Use three checks, in this order: identify the installed Windows 11 version and edition, verify what Windows Update has installed, then compare that version-and-edition combination with Microsoft’s servicing dates. A page that says “You’re up to date” only means that currently offered updates installed; it does not prove that your Windows release is still within its support lifecycle.

The three checks that answer the question

  1. Identify the installation: record both the Windows 11 version (such as 24H2) and edition (such as Home, Pro, Enterprise or Education).
  2. Check update activity: use Windows Update to see whether applicable updates are offered or installed, and use Update history to verify installation records.
  3. Check the lifecycle: compare your exact version and edition with Microsoft’s end-of-updates date. Only this comparison tells you whether the release is still entitled to monthly security updates.

Do not treat a missing feature-upgrade offer as proof that security updates stopped. Microsoft can delay a feature release during a controlled rollout or place a compatibility safeguard hold on a particular device.

1. Find your exact Windows 11 version and edition

Version numbers and editions are separate facts. Microsoft can give the same Windows 11 version different servicing dates for consumer and organizational editions, so write down both values before checking support.

Use Settings

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Choose System, then select About.
  3. Scroll to Windows specifications.
  4. Record the values beside Edition and Version. You may also see the OS build; it is useful when diagnosing an update, but the version and edition determine the lifecycle comparison.

Microsoft documents this path in its Windows 11 version information and update-history guidance.

Use the quicker winver check

  1. Select the taskbar Search box.
  2. Type winver and press Enter.
  3. Read the Windows dialog and note the version shown there. Return to Settings > System > About if you also need the edition.

Do not record only “Windows 11.” A result such as “Windows 11 Home, version 24H2” is the minimum information needed for an accurate servicing check. If the PC is joined to an organization, confirm the edition with your administrator when the displayed information is unclear; organization-managed devices can follow policies that differ from a personal PC.

2. Verify that Windows Update is installing offered updates

This check answers a narrower question: whether Windows Update has downloaded and installed updates that Microsoft is currently offering to your device. It does not replace the lifecycle check in the next section.

Check the current Windows Update status

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Read the resulting status and let any offered update complete its download, installation and required restart.

Windows Update is Microsoft’s delivery channel for the current cumulative update. Microsoft’s September 2026 update notice explains the deployment channel and distinguishes ordinary Windows Update delivery from policies configured by an organization; see the KB5124008 update notice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read Update history

  1. Remain in Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Update history.
  3. Review the newest entries, including quality updates, cumulative updates and any failed or pending installations.

A recent successful cumulative update shows that an update was installed. An entry marked failed, pending restart or requiring attention explains why the latest offered package may not yet be active. Update history is evidence of installation activity; it is not a list of the dates on which your Windows version will stop receiving security fixes.

What common status messages do and do not prove

What you see What it establishes What it does not establish
“You’re up to date” after checking No newer update currently offered through that Windows Update configuration was found, or the offered updates have installed. That the installed version is still within Microsoft’s support lifecycle.
A cumulative update downloading or installing Windows Update is processing an applicable package. That every feature version is available immediately.
A recent successful entry in Update history The listed update reached the installed state. That future monthly updates will continue after the version’s end-of-updates date.
No feature upgrade is offered The upgrade may not yet be available to this device, or a compatibility safeguard may be holding it back. That monthly security updates have stopped.

3. Compare the version and edition with Microsoft’s servicing dates

Use the version and edition you recorded, not just the OS build or the date shown on the Windows Update page. Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 notice lists these dates for Windows 11 version 24H2:

Installed release Edition Microsoft’s listed servicing position
Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro End of updates: October 13, 2026.
Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise and Education End of updates: October 12, 2027.

Those dates come from Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 KB5124010 notice. The edition is decisive: a 24H2 Home or Pro installation and a 24H2 Enterprise or Education installation do not reach the end of updates on the same day.

If the applicable date has passed, the release is outside that lifecycle. It no longer receives the monthly security updates and protections tied to that version, even if Windows Update reports that all currently offered updates are installed. Microsoft’s guidance is: “To stay protected and up to date, we recommend you upgrade to the latest version of Windows 11.”

