Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Valheim servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The most reliable host-side sign that a Valheim dedicated server is online is the console message “Game server connected.” Iron Gate says that this message means the server is running and ready to accept connections. You must then test the connection method that matches your server’s backend: Steam servers depend on an Internet-reachable port range, while Crossplay servers use a relay and can be joined with a code, server listing, or supported IP-and-port connection.
A server can therefore be running without appearing in the browser, and a player can still be refused because of a password, ban list, permitted list, firewall, port-forwarding mistake, or platform mismatch. Use the checks below in order so you do not troubleshoot the player’s connection before confirming that the host is ready.
Recommended Free Tools
Start with the host console
Open the window running the Valheim dedicated-server program and read its latest status messages. The decisive readiness signal is the exact line “Game server connected.” Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide explains: “When the Server program shows the message ‘Game server connected’ the Server is up and running, ready to accept connections.” See the official dedicated-server guide.
Treat this as a two-part test:
- Host readiness: the console reaches “Game server connected.”
- Player reachability: a player can use the correct join path for the server’s backend and platform.
If the message never appears, the server is not yet ready even if a window opened or a startup script is still running. Keep the investigation on the host before changing a player’s game settings.

If the message never appears
- Review the launch script and the paths it references. A wrong executable or world path can stop startup before the server finishes loading.
- Read the console for startup errors rather than assuming that a quiet window means the server is online.
- Confirm that the host has Internet access.
- Check whether Windows displayed a firewall permission prompt. Iron Gate recommends allowing the server application through Windows Firewall when Windows asks for permission.
- Restart only after recording the latest error, so you can tell whether the same failure returns.
Do not use a player’s “failed to connect” message as proof that the host failed to start. First establish whether the console reached the readiness line.
Identify the server backend before testing a connection
Valheim dedicated servers use either the Steam backend or the Crossplay backend. The launch configuration determines which one is active, and that choice changes the required network path and who can join. The official Crossplay FAQ is available at Valheim’s Crossplay FAQ.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Steam backend
A dedicated server started without -crossplay uses the Steam backend. For this arrangement, the default port range is 2456–2457. Both ports in the range must be reachable from the Internet through port forwarding, and the host firewall must permit the server traffic. These requirements are documented in Iron Gate’s dedicated-server instructions.
When checking a Steam server, use the server browser if it is public, or test with the public IP address and port when the browser is not the intended route. A server can report “Game server connected” locally while remaining unreachable because the forwarding rule points to the wrong computer, covers only one port, or is blocked by a firewall.
Crossplay backend
A dedicated server started with -crossplay uses Valheim’s Crossplay backend. Crossplay uses a relay, so external port forwarding is not required. Players can use a join code, a server listing, or a public IP and port where supported by the official instructions. Do not apply the Steam port-forwarding diagnosis to a Crossplay server as if it were mandatory; first verify that Crossplay was actually enabled at launch.
Crossplay is also the requirement for non-Steam players, including Xbox users, to join a dedicated server. An Xbox player cannot run the standalone dedicated-server application, but can join a dedicated server when that server is running with Crossplay enabled. The platform details are covered in the Crossplay FAQ.

