A Sprint-branded phone may not show 5G because Sprint’s old networks have been retired, and the handset may not support the bands and network technologies T-Mobile uses now. Even a compatible 5G phone needs 5G coverage where you are. Check the exact phone’s IMEI and your location on T-Mobile’s coverage map before deciding whether you need another device.
What happened to Sprint’s network?
T-Mobile lists Sprint’s 3G CDMA network as discontinued on March 31, 2022, and Sprint LTE as discontinued on June 30, 2022. T-Mobile’s 3G UMTS network was discontinued on July 1, 2022. These milestones mean a phone cannot rely on its old Sprint connection path; they do not, by themselves, establish whether a particular phone still works. A compatible, active device may connect to T-Mobile LTE or 5G where coverage is available. T-Mobile’s network-evolution page lists the retirement dates.
T-Mobile’s October 22, 2021 CDMA transition announcement reported that 308 million people were covered by Extended Range 5G and 186 million by Ultra Capacity 5G at that time. Those are historical company figures, not current coverage totals. Read the dated announcement.

The exact phone may not support T-Mobile’s 5G bands
T-Mobile states: “To connect to the local network, your device must support both our network frequency (band) and the technology (5G, 4G LTE, 2G).” Its listed 5G bands include n71 for Extended Range 5G and n2/n25, n41, n258, n260, and n261 for Ultra Capacity 5G. A device may support some network layers but not others.

A “Sprint 5G” label—or even a familiar retail model name—is not enough to confirm compatibility. Hardware can vary by model number or region. T-Mobile recommends checking the phone’s IMEI rather than relying only on a general band comparison. See T-Mobile’s network and frequency information and its BYOD compatibility checker and guide.
5G may not be available at your location
A capable handset cannot connect to a network layer that is not available where it is being used. T-Mobile says 5G requires a compatible device and is not available in every area. Check the address or nearby landmark in its coverage map. The carrier’s support page also says its LTE network connects 99% of Americans; that figure is not a 5G coverage statistic, and the page does not state a year for it.

The phone may be showing LTE for a normal network reason
T-Mobile says its nationwide 5G is mostly Non-Standalone: it relies on LTE. Standalone 5G operates independently of LTE and is available only in select areas, according to the carrier’s support page. Because coverage and rollout can change, check current carrier guidance for your location rather than assuming Standalone 5G is available at a particular address. T-Mobile explains Standalone and Non-Standalone 5G.
When do the SIM and software matter?
A SIM or software update can matter for Standalone 5G, but neither can add missing 5G radio hardware or create coverage where none exists. T-Mobile lists four requirements for Standalone 5G:

- A compatible 5G device.
- A compatible SIM.
- Manufacturer software that supports Standalone 5G.
- Standalone 5G coverage in your location.
If a device has not received the required software update, T-Mobile says it can still use LTE and Non-Standalone 5G where available. Check the carrier’s SIM and 5G guidance if the issue is specifically access to Standalone service.
Do older lists of Sprint 5G phones confirm compatibility today?
No. In a 2020 announcement, T-Mobile said Sprint customers with the OnePlus 8 5G, LG V60 ThinQ 5G, Samsung Galaxy S20 5G smartphones, and Samsung A71 5G could access its nationwide 5G. That list is historical context, not a guarantee for every variant, present account, software state, or current network eligibility. Check the exact device’s IMEI for its current status. What should you check, and in what order?
- Check local coverage. Enter your address or a nearby landmark in T-Mobile’s coverage map. If 5G is not shown for the location, the handset cannot connect to it there.
- Check the exact phone’s eligibility. Use T-Mobile’s IMEI checker. The carrier’s BYOD guidance says a device must support T-Mobile frequencies and be unlocked. Check the exact device and IMEI, not only the model family name.
- Confirm the network capability. If you are comparing specifications, verify that the particular model supports 5G and relevant T-Mobile bands. T-Mobile’s network page lists frequencies, but the carrier recommends its IMEI check as the simpler compatibility route.
- Check SIM and software for Standalone 5G. If basic compatibility checks pass but you are troubleshooting Standalone access, confirm that your SIM and manufacturer software meet T-Mobile’s requirements in its 5G SIM guidance.
- Contact support if the checks pass but service still fails. Give T-Mobile or the phone manufacturer the model number and IMEI-check result so they can investigate activation or model-specific settings. Menu names and steps vary by handset and operating system, so there is no universal settings path to recommend.
Should you keep the phone or replace it?
Start with the free IMEI and coverage checks. If the phone fails compatibility, a compatible unlocked 5G phone may be needed. Before buying, verify the exact listing’s model number, network support, and unlock status against T-Mobile’s BYOD guidance. If the phone is eligible and coverage is available, ask the carrier or manufacturer about activation, SIM, software, or device-specific settings before replacing it.
