Your smart TV may identify what appears on its screen—including content from an antenna or an HDMI-connected device—through a feature called Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). That can support recommendations, audience measurement or advertising, depending on the TV, your settings and your market. It is not evidence that the TV is secretly filming you or recording conversations.
You can turn off the relevant viewing-data setting on some TVs, but that does not necessarily stop every kind of data collection or erase information already collected. The exact controls depend on the manufacturer and model.
What ACR does—and what it does not establish
Automatic Content Recognition identifies content by matching signals derived from the picture or sound against a catalog of known material. In Roku’s description, the TV creates an encrypted fingerprint from sampled screen pixels and checks it against a catalog. A match can identify a show or movie and offer ways to watch it; Roku says unmatched content, such as personal videos, will not be matched by its catalog. That is Roku’s explanation of its own system, not a description of every manufacturer’s implementation. Roku Support

What the documented controls do on each TV platform
| Platform | Documented control and coverage | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Roku TV | Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience > Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). Roku says the feature can collect information about content viewed through streaming, antenna or connected devices. | Roku’s support article, updated June 23, 2026, says ACR is not enabled out of the box. Previously collected or used information is retained after ACR is disabled. Menu labels can vary by device and software. Roku Support Roku Privacy Policy |
| VIZIO | All Settings > Privacy & Legal > Viewing Data. Older models may instead use All Settings > Admin & Privacy > Viewing Data. The disclosure describes data about programming, ads, gaming, connected devices, third-party apps and related events, as well as device and account identifiers. | Turning off Viewing Data does not itself stop separate Activity Data collection. VIZIO says a factory reset turns Activity Data off. Viewing Data is also separate from a Walmart-account opt-out. VIZIO Viewing Data Supplement VIZIO Privacy Policy |
| LG | Review the privacy or agreements area on the TV for ACR-related choices and withdraw agreements you do not want to keep. | LG’s September 2026 statement says processing depends on the feature, accepted agreements, market and user choices. It describes possible ACR-related sharing for audience segmentation and trends, and interest-based or cross-device advertising where separately consented. It does not give one durable menu path for every model, so consult model-specific support. LG’s privacy statement |
| Samsung and other platforms | Search the current TV settings for terms such as “Viewing Information,” “ACR,” “Viewing Data,” “Live Plus,” “Privacy” and “Interest-Based Advertising.” Verify the menu route with the manufacturer for your model and software. | The 2024 study tested selected Samsung and LG TVs, not the whole smart-TV market. Current official menu paths for Samsung, Fire TV, Google TV and other platforms are not established by the sources cited here. 2024 study |
How to review and change your TV’s privacy settings
- Identify the exact TV. Find the manufacturer, model and software version in the TV’s Settings or About/System Information screen. Menu names and available controls can vary across models and software releases.
- Open the privacy controls. Look for Privacy, Terms, Viewing Data or a similar section. On Roku TV, use Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience > Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), if that path appears on your device. On VIZIO, use All Settings > Privacy & Legal > Viewing Data, or the older-model path All Settings > Admin & Privacy > Viewing Data.
- Turn off the viewing-recognition option. The label may say ACR, Viewing Information, Viewing Data or Live Plus. If you cannot find it, check the manufacturer’s support page for your model rather than relying on a menu route for a different TV.
- Review separate controls. Check ad-personalization or interest-based advertising, voice recognition and any other privacy agreements separately. Turning off ACR is not a universal privacy switch.
- Review account-level choices too. An account setting may not change the TV’s own setting. VIZIO specifically distinguishes a Walmart-account opt-out—which may prevent sale or sharing on supported account-linked devices—from turning off Viewing Data on the television itself.
- Recheck after setup changes. Check your choices after a factory reset, setup flow or major software update. VIZIO says its factory reset turns Activity Data off; reset behavior for other brands is not established here.
Does turning off ACR stop all TV tracking?
No. It changes the specific viewing-recognition control, not necessarily every data practice tied to the TV, its apps or an account. Roku says information collected while ACR was on is retained after disabling it. VIZIO says turning off Viewing Data does not itself limit Activity Data collection. LG describes processing that can depend on other features, agreements and user choices. Review each relevant setting and the manufacturer’s current privacy disclosures rather than treating one toggle as a complete opt-out.

What independent testing found—and what it cannot tell you
A 2024 black-box study examined network traffic from selected Samsung and LG TVs in the UK and US. The authors reported that opting out stopped observed traffic to ACR servers on the tested devices. They also found differences by scenario and region. This is useful evidence about those test setups, not a guarantee about every model, firmware version, manufacturer or future configuration. Study details
Under the study’s test conditions, Samsung TVs transmitted up to twice as much data to ACR domains as LG TVs. That is a measured comparison for the equipment and scenarios examined—not a universal brand ranking or a claim that every Samsung TV always sends twice as much as every LG TV. The sources cited here do not provide a current, representative estimate of how many smart-TV owners have ACR enabled. 2024 study

There is also historical enforcement context: an FTC-hosted paper reports that VIZIO agreed to a $2.2 million settlement in 2017 in connection with FTC charges that it tracked viewing data without users’ knowledge or consent. That is a historical case, not a current penalty or a description of every present-day TV. FTC-hosted paper

Does ACR mean the TV is listening to conversations?
No such conclusion follows from the evidence described here. ACR is intended to recognize displayed content by comparing derived picture or audio signals with known content. The cited sources do not establish that ACR is secretly recording room conversations. Voice recognition is a separate control worth reviewing on your model.
Will disabling Viewing Data affect VIZIO TV performance?
VIZIO says turning off Viewing Data will not affect performance or online services. It does not, however, stop separate Activity Data collection by itself. VIZIO Viewing Data Supplement
Can I assume the setting stays off after a reset?
No. Check the TV after a reset or setup flow. VIZIO says a factory reset turns Activity Data off, but that statement does not establish reset behavior for other brands or every privacy option.
