Check your TV’s exact model and the specific HDMI input you plan to use, then confirm what the PS5 detects at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Verify 4K at 120 Hz, VRR, HDR, and ALLM separately: an “HDMI 2.1” label by itself does not establish support for every feature.

The key is to check the complete signal path, not just the TV’s headline specifications. The model, the selected port, any required TV setting, the connection between console and screen, and the game’s own capabilities can all affect what you see. The steps below help you establish what your current TV can accept before you troubleshoot or consider replacing equipment.

Start with your TV’s exact model and HDMI port

Look for the complete model number on the TV’s rear label or in its settings or system-information screen. Search that exact identifier in the manufacturer’s manual or official specifications. A product-series page may cover multiple models, and their inputs or supported features can differ.

Use the full identifier, including any letters, numbers, or regional suffixes shown on the set. A similar-looking model name or a page for the general product family may not describe your exact TV. If a search result leads to a series-wide marketing page, look for the model-specific support page or manual before treating a feature as confirmed.

Check the documentation for the input you intend to use, not just for the TV as a whole. Some sets support a feature on only particular HDMI ports. The manual may identify those ports by number or describe their capabilities, so note the port before connecting the console. If the TV offers settings needed to enable a feature, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for that model.

When the manual lists the HDMI ports separately, compare each port’s notes with the feature you want. One input might be the documented choice for a high-bandwidth signal while another may have different limits. Do not assume that moving the console to a different input is a neutral change; it can change which TV capabilities are available to the PS5.

For each feature, distinguish three things: whether the television accepts the signal, whether the chosen HDMI port supports it, and whether the game and its selected mode can make use of it. A capable TV cannot make a game output a frame rate or feature the game does not support.

Check the features individually

Feature What to look for in the TV documentation What to confirm on PS5
4K at 120 Hz Support for a 120 Hz input at the resolution you want, on the HDMI input you will use. A generic “120 Hz” claim may not establish that the port accepts 4K at 120 Hz. Open Video Output and review the connected-device information. If the signal is not available as expected, work through the connection checks below.
VRR Explicit support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and which HDMI ports support it. Sony describes PS5 VRR operation with compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR displays. Check the detected-device information and VRR setting under Video Output. Results can vary by TV and game.
HDR HDR support and any port-specific qualifications in the manual or official specifications. Video Output includes HDR information and HDR options for the connected display.
ALLM Explicit support for Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). Sony advises checking the display’s manual; HDMI 2.1 alone does not guarantee ALLM. Use the TV’s documentation and settings to verify the feature. Some TVs may describe or surface low-latency behavior through a Game Mode setting.
8K Compatibility with the display requirements for PS5 8K output, including an 8K/60 Hz display with DSC. Availability is conditional: only select games support 8K, and the Allow 8K Output setting is limited to the CFI-7000 model group.

Use this table as a set of separate checks, not as a package deal. Finding “4K” in the specifications does not answer whether the input accepts 120 Hz at 4K. Finding “HDMI 2.1” does not answer whether ALLM is supported. Likewise, support for one feature does not prove support for VRR, HDR, or any other feature on that same port.

4K, PSSR, and 120 Hz are not the same check

PS5 Pro’s PSSR is console-side upscaling. Sony promotes improved image clarity on a 4K TV; you do not need a TV input mode called “PSSR.” Check the TV’s supported resolution and input signal instead.

In practical terms, separate the image-resolution question from the refresh-rate question. A TV may accept 4K but not a 120 Hz input at that resolution. A TV may also accept 120 Hz at a different resolution. For the specific 4K/120 Hz combination, find documentation that confirms both values together for the input you plan to use, rather than combining a 4K claim and a generic refresh-rate claim.

