Open CrystalDiskInfo, select the SSD, and read its Transfer Mode. Record the current PCIe generation and lane width, then compare them with the drive’s supported mode and the exact M.2 socket specification in your motherboard or computer manual. A lower generation or a narrower width is evidence of the link currently negotiated; it does not, by itself, prove that the SSD is faulty.
What PCIe lane speed means for an SSD
An M.2 NVMe SSD communicates over a PCI Express link. Two independent properties describe that link: the PCIe generation and the number of lanes. The generation is the signaling-speed tier for each lane. The width is written as x1, x2, or x4 and tells you how many lanes are active. Therefore, PCIe 3.0 x2 and PCIe 3.0 x4 use the same generation but different lane counts, while PCIe 3.0 x4 and PCIe 4.0 x4 use the same width but different generations.
When people ask whether an SSD is running at x4, they are asking about lane width, not the generation. When a PCIe 4.0 SSD appears as PCIe 3.0, they are asking about the generation. Read both values separately because either one can be the limiting factor.

- Current negotiated mode: what the SSD and platform are using right now.
- SSD supported mode: the highest link mode the drive reports that it can support.
- Socket capability: the generation and lane width that the specific M.2 connector can provide in the installed system, including any lane-sharing rules.
The SSD’s advertised maximum is not the same thing as its current connection. A drive can support a faster mode than the socket, CPU platform, or current configuration makes available. Conversely, a socket may support a mode that the installed drive does not use. The negotiated value is the starting point for diagnosis, while the board manual explains why that value is available.

What you need before checking
- The computer with the SSD installed and powered on.
- CrystalDiskInfo, or another utility that exposes PCIe link information.
- The exact computer or motherboard model, including its revision where the manufacturer distinguishes revisions.
- The official manual or specification page for that model.
No hardware purchase is required for this initial check. You do not need to remove the SSD or run a benchmark simply to read the negotiated link. If the computer contains several drives, note which physical M.2 socket contains the drive you are inspecting; the socket position matters.
Step-by-step: read the negotiated mode in CrystalDiskInfo
1. Select the correct SSD
- Open CrystalDiskInfo.
- Use the drive selector at the top of the window to choose the SSD you want to diagnose.
- Confirm the model shown in the window matches the physical drive or the operating-system disk you intend to check. Selecting another drive gives you a valid reading for the wrong device.
2. Find Transfer Mode
Locate the Transfer Mode field. CrystalDiskInfo documents this field as a current mode followed by a supported mode. The entries can include a PCIe generation and lane width, such as a current PCIe 3.0 x2 value followed by a supported PCIe 3.0 x4 value. Treat the first value as the connection in use and the second as the drive’s reported capability.
3. Write down both components
Record the generation and width from each side separately. For example, write current: PCIe 3.0, x2; supported: PCIe 3.0, x4 rather than simply noting that the drive is PCIe 3.0. This prevents a lane-width reduction from being mistaken for a generation mismatch.

A screenshot or written note is useful if you later change sockets, disable an expansion card, or alter a firmware setting. The negotiated mode can change when the installed hardware configuration changes, so preserve the original reading before troubleshooting.
How to verify the M.2 socket’s real capability
Identify the exact connector
Use the motherboard diagram, chassis markings, or the system manufacturer’s service manual to determine whether the SSD is in the first, second, or another M.2 socket. Do not assume that connectors with the same physical keying have identical electrical connections. A board can provide different PCIe generations or lane widths at different sockets.
Read the official manual, not only a retailer listing
Find the table or section describing storage connectors. Check the named socket for its maximum PCIe generation and lane width. Also look for notes stating that a socket is disabled or reduced when another M.2 connector, PCIe slot, SATA port, or onboard device is populated. ASUS documentation, for example, describes configurations in which using particular M.2 sockets changes the operating width of another PCIe slot. The exact rule is model-specific; apply only the note written for your board.

Check the CPU and platform
On some systems, the processor and chipset provide different groups of PCIe lanes. The motherboard may expose a connector physically capable of a certain mode while the installed CPU or platform generation supplies fewer lanes or a lower generation. The platform specification and the motherboard manual must therefore be read together. A socket label alone is not enough to establish what the installed system can negotiate.

