Crashes, freezes, and blue screens can justify a memory test, but they do not prove that RAM is the cause. Start with Windows Memory Diagnostic; if you need a test outside Windows, run MemTest86 from a bootable USB drive. Treat an error as evidence that the system failed under the tested conditions—not as proof that a particular memory stick is defective.

What a RAM test can—and cannot—tell you

Random restarts, freezes, crashes, corrupted files, and Windows stop errors are reasons to investigate memory, but they are not a diagnosis. A stop error can have more than one cause. Microsoft’s guidance on stop errors lists memory among possible factors for some errors, alongside other hardware and software problems. A memory test helps determine whether the system shows errors while working with RAM; it cannot, by itself, identify the defective component or rule out every intermittent problem.

Think of the result as a clue to follow up. If a test reports errors, investigate the memory configuration and other hardware before replacing parts. If several MemTest86 passes complete without errors, that is reassuring: PassMark’s user guide says it is “very likely” the memory is functioning properly after multiple clean passes. It is not an absolute guarantee that an intermittent fault will never occur, particularly if the problem appears only when the computer is hot, under a particular workload, or with a different configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A test also describes the machine as it was configured when you ran it. A result obtained with two modules installed, altered memory settings, or a particular slot does not automatically describe each module separately. Record the conditions so that a later comparison is meaningful.

Choose a test: Windows Memory Diagnostic or MemTest86

Test How it runs Advantages Limitations
Windows Memory Diagnostic Built into Windows; start it from Windows and follow its prompts. No separate download or boot media is needed, so it is a convenient first check. It follows the Windows workflow and may require a restart. Microsoft’s result-notification and Event Viewer wording can vary by Windows version.
MemTest86 A standalone tester that boots from a USB flash drive and tests memory outside the installed operating system. It provides an independent environment when Windows is unstable and supports current memory technologies, including DDR5, according to PassMark’s official product information. You must create boot media and select the appropriate boot option. A full pass takes a variable amount of time, depending on factors such as CPU speed, memory speed, and memory size.

Use Windows Memory Diagnostic for a convenient first check. Choose MemTest86 when you want a test that runs independently of the installed Windows environment, or when a Windows-based check has not explained persistent instability. Neither result should be treated as a complete diagnosis of a specific DIMM, motherboard, CPU, memory controller, or other component.

Before testing, record the symptoms and recent changes

Write down when the problem occurs and what changed shortly before it began. These details can help you decide what to check next, but they are clues rather than proof of a memory fault.

  • Note whether the computer freezes, restarts, crashes to a blue screen, displays corrupted data, or fails to start reliably.
  • Record any displayed stop code or error message exactly as written. Microsoft’s documentation describes several possible causes for stop errors, so do not use a code alone to conclude that RAM is failing.
  • Note whether the issue started after installing or changing memory, changing another hardware component, or adjusting memory settings.
  • Write down whether the failure happens during startup, while idle, during a demanding application, or at apparently random times.
  • Keep track of every test you run, its result, how long it ran, and which module and slot were in use. This is especially useful if you later test modules separately.

If you need to open the computer later, first check the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions. Save important work and shut the system down completely. Do not begin handling memory while the system is powered on, and do not assume that a slot arrangement from one motherboard applies to another.

Run Windows Memory Diagnostic

  1. Save your work. Starting the diagnostic may require a restart. Close open files and applications before proceeding, and make sure you can sign in again after the restart.
  2. Find the tool. In Windows search, search for Windows Memory Diagnostic and start the diagnostic. The name and presentation may differ slightly between releases.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompt. Windows will run the test and restart as directed. The exact wording can vary across Windows versions; follow the prompt shown on your computer rather than assuming every release uses the same menus.
  4. Let the check finish. Avoid powering off the computer during the scheduled diagnostic. An interrupted check is not evidence that memory passed.
  5. Review the result after signing in. Microsoft describes a notification with the test result after the diagnostic runs. If you do not see it, Microsoft also documents checking the corresponding diagnostic result in Event Viewer. The exact interface and navigation may differ by Windows release.
  6. Save the finding with your notes. Record whether Windows reported an error or no error, along with the date and the configuration. A record prevents you from confusing an earlier result with a later test performed after changing settings or modules.
  7. Decide what to do next. An error is a reason to investigate further, not proof that a particular memory module is bad. If the result is clean but the instability continues, consider a bootable test and investigate other possible causes as well.

