A PS5 can run a Linux-based gaming environment through the community ps5-linux project only when its exact firmware is on the project’s supported list and the required exploit-based boot process works. Model name alone is not enough: first record the installed system software version, then compare it with the project’s version-by-version list. This is not an official PS5 setting or a normal Linux installation, and firmware 8.00 or newer is listed as unsupported.

Start with the exact firmware, not the console’s name

“PS5 Phat” and “PS5 Slim” describe hardware families, but they do not by themselves establish Linux eligibility. The first gate is the installed system software version. The ps5-linux documentation says support is tied to specific releases, and that versions between the listed releases may not work. A console cannot be made eligible simply by buying a faster SSD or by choosing a different Linux distribution.

Find the installed version

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Choose System, then System Software.
  3. Open Console Information and copy the exact System Software version, including every digit.
  4. Record whether the console is a Phat or Slim model. Keep the version and model together when checking the project documentation.

Do not use the version shown in an old screenshot, a forum signature, or a retailer listing. The installed value on your own console is the one that determines the next step. If the console is connected to the internet, avoid accepting an update while you are still checking eligibility; the project recommends disabling automatic updates as part of its setup guidance.

Firmware 8.00 and higher is identified in the README’s FAQ as unsupported. The project also states that downgrading is not possible, so an ineligible console should not be updated in the hope that it can later be returned to an earlier release. An “almost matching” number is not a safe assumption: use the exact entry in the live README, because exploit support can change as the community project changes.

Understand what “run Linux” means on a PS5

It is an exploit-launched soft-mod

The ps5-linux loader is not a Sony feature, an option in the normal PS5 settings, or a dual-boot mode supported by the console manufacturer. The README describes running a jailbreak or exploit and then booting a Linux environment. Follow the project’s current documentation for the loader and boot sequence rather than relying on an old tutorial, since exploit behavior and supported firmware are version-specific.

The exploit must be run again

The project describes the modification as a soft-mod. Linux boot requires running the exploit again after the console has been fully restarted. This means a successful first boot does not permanently convert the PS5 into a Linux machine. Plan for the loader step whenever the system loses the state required by the project.

Standby and resume are not supported

The README says standby/resume is unsupported. Treat a Linux session as something to shut down and start again, not something to leave suspended like an ordinary PS5 game. A failed resume should not be interpreted as proof that the image or hardware is defective; a complete restart and a fresh exploit attempt are the documented operating model.

Check the hardware you need before starting

Item Requirement or status Why it matters
USB storage At least 64 GB is required. The project recommends an external SSD. Stores the Linux boot files and image used by the loader.
USB keyboard Required Needed for setup and interaction during the Linux boot process.
USB mouse Required Needed for graphical setup and desktop control.
Keyboard/mouse dongles Supported Wireless peripherals can work when their USB receiver is presented to the console.
USB WLAN adapter Optional Provides an alternative networking path if the selected image and adapter are supported.
Bluetooth dongle Optional Can provide Bluetooth connectivity where the chosen Linux image supports it.
Compatible M.2 SSD Optional and limited to configurations documented by the project Can be dedicated to Linux on supported firmware, but it is not a universal storage upgrade for this setup.

The 64 GB figure is a minimum capacity, not a guarantee that every image or future release will fit comfortably. An external SSD is the project’s recommendation, but storage speed does not bypass a firmware restriction. Buying a drive, keyboard, mouse, or adapter cannot make an unsupported PS5 eligible.

Know the M.2 limitation before installing one

The documented M.2 arrangement is separate from ordinary PS5 game-storage use. Where the project indicates M.2 support, the drive can be dedicated to Linux; it cannot simultaneously serve as the PS5 game-storage drive in that configuration. Keep that distinction in mind when planning capacity.

For the 3.xx setup, the README says the console fails to boot with an M.2 attached. If your console is on 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, or 3.21, do not treat an M.2 as a harmless optional addition. Use the supported external-USB path described by the project instead. On later listed versions, verify the exact M.2 procedure and compatibility requirements in the live README before opening the console or moving data.

Choose an image without assuming game compatibility

The project’s image release page viewed for this guide listed multiple distributions. The release metadata showed kernel 7.1.7 and a build date of 2026-08-29. Available images listed there included:

Image family listed What that tells you What it does not tell you
Ubuntu 26.04 A general-purpose Linux distribution image is available. It does not establish that every game, driver, or peripheral works on your PS5.
Arch An Arch-based image is available. It does not guarantee an easy gaming setup or a particular launcher’s compatibility.
CachyOS A CachyOS image is available. It does not provide a console-specific game success guarantee.
Fedora 44 A Fedora image is available. Image availability is not the same as tested support for every title.
Proxmox VE 8 A virtualization-focused image is listed. It is not automatically a desktop gaming environment.
Debian 12 A Debian image is available. You may need to configure software and drivers for your intended use.
Bazzite variants Gaming-oriented Bazzite images are listed. The listing does not promise that each Bazzite variant works identically on every model and firmware.
SteamOS 3 (Holo) A SteamOS 3 image is listed by the project. It is not official SteamOS support for PS5 hardware.

Valve describes SteamOS as Linux-based and says Proton allows much of the Steam library to run on SteamOS; that general statement is not a compatibility certification for a PS5 installation. The SteamOS information page should be read as background on SteamOS and Proton, not as a promise that a particular PS5 image, game, anti-cheat system, controller, or display mode will work.