How to interpret common readings
| Current mode | Supported mode | What it tells you | Next check |
|---|---|---|---|
| PCIe 4.0 x4 | PCIe 4.0 x4 | Generation and width match the drive’s reported capability. | Use the board manual only if performance is unexpectedly low; the link reading itself does not guarantee a benchmark result. |
| PCIe 3.0 x4 | PCIe 4.0 x4 | The drive is using four lanes, but at a lower generation than it supports. | Verify the socket’s generation, CPU/platform support, and any reason the link could have negotiated down. |
| PCIe 3.0 x2 | PCIe 3.0 x4 | The generation matches, but only two of the four supported lanes are active. | Check whether the socket is wired for x2 or whether lane sharing has reduced width. |
| PCIe 4.0 x2 | PCIe 4.0 x4 | The generation is available, but the negotiated width is narrower. | Inspect the connector’s lane wiring and the manual’s sharing notes. |
| Current and supported values are identical | Same generation and width | The utility reports no link-mode reduction relative to the drive’s supported mode. | Investigate workload, thermals, firmware, or benchmarking conditions rather than assuming a lane limitation. |
The examples describe link interpretation, not promised throughput. A benchmark measures a workload and can be affected by factors beyond the PCIe link, including the test pattern and the SSD’s own behavior. Use Transfer Mode to establish the connection, then use performance testing only to investigate a specific symptom.
Read the mode string as two separate comparisons
A mode string is easiest to diagnose when you split it into a generation comparison and a width comparison. For example, current PCIe 3.0 x4 versus supported PCIe 4.0 x4 means width is unchanged at four lanes, but generation is lower. Current PCIe 4.0 x2 versus supported PCIe 4.0 x4 means generation is correct and width is the only discrepancy. Current PCIe 3.0 x2 versus supported PCIe 4.0 x4 is lower in both dimensions.
There is also an important case in which the drive itself reports a lower supported mode. If both current and supported values are PCIe 3.0 x4, the utility is not showing a reduction relative to that drive’s reported capability, even if you expected the model to be a PCIe 4.0 device. Confirm the selected model and consult the SSD manufacturer’s specifications before drawing a conclusion. Do not silently substitute a product-family specification for the exact installed model.
Use a comparison worksheet
Writing the five relevant facts in one place prevents assumptions. Record the current generation, current width, supported generation, supported width, and the exact socket’s documented generation and width. Then add any manual note about another occupied M.2 socket, PCIe slot, SATA port, or onboard device. This makes it clear whether a lower value is explained by the socket design, the installed platform, or a configuration interaction.
For instance, a current PCIe 3.0 x2 reading, a supported PCIe 4.0 x4 drive, and a socket documented as PCIe 3.0 x2 is consistent with the connector’s design. The same reading on a socket documented as PCIe 4.0 x4 requires more checking: review CPU and platform support, lane-sharing notes, firmware options, and the physical installation. The display identifies the link condition, while the documentation supplies the explanation.

If the current generation is lower than expected
The SSD is in a lower-generation socket
A PCIe 4.0-capable drive can legitimately operate as PCIe 3.0 when installed in a socket whose documented maximum is PCIe 3.0. Move the drive only after confirming that the destination connector supports the desired generation and that relocating it will not create a lane-sharing conflict.
The CPU or platform limits the generation
Some systems expose connectors with different capabilities depending on the processor or platform generation. Compare the installed CPU and chipset documentation with the motherboard’s storage table. If the socket is documented for a lower generation with your exact platform, the reading is an expected platform limit rather than evidence of a defective SSD.
The link negotiated down
If the manual says the socket and platform support the higher generation, a lower current value indicates that the connection negotiated down. Power off and reseat the drive according to the manufacturer’s service instructions, then recheck the field. Inspect firmware settings for PCIe or M.2 speed options if the system exposes them, and update firmware only by following the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s documented procedure. A changed reading after reseating or a firmware change is useful evidence, but it still does not identify a single failed component by itself.
If the current width is x2 instead of x4
Confirm the connector’s wiring
Some M.2 sockets are electrically wired for fewer lanes than the SSD supports. If the manual specifies x2 for that connector, an x2 reading is the socket’s design limit. A physically compatible drive cannot create additional lanes that are not wired to the connector.
Look for lane sharing
Read every footnote attached to the M.2 and PCIe slot tables. Populating another socket or expansion slot can reallocate lanes, disable a connector, or reduce a link’s width. Recheck the mode with the complete installed configuration, because removing or relocating another device may change the result.
Separate width from generation
A reading such as PCIe 3.0 x2 has two independent facts: the generation is PCIe 3.0 and the width is x2. Changing a firmware setting that affects generation will not necessarily restore missing lanes, and moving to an x4-wired socket will not automatically raise a PCIe 3.0 connection to PCIe 4.0. Troubleshoot the dimension that is actually lower.

