To check quickly, search Google for site:example.com or a particular URL with site:https://example.com/path/to/page. A result is evidence that the URL appears in Google Search, but no result does not prove it is absent from Google’s index. For a page you manage, use Google Search Console’s URL Inspection tool for its reported status and diagnostics.
How do I check if my website is indexed by Google?
There are two useful checks, and they answer slightly different questions. A Google site: search is a quick, public clue that some pages from a domain or URL prefix appear in Search. Search Console’s URL Inspection tool is the more reliable way to diagnose a particular URL you manage. For site-wide patterns, check the Page Indexing report rather than treating search results as a complete inventory.

Google explains that search operators have indexing and retrieval limits, so URL Inspection is more reliable for debugging. See Google’s guidance on the site search operator and how to use Search Console.
Search for a whole domain
- Open Google Search.
- Enter
site:example.com, replacingexample.comwith your domain. - Review any results. They are examples of pages appearing in Search, not a complete list of the site’s indexed pages.
Search for one known URL
- Enter
site:https://example.com/path/to/page, replacing the example with the URL you want to check. - Look for the page in the results. The URL-prefix form can help focus the query on a particular address.
- If Google shows the page, it is appearing in Search. If it shows nothing, use URL Inspection before concluding that the page is not indexed.
Do not use the number of results shown for a site: query as a count of every URL Google has indexed. Google does not guarantee that all indexed URLs will appear in these results. The operator is useful when you want a fast public indication, but it is not a full index database: a result count or a short list cannot tell you exactly how many of your pages are indexed.

How to inspect a specific page in Search Console
For a page you own or manage, URL Inspection provides Google’s reported status for that URL and can help identify why it is not appearing. You need access to the Search Console property that includes the page.
- Open the relevant property in Google Search Console.
- Open URL Inspection and enter the page’s full URL.
- Read the reported index status and any details or reason provided. This checks Google’s information about the URL; it is not the same as a Google search for the page.
- If you need to know whether Google can access the page now, use the option to test the live URL.
- After correcting a problem, request crawling for that individual URL if appropriate. Search Console permits a property owner or full user to request it.
Use the exact page address you want to diagnose, rather than relying on a check for the domain as a whole. URL Inspection is page-level: it can help answer whether this particular URL is reported as indexed and surface information about its status. It does not tell you that every other page on the site has the same outcome. If several pages are missing, inspect representative URLs and then look for a common pattern in the Page Indexing report.
The live URL test helps check current accessibility; it does not establish that Google has already indexed the page. Likewise, a request to crawl is a request for Google to revisit the URL, not a command that puts it into Search. Google’s Search Console guide describes URL Inspection and the Page Indexing report.

What the indexing status does—and does not—mean
Google’s process involves distinct stages. Googlebot may discover a URL, crawl it (fetch its content), and then evaluate whether to include it in the index. Crawling is not indexing: a successful fetch does not guarantee that Google will include the page. A page may also be indexed without appearing for every search query; indexing means it is eligible to be considered for Search, not that it will rank prominently or show for a particular phrase.
This distinction helps avoid two common misreadings. A crawl or a successful live URL test tells you something about Google’s ability to fetch the page, not whether the page has been added to the index. Conversely, an empty site: search is not enough to show that crawling failed or that a technical block exists. Use the status and diagnostics in URL Inspection to investigate the specific URL, and use the reports for broader patterns.
Use URL Inspection to check the individual page’s reported index status, and the Page Indexing report to look for broader site patterns. Crawl Stats can complement those checks by showing information about Google’s crawling and access activity; it is not a list of indexed pages. What Google needs before it can index a page
Google’s technical minimums are that the page is accessible to Googlebot, returns a successful HTTP 200 response, and contains indexable content. These are eligibility conditions, not a promise of inclusion. Google states: “Just because your page meets these requirements doesn’t mean that it will be indexed; indexing isn’t guaranteed.” See Google’s technical requirements.

- Googlebot can access the URL. A crawl block or access failure can stop Google from fetching the page.
- The server returns HTTP 200. A URL that returns an error or another response is not meeting this stated technical minimum.
- The content is indexable. The page must not instruct Google not to index it, and it must provide content that can be indexed.
Meeting all three conditions only makes a page eligible; it does not force Google to crawl it at a particular time or include it. Google’s overview of how to get information on Google provides additional context on appearing in Search.
When checking a page that is missing, treat these requirements as a sequence of things to verify, not as a checklist that guarantees a result. First confirm that Googlebot is not prevented from fetching the URL. Then confirm that the response is successful and that the page contains the content you intend Google to evaluate. Finally, check that there is no instruction telling Google not to index it. A page can satisfy these technical minimums and still not be included, so the status report remains important after you have checked the basics.
Robots.txt and noindex are different controls
These mechanisms are easy to confuse because both can affect whether a page appears in Search, but they work differently.
robots.txtcontrols crawling. A rule that blocks Googlebot from fetching a URL can prevent Google from reading the page.noindexcontrols indexing. A robots meta tag or an HTTPX-Robots-Tagheader can tell Google not to index a page after Googlebot has accessed and read that instruction.
If robots.txt blocks a URL, Google may not be able to see a noindex directive on that page. So, if the goal is to remove a crawlable page from Search with noindex, do not simultaneously prevent Googlebot from fetching the instruction. If a page you intend to publish is missing, check both controls: confirm that robots rules do not prevent the necessary crawl and that the page does not carry an unintended noindex directive. If you deliberately do not want a page indexed, make sure Google can access the page to read its noindex instruction.
The practical pitfall is to use a crawl block when you mean to use an indexing instruction, or to assume a blocked page’s noindex rule has been read. These are not interchangeable controls. Before changing either one, be clear about the intended outcome: allowing Google to crawl an eligible page, or keeping a page out of Search while allowing Google to read the instruction.
Why isn’t my page showing up in Google Search?
Start with the status and reason shown for the URL in URL Inspection rather than changing several settings at once. Then check the underlying condition that could prevent discovery, crawling, or indexing.