Sony describes PS5 Pro support for 60 Hz and 120 Hz displays and compatible games with output up to 120 fps. To use a 120 fps mode, the display and the HDMI input must accept 120 Hz, and the game must support that mode. A TV that accepts a 120 Hz signal does not mean every game will run or output at 120 fps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Up to 120 fps” is a ceiling for compatible play, not a promise about every title or every moment in a game. If the display accepts 120 Hz but a particular game does not offer a compatible mode, the TV’s capability alone will not create one. Check the game’s support and the selected mode as a separate part of the diagnosis.

VRR, HDR, and ALLM require separate evidence

VRR adjusts the display refresh rate in sync with console output on a compatible display. Check both the TV’s specifications and the PS5’s detected-device information; a feature appearing in the TV’s general marketing does not confirm it is enabled or available through the port in use.

Sony describes PS5 VRR support with compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR TVs and monitors. The words “compatible” matter: first verify that your display supports VRR, then verify that the relevant port supports it, then check what the console reports. Sony also notes that VRR results vary by TV and game. Support on paper is not a guarantee of identical behavior in every title.

HDR is another independent capability. Check that the TV supports it on the relevant input and then inspect the HDR information shown by the console. Sony’s PS5 feature guidance notes that VRR results vary by TV and game, so support on paper is not a guarantee of identical behavior in every title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDR is not a substitute for 4K/120 Hz or VRR. Treat it as its own signal capability: look for HDR in the model’s official specifications, check any input-specific notes, and use the HDR information and options in Video Output to confirm what the connected display reports. If HDR is listed for the TV but is not reflected as expected on PS5, recheck the port and TV input settings before assuming the specification is wrong.

For ALLM, look for that feature by name in the TV manual. Sony explicitly says not all HDMI 2.1 TVs support ALLM. Some manufacturers may refer to low-latency behavior or expose it through a Game Mode setting, but do not infer ALLM support solely from the HDMI version or from seeing a gaming preset.

Sony’s guidance is direct: “Do all TVs with HDMI 2.1 have ALLM? No, please check the instruction manual that came with the display device to check if it supports ALLM.” In other words, HDMI 2.1 is not a shortcut around checking the manual. If the manual uses different wording, look for its explanation of low-latency behavior and how it is enabled on that model rather than assuming that a general “Game” label proves ALLM compatibility.

Confirm what the PS5 Pro detects

  1. Connect the PS5 Pro to the HDMI port identified in the TV documentation for the features you want.
  2. On the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  3. Review the connected HDMI device’s reported resolution, VRR, and HDR information. Compare it with the TV manual and the port you used.
  4. If a capability is missing, check the TV’s input-specific settings and the PS5 output settings before deciding that the TV cannot support it.
  5. Check the game’s feature support and selected mode when the console and TV appear compatible but the expected result does not occur in a particular game.

The console detects the TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution. Its Video Output screen is useful confirmation, but it does not replace checking ALLM or port-specific details in the TV manual: the PS5 screen reports resolution, VRR, and HDR information, while Sony directs users to the display manual to verify ALLM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the console information as one part of a cross-check. If the TV manual says the specific port supports a feature but the PS5 does not report it, confirm that the console is actually connected to that input and that any required TV setting is in place. If you have several relevant ports, try the one the manual designates. Then revisit Video Output and compare the report again.

Also keep in mind what this screen can and cannot establish. It can show information about the connected device’s resolution, VRR, and HDR, and it can help you see whether the console recognizes the display’s capabilities. It does not eliminate the need to check exact port specifications or the ALLM entry in the manual. Nor does the console’s report guarantee that an individual game uses every available feature.

Which HDMI port should you use?

Use the port the TV manual identifies for the signal you need, especially if you want 4K at 120 Hz or VRR. Sony recommends an HDMI 2.1-compatible port for relevant high-bandwidth features and notes that the manual may identify the appropriate input. Do not assume every port on a television has the same capabilities.

If your goal is a particular combination, check the port for the combination rather than for one item in isolation. For example, to check for 4K at 120 Hz with VRR, confirm that the documentation ties those capabilities to the selected input. Then connect the console there and look at the relevant information on PS5. A port documented for 4K/120 Hz is not automatically evidence of ALLM, and a port that supports HDR does not by itself establish VRR.