Test the correct join method
Once the console says “Game server connected,” test the path your players are expected to use. A join code, browser listing, and IP-and-port connection are separate access methods; success with one does not prove that another is configured correctly.
In-game hosted world or Crossplay server: use a join code
- Have the host open the in-game pause menu.
- Copy the displayed join code.
- On the joining player’s device, open Join Game > Add server.
- Paste the code and attempt to join.
This is the clearest player-side test for a Crossplay session when the host can provide the current code. It avoids relying on a browser result that may be affected by visibility settings. If the code does not work, return to the console and backend checks rather than repeatedly regenerating codes without identifying the underlying failure.
Public dedicated server: check the browser
The launch setting -public 1 makes a dedicated server visible in the server browser. Search for the configured server name and confirm that the listing corresponds to the host you started. Browser visibility is an advertisement of the server, not a replacement for the console readiness message: a listing should be investigated alongside the host console, not instead of it.
If the server was started with -public 0, it is hidden from the browser by design. A hidden server may be completely healthy. Join it through Join IP using the appropriate address and port instead of treating its absence from the list as an outage.
Steam server: test the public address and port
For a Steam-backend server, test the public IP address and the configured port after confirming that the 2456–2457 range is forwarded to the correct host. The official guide identifies this range as the default and requires Internet reachability through port forwarding. A local test from the same network may not reproduce an external player’s route, so test from the network where the real player is located when possible.
Crossplay server: test code, list, or supported address
For Crossplay, start by confirming that -crossplay is present in the launch configuration. Then test the join code or Crossplay listing. The official guidance also describes joining with a public IP and port where supported. Because the relay removes the requirement for external port forwarding, a missing forwarding rule is not by itself evidence that a Crossplay server is offline.

Read the symptom as a decision tree
Use the first symptom that matches what you observe. Each branch points to a different layer of the connection.
| What you observe | Most useful next checks |
|---|---|
| The console never shows “Game server connected.” | Inspect the launch script, executable and world paths, startup errors, Internet access, and Windows Firewall permissions on the host. |
| The console says connected, but Steam players cannot find the server. | Check whether -public 1 is set, confirm the public address, verify forwarding for UDP ports 2456–2457, and check the host firewall. |
| Steam players can connect, but Xbox or Game Pass players cannot. | Verify that the server was started with -crossplay. Test with a join code or Crossplay listing. |
| The server appears, but a particular player is refused. | Check the password and the access-control files permittedlist.txt and bannedlist.txt. |
| The server is absent from the browser. | Check whether it was intentionally started with -public 0; if so, use Join IP instead. |
This order prevents a common mistake: changing ports when the actual cause is a hidden server, or changing platform settings when the host never reached readiness.
Check visibility and access controls
Public versus hidden operation
The -public launch setting controls browser visibility. With -public 1, the server is intended to appear in the browser. With -public 0, it is hidden and must be joined through Join IP. A hidden listing is therefore a configuration result, not conclusive evidence of downtime.
Password protection
A server may be online and listed yet reject a player who does not have the correct password. Confirm that the player is using the current password exactly as configured. Do not infer a network failure from a password refusal.
Permitted and banned lists
Valheim also supports access-control files. Review permittedlist.txt when a player should be explicitly allowed, and review bannedlist.txt when one player is refused while others can connect. These files can make an apparently healthy server reject an individual connection, so inspect them before rebuilding the server configuration.
Platform checks: when Xbox can and cannot join
Xbox players cannot run the standalone dedicated-server application. They can, however, join a dedicated server when the server uses Crossplay. If an Xbox or another non-Steam player is testing a Steam-backend server, the failure is expected until the host enables Crossplay with -crossplay.

- Confirm the host console reaches “Game server connected.”
- Confirm
-crossplayis in the server’s startup configuration. - Give the player the join code, or direct them to the Crossplay listing supported by the guide.
- If access is still refused, check the password and permitted/banned lists.
Changing the Steam port-forwarding rule does not make a Steam-only server compatible with Xbox. The backend choice must match the player’s platform.
Firewall and port-forwarding checks for Steam servers
For a Steam-backend server, work from the inside out:
- Application permission: verify that Windows Firewall allows the Valheim server application. If Windows displayed a permission prompt during first launch, the server must be allowed on the networks where it is intended to accept connections.
- Router destination: confirm that forwarding sends the default UDP range 2456–2457 to the computer running the server, not to an old host or a different device.
- Internet-side address: give players the public IP address, not an address that works only inside the host’s home network.
- Visibility setting: use
-public 1if players should find the server in the browser; use Join IP deliberately when it is hidden. - External test: have a player outside the host’s local network test the same path that real players will use.
These checks apply to the Steam backend because its documented operation requires the port range to be reachable from the Internet. They are not a mandatory prerequisite for Crossplay’s relay-based connection.

