Check the device’s support status and firmware, inspect router settings for changes you did not make, and review connected devices for suspicious traits or unexplained traffic. These checks can reveal warning signs, but no single symptom proves a device is infected. Start with the exact model and its manufacturer’s security guidance.
What can indicate possible botnet exposure?
The FBI’s May 7, 2025 alert about criminal proxy services exploiting end-of-life routers identifies overheating, connectivity problems, and unfamiliar router-setting changes as possible signs of infection. Each can also have an ordinary explanation, so treat them as prompts to investigate, not a diagnosis. Read the FBI alert.
For Android-based and streaming IoT devices, the FBI’s June 5, 2025 BADBOX 2.0 alert lists contextual warning signs such as:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- An unfamiliar app marketplace, or a prompt asking you to disable Google Play Protect.
- A generic streaming device advertised as unlocked or as providing free content.
- An unrecognizable device brand or an Android device that is not Play Protect certified.
- Unexplained or suspicious internet traffic, if your router or network tools provide that visibility.
The FBI cautions: “An indicator alone does not accurately determine malicious cyber activity or a crime.” A clue raises a question; it does not establish that your device is part of a botnet. See the BADBOX 2.0 alert.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Check the router or device in this order
- Identify the exact model and software version. Find the make, model, and firmware version on the device label or in its administration interface. For other IoT devices, note the model and installed software or operating-system version.
- Verify support with the manufacturer. Search the manufacturer’s official support information for that exact model. Check whether it remains supported, whether security updates are available, and whether the manufacturer has published relevant security notices. The FBI said in its May 2025 alert that routers dated 2010 or earlier likely no longer receive updates; treat that as a dated rule of thumb, not a substitute for checking your model. The FBI recommends replacing an end-of-life router if possible.
- Install official updates. Apply available firmware and software updates through the device maker’s official process. Update the operating system and apps on connected devices through trusted channels, rather than unofficial app marketplaces.
- Inspect router administration settings. Look for settings you do not recognize and check whether remote administration is enabled. Turn off remote administration and other unused services if you do not need them, then save the change and restart the router if its instructions require it. Use a strong, unique administrator password.
- Review devices on the network. Compare the router’s connected-device list with the equipment in your home. Investigate unfamiliar entries and consider whether any Android or streaming device has the warning signs listed above. Where available, review network traffic for activity you cannot explain.
- Follow device-specific recovery advice if concerns persist. Consult the manufacturer’s incident and recovery instructions. If you cannot account for suspicious settings or activity, contact the vendor or a qualified network-support professional; serious suspected criminal activity can also be reported to appropriate authorities.
Broader router-hardening guidance from the FBI, Cyber National Mission Force, and NSA also recommends patching, changing default passwords, disabling unnecessary services, separating devices into network segments where feasible, and monitoring traffic. Read the joint guidance.
When should you replace a router?
If the manufacturer no longer provides security updates for your exact router model, replacing it is the clearest way to regain access to ongoing security fixes. When choosing a replacement, check whether the manufacturer publishes support and firmware information, lets you disable remote management and unused services, and offers the network visibility your household needs. The cited guidance does not rank router models or identify a best one.

- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Why a reboot is not a universal cleanup
Restarting a router may be part of a settings change or troubleshooting procedure, but it should not be treated as proof that malware has been removed. In a specific advisory about Russian cyber actors using compromised routers, the FBI and partners said rebooting did not remove the malware involved. Their directions for that incident included a hardware factory reset, current firmware, changed default credentials, and firewall rules blocking unwanted remote management from the internet. Those steps are specific to the EdgeRouter incident and should not be applied as a universal cleanup recipe. Read the FBI and partners’ advisory.

What the BADBOX 2.0 warning does—and does not—mean
The FBI’s June 2025 announcement described BADBOX 2.0 as a botnet consisting of millions of infected devices. That figure refers to the campaign; it is not a household infection rate or a count of devices currently active. The alert explains why suspicious device characteristics deserve attention, but neither those characteristics nor a symptom such as slow connectivity can by themselves confirm infection.