If you are comparing two TVs or two inputs, make the decision feature by feature rather than choosing by a single label:

  • Does the input accept 4K at 120 Hz, if that is important to you?
  • Does that same input support VRR and HDR?
  • Does the TV document ALLM or another supported low-latency behavior?
  • Will a TV setting, firmware version, or device between the console and TV affect the signal?

To compare two TVs, make a small checklist with one row for each desired feature and one column for each set. Record the exact model, the port that supports the feature, any setup requirement stated in the manual, and what the PS5 reports when connected. This makes it easier to spot a meaningful difference: one TV may have the desired refresh rate on the correct input, while another may have a different feature mix. The strongest choice is the set whose documented port capabilities match the features you actually want to use, not necessarily the one with the most prominent general HDMI label.

Use the same approach when deciding between ports on one TV. If one input is identified for the signal you want, that matters more than the fact that both inputs are labeled HDMI. Write down the port number and keep the console connected there while checking settings. Otherwise, it is easy to compare a manual’s capability for one input against what the console detects through another.

A receiver or other device in the HDMI path can complicate diagnosis. For a direct check, connect the console to the TV input you intend to use and confirm the detected capabilities there before adding other devices back into the connection. If the capability is present in the direct connection but missing when the other device is restored, focus your investigation on that intermediate connection path rather than changing the TV’s model-level assumptions.

What to check if 4K at 120 Hz is missing

If the PS5 does not report or deliver the expected 4K/120 Hz signal, verify the chain from console to screen before concluding that the TV is incompatible. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance points to the display’s 4K/120 Hz support, TV firmware, cable, port, connection path, and console output settings.

  1. Recheck the TV specification. Confirm that the exact model supports 4K at 120 Hz as an input signal, rather than relying on a series name or a general refresh-rate claim. Make sure the documentation applies to the port you are using.
  2. Update the TV firmware. Install available firmware for the set, then check the manual again for any input settings required to enable the relevant signal. A firmware update is a troubleshooting step, not proof that a TV that lacks the documented capability can be upgraded to support it.
  3. Use the appropriate HDMI input. Move the console to the port the TV documentation identifies for 4K/120 Hz or other high-bandwidth features. Confirm the port number against the manual rather than assuming the inputs are interchangeable.
  4. Check the cable. Sony recommends the HDMI cable included with the PS5. If it is unavailable, damaged, or suspect, use a rated Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. A cable cannot add support to a TV or port that lacks it, so treat a replacement cable as a way to check a questionable connection, not as a feature upgrade.
  5. Remove intermediate equipment while diagnosing. Connect the PS5 directly to the TV. If the signal works directly but not through a receiver or another device, investigate that device and its connections separately.
  6. Review PS5 output settings. Return to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and inspect the available resolution and video transfer-rate settings. Compare the reported capabilities with the TV’s manual.

Work through those checks in order so you can isolate the point of failure. First establish that the TV model and selected input are documented for 4K/120 Hz. Then remove avoidable uncertainties: update the TV, use the designated input, and connect directly with the included PS5 cable if it is available and in good condition. Finally, inspect the console’s available output information and settings. Changing several parts of the chain at once makes it harder to tell which issue mattered.

If your manual confirms 4K/120 Hz but the PS5 still does not report or provide the expected signal, note the model number, port number, connection path, and firmware status when consulting the TV manufacturer’s model-specific instructions. Those details help distinguish a port or setup issue from a broader expectation based on a series page.

If the TV’s specifications do not list the target signal on the port in use, changing cables or console settings will not add that capability. If the documentation says it is supported but the console still does not detect it after these checks, consult the TV manufacturer’s model-specific instructions.

