To check whether your VPN connection uses post-quantum protection, look for evidence from the active connection—not just a VPN app’s general security claims. For WireGuard, check whether a pre-shared key (PSK) is configured and confirm how your provider derives or exchanges it. For OpenVPN Access Server, inspect the connected session’s logs for a negotiated key-agreement value such as X25519MLKEM768. The exact check depends on the VPN protocol and provider.

What counts as evidence of post-quantum protection?

The strongest evidence is a documented indicator for the active connection: a negotiated key-agreement value in a session log, or a provider-specific app status whose meaning is explained by that provider. A setting that merely allows a post-quantum group, a connected VPN icon, or a general claim that the service supports quantum resistance does not establish what the current session negotiated.

This check concerns how the VPN tunnel establishes keys. It does not show that every connection beyond the VPN server—for example, a separate connection from that server to a website—also has post-quantum protection.

  • WireGuard: a configured PSK is a useful local check, but you also need the provider’s explanation of how the PSK is generated and delivered.
  • OpenVPN Access Server: inspect the active session’s negotiated key-agreement value, rather than relying only on a configured list of allowed groups.
  • Consumer apps: an explicit quantum-resistance status can help, but applies only to that provider’s implementation and the app version in use.

Check a WireGuard connection for a pre-shared key

WireGuard supports an optional PSK that is mixed into its public-key cryptography for an additional symmetric-key layer. The protocol documentation describes this as a possible post-quantum measure. When PSK mode is unused, WireGuard uses an all-zero 32-byte value. Therefore, finding a configured PSK is meaningful—but it does not, by itself, prove that a post-quantum key encapsulation mechanism (KEM) was used to create or deliver that key.

Inspect the active interface

  1. Install the WireGuard tools for your operating system if they are not already available.

  2. Open a terminal with administrator privileges and run wg. Identify the active interface and look for preshared key: (hidden). The hidden value indicates that a PSK is configured; do not try to reveal, copy, or share the secret.

  3. To inspect the interface configuration, run wg showconf INTERFACE_NAME, replacing INTERFACE_NAME with the actual interface name. A PresharedKey line indicates the field is configured. Do not publish the output: configuration details can include secrets.

    • 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.
  4. Check your VPN provider’s documentation for how it generates and delivers the PSK. A generic configured PSK is not enough to establish that a post-quantum KEM contributed to it.

IVPN’s self-audit guide describes the wg and wg showconf checks above. Its separate documentation describes its own KEM-derived WireGuard PSK process; that provider-specific implementation should not be assumed for other services. See IVPN’s WireGuard configuration self-audit, its quantum resistance FAQ, and its instructions for generating quantum-resistant WireGuard keys manually.

Why packet inspection is not the check

Encrypted tunnel traffic does not reveal the PSK setting or establish whether a post-quantum KEM contributed to key generation. Wireshark is therefore not a substitute for checking local WireGuard state and the provider’s documented key process.

Confirm compatibility before connecting

In the Access Server setup documented by OpenVPN, the server requires OpenSSL 3.5 or newer, and the client must support the selected group. The tutorial says OpenVPN Connect v3 does not support OpenSSL 3.5 in that setup. It also notes that Linux OpenVPN 2 clients may need tls-groups "X25519MLKEM768" in the profile. These compatibility details can change, so consult the current Access Server instructions and client compatibility information before changing a deployment.

If the server permits only a post-quantum group, a client that does not support it may fail to connect. OpenVPN’s tutorial gives a compatibility configuration that permits both X25519MLKEM768 and classical X25519. For FIPS mode, it lists SecP256r1MLKEM768 and SecP384r1MLKEM1024. Client and server group settings need to agree.

Use consumer app indicators only within their scope

Some VPN apps expose a quantum-resistance status or explain how their own tunnels use post-quantum key establishment. Treat the indicator as evidence about that provider’s implementation and the installed app version—not as a general VPN standard. Check the provider’s current help material if the label, setting, or default matters to your connection.

IVPN

IVPN says its apps provide quantum-resistant WireGuard connections by default. Its FAQ lists these paths to WireGuard key information: on desktop, Settings → Connection → WireGuard key information; on mobile, Settings → WireGuard → WireGuard details. The same FAQ describes the KEM algorithms used in its desktop and mobile apps and says key rotation can be configured from 1 to 30 days. These are IVPN-specific app and service details, not evidence about another provider’s connection. Check the IVPN FAQ for current behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mullvad

Mullvad’s help material describes a connected-state “Quantum resistance” indicator and setting. Its announcements documented an iOS indicator in August 2024 and said desktop platforms enabled the feature by default in app release 2025.2 in January 2025. Those dated statements describe Mullvad’s app at the time; consult its current app help to check the status and controls in the version you use. The historical announcements are the iOS announcement and the desktop-default announcement.

What ML-KEM does—and does not—tell you

ML-KEM is the standardized name for a post-quantum key-encapsulation mechanism specified in NIST’s FIPS 203. NIST published its post-quantum cryptography standards in August 2024 and advises organizations to begin migrating to quantum-resistant cryptography. The name can help you interpret a negotiated log value or a provider’s technical description, but the standard’s existence does not prove that your VPN used ML-KEM in a particular session. Look for session-level evidence or a provider-specific status with documented meaning.

For background, see NIST’s post-quantum cryptography project and its post-quantum cryptography overview.