Windows Memory Diagnostic is useful because it is already available, not because a clean notification guarantees perfect memory. Treat it as one piece of evidence. If symptoms are severe or the computer cannot remain stable long enough to use Windows, move to a bootable method or the manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics.

Run MemTest86 from a bootable USB drive

PassMark describes MemTest86 as a standalone memory tester that boots from USB. Its official product information includes support for current memory technologies such as DDR5. The test runs outside the installed operating system, which gives you another way to check the system if Windows itself is unstable.

  1. Read the current official instructions. Use PassMark’s instructions for the current MemTest86 release and your computer. The precise process for creating boot media and starting from it can depend on the system.
  2. Choose a suitable USB drive. The available guidance establishes the need for a USB flash drive but does not establish a universal capacity, speed, or model. Use a drive that you can dedicate to the task and follow the current instructions rather than relying on an assumed specification.
  3. Protect the USB drive’s contents. Back up files you want to keep before writing bootable test media. Creating boot media may erase or replace existing contents. Do not use a drive containing the only copy of important documents.
  4. Create the bootable drive and start the test. Follow the official instructions to prepare the drive and boot the computer from it. Do not assume a particular key or boot-menu path: those details vary by computer and firmware.
  5. Confirm that the tester, not Windows, has started. If the computer simply loads Windows, review the manufacturer’s boot-selection instructions and try again. Do not interpret a failed boot attempt as a memory pass.
  6. Allow the test to complete. A full pass has no universal duration. PassMark says the time depends on factors including CPU speed, memory speed, and memory size. Avoid treating an incomplete test as a clean pass, and do not stop simply because the screen has shown no error yet.
  7. Record the outcome. Note whether errors appeared and, if the program displays details, save the relevant information. If you later test modules separately, record the module and slot used for every run.

Multiple error-free passes are more reassuring than one brief run. PassMark’s guide says that after multiple clean passes it is very likely that the memory is functioning properly, but it does not promise that every intermittent fault has been ruled out. There is no universal number of passes or guaranteed duration that applies to every computer, so follow the circumstances of the problem and the official guidance.

A USB flash drive is needed for this bootable route, but the available guidance does not establish a particular drive capacity or model. Follow the requirements in the current official instructions rather than choosing a drive based on an assumed specification.

Interpret errors without blaming a DIMM too soon

PassMark’s troubleshooting guidance states: “Please be aware that not all errors reported by MemTest86 are due to bad memory.” A reported error means the system failed a memory test under the conditions in which it was run. That matters, but it does not establish which component caused the failure.

PassMark notes that a faulty CPU or motherboard can cause a memory test or system to fail in a similar way. Errors may also depend on memory settings or on whether modules are tested together. The address shown by a test, or a failure with all modules installed, does not necessarily point cleanly to one defective stick. PassMark cautions that identifying the failing module is not always clear-cut.

  • Errors appear with more than one configuration: the result warrants investigation, but does not single out a DIMM. Settings, the motherboard, CPU, memory controller, compatibility, or another issue may be involved.
  • Errors occur only with modules installed together: do not assume that either individual module is defective. The combined configuration or its settings may be relevant.
  • Errors follow one module when tested in appropriate conditions: that pattern points more strongly toward the module, but it remains a diagnostic inference rather than an absolute proof.
  • Errors follow one physical slot: the slot, motherboard, memory channel, or related circuitry becomes a possibility. Avoid replacing a DIMM solely because it failed in one slot.
  • Errors change after settings are altered: return to the manufacturer’s default configuration before drawing conclusions. A settings-dependent failure is not automatically a failed component.
  • A test reports no errors: this is useful evidence, especially after multiple clean MemTest86 passes, but it is not a guarantee against faults that occur only intermittently or under different conditions.

