To check an Xperia’s future-update eligibility, you need four things: the exact model, its country and carrier variant, Sony’s model-specific Android and security-support listing, and the software information currently shown on the phone. Sony states that Android-version availability depends on the country, region and operator, so a model name alone is not enough. Sony’s support table is the controlling reference for the Android versions and security-update end date it currently lists; the phone’s own update screen confirms what has actually reached your particular device.

The fastest reliable eligibility check

Use this sequence whenever you buy, sell or continue relying on an Xperia:

  1. Identify the complete model name and model number, not just a family name such as “Xperia 1” or “Xperia 10.”
  2. Record the country or region where the phone is being used and whether it is an operator-branded or operator-supplied version.
  3. Open Sony Support’s article “What Android version does my Xperia phone have?” (article SX243903, modified September 9, 2026) and find the exact model.
  4. Read both columns that matter: the Android-version progression and the listed security-update end date.
  5. On the phone, check the installed Android release and Android security patch in the software-update or About-phone screens. An operator can deliver an update later than Sony’s general listing.
  6. If the phone will access company data, check Sony’s Android Enterprise Recommended listing as an additional business-security signal.

Do not treat a rumored future Android release as confirmed merely because the hardware is powerful enough. Sony’s published model-and-market table is the evidence for what is promised at the time you check it.

Why the model, market and carrier all matter

Sony’s own wording is explicit: “The availability of the following phones and Android versions depends on the country/region and/or the operator.” That qualification applies to both phones sold under the same family name and updates that are already available elsewhere.

A phone imported from another market can therefore show a different update schedule from a locally sold unit. An operator-controlled build can also receive a release after an unlocked or other-market build. The support table should be read as model- and market-specific information, not a perpetual worldwide guarantee for every variant.

These distinctions are especially important when a seller advertises only “Xperia 1 V” or “Xperia 10 VI.” Before you decide that a used phone is supported, match the model designation and the phone’s sales region as closely as possible.

Step 1: identify the exact Xperia

Find the model in the phone

Open the phone’s Settings app and look under the About phone or device-information area. Record the model name exactly as shown and copy the model number if one is displayed. The model number is useful when two regional variants share a commercial name.

If the phone will not start, check its original box, purchase record or SIM-tray markings. Do not infer the model from the camera layout, screen size or a seller’s shortened description; those clues cannot reliably distinguish every generation or market version.

Record the location and operator

Write down the country in which the device is being used and the mobile operator supplying the SIM or the phone. If it was bought abroad, keep both the country of purchase and the current country. When contacting support or comparing a listing, state whether the device is an operator version or an unlocked retail version.

Keep Android and security information separate

Android version and Android security-patch level are different fields. A phone can stop receiving major Android upgrades while still receiving security patches, or it can be waiting for a patch even though its Android version is unchanged. Eligibility requires checking both.

Step 2: read Sony’s support table correctly

Locate the exact model row

In Sony Support’s “What Android version does my Xperia phone have?” article, search for the complete model name. Do not substitute a visually similar model or assume that all phones in a numbered series share one schedule. Sony’s table is the controlling source for the models and dates it lists at the time of writing.

Interpret the Android progression

The progression shows the Android releases Sony lists for that model, such as Android 14 → 15 → 16. It tells you which major releases are listed as delivered or supported in the table; it does not establish an unlisted next release. For example, a row ending at Android 16 does not, by itself, promise Android 17.

Android-version availability can still vary by country, region and operator. Use the progression as the support-table result for your model, then use the phone’s own update screen to determine whether your particular unit has received the release.

Interpret the security-update end date

The security end date is the practical cutoff for Sony-published security support. After that date, the phone may continue to boot, run apps and connect to networks, but Sony’s table no longer promises security updates beyond the listed date. That is a support-policy cutoff, not a guaranteed instant failure date.

Read the date with its full qualification. A date such as 2028-04-01 is the end date Sony lists for that model in its current support information; it is not a universal promise for every Xperia variant sold worldwide.