How 26H2 support is described

Microsoft’s version 26H2 documentation gives support durations rather than one universal Windows 11 deadline:

Windows 11 26H2 edition Published support duration How to use the figure
Home and Pro 24 months Count the support period from the release’s applicable servicing start; do not apply the Enterprise/Education duration to these editions.
Enterprise and Education 36 months These editions receive the longer published servicing period.

See Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 26H2 update history for the edition-specific durations and rollout information. A support duration is not a promise that every device will be offered the feature release on the same day.

Interpret the result without confusing “up to date” with “supported”

Your finding Meaning Next action
Windows Update is current and your version/edition is before its listed end date The PC is receiving the updates currently offered to it and remains within the published lifecycle. Keep checking Windows Update and review Update history after installations.
Windows Update is current, but your version/edition is past its listed end date “Up to date” describes the last offered package, not continued entitlement to monthly security updates. Move to a supported Windows 11 version as soon as the device is eligible.
A feature upgrade is absent while monthly updates continue The feature release may be in a controlled rollout or blocked by a safeguard hold. Check Windows Update again later and consult Microsoft’s release-health information; do not bypass a compatibility hold.
Update history shows a failed or incomplete cumulative update The latest offered update may not be fully installed. Follow the status message, complete a requested restart, then run Check for updates again. If the PC is managed, ask the administrator about the configured policy.
The edition is Enterprise or Education but the PC is being treated like Home or Pro The wrong servicing row may have been used for the comparison. Recheck Settings > System > About and compare with the Enterprise/Education date.

What to do when 24H2 Home or Pro is past its date

For a personal PC running Windows 11 24H2 Home or Pro, the listed end-of-updates date is October 13, 2026. Once that date has passed, remaining on 24H2 does not provide the monthly security servicing associated with an in-support release.

  1. Confirm the result in Settings > System > About, including the edition.
  2. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
  3. If Windows 11 26H2 is offered for the PC, follow the on-screen installation and restart instructions.
  4. If no feature upgrade is offered, check Microsoft’s 26H2 update-history and release-health information for eligibility, known issues or a safeguard hold.
  5. Do not force an installation by bypassing a safeguard hold. The hold exists because Microsoft has detected a known compatibility concern; wait for the offer to become available or obtain guidance from the PC manufacturer or administrator.

Microsoft’s 26H2 update-history page says the release is being delivered through a controlled feature rollout to eligible PCs running 24H2 or 25H2. Eligibility and timing therefore vary by device.

Why Windows 11 26H2 may not appear yet

Controlled rollout

Microsoft does not make a feature release appear on every eligible PC simultaneously. A staged rollout lets Microsoft monitor compatibility and deployment results. A PC can therefore continue receiving its currently applicable cumulative updates while 26H2 is not yet displayed in Windows Update.

Safeguard holds

Microsoft can temporarily withhold 26H2 when it detects a known hardware, driver or software compatibility issue. The absence of an offer is not, by itself, evidence that the PC is abandoned or that security updates have stopped. Check the release-health information linked from Microsoft’s 26H2 documentation, and do not use an unsupported bypass to force the upgrade.

26H1 is a different case

Windows 11 26H1 is not the normal in-place upgrade target for an existing Windows 11 computer. Microsoft says 26H1 is available only on new devices with select new silicon and is not offered through Windows Update as an in-place update to earlier Windows 11 PCs. If a typical existing PC does not show 26H1, that is expected; check its supported upgrade path instead. Details are in Microsoft’s 26H1 update history.

Managed business and school PCs

Windows Update on a work or school computer can be governed by organizational policies. The administrator may control update timing, defer feature releases or use a management service rather than the same consumer-facing schedule. Microsoft distinguishes these managed policies from the ordinary Windows Update channel in its KB5124008 documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use Settings > System > About to record the installed version and edition yourself.
  • Use Windows Update > Update history to see what the device reports as installed.
  • If the device says it is managed, or if an update is deferred by policy, ask the organization’s IT administrator for its servicing schedule.
  • Still compare the installed version and edition with Microsoft’s lifecycle dates; management policy can delay installation, but it does not extend an expired Microsoft servicing lifecycle.

Troubleshooting the three-check process

You cannot find the version number

Use the alternate winver route from taskbar Search. If you still cannot establish the version, do not guess from the build number or from the PC’s purchase date; the lifecycle comparison requires the displayed Windows version and edition.

