The first check is simple: open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and write down the complete system-software version shown there. Then compare that exact version—and your console context and intended homebrew application—with current documentation from the relevant exploit developers.
A matching firmware number is only a compatibility clue. It is not proof that an exploit is reliable, that a particular application works, or that your account, warranty, repair eligibility, online access, games, and security posture are unaffected. Treat the decision as a risk assessment, not as a yes-or-no jailbreak test.
What “run homebrew safely” can and cannot mean
On a PS5, “safe” has several different meanings. A procedure may be technically compatible yet still carry service, security, data-loss, or legal-contract risks. Separate these questions before you make any decision:
- Technical compatibility: Does documentation from the exploit developers support the exact system-software version installed on your console?
- Application compatibility: Does the specific homebrew program you want to use support that exploit, firmware, console context, and required dependencies?
- Operational reliability: Is the method documented well enough to understand its prerequisites, failure modes, recovery process, and limitations?
- Platform consequences: What official features, security updates, games, online services, warranty, repair, or account access could you give up or put at risk?
- Evidence quality: Is the information from primary developer documentation and current release notes, or only from an old headline, video, forum post, or compatibility chart?
No source establishes that a particular homebrew action is consequence-free. Checking your version does not modify the console, and a firmware match does not prevent account or service consequences.

Step 1: Find and record the complete PS5 system-software version
Use Sony’s documented menu path
- Turn on the PS5 and sign in to the profile you normally use.
- Open Settings from the home screen.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software.
- Open Console Information.
- Copy the complete system-software version exactly as displayed.
Sony gives this path in its PS5 Safety Guide for the CFI-20XX family. Do not round the number, omit trailing digits, or record only a major release. Exploit support can depend on a precise firmware build.
Make a dated record
Write the version in a note together with the date you checked it. Save a photograph or screenshot for your own records if that is convenient, but do not upload a console serial number, account identifier, or other personal information to an exploit forum. The date matters because Sony can publish new system software and exploit documentation can change quickly.
Also record the details that the developer documentation asks for, such as the console model or hardware revision, region if relevant, and whether the intended application requires a particular exploit chain or payload. The available evidence does not establish a complete firmware-by-firmware matrix for every PS5 hardware revision, so do not assume that two consoles on the same version behave identically.

Step 2: Check current exploit documentation, not just a firmware headline
Start with the developers’ own documentation
Search for release notes, a compatibility table, issue tracker, or instructions published by the developers of the exploit and the homebrew application. Confirm that the page is current and that it identifies the exact firmware range, required exploit entry point, supported console context, and known limitations. A third-party article can help you locate documentation, but it should not be your final authority.
A headline such as “PS5 firmware X is exploitable” can hide important conditions. It may refer to a proof of concept rather than a usable exploit, a temporary demonstration, a particular hardware revision, or an exploit that reaches a limited stage but cannot load the application you want. Read the primary notes for dependencies and failure recovery before treating the result as usable.
Match all three versions
Make three separate matches:
- Console firmware: Compare the complete version from Console Information with the developer’s stated supported versions.
- Exploit or payload release: Check whether the release you would use supports that firmware and whether an update changed the supported range.
- Homebrew application: Verify that the particular application supports the exploit, payload format, and system environment. “The exploit works” does not mean every homebrew application works.
If any one of these is unclear, classify the result as unverified, not compatible. Do not fill a missing table cell by inference from an adjacent firmware version.

Keep the access date visible
Copy the publication or update date from each page into your notes. A compatibility range is a snapshot, not a permanent property of the console. Sony’s updates can change the official software environment, while exploit developers can revise their code, withdraw a release, or document a newly discovered limitation.

What the current compatibility report actually establishes
Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026 that an exploit project called Relapse supported PS5 firmware versions 7.00 through 13.60. The report also noted that newer games or updates may require more recent firmware. This is a dated secondary report, not official confirmation from Sony and not a substitute for the exploit developers’ current documentation.

Compare the two practical paths before changing anything
Many people focus on whether an exploit exists and overlook what remaining on an older official version can cost. Sony says system-software updates add features, improve usability, and enhance security. Sony also directs users to install updates only with official update files supplied by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

There is no universal rule that an older firmware is “safer.” It may preserve a technical option while leaving you without later security fixes, features, game support, or online functionality. Decide which trade-off matters most for your use rather than treating age as a safety rating.

System-software licence terms
Sony’s PS5 System Software Licence Agreement applies to system software, firmware, and updates. The published Nordic agreement describes possible responses to violations, including disabling access to some software or online use and denying warranty, repair, or other services. Legal wording can differ by country, so read the agreement applicable to your account and console.