Narrow down whether the problem follows a module or slot

If you are comfortable working inside the system and the manufacturer’s instructions permit it, testing modules separately can help distinguish possibilities. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed way to identify the cause. Follow the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s handling and installation guidance; if you are unsure, ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional for help.

  1. Return memory settings to their defaults. If you changed memory settings, use the manufacturer’s guidance to restore the default configuration before comparing results. This helps avoid treating a settings-dependent error as proof of a defective module.
  2. Shut the system down and prepare it safely. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for powering down and accessing the memory. Do not remove or install modules while the system is running.
  3. Label the modules if necessary. Make a simple record of which physical module was tested and where it was installed. Do not rely on memory or on the test’s address alone to identify a stick.
  4. Test one module at a time. Use the recommended slot and procedure in the system’s documentation. Run the same test under comparable conditions for each module and write down the module and slot used.
  5. Compare what the errors follow. A failure associated with one module across appropriate tests points more strongly toward that module. A failure associated with a slot, or one that appears only when modules are installed together, leaves other possibilities open, including the motherboard, memory controller, compatibility, or configuration.
  6. Repeat a suspicious result. A single clean or failed run can be misleading when the issue is intermittent. Repeating the same comparison under the same conditions gives you a more useful pattern, while still not creating a guarantee.
  7. Stop if the pattern is unclear. Mixed or inconsistent results do not justify guessing at a replacement. PassMark warns that isolating a failing module is not always straightforward.

Do not infer compatibility from physical fit alone. Before ordering memory, check the exact computer or motherboard documentation and the configuration it supports. The test result cannot tell you which replacement specification is appropriate.

What to do if errors persist—or tests are clean

If a test reports errors

Use the result to guide further checks rather than replacing memory immediately. Restore default settings if appropriate, compare modules individually only if it is safe and permitted, and consult the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s diagnostics and support instructions. Microsoft specifically recommends manufacturer hardware diagnostics in its discussion of a kernel in-page error; that stop error can also have causes such as storage faults, so it is not a memory-specific diagnosis.

Before buying replacement RAM, check the exact specifications for your computer or motherboard. The symptoms and a test result alone do not establish which memory module is compatible, or even that a DIMM is the failing part. If the fault cannot be isolated, a repair or diagnostic service may be more sensible than buying several parts by trial and error.

If tests show no errors but instability continues

A clean result lowers concern about memory but does not prove that RAM or another component can never fail intermittently. Review the timing of the crashes and recent changes, consider whether a longer MemTest86 run with multiple clean passes is appropriate, and follow manufacturer diagnostics for the system. Microsoft’s discussion of stop errors and hardware diagnostics is a reminder that a blue screen may have causes other than RAM.

If you cannot isolate the cause

When results vary by slot, appear only with modules together, or do not reproduce consistently, consult the computer or motherboard manufacturer. A repair professional may be able to test the system configuration and components without relying on the test address or a single run to identify the fault. Provide your symptom timeline, stop codes, test name, number of passes, and module-and-slot notes so the next person can reproduce the reasoning.

Common mistakes that make a RAM test less useful

  • Calling a blue screen a RAM diagnosis: stop errors have multiple possible causes.
  • Stopping after an incomplete run: an interrupted or failed boot is not a clean result.
  • Replacing the first module that shows an error: CPU, motherboard, settings, slot, and combined-module behavior can produce similar failures.
  • Changing several things at once: if you change settings, slots, and modules together, you cannot tell which change affected the result.
  • Assuming one address identifies one stick: the displayed address does not always map cleanly to a defective module.
  • Using an unverified USB: writing boot media can erase its existing files, so back it up first.
  • Choosing replacement RAM from the test alone: compatibility must be checked against the exact computer or motherboard specifications.