Check 8K only if you need it

8K is not a baseline requirement for using PS5 Pro. Sony says only select games support 8K, and its PS5 video-output guidance specifies an 8K/60 Hz display with DSC. It also limits the Allow 8K Output setting to the CFI-7000 model group. Confirm the game, display, and console prerequisites together; an 8K label on a television alone does not establish that the setup can output 8K from the console.

This makes 8K a separate, conditional check rather than the first test to run. If your immediate goal is to use 4K, HDR, VRR, or a compatible 120 Hz mode, start with those documented capabilities on the input you use. Check 8K only when you have a supported game and are verifying the particular display and console requirements for that output.

How to interpret the result

Your TV is ready for a particular PS5 Pro feature when the exact model documentation confirms the needed signal on the chosen input and the console’s Video Output screen reports the relevant connected-device capability where it provides that information. For ALLM, use the TV manual and its settings rather than HDMI 2.1 branding as proof. Finally, check the game and its mode: the console and TV can support a feature that a given title does not use.

A useful final record can be brief: write down the TV model, the HDMI port used, which of 4K/120 Hz, VRR, HDR, and ALLM are documented for that port, and what the PS5 reports for resolution, VRR, and HDR. If one item is uncertain, you know exactly what to verify next. If your needs are modest, you do not have to treat every missing feature as a problem; focus on the features you want and the games or modes that use them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most important, do not make a purchase decision from a single label or an unexplained missing setting. Verify model-specific port support, connect directly while troubleshooting, check firmware and output settings, and account for game support. An additional Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is relevant only if the included cable is missing, damaged, or part of a suspect connection; it cannot supply capabilities that the television itself does not support.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check whether my TV supports the features PS5 Pro uses?

Find the TV’s complete model number, check its official manual or specifications for each feature on the HDMI port you plan to use, connect the PS5 Pro to that input, and review Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. That PS5 page reports connected-device information for resolution, VRR, and HDR. Check the TV manual separately for ALLM and any port-specific requirements.

Does my TV support 4K 120Hz?

Look up the exact TV model and confirm that its documentation says the intended HDMI input accepts 4K at 120 Hz. A 4K specification alone or a general 120 Hz claim is not enough to confirm that combination. Connect directly to the designated port and check PS5 Video Output; if the signal is missing, verify firmware, cable, input, connection path, and console output settings.

How do I know if my TV supports VRR?

Check the TV’s official specifications or manual for explicit VRR support and confirm which HDMI ports provide it. Then connect the PS5 to that input and review the detected-device information and VRR setting in Video Output. Sony notes that VRR results vary by TV and game, so support does not guarantee identical behavior in every title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which HDMI port should I use for PS5 Pro?

Use the input the exact TV model’s manual identifies for the features you want, especially 4K/120 Hz or VRR. Sony recommends an HDMI 2.1-compatible port for relevant high-bandwidth features, but the port documentation matters because inputs can differ. Confirm the selected port by checking what PS5 detects.

Does HDMI 2.1 mean my TV supports ALLM?

No. Sony says not all HDMI 2.1 TVs support ALLM. Check the TV’s instruction manual for ALLM or its documented low-latency behavior; do not infer support from the HDMI version or a general gaming preset alone.

Do I need an 8K TV to use PS5 Pro?

No. 8K is not a baseline PS5 Pro requirement, and Sony says only select games support 8K. PS5 8K output has additional prerequisites, including an 8K/60 Hz display with DSC, and the Allow 8K Output setting is limited to the CFI-7000 model group.

Should I buy a new HDMI cable if 4K/120 Hz is missing?

Not as the first step. Sony recommends the cable included with PS5. Check the TV’s model-specific support, designated input, firmware, direct connection, and PS5 output settings first. If the included cable is missing, damaged, or suspect, a rated Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is an option for troubleshooting, but a cable cannot add a feature the TV or port lacks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Verify the exact TV model and the specific HDMI input for each feature you care about, then check what PS5 reports in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Treat 4K/120 Hz, VRR, HDR, and ALLM as separate checks; HDMI 2.1 alone does not guarantee them all, and the game must support the feature too.