Current Xperia examples in Sony’s listing

The following examples show how to read the two key fields. They are Sony’s listed progressions and security-update end dates, not predictions for models absent from the table.

Model Release year Android versions listed Security updates listed through
Xperia 1 VI 2024 Android 14 → 15 → 16 2028-04-01
Xperia 10 VI 2024 Android 14 → 15 → 16 2028-05-01
Xperia 1 V 2023 Android 13 → 14 → 15 2026-05-01
Xperia 10 V 2023 Android 13 → 14 → 15 2026-06-01
Xperia 5 V 2023 Android 13 → 14 → 15 2026-08-01
Xperia 1 IV 2022 Android 12 → 13 → 14 2025-05-01
Xperia 10 IV 2022 Android 12 → 13 → 14 2025-05-01
Xperia 5 IV 2022 Android 12 → 13 → 14 2025-09-01

With the current date of October 16, 2026, the 2025 dates and the 2026 dates in the Xperia 1 V, Xperia 10 V and Xperia 5 V rows have passed. That does not prove the phones are unusable; it means Sony’s listed security-support window has ended for those rows. The Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 10 VI rows still show future dates in this table, subject to the model, market and operator qualifications above.

Step 3: verify what your own phone has received

Check the installed Android version and patch

Open Settings and use the About phone or Android-version section to note the installed Android release and the Android security-update date. Then open the phone’s Software update or System update entry and check for an available update. Menu wording can differ with the Android release and Xperia software version.

Record the result before troubleshooting. A useful record includes the model name, model number, Android version, security-patch date, and the date you performed the check. This prevents confusion when an update is staged in waves or when an operator’s version differs from Sony’s general listing.

Understand delayed operator rollout

Sony’s Xperia 1 VI Help Guide explains that software updates are delivered through the device’s update mechanism and notes operator dependence. If Sony lists an Android release but the phone reports that it is current, the difference can be rollout timing, region, operator approval or the exact variant—not necessarily an eligibility failure.

Use a stable internet connection, sufficient battery and available storage, then check again later if the device reports no update. Do not repeatedly reset the phone merely because another country’s handset received the release first; a reset does not change the model’s support policy or the operator’s rollout schedule.

Distinguish “no update available” from “no longer supported”

  • No update available while the support date is still future: check the exact variant and operator, then allow for staged rollout.
  • Android progression ends at an older release: Sony’s table does not list a later major release for that model; do not treat speculation as a commitment.
  • The listed security end date has passed: the phone may work normally, but Sony no longer publishes a security-support promise beyond that date.
  • The model cannot be found: recheck the model number, regional name and spelling before concluding that it is unsupported.

Will your Xperia get Android 17?

There is no universal answer based only on the Xperia brand or a processor generation. The defensible method is to look for the exact model in Sony’s current support article and see whether Android 17 is listed. In the examples above, the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 10 VI rows currently list Android 14, 15 and 16; the table supplied for this check does not list Android 17 for either model.

That is not the same as proving that Android 17 will never arrive. It means Android 17 is not an established entitlement in the cited table. Country, region and operator conditions still apply, and Sony can revise support information. Recheck the official article when Sony publishes a new release or when you are making a purchase decision.

Step 4: use Android Enterprise Recommended information for work phones

If the Xperia will access business email, customer records or managed applications, consult Sony’s Android Enterprise Recommended listing in addition to the consumer support table. Sony describes Android Enterprise Recommended as Google’s official recommendation program for business smartphones that meet performance, consistency and security-update requirements.

The listing is a supplementary enterprise check, not a replacement for the model-specific Sony Support row. It addresses business suitability and update expectations, while the support article identifies the Android progression and security end date for the individual model and market.

Sony’s current Japan listing gives the Xperia 10 VI a 90-day security-update frequency in that program. Treat that figure as the frequency stated on that Japan page, accessed in 2026; it is not evidence that every Xperia model in every country receives a patch every 90 days.