These are powers described in the agreement, not a prediction that every person who runs homebrew will receive a particular penalty. The sources do not establish a probability of enforcement for a specific application or exploit. Do not present the licence language as proof that a suspension is inevitable, and do not present technical compatibility as protection from those terms.
What a console suspension can affect
PlayStation’s suspension support page says a console suspension can prevent access to accounts on that console, online-required game modes, and PlayStation Store content. That page explains the effects of a suspension; it does not establish how likely suspension is for a particular homebrew action.
If access to online-required games, purchases, or account services is essential, treat the possibility of losing those functions as a material downside before proceeding. A second account, disconnecting from the internet, or resetting the console is not established by the cited sources as a guarantee against suspension or other consequences.
A cautious pre-decision workflow
Before reading exploit instructions
- Complete the official version check and save the exact number and date.
- List the homebrew applications you actually want to run; compatibility is application-specific.
- List the official features, games, updates, online modes, purchases, warranty, and repair support you cannot afford to lose.
- Read the current Sony licence and suspension information for your jurisdiction.
While evaluating developer documentation
- Identify the original developer or release repository rather than relying on a reposted video or shortened link.
- Confirm the exact firmware range and whether the statement covers your hardware context.
- Check prerequisites, dependencies, payload versions, known failure states, and recovery instructions.
- Verify that your chosen homebrew application is listed as supported, not merely that an exploit reaches a usable stage.
- Note the page’s update date and look for issues reported after that date.
- Stop if the instructions require an unknown file, a modified update package, or a claim that conflicts with Sony’s official-file guidance.
Keep the official update boundary clear
Sony’s update guidance says not to install an update using data other than the official update file supplied by Sony Interactive Entertainment. That instruction concerns official system-software updates; it is also a useful warning against downloading a purported update package from an unverified source. Do not treat a file described as a “jailbreak update” or “downgrade” as official merely because it uses Sony’s branding.
The cited material does not establish that a USB drive, cable, storage accessory, repair tool, or commercial “kit” is required to check your version or assess compatibility. Do not buy hardware just because a video includes it.
Red flags that should end the compatibility check
- The source gives only a major firmware number and omits the complete build.
- The compatibility claim has no date or has not been updated after a Sony system-software release.
- The page promises that every PS5 model and every homebrew application works.
- The instructions say a firmware match guarantees no ban, no warranty issue, or no data loss.
- The download is an unexplained executable, a repacked update, or a file hosted only on an anonymous mirror.
- The author cannot explain how to recover from a failed payload or what functions are unavailable afterward.
- The claim appears only in a social-media post, thumbnail, or affiliate page and links to no primary developer documentation.
Any one of these signs means you have insufficient evidence to call the setup safe. Keep the console on its current official software while you seek documentation you can independently verify.

Common misunderstandings and their corrections
“My number is in the reported range, so every homebrew app will run.”
No. The reported range is a technical compatibility claim about an exploit project at a particular date. Each application can have additional requirements, and the report is not a complete matrix.

Updating may remove access to an exploit path, while staying on an older version may block newer games, updates, features, and security fixes. Treat the choice as potentially one-way for your purposes and verify the consequences before changing software.
“Going offline makes the process safe.”
The cited sources do not establish that disconnecting from the internet prevents suspension, licence consequences, or hardware and software failures. Offline use may change what services are reachable, but it is not a guarantee.
“A factory reset removes every risk.”
No cited source establishes that a factory reset restores eligibility for warranty, repair, online services, or account access after a modification. Do not use a reset as a safety guarantee.
“Sony’s security updates prove that old firmware is dangerous, so homebrew is automatically unsafe.”
Sony says updates enhance security, but that statement does not quantify the risk of a specific older version or prove that every homebrew setup is unsafe. Weigh the known loss of later updates against the technical and service risks you are considering.
If the evidence is incomplete, classify the result correctly
Use one of these labels in your notes:
- Supported: Current primary documentation names your exact firmware, console context, exploit release, and intended application.
- Partially supported: The firmware and exploit are documented, but the application, hardware revision, or required dependency is not confirmed.
- Reported only: A dated secondary source mentions compatibility, but current primary documentation has not been checked.
- Unsupported or unknown: Your exact version is absent, contradictory pages exist, or the documentation is stale or anonymous.
Only the first category answers the narrow technical question with reasonable confidence, and even it does not answer the separate service, warranty, security, or account questions. The other categories are reasons to wait, not invitations to guess.

A decision checklist you can reuse
- Have you copied the complete version from Settings > System > System Software > Console Information?
- Did you record the date and your console context?
- Does current developer documentation—not just a news report—name that exact version?
- Does the same documentation support the exploit release and the particular homebrew application?
- Have you read the prerequisites, limitations, recovery steps, and issue reports?
- Are you prepared to miss later security updates, features, games, or online services?
- Have you considered Sony’s licence language about software, online access, warranty, repair, and other services?
- Do you understand that a suspension can affect accounts, online-required game modes, and PlayStation Store content?
- Are you avoiding unofficial update files and unexplained downloads?
- Can you accept an unknown outcome rather than relying on a promise of guaranteed safety?
Sources and dates to verify
Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide (CFI-20XX) supplies the version-lookup path and explains that system-software updates provide additional features, usability improvements, and enhanced security. Sony’s support article on updating PS5 system software instructs users to use only official update files supplied by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Sony’s PS5 System Software Licence Agreements describe the scope of the licence for system software, firmware, and updates. The Norway agreement contains the detailed examples of possible remedies, including disabling some software or online use and denying warranty, repair, or other services; wording may vary by jurisdiction.

The practical answer

No firmware match can remove those separate risks.