How to distinguish “running” from “reachable”
There are three useful states:
- Not ready: the console has not reached “Game server connected.” Investigate startup, paths, Internet access, and firewall prompts.
- Ready but undiscoverable: the console is connected, but the server is hidden by
-public 0, or the player is using the wrong listing or address. - Ready but refusing a player: the host is functioning, but the backend, platform, password, permitted list, or banned list blocks that connection.
This distinction explains why “my server is online” and “I cannot join” can both be true. The console confirms host readiness; the player test confirms a complete route and authorization decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Self-hosted versus managed hosting: what changes
The operational difference is who performs the host-side work. A self-hosted dedicated server requires you to keep the host available and handle its launch process, firewall, and (for Steam backend) Internet port forwarding. A managed service may handle some infrastructure tasks, but the official Valheim guides do not establish a universal uptime promise, performance benchmark, backup policy, mod policy, or Crossplay setting for every provider. Confirm those terms with the specific provider before relying on them.
| Operational question | Self-hosted dedicated server | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| How do you confirm readiness? | Read the server console for “Game server connected.” | Provider-specific; the official Valheim guides do not define one universal console or status method. |
| Who configures firewall and ports? | The person operating the host. Steam backend requires Internet-reachable ports 2456–2457; Crossplay uses a relay and does not require external port forwarding. | Provider-specific; verify which firewall and networking tasks are included. |
| Is Crossplay relay enabled? | Only when the server is started with -crossplay. |
Provider-specific; verify that Crossplay is supported and enabled for the selected configuration. |
| How do players join? | Use the method matching the backend: join code, browser, Join IP, or supported public IP and port. | Provider-specific; obtain the exact address, port, listing, or code supplied by the provider. |
| Who controls backups and world files? | The host operator controls the local server files. | Not stated in the official Valheim guides; read the provider’s backup and world-file policy. |
| Must a host PC remain available? | The dedicated-server host must be running for players to connect. | Not stated in the official Valheim guides; confirm the provider’s availability terms. |
Regardless of where the server runs, the backend and access-control checks remain relevant. A managed status page cannot replace confirming that the intended players have the correct platform and join method.

A repeatable online-status checklist
- Open the server console.
- Look for the exact message “Game server connected.”
- Record whether the launch configuration includes
-crossplay. - For Steam backend, verify forwarding and firewall access for UDP 2456–2457.
- Check
-public 1if browser visibility is expected; if-public 0is used, plan to join through Join IP. - Choose one player-side test: join code, browser listing, Join IP, or public IP and port, according to the backend.
- Test from the player’s actual platform. Remember that Xbox requires Crossplay to join a dedicated server.
- If the server appears but one player is refused, inspect the password,
permittedlist.txt, andbannedlist.txt. - Record the exact symptom and return to the corresponding branch instead of changing unrelated settings.
Questions players commonly ask
Does “Game server connected” prove that everyone can join?
No. It proves that the server program is up and ready to accept connections from the host’s perspective. Browser visibility, port reachability, backend selection, platform compatibility, and access controls still determine whether a particular player can connect.
Why is my Valheim server not showing up?
First check -public 1. A server started with -public 0 is intentionally hidden and must be joined through Join IP. If it should be public, then confirm the console readiness message, backend, firewall, and Steam port forwarding where applicable.
Why does Valheim say “failed to connect”?
Use the symptom sequence: no readiness message points to the host; a connected Steam server that cannot be found points to visibility, address, firewall, or ports; a refusal affecting one player points to password or access-control files; a refusal affecting Xbox or other non-Steam players points to missing Crossplay.
Can Xbox join my dedicated Valheim server?
Yes, when the dedicated server is started with Crossplay enabled. Xbox cannot run the standalone dedicated-server program itself, and an Xbox player cannot join a Steam-only dedicated server until the host enables Crossplay.
Frequently Asked Questions
