On a Snapdragon X PC, open Task Manager → Details and read the app’s Architecture column. ARM64 means that executable is running natively. x86 or x64 means Windows is translating it through emulation. ARM64 (x64 compatible) means a mixed Arm64EC process: some code is native Arm64 and some x64 code is emulated, so the application is not wholly native.
That check is a strong first indication, not a complete compatibility audit. Installers, plug-ins, background services, peripherals and kernel drivers can use different binaries. Follow the process below for the exact Windows build, application version and workflow you intend to use.
What “native” means on a Snapdragon X PC
Snapdragon X computers run Windows 11 on Arm. The processor’s native instruction set is Arm64, while many existing Windows programs were compiled for x86 or x64. Windows can run those user-mode programs through emulation. On Windows 11 24H2, that emulation technology is called Prism; Microsoft says Prism is optimized for Snapdragon, with some performance features specific to Snapdragon X hardware.
A program can therefore open successfully without being a native Arm application. Native execution generally gives the best efficiency and performance, but compatibility also depends on every component the program needs. Microsoft’s consumer guidance says most apps run on Windows 11 Arm PCs, yet it does not publish a percentage for the share that is fully native.

Microsoft describes Arm64EC as a way to combine native Arm64 code and existing x64 code in one process. A publisher can gradually port a large application, so an Arm64EC label is useful evidence of partial modernization rather than an all-or-nothing verdict.
Before checking, identify the exact software combination
Compatibility is tied to versions and hardware, not just an app’s name. Write down the Windows edition and build, the application’s release number, and the workflow you need. Include plug-ins, add-ins, fonts, codecs, browser extensions, background helpers and connected devices. A basic editor may run while a specialized plug-in or scanner integration fails.
- Open Settings → System → About and note the Windows edition, version and OS build.
- In the application, use its About or account screen to record the exact release and update channel.
- List every feature that matters: printing, scanning, VPN connections, virtualization, game anti-cheat, accessibility tools, cloud-file integration or hardware control.
- Record the model and firmware of any printer, scanner, audio interface, security key or other peripheral.
Do not apply a result from Windows 11 24H2 to an older build without checking that build’s documentation. Emulation behavior and available controls can change as Windows and the application are updated.
Check the process architecture in Task Manager
This is the quickest way to see how the main running executable is being handled.
- Start the application and leave it open. If it has a separate launcher, open the actual window that performs your work.
- Right-click the taskbar and choose Task Manager, or press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details in the left navigation. On older Task Manager layouts, choose the Details tab.
- Right-click any column heading, choose Select columns if necessary, and enable Architecture.
- Find the application’s executable and read the Architecture value. Use the process name and, when needed, the file location to distinguish the main program from a launcher or helper.
Interpret each label
- ARM64: the executable is compiled for native Arm64 execution.
- x86 or x64: the executable is running through Windows on Arm emulation. It can still be usable, but it is not native.
- ARM64 (x64 compatible): Microsoft’s label for an executable that is partly or fully built with Arm64EC. Native Arm64EC sections can run beside emulated x64 sections.
Task Manager reports the selected process, not necessarily every component in the product. A program can show ARM64 while a plug-in, updater, service or child process uses x64 emulation. Conversely, an x64 front end may launch an Arm64 helper. Inspect the processes involved in the workflow and verify critical components with the publisher.
What the Architecture column can—and cannot—prove
The value belongs to one process at one moment. It does not certify the installer, every DLL, a scheduled task, a Windows service or a browser extension. Some applications use a small native launcher that starts a larger emulated process; others keep licensing, synchronization or update functions in separate helpers. Expand the process tree where Task Manager provides one, and repeat the check while performing the important operation.
Architecture also does not measure speed. An x64 application can be perfectly usable for a light task, while a native Arm64 application can still perform poorly because of a plug-in, a network service or an unsupported device. Treat the label as an execution classification, then use a workflow test to judge whether the PC meets your needs.

Confirm the result with the publisher
Use the label as evidence, then check the publisher’s support page or release notes for the exact version. Look specifically for “Windows on Arm,” “Arm64,” “Arm64EC,” driver requirements and known limitations. Ask support whether your plug-ins, add-ins, services and licensing components are supported, not merely whether the main application installs.
Microsoft’s Windows on Arm documentation and FAQ distinguish between an app that launches and a workflow that is fully supported. If the vendor offers separate packages, choose the Arm64 package for a Snapdragon X PC. A Microsoft Store package may select an architecture-specific build automatically, but confirm what was installed when native execution matters.
For business-critical software, Microsoft points readers to App Assure and its Arm Advisory Service. Availability and eligibility depend on the program and your organization; do not assume consumer access or guaranteed remediation.
Use compatibility lists as leads, not proof
Microsoft points to Works on WoA, an evolving open-source list containing community and Microsoft-contributed compatibility data. It can reveal whether people have reported success or a known problem, but entries can lag behind an app update and may not cover your plug-ins or hardware.

Test the workflow that matters
Architecture labels do not measure every feature. Use a short, repeatable acceptance test after installing updates.
- Launch the application from a normal shortcut and from any file type or integration you rely on.
- Open a representative project or document, including large files and the plug-ins used in production.
- Exercise hardware paths such as printing, scanning, audio capture, cameras, smart-card readers or external storage.
- Test sign-in, licensing, network shares, cloud synchronization and background notifications.
- Run the task that determines whether you can adopt the PC: export a deliverable, render media, compile code, join a meeting or play the specific game.
- Close and reopen the app, restart Windows, and repeat any step that depends on a service or driver.
Watch Task Manager for helper processes as you test. Note crashes, missing devices, unusual latency and functions that are disabled. A successful launch is not enough if the required driver or plug-in cannot operate.

