The reliable way to answer “How do I know if my TV supports Apple TV 4K?” is to check the TV’s exact model in its manual or official specifications, then verify the specific HDMI input, format, refresh rate, cable and intermediate equipment you will use. A television can connect to Apple TV 4K over HDMI while still lacking 4K, HDR10+, Dolby Vision or the required refresh rate.
Record your TV model, Apple TV 4K generation and complete signal route. Confirm support for 3840 × 2160 (4K), the precise HDR format you want, and 60 Hz (50 Hz in Europe) for automatic HDR selection. Then enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode, test the cable with Apple TV’s built-in diagnostic and check your broadband separately from display compatibility.
What must a TV support for Apple TV 4K features?
Apple TV 4K works with an HD or 4K television that has an HDMI input. The television determines which picture capabilities are actually available. Apple defines 4K as 3840 × 2160 pixels and HD as 1920 × 1080 pixels; an HD set can display the Apple TV signal, but it cannot display 4K detail simply because the streaming box supports it.
HDR is a separate capability from resolution. HDR can provide a broader range of colors and luminance, but “HDR” is not one universal format. Check the exact format and the refresh rate rather than accepting a product page that only says “HDR.”

| Capability to verify | What the TV must support | Where to confirm it |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 3840 × 2160 for 4K output. An HD-only display remains limited to 1920 × 1080. | The model’s technical specifications or manual. |
| HDR format | The specific format you intend to use: HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision. | The TV specification sheet and the HDMI-input table in the manual. |
| Refresh rate | Apple says automatic HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision selection requires support at 60 Hz, or 50 Hz in Europe. | The format-and-refresh-rate section of the manual, not just the panel’s maximum refresh-rate headline. |
| Lower-rate HDR | Apple TV 4K can output those formats at 30 Hz, or 25 Hz in Europe, when Match Dynamic Range is enabled. | Apple’s format guidance and the Apple TV Video and Audio settings. |
| HDMI input | The particular port must accept 4K and the desired HDR format. | The port diagram and notes for each HDMI input in the TV manual. |
| TV input mode | Some sets require an HDR, enhanced, deep-color or similarly named mode to be turned on. | The TV’s input or external-device settings. |
Apple’s guide puts the requirement plainly: “To take full advantage of Apple TV 4K’s audio and visual capabilities, you need a TV that supports 4K, HDR, or Dolby Vision, and a sound system that’s Dolby Atmos–compatible.” That is Apple’s setup guidance, not an independent test of every television model.
Use Apple’s 4K, HDR, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision compatibility guide alongside the TV manufacturer’s documentation. The final answer is model-, region- and equipment-specific.
Which Apple TV 4K generation do you have?
Do not infer capability from the words “Apple TV 4K” alone. Apple’s current technical information identifies HDR10+ support for the third-generation Apple TV 4K; it should not be presented as a feature of every generation.
Recommended Free Tools
| Apple TV hardware | Relevant documented capability | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) | Apple lists HDR10+ support. Its technical specifications list Dolby Vision up to 2160p at 60 fps and HDR output up to 4K at 60 fps. | Verify that the TV and the chosen HDMI input support the same format and rate. |
| Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) | Supports the ARC/eARC audio-return feature for compatible HomePod or HomePod mini setups when the TV provides ARC/eARC. | Check the TV’s ARC/eARC port and audio settings separately from picture support. |
| Other Apple TV 4K generations | The cited Apple pages do not establish HDR10+ support for every other generation. | Identify the exact model and consult its generation-specific Apple specifications before promising a format. |
The generation is usually shown in Apple TV settings or can be matched to the model information on the device. Keep that record with the TV’s full model number; a product-family name is not precise enough for a yes-or-no answer.
How do I know if my TV supports Apple TV 4K? Follow this compatibility check
1. Record every model in the signal path
Write down the TV’s complete model number, including regional suffixes, the Apple TV 4K generation and the HDMI route. If Apple TV connects through an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch or splitter, record those model numbers too. A receiver or switch can have different limits from the television, and two HDMI inputs on the same TV may not support the same formats.
2. Look up 4K and the exact HDR format
Open the TV manual or official specifications for the exact model. Confirm 3840 × 2160 support and then search the document for each format you care about: HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Check the stated rate beside the format. For automatic HDR format selection, Apple specifies 60 Hz (50 Hz in Europe); Apple also documents 30 Hz (25 Hz in Europe) output when Match Dynamic Range is enabled.
Do not turn a generic “HDR compatible” label into a Dolby Vision or HDR10+ promise. A set may support HDR10 while omitting another format, or support a format only on selected inputs.

