Windows offers an update, select Download & install.
  6. Restart when prompted. Some installations are not complete until the restart finishes.

Return to the same page after restarting. The status shown then is the current Windows Update assessment, not a permanent guarantee that no newer update will become available later.

  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Read the current status and select Check for updates.
  5. Download and install any updates Windows offers.
  6. Restart if Windows asks you to do so, then check the page again.

Checking still works as a way to see what Windows Update reports, but Windows 10 reached the end of support on October 14, 2025. That lifecycle change matters: a successful check does not turn an unsupported operating system into a supported one.

What the Windows Update status actually tells you

The page reports what Microsoft is currently offering to this particular device. Microsoft can hold an update while it assesses compatibility and readiness, and updates may be released to devices in stages. Consequently, an empty result is evidence about your PC’s present offer, not proof that every update released elsewhere is already available to you.

“You’re up to date”

This status means Windows Update currently has no update ready for installation on the device. It does not rule out a staged rollout, a temporary compatibility hold, or an update that will appear after Microsoft changes the device’s readiness assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A restart is pending

A pending restart means files have been downloaded or installed but Windows still needs to restart to finish the operation. Save your work, allow the restart, and inspect Windows Update again afterward. Treat the status before the restart as unfinished rather than as a final installation result.

An update is paused

A pause deliberately delays updates. Windows 11’s current pause control can be set for up to 35 days; updates resume when the selected period expires. Windows 10 has pause controls on its own Windows Update page. A paused page should not be interpreted as proof that no updates are missing: remove or let the pause expire, then run Check for updates.

An error or warning is shown

Keep the exact wording or code visible while troubleshooting. An error is a failed update operation, not confirmation that the PC is current. Low disk space, connectivity problems, driver issues, or an operating-system version that is no longer serviced can all affect the result.

Verify which updates installed

Windows Update history is the record to use when you need to confirm past installation rather than current availability.

Windows 10 path

Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select View update history. Windows may use the longer “View” label on this version.

History answers “What installed and when?” The Windows Update landing page answers “What does Windows currently offer?” Use both: an old successful entry does not establish that a newer update is available or that the current system has no pending restart.

Some history entries expose an option to uninstall an update. Microsoft does not recommend removing updates unless it is necessary to resolve a specific problem. Do not use uninstall as a routine way to clear a warning or make the history look clean.

Why a PC can look current when an update is not installing

Windows has not completed its check

Connect the PC to the internet and select Check for updates manually. A stale status can persist when the device has not been able to contact the update service.

Updates are paused

Open the Windows Update page and inspect its pause control. A pause postpones delivery; it does not assess whether the operating system is missing security fixes. Resume updates or wait for the stated pause period to end, then check again.

The connection is metered

On a metered connection, some updates may not install automatically. If an update is expected but does not appear to download, check whether the current network is marked as metered and follow Windows’ on-screen choice for downloading it. Do not assume that an automatic-download delay means no update exists.

Microsoft is staging delivery

Compatibility and readiness checks can delay an update for one device while another receives it. A clean check therefore needs to be read alongside any compatibility notice. Rechecking later is more meaningful than repeatedly forcing an installation that Windows has not offered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PC needs more storage

Insufficient free space can stop an update even when Windows has identified it. Follow Microsoft’s Windows Update storage guidance, remove files you no longer need, and run the check again. Keep enough working space for the download and installation rather than deleting system files at random.

A driver or device problem interrupts setup

Drivers are among the issues Microsoft identifies when updates fail. Read the reported error, use the Windows Update troubleshooter, and address the named device or driver through supported Windows or hardware support channels. Avoid random driver-updater utilities and registry edits as a first response; they can add risk without fixing the underlying update state.

A reliable troubleshooting sequence

Use these checks in order so that a simple cause is resolved before you consider an upgrade or paid repair.

  1. Record the current message. Note whether the page says up to date, paused, restart required, downloading, or error, and copy any error code.
  2. Confirm internet access. Open a normal website, reconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet if necessary, and run Check for updates again.
  3. Inspect pause settings. Resume updates or wait for the stated pause to expire. Then perform a new check.
  4. Consider the network type. A metered connection can prevent automatic installation of some updates. Follow Windows’ prompt before switching networks or allowing the download.
  5. Check available storage. If Windows reports insufficient space, use its storage recommendations and retry after freeing space.
  6. Allow the requested restart. Finish the restart, sign in, and return to Windows Update to see whether the pending state cleared.
  7. Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter. Use the troubleshooter associated with your Windows version and follow its findings rather than applying unrelated registry changes.
  8. Escalate persistent failures. If the same error returns after connectivity, storage, pause, troubleshooting, and restart checks, preserve the code and seek qualified repair help or evaluate the operating-system support options described below.

Check the Windows version before interpreting an alert

When Windows says that security updates are not being received, first identify the installed Windows version and whether it is still within its servicing period. In Windows 10, Microsoft says each version is supported for 18 months. A device can therefore show a security warning because its particular version is out of service even when the hardware itself is working normally. The same warning can also follow unsuccessful installations, a driver conflict, insufficient free disk space, or another device problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the version information, the current Windows Update message, and Update history together. This combination distinguishes “nothing is currently offered,” “an installation failed,” and “the operating system no longer receives standard fixes.” Keep a screenshot or written copy of the version and error details if you need help later.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025

Microsoft states: “Windows 10 has reached the end of support on October 14, 2025.” Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but after that date Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical support, or security fixes for Windows 10 under its standard support lifecycle.

This changes how you interpret a Windows 10 result. The page may report no updates because none is currently offered, while the operating system itself remains outside ordinary support. Checking for updates is still useful for seeing the device’s status and completing anything available, but it is not a substitute for moving to a supported platform.