Understand the driver boundary
Microsoft Learn states: “Note that emulation only supports user mode code and doesn’t support drivers.” Windows can emulate x86 and x64 application code in user mode, but it cannot translate an x86 or x64 kernel-mode driver into an Arm driver.

Any required kernel component must be built for Arm64. This is why an application may open yet fail when it accesses a device or protected system feature. Check Arm64 driver availability for:
- Printers, scanners and multifunction devices
- Audio, video-capture and specialized production hardware
- Security keys, smart-card readers and biometric devices
- Virtualization, storage-filter and backup software
- Game anti-cheat systems
- VPN, firewall and endpoint-security products
Microsoft’s peripheral guidance says a device must use a built-in Windows driver or a driver supplied for Arm64. Follow the manufacturer’s Arm-specific installation instructions; an x64-only driver package is not made compatible by running its installer under emulation.
Known categories that need extra checking
Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ calls out several areas where support is uneven:
- Games: some titles depend on anti-cheat drivers that are not designed for Arm PCs.
- Windows customization: certain input method editors, assistive technologies and cloud-storage integrations can have problems.
- Security software: some third-party antivirus products cannot be installed because their system components lack Arm support.
- Faxing and scanning: Windows Fax and Scan is unavailable on a Windows 11 Arm PC; a compatible alternative and driver are required.
- Specialized hardware: missing Arm64 drivers can leave a device partially functional even when its companion application is emulated successfully.
These are categories for investigation, not a blanket statement that every product in them fails. Check the exact release, driver and device combination.

An installer completing only proves that the setup program ran far enough to copy files and register components. It does not prove that a service started, a filter driver loaded, a device was detected or a protected feature works. If setup offers optional components, record which ones were selected and check whether any are marked as unsupported on Arm.
For Store applications, Windows may choose among architecture-specific packages automatically. For traditional desktop software, download pages can offer x86, x64 and Arm64 builds with similar names. Select Arm64 when available, but keep the installer version and source in your notes. An Arm64 main package can still download an x64 plug-in or helper later.

Adjust Prism emulation when an x86 or x64 app misbehaves
On supported Windows 11 builds, Windows exposes per-application Prism controls. They are troubleshooting options, not a way to turn an emulated program into a native one.
- Close the application.
- Locate its executable or shortcut, right-click it and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Under Windows on Arm, choose Change emulation settings.
- Try the documented presets—Default, Safe, Strict or Very strict—or use the available advanced controls.
- Apply the change, relaunch the application and repeat the workflow test.
Stricter settings can improve compatibility for some instructions or behaviors, but they can reduce performance. Microsoft warns that a setting change can make an application crash or stop launching. If behavior gets worse, return to Default, then update Windows and the application before trying another change.
Troubleshoot in a controlled order
When an emulated application fails, change one variable at a time. First install the latest Windows updates and the current application release. Then reinstall or update the publisher’s Arm64 driver, if one exists, and disconnect optional peripherals to see whether one device is responsible. Test with plug-ins and add-ins disabled, because a native host can load an incompatible x64 extension.
If the application still fails, record the exact error, process architecture, Windows build, app version and the operation that triggered it. Try the Prism preset only after those basics. Apply one preset, restart the app and repeat the same test. If a stricter setting causes a crash or prevents launch, return to Default. This sequence makes it easier for the publisher to reproduce the issue and avoids mistaking a changed emulation setting for a permanent compatibility result.
A practical decision rule
Classify the application only after combining architecture, dependencies and testing:

Keep a compatibility record
For software you depend on, keep a short record containing the Windows edition, version and build; PC model; app version and package type; Task Manager labels for the main process and helpers; driver versions; connected hardware; and the date of your workflow test. Note whether the result was native, mixed Arm64EC or emulated, and list any limitations. This record gives you a baseline after an update and provides useful detail when contacting support.

Recheck after updates
Windows on Arm support is evolving. A new app release may add Arm64 or Arm64EC code; a Windows update may change Prism behavior; a device firmware update may add or remove driver support. Revisit the publisher’s compatibility notes and repeat the acceptance test after a major Windows, application or driver update. Keep the OS build, app version, architecture label and test result together so you can identify what changed.

The reliable answer to “does this run natively?” is therefore specific: identify the executable, read its Task Manager architecture, inspect its helpers and drivers, verify the publisher’s support statement, and test the workflow you actually need. Do not infer native execution merely because an installer completes or the application opens.

Can I run my Windows apps on my Windows 11 Arm-based PC?
Usually, yes. Windows 11 on Arm runs native Arm64 applications and emulates x86 and x64 user-mode applications. Check the app’s process architecture, then verify plug-ins, services, hardware and drivers for the exact version you use.
Does ARM64 (x64 compatible) mean the whole app is native?

What limitations should I be aware of when running a Windows 11 Arm-based PC?

How do I troubleshoot an x86 or x64 app that crashes?
Update Windows and the app first. Then check drivers and plug-ins, and test the workflow with optional components disconnected or disabled. If needed, use Properties → Compatibility → Windows on Arm → Change emulation settings, testing Default, Safe, Strict or Very strict one at a time. Revert to Default if the app crashes or stops launching.
Is an app that launches successfully compatible?
Not necessarily. Test the actual work you need, including files, plug-ins, sign-in, cloud synchronization, printing, scanning, audio or cameras, network shares and any required service or driver.
How often should I recheck compatibility?
Repeat the check after a major Windows, application, driver or device-firmware update. Architecture and support can change as publishers add Arm64 or Arm64EC code or update dependencies.
The Bottom Line