3. Find the correct HDMI input and enable its high-bandwidth mode
Use the TV manual’s HDMI table to identify which input accepts 4K and HDR. Connect Apple TV to that port rather than choosing by position or by the presence of an HDMI 2.1 label; HDMI 2.1 is not a universal requirement for Apple TV 4K viewing.
Manufacturers use different names for the required input mode. Look for settings containing terms such as Enhanced, Ultra, Deep Color, Deep or HDR, then apply the mode to the HDMI input used by Apple TV. The manual is authoritative because the label and menu location vary by model.
4. Check the cable and every intermediate device
Apple requires an HDMI cable. Apple’s setup guide says that a 4K TV supporting HDR needs a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Apple also recommends looking for a “Compatible Dolby Vision” mark, which it says identifies cables tested with Apple TV 4K and a range of televisions; Apple gives a Belkin Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable as an example. Inspect the cable you already own before buying another, and remember that a new cable cannot add a format the TV does not support.
The receiver, soundbar, switch and splitter must pass the same resolution, HDR format and rate. An apparently compatible TV can fail when one intermediate device accepts only a narrower signal. Temporarily remove those devices and connect Apple TV directly to the correct TV input. If the direct connection works, inspect the intermediate unit’s supported formats, firmware and enhanced-HDMI setting before restoring the chain.

On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Check HDMI Connection. Apple describes this as a two-minute cable-connection test. Follow its result, then repeat the test after changing the cable, TV input or intermediate device. This test checks the connection; it does not change a TV’s native HDR or Dolby Vision capability.
6. Verify the source and network independently
A compatible display does not guarantee that every film or episode is delivered in 4K or HDR. The Apple TV app identifies available 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos versions in its title information; Apple explains those labels in its guide to finding films with 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos.
Internet performance is a separate variable. Apple recommends at least 25 Mbps for 4K streaming and says Apple devices may automatically switch to lower quality when the connection is insufficient. A TV can therefore pass every hardware check while a particular stream appears in lower resolution.

Which HDMI port supports 4K HDR?
The answer is the port identified by your TV’s manual, not necessarily the first HDMI socket or the one with the highest-numbered label. Some televisions reserve 4K/HDR support for one or two inputs. Others support 4K on every input but require an enhanced mode to be enabled individually.
The Tool Desk

- Open the manual’s HDMI or external-input specification table and locate the inputs marked for 4K, HDR, HDR10+, Dolby Vision or the applicable refresh rate.
- Connect Apple TV to that input and turn on the model’s enhanced, ultra, deep-color or equivalent option.
- Reselect the input and run Settings > Video and Audio > Check HDMI Connection on Apple TV.
If the manual lists different limits for different ports, use the port with the required combination rather than relying on a general television specification. A port can be 4K-capable yet lack the HDR format or rate you want.
Does my TV support Dolby Vision?
Search the exact model’s official specification for the words Dolby Vision, then verify the HDMI input and refresh rate listed beside it. “HDR,” “HDR10” and “Dolby Vision” are not interchangeable labels. Also check whether the specification applies to external HDMI sources or only to the TV’s built-in apps.
For automatic Dolby Vision selection, Apple’s requirement is support at 60 Hz (50 Hz in Europe). If the TV and connection can use the format only at 30 Hz (25 Hz in Europe), Apple documents using Match Dynamic Range. The TV’s manual must still confirm that Dolby Vision is accepted on the selected input.
When comparing a Dolby Vision claim, check three separate questions:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Does this Apple TV generation output Dolby Vision at the rate documented for it?
- Does this exact TV model accept Dolby Vision from an HDMI source?
- Does the HDMI port and the entire cable path pass it?
A “yes” to the first question cannot override a “no” to either of the other two.