The “You’re not receiving security updates” alert

This alert does not identify one universal cause. Microsoft says it can indicate that the installed Windows 10 version is out of service or that updates have been unsuccessful. Each Windows 10 version is supported for 18 months, and failed updates can also involve drivers, insufficient free disk space, or another device problem.

Use the alert as a prompt to check the exact Windows version, read the Windows Update status and history, and determine which support path applies. Do not treat the alert alone as proof that a single driver, storage condition, or version issue is responsible.

Choose the next step for a Windows 10 PC

There is no single upgrade decision for every computer. Compare the available paths against the device’s hardware, your need for security support, and the time you can spend troubleshooting.

Path When it makes sense What to verify
Upgrade the existing PC to Windows 11 The Windows 10 computer is eligible and meets Windows 11’s minimum hardware requirements. Confirm eligibility and compatibility before starting the upgrade; Microsoft identifies eligible version 22H2 devices as potential candidates.
Consumer Extended Security Updates You need more time on a Windows 10 device that cannot immediately move to Windows 11. Check Microsoft’s current program terms and eligibility before enrollment; availability and conditions can change.
Replace the PC The existing hardware cannot meet Windows 11 requirements or is no longer dependable. Choose a computer that supports Windows 11 and fits your applications, data-transfer needs, and accessibility requirements.
Qualified repair help An otherwise suitable computer repeatedly fails updates because of a hardware, driver, storage, or configuration problem. Provide the technician with the exact Windows Update error, update history, and steps already attempted.

These are alternatives to evaluate, not instructions to buy hardware merely to run a Windows Update check. First establish whether the problem is eligibility, a fixable installation failure, or the end of the operating system’s support lifecycle.

How to tell whether the check was successful

A dependable check produces a clear current status, no unexplained pause, and no pending restart. If Windows offered an update, the installation should appear in Update history after the requested restart. If it offered nothing, record the date and the status message, especially when Microsoft may be staging delivery.

  • Current status: the Windows Update page has finished checking and displays a specific result.
  • Installation evidence: an offered update appears in Update history with its installation date after setup completes.
  • Restart state: Windows is not still asking for a restart to finish the operation.
  • Support context: a Windows 10 result is interpreted alongside the October 14, 2025 end-of-support date.
  • Failure record: any recurring error code, storage warning, pause, or compatibility message is retained for the next troubleshooting step.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Relying only on history: old successful entries do not reveal what is available today.
  • Stopping before a restart: an update can remain incomplete until Windows reboots.
  • Confusing a pause with “up to date”: paused delivery says updates are delayed, not that none are missing.
  • Forcing unsupported fixes: registry edits, unofficial update packages, and random driver tools can create new problems. Start with Windows’ own messages and Microsoft’s troubleshooter.
  • Assuming a new PC is required: check Windows 11 eligibility, storage, drivers, and repair options first. Replacement is one support path, not the definition of a successful update check.

Common questions

How do I know if my PC is up to date?

Open the Windows Update page for your Windows version, select Check for updates, and read the completed status. Confirm the result against Update history and any restart request. “You’re up to date” describes what Windows Update currently offers that device; it is not a promise that every staged update has already been released to it.

Where can I see installed updates?

Use Settings > Windows Update > Update history in Windows 11. In Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history.

Should I keep checking a paused PC?

A paused PC will not receive updates normally until the pause ends or is resumed. Check the pause control first, then run a new manual check after updates are active. Windows 11 currently allows a pause of up to 35 days; that limit is a control boundary, not a recommendation to postpone security updates.

Does an empty result prove that no security update exists?

No. It proves only that Windows Update has nothing to offer that device at that check. Staged delivery, compatibility assessment, a metered connection, a pause, an error, or a pending restart can change the interpretation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say I am not receiving security updates?

Check the exact Windows 10 version and Update history. The version may be out of service, an update may have failed, or a driver, storage shortage, or other device problem may be blocking installation. The alert alone does not identify which cause applies.

Can I keep using Windows 10 because Windows Update says it is current?

You can continue using the PC, but the status does not restore standard support. Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, so evaluate Windows 11 eligibility, current Extended Security Update terms, replacement, or qualified repair help based on your situation.

Should I uninstall a failed update?

Update history may offer an uninstall option for some entries, but Microsoft does not recommend removing updates unless it is necessary to resolve a specific problem. Record the error and use supported troubleshooting before considering removal.

What should I give a repair technician?

Provide the Windows version, the exact Windows Update error or warning, the date of the failed check, Update history, and the steps you already tried. This helps separate a network or storage issue from a driver, hardware, compatibility, or support-lifecycle problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I manually check for Windows updates?

In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. In Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Where is Update history in Windows 10?

Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select View update history. Windows 11 uses Settings > Windows Update > Update history.

Does “You’re up to date” guarantee every Microsoft update is installed?

No. It reports what Windows Update currently offers that device. Staged delivery, compatibility holds, pauses, metered connections, errors, and pending restarts can affect what appears.

What does the Windows 10 security-update warning mean?

It can mean the installed Windows 10 version is out of service or that an update failed. Drivers, low disk space, and other device issues can also contribute, so check the version, status, and history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When did Windows 10 support end?

Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. PCs continue to work, but free standard security fixes and technical support ended.

What should I do if Windows Update keeps failing?

Verify internet access, resume paused updates, consider metered-network limits, free storage if warned, restart, run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, and preserve recurring error codes for qualified help.

The Bottom Line

Use Windows Update itself to check, install, restart, and then verify the result in Update history. Interpret a clean screen alongside pauses, staged delivery, metered connections, errors, storage, and restart status. For Windows 10, remember that standard support ended October 14, 2025; assess Windows 11 eligibility, current Extended Security Update terms, repair, or replacement rather than treating “up to date” as ongoing support.