Windows Update says no updates are available, but Update history is old

Run Check for updates again and inspect the newest Update history entry for a failed installation or a restart requirement. If the PC is managed, the delay may reflect its configured policy. A stale history does not prove that the release has reached end of support; use the version-and-edition lifecycle comparison separately.

The feature update is missing after the lifecycle date

First verify that the PC is actually on the affected version and edition. Then check Microsoft’s 26H2 rollout and safeguard information. A controlled rollout can delay an offer, and a safeguard hold can prevent it temporarily. Do not interpret the missing offer as permission to install 26H1 on an existing PC or as a reason to bypass a compatibility block.

You see a recent cumulative update but are unsure whether it is a security update

Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and read the update entry. The cumulative-update channel carries the applicable monthly fixes for a supported release. Whether future security servicing continues still depends on the release’s edition-specific end date.

Details that prevent a false conclusion

The date shown beside a recent update and the lifecycle end date answer different questions. The first tells you when a package was published or installed; the second tells you how long Microsoft intends to service the version and edition. Neither the PC’s purchase date nor an OS build number can replace the version-and-edition comparison.

A successful update today is useful evidence that the configured update channel is working. It is not a guarantee that another cumulative update will be offered after the applicable end-of-updates date. Conversely, a delayed feature upgrade does not automatically indicate a broken update system: Microsoft may be staging the release or protecting the device with a safeguard hold.

For a personal PC, check again after the monthly update cycle and whenever Windows Update displays a restart, failure or compatibility message. For a work or school PC, record what Windows reports but ask the administrator for the organization’s deployment schedule before changing update settings.

A repeatable monthly check

For a personal Windows 11 PC, repeat this short routine after Microsoft’s monthly updates or whenever you notice an unexpected delay:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Record Edition and Version under Settings > System > About.
  • Run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
  • Open Update history and confirm whether the newest offered cumulative update succeeded.
  • Compare the recorded version-and-edition pair with Microsoft’s current servicing dates.
  • Check Microsoft’s release-health information if a feature upgrade is not offered, and distinguish a safeguard hold from an update failure.

The practical test

Your Windows 11 PC is still receiving security updates only when both conditions are true: Windows Update is successfully installing applicable updates, and the exact version-and-edition combination is still within Microsoft’s servicing lifecycle. On October 13, 2026, Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reached the listed end of updates; 24H2 Enterprise and Education have the later date shown above. Check the edition, check Update history and then use Microsoft’s lifecycle information to decide whether the installation needs to move to a newer supported release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “You’re up to date” prove that my Windows 11 PC is supported?

No. It means Windows Update found no newer update currently offered through that configuration, or that offered updates installed successfully. Compare your exact version and edition with Microsoft’s servicing date as a separate step.

What is the end-of-updates date for Windows 11 24H2?

Microsoft lists October 13, 2026, for 24H2 Home and Pro. Enterprise and Education editions have the later listed date of October 12, 2027.

Why is Windows 11 26H2 missing from Windows Update?

Microsoft is delivering 26H2 through a controlled rollout, and a safeguard hold can temporarily block a device with a known compatibility issue. Check Windows Update and Microsoft’s release-health information later, and do not bypass the hold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should an existing PC install Windows 11 26H1 instead?

No. Microsoft says 26H1 is available only on new devices with select new silicon and is not offered through Windows Update as an in-place update to earlier Windows 11 PCs.

How do I check the Windows edition as well as the version?

Open Settings, choose System, select About and read Edition and Version under Windows specifications. The winver command is a quick way to see the version, but return to About when you need the edition.

What should I do after a failed cumulative update?

Read Update history for the failure or pending-restart message, complete any requested restart and run Check for updates again. On a managed PC, ask the administrator whether policy controls the timing.

Do I need a special utility, USB drive or accessory to perform this check?

No. The check uses built-in Settings, Windows Update, Update history and the winver command. Hardware or third-party software is not required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I repeat the check?

Repeat it after the monthly update cycle and whenever an update fails, a restart is requested or a feature upgrade does not appear. Managed devices should also be checked against the organization’s schedule.

The Bottom Line

Check Settings > System > About for both Edition and Version, verify installation in Windows Update > Update history, and compare that pair with Microsoft’s lifecycle dates. “Up to date” and “still supported” are separate conclusions.