Common diagnostic mistakes
- Checking only the SSD label: the model’s advertised interface is not proof of the negotiated link in this computer.
- Checking only the generation: PCIe 3.0 x4 and PCIe 3.0 x2 have different widths, so a generation-only note misses a possible lane limit.
- Assuming every M.2 socket is equivalent: sockets can have different wiring, generations, and sharing rules.
- Reading the second Transfer Mode value as current: CrystalDiskInfo presents current mode followed by supported mode; the order matters.
- Using a benchmark as the link-status tool: a benchmark reports workload performance, not a direct negotiated-generation and negotiated-width status.
- Changing several things at once: moving the drive, removing an expansion card, and changing firmware simultaneously makes the result harder to interpret. Change one documented variable, then read Transfer Mode again.
- Declaring the SSD defective immediately: a lower negotiated mode can be caused by the socket, CPU/platform, or lane-sharing configuration.
When CrystalDiskInfo does not show a clear value
Field names and available information vary among utilities and systems. If Transfer Mode is absent, blank, or difficult to parse, check the SSD manufacturer’s management utility and the system firmware or UEFI information if those interfaces expose link status. Then consult the exact platform documentation. Do not infer x4 operation from the SSD model name or from a benchmark alone.
Make sure the selected device is the SSD rather than another storage device, and check whether the utility is reporting a supported mode without a separate current value. If you cannot distinguish the two, treat the display as inconclusive and use a tool or firmware page that explicitly reports negotiated link speed and width.
Why a matching link does not guarantee advertised speed
Even when current and supported modes match, sequential throughput may not equal a vendor’s advertised maximum. The advertised figure is a drive performance claim under specified test conditions; the negotiated PCIe mode describes the transport link. A benchmark can also be influenced by queue depth, transfer size, drive capacity, free space, thermal state, background activity, and the particular test workload. Those factors do not change the meaning of the Transfer Mode field.
Use this order of evidence:
- Confirm the current generation and width.
- Confirm the SSD’s supported mode.
- Confirm the exact socket’s documented capability.
- Check lane-sharing and CPU/platform conditions.
- Only then investigate benchmark results or possible hardware faults.
Cost and what you actually need
The initial diagnosis costs nothing beyond access to the computer and its documentation. CrystalDiskInfo or an equivalent status utility provides the first reading, and the motherboard or system manual explains the connector. An SSD, adapter, replacement slot, or repair service is not needed merely to determine whether the current link is x2 or x4, or whether it is using one PCIe generation or another. Consider hardware changes only after the documented limitation and the desired upgrade are clearly established.

- Record the drive: select the intended SSD in CrystalDiskInfo and note its Transfer Mode.
- Split the mode: write generation and width separately for both current and supported values.
- Locate the socket: identify the physical M.2 connector containing the drive.
- Read the manual: find that connector’s generation, lane width, and all lane-sharing footnotes.
- Check the platform: verify that the installed CPU and chipset support the socket mode you expect.
- Classify the difference: decide whether the discrepancy is generation, width, or both.
- Change one variable: if the documentation permits it, reseat the drive, try the documented alternative socket, or adjust a documented firmware option, then read Transfer Mode again.
- Escalate only with evidence: if the negotiated mode remains below the documented capability after configuration checks, compare results with the SSD vendor’s utility and the platform manufacturer’s support guidance.
Quick checklist
- Did you select the correct SSD?
- Did you record the current mode rather than only the supported mode?
- Did you read generation and lane width as separate values?
- Did you identify the exact M.2 socket?
- Did you check the motherboard or computer manual for that socket’s wiring?
- Did you read lane-sharing notes for the complete installed configuration?
- Did you verify CPU and platform capability?
- Did you avoid treating a lower negotiated mode as proof of SSD failure?
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if my NVMe SSD is running at x4?
Open CrystalDiskInfo, select the correct drive, and read Transfer Mode. The current value includes the lane width, such as x4. Compare it with the supported value and verify that the physical M.2 socket is documented for x4 in the installed configuration.
Why is my PCIe 4.0 SSD showing PCIe 3.0?
The socket or CPU/platform may support only PCIe 3.0, or the link may have negotiated down. Check the exact socket’s manual entry, platform specifications, lane-sharing notes, and any documented firmware setting before treating it as a fault.

Is an M.2 SSD limited by the motherboard slot?
It can be. The connector may have a lower PCIe generation, fewer wired lanes, or sharing rules that reduce availability when another device is installed. Compare the current Transfer Mode with the exact socket documentation.
What does PCIe 3.0 x2 mean?
It means the current link uses PCIe generation 3.0 and two lanes. It is separate from whether the SSD supports x4 or a newer generation.
Does PCIe 3.0 x4 mean the SSD is defective?
No. It may be the expected limit of the socket or platform, or a negotiated-down connection. Confirm the motherboard, CPU, and configuration first.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need a benchmark to check PCIe lane speed?
No. Use Transfer Mode or another link-status display to read negotiated generation and width. A benchmark can help investigate performance afterward but does not replace the link-status check.
What if CrystalDiskInfo does not show Transfer Mode?
Try the SSD manufacturer’s utility or system firmware/UEFI information, then consult the exact platform documentation. Treat a display that does not distinguish current and supported values as inconclusive.
Do I need to buy hardware for this diagnosis?
No. The initial check uses diagnostic software and the official motherboard or computer manual. Hardware changes are only a later option if documentation confirms a limitation and an upgrade is justified.
The Bottom Line
Read the SSD’s current Transfer Mode, separate PCIe generation from lane width, and compare both with the drive’s supported mode and the exact M.2 socket’s documented capability. Check CPU/platform support and lane-sharing notes before changing hardware. A lower negotiated value identifies a link condition, not automatic proof of SSD failure.