Google cannot access or fetch the URL
Check that the URL is not blocked from Googlebot in robots.txt, that the server responds successfully, and that the page is reachable. If Googlebot cannot fetch a page, it cannot read its content or any indexing instructions placed there. Compare URL Inspection’s reported information with a live URL test when you need to check current access.

Inspect the page for a robots meta directive or an HTTP X-Robots-Tag header that says noindex. Remove or correct the instruction if the page should be eligible for Search, then allow Googlebot to access the URL so it can read the change. If the directive is intentional, the page is being told not to appear in the index.
The URL works, but the content is not eligible or not included
A 200 response alone does not establish that a page is indexed. Check that the response contains the intended page and indexable content, not just an empty or error-like result. If the technical requirements are satisfied, Google may still choose not to include the URL; eligibility does not guarantee indexing.
Only some URLs are affected
Inspect a representative URL that is missing and compare its status and technical setup with a similar page that appears. Then use the Page Indexing report to see whether the issue appears across a group of pages or is isolated. Crawl Stats can add context about crawl activity, but it should not be read as proof of index inclusion.
If the report points to a wider pattern, avoid assuming that one fix or one successful test settles every URL. Check more than one affected page and compare the results. If only one URL differs, focus on that page’s access, response, and indexing instructions. If a group shows a similar problem, use the report to identify the pattern and check whether those pages share the same underlying setup.
When to request crawling—and what to expect
Request a crawl after correcting the reason a page could not be accessed or indexed, or when you have made a meaningful change that Google needs to revisit. In Search Console, use URL Inspection for the individual URL and request indexing from there. A Search Console owner or full user can make this request.
Google says recrawling can take days to weeks, and not every submitted URL will be included. There is no universal indexing deadline. Repeated requests do not guarantee a faster result, so verify that the underlying page is correct and accessible instead of relying on repeated submissions. Requesting a crawl is most useful after the page is ready for Google to revisit. If it is still blocked, returning an unsuccessful response, or carrying an unintended noindex, a request does not correct that underlying condition. Make the relevant fix first, then use the request as a prompt to revisit the URL. Afterward, check the status again rather than treating the request itself as confirmation that the page is indexed.
Use a sitemap for discovery across many URLs
If you have a new site or many URLs for Google to discover, a sitemap can help Google learn about those URLs. It is a discovery aid, not an indexing command: submitting one does not guarantee that Google will crawl every listed page, do so on a particular schedule, or include every URL in Search. For one known page, URL Inspection is the more direct page-level diagnostic. For site-wide indexing patterns, use the Page Indexing report.
A sitemap and URL Inspection serve different purposes. The sitemap can help Google discover many URLs; URL Inspection is the more direct way to check a page you manage and request a crawl for that individual address. Neither changes the basic eligibility requirements or promises that Google will include a URL. Do not interpret sitemap submission as proof that every listed page has been crawled or indexed.

Open Search Console, inspect its full URL, and review the reported status. Test the live URL if you need to assess current accessibility.
- Need to find a site-wide pattern? Check the Page Indexing report, then use URL Inspection on affected URLs. Consult Crawl Stats for complementary crawl and access context.
- Found a technical problem? Correct the access, HTTP response, or indexing instruction before requesting a crawl.
- Corrected the problem but still see no result? Allow time for Google to revisit and process the page. A crawl request or sitemap submission cannot guarantee indexing.
In short, separate the question “Is this URL appearing in Search?” from “Can Google fetch it now?” and from “Is it included in the index?” A public site: search can help with the first question, URL Inspection is the stronger page-level diagnostic, and reports help you see whether a problem extends across the site. Using the check that matches the question prevents an incomplete search result or a successful fetch from being mistaken for a complete indexing diagnosis.

Does a Google site: search show every indexed page?
No. Google’s site search operator is subject to indexing and retrieval limits and does not guarantee that every indexed URL will appear. Do not treat its result count as a complete inventory.
What is the difference between crawling and indexing?
Crawling means Googlebot fetched a URL; indexing is the separate decision to include a page in Google’s index. A successful crawl or live URL test does not guarantee inclusion.
Why is my page missing if it returns HTTP 200?
A successful response is only one technical minimum. Google also needs to be able to access the page and find indexable content, and meeting those requirements still does not guarantee indexing. Check URL Inspection and the page’s robots and noindex settings.

No. A sitemap can help Google discover URLs, and a request can prompt Google to revisit an individual URL, but neither guarantees crawling on a particular schedule or inclusion. Google says recrawling may take days to weeks.
Can robots.txt and noindex be used interchangeably?