The same listing uses Japanese wording that says listed devices receive “2年以上のセキュリティ アップデート,” meaning more than two years of security updates. Because the listing is a program qualification and the consumer table is model- and market-specific, consult both when a company’s procurement or compliance policy depends on an end date.

How to compare two Xperia phones

When choosing between models, compare support rather than relying on the newer-looking camera, display or processor. Use these five axes:

Comparison What to record Why it matters
Android releases Versions already delivered and still listed for each exact model Shows the major-release position documented by Sony
Security end date The date Sony lists for each model Defines the practical end of Sony-published security support
Market and operator Country, region, carrier and unlocked/operator status Availability and timing can differ across variants
Enterprise status Whether the model appears in Android Enterprise Recommended Provides an additional business-security signal
Replacement timing Cost and effort of replacing the phone before support ends Helps weigh a lower purchase price against a shorter usable support window

For a work phone, a model with a later security end date can be the safer operational choice even when both phones run the same Android release today. For a personal phone, consider how long you expect to keep it and whether the remaining support period covers that ownership window.

What to do when support is ending

For a personal phone

  • Check whether your banking, password-manager, work and messaging apps still support the installed Android release.
  • Keep screen lock, encryption, backups and account recovery methods current.
  • Stop treating the device as a long-term security purchase once Sony’s listed security date has passed.
  • Plan a replacement before the cutoff if the phone handles sensitive accounts or payments.

For a work phone

  • Give the model, variant, current patch date and Sony end date to your administrator.
  • Check whether your company’s mobile-management policy requires a supported security patch.
  • Use Android Enterprise Recommended status as an additional procurement check, not as a substitute for the exact Sony support date.
  • Schedule migration, data transfer and authentication changes before the support window closes.

When buying used

Ask for a photograph of the About phone page and the Software update page, then match the model and region against Sony’s table. A low price is not a saving if the security-support end date has already passed or leaves too little time for your planned ownership.

Troubleshooting common eligibility mistakes

The seller says “three Android updates,” but Sony’s table differs

Use Sony’s current model-specific table as the reference for the listed progression. Marketing language can omit a regional qualification or combine major updates with security patches. Verify the actual model and market before relying on a seller’s summary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Another owner has a newer patch

Compare country, operator, model number and update-check date. Sony explicitly qualifies availability by country, region and operator, so two phones with the same commercial name can be at different rollout stages.

The phone shows an old Android version even though the model is eligible

Check the update screen again over a stable connection, confirm free storage and verify that the device is the same model and region as the Sony row. If the operator controls the build, ask that operator about its release schedule. Eligibility means the model is covered by the listed support information; it does not guarantee simultaneous delivery to every handset.

The date appears to be missing or unclear

Return to the exact model row and read the security field rather than estimating from the launch year. If Sony does not list a date for the precise variant, report that the date is not established in the current table instead of borrowing a date from a similar Xperia.

How often should you recheck?

Recheck Sony’s support article when you install a major Android release, change country or operator, buy a used Xperia, or approach the listed security end date. Keep a dated note of what Sony listed and what the phone displayed. This is especially useful for devices whose update timing is operator-dependent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A one-time check is enough to identify the current status, but it cannot turn an unlisted future Android version into a promise. The support table can change, and the phone’s update screen remains the best evidence of what has reached your individual unit.

Make the decision from the evidence

An Xperia is a sensible continuing choice when its exact model appears in Sony’s current table, its listed security date covers the period you need, and the phone’s own update screen is reasonably aligned after allowing for operator rollout. Treat an Xperia whose listed security date has passed as an unsupported device for security-planning purposes, even if it still performs well.

For the clearest answer, preserve the model, market, Android progression, security end date and current patch as five separate facts. That method avoids the two most common errors: assuming every Xperia receives the same updates and confusing a phone that still works with one that still has a current Sony security-support commitment.