The TV is HD-only
Apple TV 4K can connect to an HD television, but that set cannot display 4K or HDR detail that its panel and inputs do not support. Confirm the TV resolution before changing cables or Apple TV settings.
The wrong HDMI input is in use
Move Apple TV to the input that the manual identifies for 4K/HDR, then enable that input’s enhanced or deep-color mode. Recheck the connection after the change.
The desired format is missing but another HDR format works
Recheck the exact format in the TV specification. HDR10 support does not establish HDR10+ or Dolby Vision support, and Apple identifies HDR10+ as a third-generation Apple TV 4K feature. Confirm that the Apple TV generation, TV model and source title all support the same format.
HDR works only at a lower rate
Confirm the TV’s stated rate for the format. Apple specifies automatic selection at 60 Hz (50 Hz in Europe), while 30 Hz (25 Hz in Europe) output requires Match Dynamic Range. Use the rate the TV manual documents rather than assuming that a panel’s maximum refresh rate applies to every HDR mode.
The picture drops out, flashes or reports an unsupported signal
Run the two-minute HDMI test. Reseat or replace the cable with a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, then bypass the receiver, soundbar, switch or splitter by connecting Apple TV directly to the TV. If the direct route succeeds, check the intermediate device’s format support, firmware and enhanced-HDMI setting.
HDR appears in one app but not another
Check the title’s listing. Apple’s catalog labels distinguish 4K, HDR and Dolby Vision availability, so an individual source may not provide the format even when the hardware does. Network conditions can also trigger lower-quality playback; Apple recommends at least 25 Mbps for 4K streaming.

Colors or brightness look wrong after HDR appears
Verify that the TV’s HDR or enhanced input mode is applied to the same HDMI socket used by Apple TV. Check the model-specific manual before changing picture presets. If the issue began after routing through another device, test a direct Apple TV-to-TV connection to isolate the path.

How should you compare two TVs for Apple TV 4K?
Use a feature-by-feature comparison instead of a single “4K compatible” badge. Fill in the values from each model’s manual, including regional variants.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Resolution | Is the panel 3840 × 2160, and does the chosen HDMI input accept 4K? |
| HDR10 | Is HDR10 accepted from HDMI, and at what refresh rates? |
| HDR10+ | Does the TV accept HDR10+ on the relevant input, and is the Apple TV a third-generation model? |
| Dolby Vision | Does the exact model accept Dolby Vision from an external HDMI source, and at which rates? |
| HDMI inputs | Which numbered ports support each format? Does each require an enhanced, ultra or deep-color setting? |
| Audio return | Is there an ARC/eARC-labeled port if you need TV audio sent to a supported HomePod setup? |
| Signal path | Can the receiver or soundbar, switch, splitter and cable pass the same format and rate? |
| Streaming connection | Can your broadband reliably meet Apple’s 25 Mbps recommendation for 4K streaming? |
This method exposes trade-offs that a headline specification hides. One model may support Dolby Vision but not HDR10+, another may provide HDR only on selected inputs, and either can be limited by an older receiver or cable.
What is ARC/eARC, and does it prove 4K HDR compatibility?
ARC and eARC concern audio returning from the television to an audio device; they do not establish 4K or HDR picture support. Apple documents ARC/eARC use with Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) for supported HomePod or HomePod mini output when the television provides the required connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLook for an HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC and enable ARC/eARC or HDMI-CEC if the TV requires it. Keep this check separate from the HDMI input carrying Apple TV’s picture. A TV can have eARC for audio while a different input has the relevant 4K/HDR limits.
Apple’s instructions are in Use HDMI ARC or eARC with your Apple TV 4K. The feature depends on the Apple TV generation, TV support and the audio setup; it is not a substitute for checking the display signal.