Use a conservative installation and boot workflow

The project’s exact commands and exploit details can change, so use the current README as the operational authority. A safe decision sequence looks like this:

  1. Freeze the eligibility decision. Write down the model and exact firmware before changing settings or connecting storage. If the number is not on the supported list, stop.
  2. Read the live loader documentation. Open the ps5-linux loader README and check its prerequisites, supported combinations, warnings, and any image-specific notes.
  3. Prepare a separate USB drive of at least 64 GB. Use an external SSD if practical. Do not assume that a drive containing PS5 games can be reused without following the project’s preparation instructions.
  4. Connect the required peripherals. Have a USB keyboard and mouse ready; a wireless keyboard or mouse should use a USB dongle that the project supports.
  5. Choose an image release. Download only an image listed on the project’s release page, and note its version and build date so you can identify what you installed.
  6. Run the documented exploit/soft-mod procedure. The project requires this step to hand control to the Linux loader. Do not substitute instructions written for a different firmware.
  7. Boot and test basic operation first. Confirm that Linux reaches its desktop or console, that the keyboard and mouse respond, and that storage is visible before troubleshooting games.
  8. Expect to repeat the exploit after a full restart. Do not rely on standby/resume, which the project does not support.

This sequence intentionally avoids a one-size-fits-all jailbreak recipe. Exploit instructions are firmware-dependent, and an obsolete sequence can leave you with a non-booting setup or an unexpected system update. The README is the place to verify the current loader files and exact actions.

Separate Linux boot success from game success

A working Linux desktop proves only that your particular console, firmware, loader state, image, and peripherals reached Linux. It does not prove that a game will launch, render correctly, accept input, connect to online services, or maintain stable performance.

Evaluate a game in layers:

  • Launch layer: Does the title start under the selected distribution and runtime?
  • Graphics layer: Do the Linux kernel, graphics stack, resolution, HDR settings, and display connection behave correctly?
  • Input layer: Are the keyboard, mouse, controller, headset, and any wireless adapters recognized?
  • Service layer: Do launchers, account sign-in, multiplayer services, and anti-cheat systems allow the game to operate?
  • Session layer: Can you exit and restart reliably, given that standby/resume is unsupported?

The reviewed project materials do not provide a complete, independently validated game-by-game guarantee for every console and setup. Treat distribution images as starting points, not as a compatibility matrix. Keep your expectations especially cautious for titles with kernel-level anti-cheat, proprietary launchers, unusual peripherals, or strict online requirements.

Protect the firmware state and understand the terms

Automatic updates

The loader README recommends disabling automatic updates. That can preserve a supported firmware state, but it also means you are choosing not to receive normal system-software updates automatically. Check the project’s current instructions before changing the setting, and periodically verify whether the project still supports your version.

No casual downgrade plan

The project says downgrading is not possible. Do not update on the assumption that you can return to a supported release later, and do not follow a downgrade guide written for another model or firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regional legal and licensing context

Sony’s US PS5 System Software Licence Agreement says updates may include security changes that prevent unauthorized or modified hardware or software from being used. The agreement also contains restrictions concerning modified software and security circumvention. That is the wording of the US agreement, not a universal legal conclusion: terms and applicable law can differ by country. Read the agreement for your region and understand that exploit-based modification can affect support, online access, or the console’s ability to accept future software.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely decision point What to do
Your version is 8.00 or newer The project FAQ lists it as unsupported. Stop before buying hardware or attempting the loader. There is no documented downgrade path.
Your version is between two listed entries The project warns that intermediate versions need not work. Do not infer support from the surrounding numbers; check the live README and treat an unlisted version as ineligible unless the project explicitly adds it.
The console is eligible but Linux does not start Exploit state, image preparation, storage, or firmware-specific steps may be wrong. Recheck the README for your exact version, verify the image release, reconnect the required keyboard and mouse, and repeat the documented boot process.
Linux boots once but not after restart The soft-mod is temporary by design. Run the exploit again. A full restart does not preserve the Linux boot state.
The system fails with an M.2 installed on 3.xx The project documents this exact limitation. Remove the M.2 and use the supported external-USB arrangement; do not keep testing with the drive attached.
Standby resumes to a blank screen or hangs Standby/resume is unsupported. Power down and perform a fresh boot and exploit sequence.
Keyboard or mouse is missing The project requires both peripherals during setup. Use wired USB devices or supported USB dongles, then restart the loader procedure.
Linux works but a game fails Boot compatibility is not game compatibility. Check the title’s Linux/Proton, graphics, anti-cheat, launcher, and controller requirements separately.
An update changed the behavior Firmware support depends on exact versions and vulnerabilities. Record the new version, stop further updates, and consult the current README rather than applying an old workaround.

Make the go/no-go decision

  • Go: Your exact firmware appears in the project’s supported list; you accept an exploit-based, repeat-after-reboot workflow; you have a 64 GB or larger USB drive, keyboard, and mouse; and you are willing to test games individually.
  • Pause: Your firmware is unlisted, you need standby/resume, or you require guaranteed compatibility with a particular game or peripheral.
  • Do not proceed: Your console is on 8.00 or newer, you are counting on a downgrade, or you plan to attach an M.2 to a 3.xx setup.

Recheck the live loader README immediately before changing the console. The project is dependent on firmware-specific vulnerabilities, so a supported combination today can acquire different instructions or limitations later. Hardware purchases are useful only after that eligibility check; they cannot turn an unsupported PS5 into a supported one.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