Questions readers commonly ask

Does a Windows Memory Diagnostic error prove my RAM is bad?

No. It shows that the diagnostic encountered a problem under its test conditions. Investigate settings, modules, slots, the motherboard, CPU, and other hardware before deciding what to replace.

How long should MemTest86 run?

There is no universal duration. PassMark says full-pass time varies with CPU speed, memory speed, and memory size. Let the planned pass finish, and do not call an interrupted run clean.

How many MemTest86 passes are enough?

No single pass count guarantees that every intermittent fault is excluded. PassMark’s guide says multiple clean passes make it very likely that memory is functioning properly. Choose a sensible longer run when symptoms are intermittent and record how many complete passes finished.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a special USB drive?

You need a USB flash drive for the bootable MemTest86 route. The official information used here does not establish a universal capacity, speed, or brand requirement. Back up the drive and follow PassMark’s current instructions.

Can MemTest86 test DDR5?

PassMark’s official product information lists support for current memory technologies including DDR5. Check the current release instructions for your particular computer.

What if errors occur only when both RAM sticks are installed?

That pattern does not automatically mean either stick is defective. The combined configuration, compatibility, memory settings, motherboard, or memory controller may be involved. Test modules separately under comparable conditions if the manufacturer’s instructions permit it.

What if errors occur only in one slot?

A slot or motherboard issue becomes a possibility, as does a problem related to a memory channel. Compare modules and slots carefully, keep notes, and avoid condemning a module solely because it failed in one location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I replace RAM after one error?

Not automatically. Repeat and isolate the test when safe, restore default settings, and consult manufacturer diagnostics. A persistent pattern that follows one module is stronger evidence than a single unexplained error.

What if every test is clean but the PC still crashes?

Multiple clean passes reduce concern about memory but do not rule out every intermittent fault or another cause. Review recent changes, stop codes, storage and other hardware diagnostics, and seek manufacturer or professional support if instability continues.

Can I create MemTest86 media on a USB containing files?

Creating bootable media may erase or replace the drive’s contents. Copy anything important elsewhere first, then follow the current official creation instructions.

Bottom line

Start with Windows Memory Diagnostic, then use MemTest86 from a USB drive when you need an independent check. Record symptoms and configuration, complete the tests, and interpret errors as evidence of instability rather than automatic proof of a bad DIMM. If a pattern follows one module, suspicion increases; if it follows a slot or appears only with modules together, keep the motherboard, CPU, memory controller, compatibility, and settings in consideration. Check exact hardware specifications before buying a replacement, and use manufacturer or professional diagnostics when the cause remains unclear.

What does a MemTest86 error prove?

It proves that the system failed under the tested conditions. PassMark cautions that errors can also involve the CPU, motherboard, settings, slot, memory controller, or combined-module configuration.

Should I test RAM with Windows Memory Diagnostic first?

It is a convenient built-in first check. If Windows is unstable or the result needs independent confirmation, run MemTest86 from a bootable USB drive.

Why test one RAM module at a time?

Comparing modules separately can show whether a failure follows one module or one slot. The pattern is useful evidence, but isolation is not always clear-cut.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I buy replacement RAM based only on a failed test?

No. Confirm the exact computer or motherboard specifications and investigate other possible causes before ordering a replacement.

What should I do if my computer will not boot Windows?

Use the manufacturer’s boot guidance to start a standalone test such as MemTest86 from USB, or seek professional assistance. Do not treat an unsuccessful boot attempt as a memory pass.

The Bottom Line

Use Windows Memory Diagnostic for a quick first check and MemTest86 for a bootable, independent test. Complete multiple passes when appropriate, keep module-and-slot notes, and remember that an error identifies system instability—not automatically a defective RAM stick. Isolate carefully, verify compatibility before replacing parts, and involve the manufacturer or a qualified technician when results remain ambiguous.
